The second fundamental form of Riemannian geometry is generalised to the case of a manifold with a linear connection and an integrable distribution. This bilinear form is generally not symmetric and its skew part is the torsion. The form itself is closely related to the shape map of the connection. The codimension one case generalises the traditional shape operator of Riemannian geometry.
In this article we prove a reverse Hölder inequality for the fundamental eigenfunction of the Dirichlet problem on domains of a compact Riemannian manifold with lower Ricci curvature bounds. We also prove an isoperimetric inequality for the torsional ridigity of such domains.
In the round 6-sphere, null-torsion holomorphic curves are fundamental examples of minimal surfaces. This class of minimal surfaces is quite rich: By a theorem of Bryant, extended by Rowland, every closed Riemann surface may be conformally embedded in the round 6-sphere as a null-torsion holomorphic curve. In this work, we study the second variation of area for compact null-torsion holomorphic curves $Σ$ of genus $g$ and area $4πd$, focusing on the spectrum of the Jacobi operator. We show that if $g \leq 6$, then the multiplicity of the lowest eigenvalue $λ_1 = -2$ is exactly equal to $4d$. Mo…
We present a condition for towers of fiber bundles which implies that the fundamental group of the total space has a nilpotent subgroup of finite index whose torsion is contained in its center. Moreover, the index of the subgroup can be bounded in terms of the fibers of the tower. Our result is motivated by the conjecture that every almost nonnegatively curved closed m-dimensional manifold M admits a finite cover M' for which the number of leafs is bounded in terms of m such that the torsion of the fundamental group of M' lies in its center.
We discuss the construction of Sp(2)Sp(1)-structures whose fundamental form is closed. In particular, we find 10 new examples of 8-dimensional nilmanifolds that admit an invariant closed 4-form with stabiliser Sp(2)Sp(1). Our constructions entail the notion of SO(4)-structures on 7-manifolds. We present a thorough investigation of the intrinsic torsion of such structures, leading to the construction of explicit Lie group examples with invariant intrinsic torsion.
We reconcile between two classical models of edge-dislocations in solids. The first model, dating from the early 1900s models isolated edge-dislocations as line singularities in locally-Euclidean manifolds. The second model, dating from the 1950s, models continuously-distributed edge-dislocations as smooth manifolds endowed with non-symmetric affine connections (equivalently, endowed with torsion fields). In both models, the solid is modeled as a Weitzenböck manifold. We prove, using a weak notion of convergence [KM15], that the second model can be obtained rigorously as a homogenization limit…
We consider the relative canonical line bundle $K_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{T}}$ and a relatively ample line bundle $(L, e^{-ϕ})$ over the total space $ \mathcal{X}\to \mathcal{T}$ of fibration over the Teichmüller space by Riemann surfaces. We consider the case when the induced metric $\sqrt{-1}\partial\bar{\partial}ϕ|_{\mathcal{X}_y}$ on $\mathcal{X}_y$ has constant scalar curvature and we obtain the curvature asymptotics of $L^2$-metric and Quillen metric of the direct image bundle $E^k=π_*(L^k+K_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{T}})$. As a consequence we prove that the second variation of analytic torsio…
Fried's conjecture is concerned with the behavior of dynamical zeta functions at the origin. For compact hyperbolic manifolds, Fried proved that for an orthogonal acyclic representation of the fundamental group, the twisted Ruelle zeta function is holomorphic at $s=0$ and its value at $s=0$ equals the Ray-Singer analytic torsion. He also established a more general result for orthogonal representations, which are not acyclic. The purpose of the present paper is to extend Fried's result to arbitrary finite dimensional representations of the fundamental group. The Ray-Singer analytic torsion is r…
We present a systematic effective method to construct coarse fundamental domains for the action of the Picard modular groups $PU(2,1,\mathcal{O}_d)$ where $\mathcal{O}_d$ has class number one, i.e. $d=1,2,3,7,11,19,43,67,163$. The computations can be performed quickly up to the value $d=19$. As an application of this method, we classify conjugacy classes of torsion elements, deduce short presentations for the groups, and construct neat subgroups of small index.
The purpose of this paper is first to give an asymptotic formula for the holomorphic analytic torsion forms of a fibration associated with increasing powers of a given line bundle. Secondly, we generalize this formula, thanks to the theory of Toeplitz operators, in the case where the powers of the line bundle is replaced by the direct image of powers of a line bundle on a bigger manifold. In both cases we have to make fiberwise positivity assumption on the line bundle. This results are the family versions of the results of Bimsut and Vasserot on the asymptotic of the holomorphic torsion.
