Nanodot deposition on a side surface of a rectangular sample and digital image correlation are used to quantify the in-plane strain fields associated with the propagation of a shear band in a PdNiP bulk metallic glass, induced by rolling. Within the resolution of the method related to an average inter-dot distance of 100 nm, deformation is found to be highly localized at the shear bands, while alternating areas with a size of 100 - 400 nm with opposite local shear strains are found. This phenomenon substantiates a local stick-slip nature of shear band propagation during the metallic glass deformation, even during rolling.
We study experimentally the fracture dynamics during the peeling at a constant velocity of a roller adhesive tape mounted on a freely rotating pulley. Thanks to a high speed camera, we measure, in an intermediate range of peeling velocities, high frequency oscillations between phases of slow and rapid propagation of the peeling fracture. This so-called stick-slip regime is well known as the consequence of a decreasing fracture energy of the adhesive in a certain range of peeling velocity coupled to the elasticity of the peeled tape. Simultaneously with stick-slip, we observe low frequency osci…
By means of atomistic simulations, we demonstrate that a dislocation core exhibits intermittent quasistatic restructuring during incremental shear within the same Peierls valley. This can be regarded as a stick-slip transition, which is also reproduced for a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova chain under rigid boundary conditions. This occurs due to a discontinuous jump in an order parameter of the system, which signifies the extent of region forbidden for the presence of particles in the chain. The stick-slip phenomenon observed in the dislocation core is also shown to be reflected after dimen…
Powders and grains exhibit unpredictable jamming-to-flow transitions that manifest themselves on geophysical scales in catastrophic slip events such as landslides and earthquakes, and on laboratory/industrial scales in profound processing difficulties. Over the past few years, insight into these transitions has been provided by new evidence that slip events may accompanied, or even preceded, by electrical effects. In the present work, we quantify the correlation between slip and the separation of electrical charges, using an archetypal granular material: photoelastic polymers. We measure a str…
It is now known that the equations of motion for the contact point during peeling of an adhesive tape mounted on a roll introduced earlier are singular and do not support dynamical jumps across the two stable branches of the peel force function. By including the kinetic energy of the tape in the Lagrangian, we derive equations of motion that support stick-slip jumps as a natural consequence of the inherent dynamics. In the low mass limit, these equations reproduce solutions obtained using a differential-algebraic algorithm introduced for the earlier equations. Our analysis also shows that mass…
We have devised an original laboratory experiment where we investigate the frictional behaviour of a single crystal salt slider over a large number of deformation cycles. Because of its physical properties, salt, a surrogate for natural faults, allows for friction and plastic deformation and pressure solution creep to be efficient on the same timescale. During the same experiment, we observe a continuous change of the frictional behaviour of the slider under constant conditions of stiffness, temperature and loading velocity. The stick-slip regime is progressively vanishing, eventually reaching…
Using a high speed camera, we study the peeling dynamics of an adhesive tape under a constant load with a special focus on the so-called stick-slip regime of the peeling. It is the first time that the very fast motion of the peeling point is imaged. The speed of the camera, up to 16000 fps, allows us to observe and quantify the details of the peeling point motion during the stick and slip phases: stick and slip velocities, durations and amplitudes. First, in contrast with previous observations, the stick-slip regime appears to be only transient in the force controlled peeling. Additionally, we…
An adiabatic approach is developed for the problem of boundary friction between two atomically smooth and incommensurate solid surfaces, separated by a monolayer of lubricant atoms. This method permits to consider very slow macroscopic motion of the parts in contact, separately from fast thermic motions of individual atoms. A characteristic ''stick-slip'' behavior of the tangential force on the contact is obtained within a simple 1D model, relevant for the tip and sample system in friction force microscopy (FFM). This behavior reflects the specific mechanism of stress energy accumulation, thro…
Even the most regular stick-slip frictional sliding is always stochastic, with irregularity in both the intervals between slip events and the sizes of the associated stress drops. Applying small-amplitude oscillations to the shear force, we show, experimentally and theoretically, that the stick-slip periods synchronize. We further show that this phase-locking is related to the inhibition of slow rupture modes which forces a transition to fast rupture, providing a possible mechanism for observed remote triggering of earthquakes. Such manipulation of collective modes may be generally relevant to…
Conventional slippery surfaces show isotropic drop mobility in all directions, but many applications require directional drop motion along a particular path only. In previous studies, researchers used topographic substrates, together with different external stimuli, to demonstrate anisotropic drop motion, which is not very efficient and cost-effective. Herein, we report a novel approach to smartly control drop motion on lubricating fluid coated chemically heterogeneous surfaces composed of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes. Upon depositing an aqueous drop on such a surface, the u…
