We study the arc complex of a surface with marked points in the interior and on the boundary. We prove that the isomorphism type of the arc complex determines the topology of the underlying surface, and that in all but a few cases every automorphism is induced by a homeomorphism of the surface. As an application we deduce some rigidity results for the Fomin-Shapiro-Thurston cluster algebra associated to such a surface. Our proofs do not employ any known simplicial rigidity result.
In all possible cases, we prove that local embeddings between two curve complexes whose complexities do not increase from domain to codomain are induced by surface homeomorphism. This is our first main result. From this we can deduce our second, a strong local co-Hopfian result for mapping class groups.
We obtain rigidity and gluing results for the Morse complex of a real-valued Morse function as well as for the Novikov complex of a circle-valued Morse function. A rigidity result is also proved for the Floer complex of a hamiltonian defined on a closed symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ with $c_{1}|_{π_{2}(M)}=[ω]|_{π_{2}(M)}=0$. The rigidity results for these complexes show that the complex of a fixed generic function/hamiltonian is a retract of the Morse (respectively Novikov or Floer) complex of any other sufficiently $C^{0}$ close generic function/hamiltonian. The gluing result is a type of Maye…
We introduce and study the notion of relative rigidity for pairs $(X,\JJ)$ where 1) $X$ is a hyperbolic metric space and $\JJ$ a collection of quasiconvex sets 2) $X$ is a relatively hyperbolic group and $\JJ$ the collection of parabolics 3) $X$ is a higher rank symmetric space and $\JJ$ an equivariant collection of maximal flats Relative rigidity can roughly be described as upgrading a uniformly proper map between two such $\JJ$'s to a quasi-isometry between the corresponding $X$'s. A related notion is that of a $C$-complex which is the adaptation of a Tits complex to this context. We prove t…
We show that group actions on irreducible ${\rm CAT(0)}$ cube complexes with no free faces are uniquely determined by their $\ell^1$ length function. Actions are allowed to be non-proper and non-cocompact, as long as they are minimal and have no finite orbit in the visual boundary. This is, to our knowledge, the first length-spectrum rigidity result in a setting of non-positive curvature (with the exception of some particular cases in dimension 2 and symmetric spaces). As our main tool, we develop a notion of cross ratio on Roller boundaries of ${\rm CAT(0)}$ cube complexes. Inspired by result…
Let S be any orientable surface of infinite genus with a finite number of boundary components. In this work we consider the curve complex C(S), the nonseparating curve complex N(S) and the Schmutz graph G(S) of S. When all the topological ends of S carry genus, we show that all elements in the automorphism groups Aut(C(S)), Aut(N(S)) and Aut(G(S)) are geometric, i.e. these groups are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group MCG*(S) of the infinite surface S. Finally, we study rigidity phenomena within Aut(C(S)) and Aut(N(S))
We study the large scale geometry of mapping class groups MCG(S), using hyperbolicity properties of curve complexes. We show that any self quasi-isometry of MCG(S) (outside a few sporadic cases) is a bounded distance away from a left-multiplication, and as a consequence obtain quasi-isometric rigidity for MCG(S), namely that groups quasi-isometric to MCG(S) are virtually equal to it. (The latter theorem was proved by Hamenstadt using different methods). As part of our approach we obtain several other structural results: a description of the tree-graded structure on the asymptotic cone of MCG(S…
We show that if a Heegaard splitting is obtained by gluing a splitting of Hempel distance at least 4 and the genus-1 splitting of $S^2 \times S^1$, then the Goeritz group of the splitting is finitely generated. To show this, we first provide a sufficient condition for a full subcomplex of the arc complex for a compact orientable surface to be contractible, which generalizes the result by Hatcher that the arc complexes are contractible. We then construct infinitely many Heegaard splittings, including the above-mentioned Heegaard splitting, for which suitably defined complexes of Haken spheres a…
Given a CAT(0) cube complex X, we show that if Aut(X) $\neq$ Isom(X) then there exists a full subcomplex of X which decomposes as a product with $\mathbb{R}^n$. As applications, we prove that if X is $δ$-hyperbolic, cocompact and 1-ended, then Aut(X) $=$ Isom(X) unless X is quasi-isometric to $\mathbb{H}^2$, and extend the rank-rigidity result of Caprace-Sageev to any lattice $ Γ\leq$ Isom(X).
