Previous studies of GD 244 revealed seven pulsation frequencies (two doublets and three single periods) in the light variations of the star. The data obtained at McDonald Observatory between 2003 and 2006, and our additional measurements in 2006 and 2007 at Konkoly Observatory, allow the investigation of the long-term pulsational behaviour of GD 244. We found that the 307.1 s period component of one of the doublets show long-term, periodic amplitude modulation with a time scale of ~740 days. Possible explanations are that nonlinear resonant mode coupling is operating among the rotationally split frequency components, or two modes, unresolved in the yearly data are excited at ~307.1 s. This is the first time that such long-term periodic amplitude modulation is published on a ZZ Ceti star.
We summarize our findings on three cool ZZ Ceti type pulsating white dwarfs. We determined eight independent modes in HS 0733+4119, of which seven are new findings. For GD 154, we detected two new eigenmodes, and the recurrence of the pulsational behaviour first observed in 1977. We discuss that GD 154 does not only vary its pulsations between a multiperiodic and a quasi-monoperiodic phase, but there are also differences between the relative amplitudes of the near-subharmonics observed in the latter phase. In the complex pulsator, Ross 808, we compared the pre- and post Whole Earth Telescope c…
The spectroscopic sky survey carried out by the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) provides the largest stellar spectra library in the world until now. A large number of new DA white dwarfs had been identified based on the LAMOST spectra. The effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$) and surface gravity ($\log g$) of most DA white dwarfs were determined and published in the catalogs, e.g. Zhao et al. (2013), Rebassa-Mansergas et al. (2015), Gentile Fusillo et al. (2015) and Guo et al. (2015). We selected ZZ Ceti candidates from the published catalogs by considering …
Context. We present our findings on 18 formerly known ZZ Ceti stars observed by the TESS space telescope in 120s cadence mode during the survey observation of the southern ecliptic hemisphere. Aims. We focus on the frequency analysis of the space-based observations, comparing the results with the findings of the previous ground-based measurements. The frequencies detected by the TESS observations can serve as inputs for future asteroseismic analyses. Methods. We performed standard pre-whitening of the data sets to derive the possible pulsation frequencies of the different targets. In some case…
During our optical monitoring of UV Ceti, iconic late-type flaring star, with high temporal resolution using the Russian 6-m telescope in 2008 we detected a giant flare with the amplitude of about 3 magnitudes in $U$-band. Near flare maximum more than a dozen of spike bursts have been discovered with triangular shapes and durations from 0.6 to 1.2 s and maximal luminosities in the range $(1.5-8)\times10^{27}$ erg~s$^{-1}$. For the half of these events the linear polarization exceeds 35% with significance better than $5σ$. We argue that these events are synchrotron emission of electron streams …
We present an asteroseismological analysis of four ZZ Ceti stars observed with \emph{Kepler}: GD 1212, SDSS J113655.17+040952.6, KIC 11911480 and KIC 4552982, based on a grid of full evolutionary models of DA white dwarf stars. We employ a grid of carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs models, characterized by a detailed and consistent chemical inner profile for the core and the envelope. In addition to the observed periods, we take into account other information from the observational data, as amplitudes, rotational splittings and period spacing, as well as photometry and spectroscopy. For each star…
With typical periods of order 10 minutes, the pulsation signatures of ZZ Ceti variables (pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarf stars) are severely undersampled by long-cadence (29.42 minutes per exposure) K2 observations. Nyquist aliasing renders the intrinsic frequencies ambiguous, stifling precision asteroseismology. We report the discovery of two new ZZ Cetis in long-cadence K2 data: EPIC 210377280 and EPIC 220274129. Guided by 3-4 nights of follow-up, high-speed (<=30 s) photometry from McDonald Observatory, we recover accurate pulsation frequencies for K2 signals that reflected 4-5 ti…
We aimed at collecting all known white dwarf pulsators with hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and list their main photometric and atmospheric parameters together with their pulsation periods and amplitudes observed at different epochs. For this purpose, we explored the pulsating white dwarf related literature with the systematic use of the SIMBAD and the NASA's Astrophysics Data System (ADS) databases. We summarized our results in four tables listing seven ZZ Ceti stars in detached white dwarf plus main-sequence binaries, seven extremely low-mass DA pulsators, three hot DAVs and 180 ZZ Ceti stars…
We present the results of a search for amplitude modulation of pulsation mode frequencies in 983 $δ$ Sct stars, which have effective temperatures between 6400 $\leq T_{\rm eff} \leq$ 10 000 K in the Kepler Input Catalogue and were continuously observed by the Kepler Space Telescope for 4 yr. We demonstrate the diversity in pulsational behaviour observed, in particular nonlinearity, which is predicted for $δ$ Sct stars. We analyse and discuss examples of $δ$ Sct stars with constant amplitudes and phases; those that exhibit amplitude modulation caused by beating of close-frequency pulsation mode…