This paper is concerned with the quasi-static rheology of packings of glass spheres of diameter d (d=0.2mm, 0.7mm or 3mm). Stick-slip behaviour is observed on small spheres, i.e d=0.2mm & 0.7mm ; one observes also in this case a weakening of the rheology as the rate of deformation increases, and the larger the rate the larger the weakening; this generates macroscopic instabilities and stick-slip. Statistics of stick-slip events have been determined, which show that the larger the sample the more regular (i.e. "periodic") the sick-slip, the faster the strain rate the less periodic the events. O…
The effect of random surface roughness on hydrodynamics of viscous incompressible liquid is discussed. Roughness-driven contributions to hydrodynamic flows, energy dissipation, and friction force are calculated in a wide range of parameters. When the hydrodynamic decay length (the viscous wave penetration depth) is larger than the size of random surface inhomogeneities, it is possible to replace a random rough surface by effective stick-slip boundary conditions on a flat surface with two constants: the stick-slip length and the renormalization of viscosity near the boundary. The stick-slip len…
Using a high-speed camera, we follow the propagation of the detachment front during the peeling of an adhesive tape from a flat surface. In a given range of peeling velocity, this front displays a multiscale unstable dynamics, entangling two well-separated spatiotemporal scales, which correspond to microscopic and macroscopic dynamical stick-slip instabilities. While the periodic release of the stretch energy of the whole peeled ribbon drives the classical macro-stick-slip, we show that the micro-stick-slip, due to the regular propagation of transverse dynamic fractures discovered by Thoroddse…
Stick-slip, manifest as intermittent tangential motion between two solids, is a well-known friction instability that occurs in a number of natural and engineering systems. In the context of adhesive polymer interfaces, this phenomenon has often been solely associated with Schallamach waves, which are termed slow waves due to their low propagation speeds. We study the dynamics of a model polymer interface using coupled force measurements and high speed \emph{in situ} imaging, to explore the occurrence of stick-slip linked to other slow wave phenomena. Two new waves---slip pulse and separation p…
A decade ago, Budakian and Putterman (Phys. Rev. Lett., {\bf 85}, 1000 (2000)) ascribed friction to the formation of bonds arising from contact charging when a gold tip of a surface force apparatus was dragged on polymethylmethacrylate surface. We propose a stick-slip model that captures the observed correlation between stick-slip events and charge transfer, and the lack of dependence of the scale factor connecting the force jumps and charge transfer on normal load. Here, stick-slip dynamics arises as a competition between the visco-elastic and plastic deformation time scales and that due to t…
We study the effect of atomic scale surface-lubricant interactions on nanoscale boundary-lubricated friction, by considering two example surfaces - hydrophilic mica and hydrophobic graphene - confining thin layers of water in molecular dynamics simulations. We observe stick-slip dynamics for thin water films confined by mica sheets, involving periodic breaking-reforming transitions of atomic scale capillary water bridges formed around the potassium ions of mica. However, only smooth sliding without stick-slip events is observed for water confined by graphene, as well as for thicker water layer…
We discuss the stick-slip motion of an elastic block sliding along a rigid substrate. We argue that for a given external shear stress this system shows a discontinuous nonequilibrium transition from a uniform stick state to uniform sliding at some critical stress which is nothing but the Griffith threshold for crack propagation. An inhomogeneous mode of sliding occurs, when the driving velocity is prescribed instead of the external stress. A transition to homogeneous sliding occurs at a critical velocity, which is related to the critical stress. We solve the elastic problem for a steady-state …
Intermittent motion, called stick--slip, is a friction instability that commonly occurs during relative sliding of two elastic solids. In adhesive polymer contacts, where elasticity and interface adhesion are strongly coupled, stick--slip results from the propagation of slow detachment waves at the interface. Using \emph{in situ} imaging experiments at an adhesive contact, we show the occurrence of two distinct detachment waves moving parallel (Schallamach wave) and anti-parallel (separation wave) to the applied remote sliding. Both waves cause slip in the same direction and travel at speeds m…
A tribological system consisting of two contacting blocks has been considered. One of them is arranged between two springs, the other is driven periodically. The kinetics of the system has been studied in the boundary friction mode, when an ultrathin lubricant film is contained between the atomically smooth surfaces. In order to describe the film state, the expression for the free energy density is used in the form of an expansion in a power series in the order parameter, the latter being reduced to the shear modulus of a lubricant. The stick-slip mode is shown to be realized in a wide range o…
Experimental measurements have reported ultra-fast and radius-dependent water transport in carbon nanotubes which are absent in boron nitride nanotubes. Despite considerable effort, the origin of this contrasting (and fascinating) behaviour is not understood. Here, with the aid of machine learning-based molecular dynamics simulations that deliver first-principles accuracy, we investigate water transport in single-wall carbon and boron nitride nanotubes. Our simulations reveal a large, radius-dependent hydrodynamic slippage on both materials with water experiencing indeed a $\approx 5$ times lo…
