Quantum parameter estimation, the ability to precisely obtain a classical value in a quantum system, is very important to many key quantum technologies. Many of these technologies rely on an optical probe, either coherent or squeezed states to make a precise measurement of a parameter ultimately limited by quantum mechanics. We use this technique to theoretically model, simulate and validate by experiment the measurement and precise estimation of the position of a cavity mirror. In non-resonant systems, the achieved estimation enhancement from quantum smoothing over optimal filtering has not exceeded a factor two, even when squeezed state probes were used. Using a coherent state probe, we show that using quantum smoothing on a mechanically resonant structure driven by a resonant forcing function can result significantly greater improvement in parameter estimation than with non-resonant systems. In this work, we show that it is possible to achieve a smoothing improvement by a factor in excess of three times over optimal filtering. By using intra-cavity light as the probe we obtain finer precision than has been achieved with the equivalent quantum resources in free-space.
Strong light interaction with a subwavelength object has been a long pursuing goal with difficulties mainly arising from the diffraction limit. We propose a high finesse cavity with one mirror made of a subwavelength resonant particle as a platform to enhance this interaction. High-quality eigenmode solutions are obtained for such a highly non-paraxial cavity with a very high field concentration at the particle. The eigenmode solutions interact with the small particle in a more general way than by the electric dipole approximation. With the help of the anapole excitation in the dipole term, th…
We investigate the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana interferometry of a superconducting qubit in a semi-infinite transmission line terminated by a mirror. The transmon-type qubit is at the node of the resonant electromagnetic (EM) field, hiding from the EM field. "Mirror, mirror" briefly describes this system, because the qubit acts as another mirror. We modulate the resonant frequency of the qubit by applying a sinusoidal flux pump. We probe the spectroscopy by measuring the reflection coefficient of a weak probe in the system. Remarkable interference patterns emerge in the spectrum, which c…
We show that an atom can be coupled to a mechanical oscillator via quantum vacuum fluctuations of a cavity field enabling energy transfer processes between them. In a hybrid quantum system consisting of a cavity resonator with a movable mirror and an atom, these processes are dominated by two pair-creation mechanisms: the counterrotating (atom-cavity system) and dynamical Casimir interaction terms (optomechanical system). Because of these two pair-creation mechanisms, the resonant atom-mirror coupling is the result of high-order virtual processes with different transition paths well described …
We theoretically investigate resonant dipole-dipole interaction (RDDI) between artificial atoms in a 1D geometry, implemented by N transmon qubits coupled through a transmission line. Similarly to the atomic cases, RDDI comes from exchange of virtual photons of the unexcited modes, and causes the so-called collective Lamb shift (CLS). To probe the shift, we effectively set one end of the transmission line as a mirror, and examine the reflection spectrum of the probe field from the other end. Our calculation shows that when a qubit is placed at the node of the standing wave formed by the incide…
We investigate the estimation technique called quantum state smoothing introduced by Guevara and Wiseman [Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~{\bf 115}, 180407 (2015)], which offers a valid quantum state estimate for a partially monitored system, conditioned on the observed record both prior and posterior to an estimation time. Partial monitoring by an observer implies that there may exist records unobserved by that observer. It was shown that, given only the observed record, the observer can better estimate the underlying true quantum states, by inferring the unobserved record and using quantum state smoothing,…
Present gravitational wave detectors are based on the measurement of linear displacement in stable optical cavities. Here, we instead suggest the measurement of the twist of a chiral mechanical element induced by a gravitational wave. The induced twist rotates a flat optical mirror on top of this chiral element, leading to the deflection of an incident laser beam. This angle change is enhanced by multiple bounces of light between the rotating mirror and an originally parallel nearby fixed flat mirror. Based on detailed continuum-mechanics calculations, we present a feasible design for the chir…
Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) of a classical mechanical force detection results from quantum back action impinged by the meter on a probe mechanical transducer perturbed by the force of interest. In this paper we introduce a technique of continuous \vy{broadband} back action avoiding measurements for the case of a resonant signal force acting on a linear mechanical oscillator supporting one of mirrors of an optical Michelson-Sagnac Interferometer (MSI). The interferometer with the movable mirror is an opto-mechanical transducer able to support polychromatic probe field. The method involves a di…
Mirror-Field Entanglement in a Microscopic model for Quantum Optomechanics
我们使用Galley,Behunin和Hu [Phys. Rev.
Excitons in a semiconductor monolayer form a collective resonance that can reflect resonant light with extraordinarily high efficiency. Here, we investigate the nonlinear optical properties of such atomistically thin mirrors and show that finite-range interactions between excitons can lead to the generation of highly non-classical light. We describe two scenarios, in which optical nonlinearities arise either from direct photon coupling to excitons in excited Rydberg states or from resonant two-photon excitation of Rydberg excitons with finite-range interactions. The latter case yields conditio…
We investigate the quantum-optical properties of the light emitted by a nanoparticle-on-mirror cavity filled with a single quantum emitter. Inspired by recent experiments, we model a dark-field set-up and explore the photon statistics of the scattered light under grazing laser illumination. Exploiting analytical solutions to Maxwell's equations, we quantize the nanophotonic cavity fields and describe the formation of plasmon exciton polaritons (or plexcitons) in the system. This way, we reveal that the rich plasmonic spectrum of the nanocavity offers unexplored mechanisms for nonclassical ligh…
In this article, we address the optomechanical effects in surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) from a single molecule in a nano-particle on mirror (NPoM) nanocavity by developing a quantum master equation theory, which combines macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and electron-vibration interaction within the framework of open quantum system theory. We supplement the theory with electromagnetic simulations and time-dependent density functional theory calculations in order to study the SERRS of a methylene blue molecule in a realistic NPoM nanocavity. The simulations allow us not o…
