The fusion techniques that utilize multiple feature sets to form new features that are often more robust and contain useful information for future processing are referred to as feature fusion. The term data fusion is applied to the class of techniques used for combining decisions obtained from multiple feature sets to form global decisions. Feature and data fusion interchangeably represent two important classes of techniques that have proved to be of practical importance in a wide range of medical imaging problems

Medical images play an important role in clinical applications. Multimodal medical images could provide rich information about patients for physicians to diagnose. The image fusion technique is able to synthesize complementary information from multimodal images into a single image. This technique will prevent radiologists switch back and forth between different images and save lots of time in the diagnostic process. In this paper, we introduce a novel Dilated Residual Attention Network for the medical image fusion task. Our network is capable to extract multi-scale deep semantic features. Furt…

Multimodal medical image fusion helps to increase efficiency in medical diagnosis. This paper presents multimodal medical image fusion by selecting relevant features using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Particle Swarm Optimization techniques (PSO). DTCWT is used for decomposition of the images into low and high frequency coefficients. Fusion rules such as combination of minimum, maximum and simple averaging are applied to approximate and detailed coefficients. The fused image is reconstructed by inverse DTCWT. Performance metrics are evaluated and it shows that DTCWT-PCA performs bette…

The medical image fusion combines two or more modalities into a single view while medical image translation synthesizes new images and assists in data augmentation. Together, these methods help in faster diagnosis of high grade malignant gliomas. However, they might be untrustworthy due to which neurosurgeons demand a robust visualisation tool to verify the reliability of the fusion and translation results before they make pre-operative surgical decisions. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to compute a confidence heat map between the source-target image pair by estimating the informat…

Doctors often make diagonostic decisions based on patient's image scans, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and patient's electronic health records (EHR) such as age, gender, blood pressure and so on. Despite a lot of automatic methods have been proposed for either image or text analysis in computer vision or natural language research areas, much fewer studies have been developed for the fusion of medical image and EHR data for medical problems. Among existing early or intermediate fusion methods, concatenation of features from both modalities is still a mainstream. For a better exploit…

Transformer, the latest technological advance of deep learning, has gained prevalence in natural language processing or computer vision. Since medical imaging bear some resemblance to computer vision, it is natural to inquire about the status quo of Transformers in medical imaging and ask the question: can the Transformer models transform medical imaging? In this paper, we attempt to make a response to the inquiry. After a brief introduction of the fundamentals of Transformers, especially in comparison with convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and highlighting key defining properties that cha…

Despite recent progress on semantic segmentation, there still exist huge challenges in medical ultra-resolution image segmentation. The methods based on multi-branch structure can make a good balance between computational burdens and segmentation accuracy. However, the fusion structure in these methods require to be designed elaborately to achieve desirable result, which leads to model redundancy. In this paper, we propose Meta Segmentation Network (MSN) to solve this challenging problem. With the help of meta-learning, the fusion module of MSN is quite simple but effective. MSN can fast gener…

Combining information from multi-view images is crucial to improve the performance and robustness of automated methods for disease diagnosis. However, due to the non-alignment characteristics of multi-view images, building correlation and data fusion across views largely remain an open problem. In this study, we present TransFusion, a Transformer-based architecture to merge divergent multi-view imaging information using convolutional layers and powerful attention mechanisms. In particular, the Divergent Fusion Attention (DiFA) module is proposed for rich cross-view context modeling and semanti…

Medical image classification has developed rapidly under the impetus of the convolutional neural network (CNN). Due to the fixed size of the receptive field of the convolution kernel, it is difficult to capture the global features of medical images. Although the self-attention-based Transformer can model long-range dependencies, it has high computational complexity and lacks local inductive bias. Much research has demonstrated that global and local features are crucial for image classification. However, medical images have a lot of noisy, scattered features, intra-class variation, and inter-cl…

The similarities between computer vision and medical imaging, reviewed the question among researchers if the impact of transformers on computer vision be translated to medical imaging? In this paper, we attempt to provide a comprehensive and recent review on the application of transformers in medical imaging by; describing the transformer model comparing it with a diversity of convolutional…
In this work we examine the performance enhancement in classification of medical imaging data when image features are combined with associated non-image data. We compare the performance of eight state-of-the-art deep neural networks in classification tasks when using only image features, compared to when these are combined with patient metadata. We utilise transfer learning with networks pretrained on ImageNet used directly as feature extractors and fine tuned on the target domain. Our experiments show that performance can be significantly enhanced with the inclusion of metadata and use interp…

Generating radiology reports is time-consuming and requires extensive expertise in practice. Therefore, reliable automatic radiology report generation is highly desired to alleviate the workload. Although deep learning techniques have been successfully applied to image classification and image captioning tasks, radiology report generation remains challenging in regards to understanding and linking complicated medical visual contents with accurate natural language descriptions. In addition, the data scales of open-access datasets that contain paired medical images and reports remain very limite…
Deep learning models, such as the fully convolutional network (FCN), have been widely used in 3D biomedical segmentation and achieved state-of-the-art performance. Multiple modalities are often used for disease diagnosis and quantification. Two approaches are widely used in the literature to fuse multiple modalities in the segmentation networks: early-fusion (which stacks multiple modalities as different input channels) and late-fusion (which fuses the segmentation results from different modalities at the very end). These fusion methods easily suffer from the cross-modal interference caused by…

Gigapixel medical images provide massive data, both morphological textures and spatial information, to be mined. Due to the large data scale in histology, deep learning methods play an increasingly significant role as feature extractors. Existing solutions heavily rely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for global pixel-level analysis, leaving the underlying local geometric structure such as the interaction between cells in the tumor microenvironment unexplored. The topological structure in medical images, as proven to be closely related to tumor evolution, can be well characterized by gr…

Image analysis using more than one modality (i.e. multi-modal) has been increasingly applied in the field of biomedical imaging. One of the challenges in performing the multimodal analysis is that there exist multiple schemes for fusing the information from different modalities, where such schemes are application-dependent and lack a unified framework to guide their designs. In this work we firstly propose a conceptual architecture for the image fusion schemes in supervised biomedical image analysis: fusing at the feature level, fusing at the classifier level, and fusing at the decision-making…