For any compact, connected, orientable, finite-type surface with marked points other than the sphere with three marked points, we construct a finite rigid set of its arc complex: a finite simplicial subcomplex of its arc complex such that any locally injective map of this set into the arc complex of another surface with arc complex of the same or lower dimension is induced by a homeomorphism of the surfaces, unique up to isotopy in most cases. It follows that if the arc complexes of two surfaces are isomorphic, the surfaces are homeomorphic. We also give an exhaustion of the arc complex by fin…
Gordian complex of knots was defined by Hirasawa and Uchida as the simplicial complex whose vertices are knot isotopy classes in $\mathbb{S}^3$. Later Horiuchi and Ohyama defined Gordian complex of virtual knots using $v$-move and forbidden moves. In this paper we discuss Gordian complex of knots by region crossing change and Gordian complex of virtual knots by arc shift move. Arc shift move is a local move in the virtual knot diagram which results in reversing orientation locally between two consecutive crossings. We show the existence of an arbitrarily high dimensional simplex in both the Go…
For a half-translation surface (S,q), the associated saddle connection complex A(S,q) is the simplicial complex where vertices are the saddle connections on (S,q), with simplices spanned by sets of pairwise disjoint saddle connections. This complex can be naturally regarded as an induced subcomplex of the arc complex. We prove that any simplicial isomorphism $ϕ: A(S,q) \to A(S',q')$ between saddle connection complexes is induced by an affine diffeomorphism $F : (S,q) \to (S',q')$. In particular, this shows that the saddle connection complex is a complete invariant of affine equivalence classes…
A classical combinatorial fact is that the simplicial complex consisting of disjointly embedded chords in a convex planar polygon is a sphere. For any surface F with non-empty boundary, there is an analogous complex Arc(F) consisting of suitable equivalence classes of arcs in F connecting its boundary components. The main result of this paper is the determination of those arc complexes Arc(F) that are also spherical. This classification has consequences for Riemann's moduli space via its known identification with an analogous arc complex in the punctured case with no boundary. Namely, the esse…
Addressing a question of Zaremsky, we give conditions on a finite simplicial graph which guarantee that the associated matching arc complex is connected and hyperbolic.
It is well-known that $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbf{Q}_{p})$ acts without fixed points on an $(n-1)$-dimensional $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ space (the affine building). We prove that $n-1$ is the smallest dimension of $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ spaces on which matrix groups act without fixed points. Explicitly, let $R$ be an associative ring with identity and $E_{n}^{\prime }(R)$ the extended elementary subgroup. Any isometric action of $E_{n}^{\prime }(R)$ on a complete $\mathrm{CAT(0)}$ space $X^{d}$ of dimension $d<n-1$ has a fixed point. Similar results are discussed for automorphism groups of free groups. Furth…
Let $X$ be a nonelementary CAT(0) cubical complex. We prove that if $X$ is essential and irreducible, then the contact graph of $X$ (introduced in \cite{Hagen}) is unbounded and its boundary is homeomorphic to the regular boundary of $X$ (defined in \cite{Fernos}, \cite{KarSageev}). Using this, we reformulate the Caprace-Sageev's Rank-Rigidity Theorem in terms of the action on the contact graph. Let $G$ be a group with a nonelementary action on $X$, and $(Z_n)$ a random walk corresponding to a generating probability measure on $G$ with finite second moment. Using this identification of the bou…
We prove that almost all arc complexes do not admit a CAT(0) metric with finitely many shapes, in particular any finite-index subgroup of the mapping class group does not preserve such a metric on the arc complex. We also show the analogous statement for all but finitely many disc complexes of handlebodies and free splitting complexes of free groups. The obstruction is combinatorial. These complexes are all hyperbolic and contractible but despite this we show that they satisfy no combinatorial isoperimetric inequality: for any n there is a loop of length 4 that only bounds discs consisting of …
We study the connections between subsurface projections in curve and arc complexes in fibered 3-manifolds and Agol's veering triangulation. The main theme is that large-distance subsurfaces in fibers are associated to large simplicial regions in the veering triangulation, and this correspondence holds uniformly for all fibers in a given fibered face of the Thurston norm.
We study Hurwitz spaces with regard to homological stabilization. By a Hurwitz space, we mean a moduli space of branched, not necessarily connected coverings of a disk with fixed structure group and number of branch points. We choose a sequence of subspaces of Hurwitz spaces which is suitable for our investigations. In the first part, we introduce and study plant complexes, a large new class of simplicial complexes, generalizing the arc complex on a surface with marked points. In the second part, we generalize a result by Ellenberg-Venkatesh-Westerland by showing that homological stabilization…
A branched covering map of surfaces induces a map in the opposite direction between their arc complexes. We represent a branched covering map combinatorially using what we call a lifting picture, and use this representation to computably solve the membership problem of the set of weighted arc diagrams on a given surface which can be obtained by lifting a weighted arc diagram on a bigon. We provide a brute force solution in the general case, and an efficient solution when the input arc diagram is a triangulation.
Shellability of a simplicial complex has many useful structural implications. In particular, it was shown by Danaraj and Klee that every shellable pseudo-manifold is a PL-sphere. The purpose of this paper is to prove the shellability of the quasi-arc complex of the Möbius strip. Along the way we provide elementary proofs of the shellability of the arc complex of the $n$-gon and the cylinder. In turn, applying the result of Danaraj and Klee, we obtain the sphericity of all of these complexes.