We investigate the dynamics of peeling of an adhesive tape subjected to a constant pull speed. We derive the equations of motion for the angular speed of the roller tape, the peel angle and the pull force used in earlier investigations using a Lagrangian. Due to the constraint between the pull force, peel angle and the peel force, it falls into the category of differential-algebraic equations requiring an appropriate algorithm for its numerical solution. Using such a scheme, we show that stick-slip jumps emerge in a purely dynamical manner. Our detailed numerical study shows that these set of …
The current understanding of the earthquake interevent times distribution (ITD) is incomplete. The Weibull distribution is often used to model the earthquake ITD. We link the earthquake ITD on single faults with the Earth's crustal shear strength distribution by means of a phenomenological stick - slip model. We obtain Weibull ITD for power-law stress accumulation, i.e., $σ(t) = αt^β$, where $β>0$ for single faults or systems with homogeneous strength statistics. We show that logarithmic stress accumulation leads to the log-Weibull ITD. For the Weibull ITD, we prove that (i) $m= βm_s$, where $…
Mechanical vibrations are known to affect frictional sliding and the associated stick-slip patterns causing sometimes a drastic reduction of the friction force. This issue is relevant for applications in nanotribology and to understand earthquake triggering by small dynamic perturbations . We study the dynamics of repulsive particles confined between a horizontally driven top plate and a vertically oscillating bottom plate. Our numerical results show a suppression of the high dissipative stick-slip regime in a well defined range of frequencies that depends on the vibrating amplitude, the norma…
We have found that the ability of long thin rods to jam into a solid-like state in response to a local perturbation depends upon both the particle aspect ratio and the container size. The dynamic phase diagram in this parameter space reveals a broad transition region separating granular stick-slip and solid-like behavior. In this transition region the pile displays both solid and stick-slip behavior. We measure the force on a small object pulled through the pile, and find the fluctuation spectra to have power law tails with an exponent characteristic of the region. The exponent varies from $β=…
Compression experiments on micron-scale specimens and acoustic emission (AE) measurements on bulk samples revealed that the dislocation motion resembles a stick-slip process - a series of unpredictable local strain bursts with a scale-free size distribution. Here we present a unique experimental set-up, which detects weak AE waves of dislocation slip during the compression of Zn micropillars. Profound correlation is observed between the energies of deformation events and the emitted AE signals that, as we conclude, are induced by the collective dissipative motion of dislocations. The AE data a…
Recently introduced constitutive equations for the rheology of dense, disordered materials are investigated in the context of stick-slip experiments in boundary lubrication. The model is based on a generalization of the shear transformation zone (STZ) theory, in which plastic deformation is represented by a population of mesoscopic regions which may undergo non affine deformations in response to stress. The generalization we study phenomenologically incorporates the effects of aging and glassy relaxation. Under experimental conditions associated with typical transitions from stick-slip to stea…
Using a path integral approach, we derive an analytical solution of a nonlinear and singular Langevin equation, which has been introduced previously by P.-G. de Gennes as a simple phenomenological model for the stick-slip motion of a solid object on a vibrating horizontal surface. We show that the optimal (or most probable) paths of this model can be divided into two classes of paths, which correspond physically to a sliding or slip motion, where the object moves with a non-zero velocity over the underlying surface, and a stick-slip motion, where the object is stuck to the surface for a finite…
We discuss crack propagation along the interface between two dissimilar materials. The crack edge separates two states of the interface, ``stick'' and ``slip''. In the slip region we assume that the shear stress is proportional to the sliding velocity, i.e. the linear viscous friction law. In this picture the static friction appears as the Griffith threshold for crack propagation. We calculate the crack velocity as a function of the applied shear stress and find that the main dissipation comes from the macroscopic region and is mainly due to the friction at the interface. The relevance of our …
Synchrotron Laue microdiffraction and Digital Image Correlation measurements were coupled to track the elastic strain field (or stress field) and the total strain field near a general grain boundary in a bent bicrystal. A 316L stainless steel bicrystal was deformed in situ into the elasto-plastic regime with a four-point bending setup. The test was then simulated using finite elements with a crystal plasticity model comprising internal variables (dislocation densities on discrete slip systems). The predictions of the model have been compared with both the total strain field and the elastic str…
This paper presents the stability analysis of a system sliding at low velocities ($< 100 μ$m.s$^{-1}$) under a periodically modulated normal load, preserving interfacial contact. Experiments clearly evidence that normal vibrations generally stabilize the system against stick-slip oscillations, at least for a modulation frequency much larger than the stick-slip one. The mechanical model of Bureau {\it et al.} (2000), validated on the steady-state response of the system, is used to map its stability diagram. The model takes explicitly into account the finite shear stiffness of the load-bearing a…