The number of stars observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) project in the Galactic bulge offers an invaluable chance to study RR Lyrae stars in a statistical manner. We used data of 3141 fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars showing the Blazhko effect observed in OGLE-IV to investigate a possible connection between modulation amplitudes and periods, light curve and pulsation characteristics. We found that there is no simple monotonic correlation between any combination of two parameters concerning the Blazhko and pulsation amplitudes, periods and the shape of the light curve…
We propose for the first time that KIC 12602250 is a low-amplitude radial double-mode $δ$ Scuti star with amplitude modulation. The detailed frequency analysis is given for the light curve of KIC 12602250 which is delivered from the Kepler mission. The Fourier analysis of the long cadence data (i.e. Q0 - Q17, spanning 1471 days) reveals that the variations of the light curve are dominated by the strongest mode with frequency F0 = 11.6141 $\rm{d^{-1}}$, suggesting that KIC 12602250 is a $δ$ Scuti star. The other independent mode F1 = 14.9741 $\rm{d^{-1}}$ is newly detected. The amplitude of the…
Ellipsoidal variables present light-curve modulations caused by stellar distortion, induced by tidal interaction with their companions. An analytical approximated model of the ellipsoidal modulation is given as a discrete Fourier series by Morris and Naftilan 1993 (MN93). Based on numerical simulations using the PHOEBE code we present here updated amplitudes of the first three harmonics of the model. The expected amplitudes are given as a function of the mass ratio and inclination of the binary system and the fillout factor of the primary---the ratio between the stellar radius and that of its …
Recent studies have revealed a hitherto unknown complexity of Cepheid pulsation. We implement local kernel regression to search for both period and amplitude modulations simultaneously in continuous time and to investigate their detectability, and test this new method on 53 classical Cepheids from the OGLE-III catalog. We determine confidence intervals using parametric and non-parametric bootstrap sampling to estimate significance and investigate multi-periodicity using a modified pre-whitening approach that relies on time-dependent light curve parameters. We find a wide variety of period and …
In this paper, we present an analysis of the pulsating behavior of $Kepler$ target KIC 10284901. The Fourier transform of the high-precision light curve reveals seven independent frequencies for its light variations. Among them, the first two frequencies are main pulsation modes: F0 = 18.994054(1) $\rm{day^{-1}}$ and F1 = 24.335804(4) $\rm{day^{-1}}$, the ratio of F0/F1 = 0.7805 classifies this star as a double-mode high-amplitude $δ$ Scuti (HADS) star; another two frequencies, $f_{m1}$ = 0.4407 day$^{-1}$ and $f_{m2}$ = 0.8125 day$^{-1}$, are detected directly, and the modulations of $f_{m1}$…
We perform multiwavelength time-distance analysis of a fan loop system anchored in an isolated sunspot region AR 12553. The active region was observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. We measure the phase speeds of the propagating intensity disturbances by employing cross-correlation analysis, as well as by obtaining the slopes in xt-plots. We obtain original as well as de-trended light curves at different heights of the time-distance maps and characterize them by performing Fouriér and Wavelet analysis, respectively. The time-distance maps reveal cl…
We present a simulation showing that super-Nyquist frequencies may have periodic amplitude and frequency modulations, even if actually stable, in time series sampled like the Kepler data. These modulations are caused by the barycentric time correction, which destroys the evenly spaced time measurements, making the Nyquist frequency variable over the spacecraft orbit around the Sun. These modulations can easily be identified in pulsating stars from Kepler's photometric data.
Condensate clouds fundamentally impact the atmospheric structure and spectra of exoplanets and brown dwarfs but the connections between surface gravity, cloud structure, dust in the upper atmosphere, and the red colors of some brown dwarfs remain poorly understood. Rotational modulations enable the study of different clouds in the same atmosphere, thereby providing a method to isolate the effects of clouds. Here we present the discovery of high peak-to-peak amplitude (8%) rotational modulations in a low-gravity, extremely red (J-Ks=2.55) L6 dwarf WISEP J004701.06+680352.1 (W0047). Using the Hu…
Variability of Classical T Tauri Systems (CTTS) occurs over a vast range of timescales. CTTS in particular are subject to variability caused by accretion shocks which can occur stochastically, periodically, or quasi-periodically on timescales over a few days. The detectability of young planets within these systems is likely hampered by activity; therefore, it is essential that we understand the origin of young star variability over a range of timescales to help disentangle stellar activity from signatures of planetary origin. We present analysis of the stochastic small-amplitude photometric va…
