We report results of the CO(J=3-2) and HCO+(J=4-3) observations of the W40 HII region with the ASTE 10 m telescope (HPBW~22 arcsec) to search for molecular outflows and dense clumps. We found that the velocity field in the region is highly complex, consisting of at least four distinct velocity components at V LSR ~ 3, 5, 7, and 10 km/s. The ~7 km/s component represents the systemic velocity of cold gas surroundingthe entire region, and causes heavy absorption in the CO spectra over the velocity range 6 <V LSR< 9 km/s. The ~5 and ~10 km/s components exhibit high CO temperature (>40 K) and are found mostly around the HII region, suggesting that these components are likely to be tracing dense gas interacting with the expanding shell around the HII region. Based on the CO data, we identified 13 regions of high velocity gas which we interpret as candidate outflow lobes. Using the HCO+ data, we also identified six clumps and estimated their physical parameters. On the basis of the ASTE data and near-infrared images from 2MASS, we present an updated three-dimensional model of this region. In order to investigate molecular outflows in W40, the SiO (J=1-0, v=0) emission line and some other emission lines at 40 GHz were also observed with the 45 m telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory, but they were not detected at the present sensitivity.
High velocity clumps joined to the outflow source by emission with a "Hubble law" ramp of linearly increasing radial velocity vs. distance are observed in some planetary nebulae and in some outflows in star formation regions. We propose a simple model in which a "clump" is ejected from a source over a period $τ_0$, with a strong axis to edge velocity stratification. This non-top hat cross section results in the production of a highly curved working surface (initially being pushed by the ejected material, and later coasting along due to its inertia). From both analytic models and numerical simu…
Observations of Protostellar Outflow Feedback in Clustered Star Formation
(abridged) In the inner regions of AGB outflows, several molecules have been detected with abundances much higher than those predicted from thermodynamic equilibrium (TE) chemical models. The presence of the majority of these species can be explained by shock-induced non-TE chemical models, where shocks caused by the pulsating star take the chemistry out of TE in the inner region. Moreover, a non-uniform density structure has been detected in several AGB outflows. A detailed parameter study on the quantitative effects of a non-homogeneous outflow has so far not been performed. We implement a p…
Molecular Outflows From the Protocluster, Serpens South
We present a spatio-kinematical analysis of the CO~($J$=2$\rightarrow$1) line emission, observed with the Atacama Large Millimter/submillimter Array (ALMA), of the outflow associated with the most massive core, ALMA1, in the 70 $μ$m dark clump G010.991$-$00.082. The position-velocity (P-V) diagram of the molecular outflow exhibits a peculiar $\mathsf{S}$-shaped morphology that has not been seen in any other star forming region. We propose a spatio-kinematical model for the bipolar molecular outflow that consists of a decelerating high-velocity component surrounded by a slower component whose v…
A total of 188 high-mass outflows have been identified from a sample of 694 clumps from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz survey, representing a detection rate of approximately 27%. The detection rate of outflows increases from the protostellar stage to the H II stage, but decreases again at the photodissociation (PDR) stage suggesting that outflows are being switched off during the PDR stage. An intimate relationship is found between outflow action and the presence of masers, and water masers appear together with 6.7 GHz methanol masers. Comparing the infall detection rate of clumps…
To study the early phases of massive star formation, we present ALMA observations of SiO(5-4) emission and VLA observations of 6 cm continuum emission towards 32 Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) clumps, spatially resolved down to $\lesssim 0.05$ pc. Out of the 32 clumps, we detect SiO emission in 20 clumps, and in 11 of them the SiO emission is relatively strong and likely tracing protostellar outflows. Some SiO outflows are collimated, while others are less ordered. For the six strongest SiO outflows, we estimate basic outflow properties. In our entire sample, where there is SiO emission, we find 1…
We present interferometric observations of the CN(1-0) line emission in Mrk231 and combine them with previous observations of CO and other H$_2$ gas tracers to study the physical properties of the massive molecular outflow. We find a strong boost of the CN/CO(1-0) line luminosity ratio in the outflow, which is unprecedented compared to any other known Galactic or extragalactic source. For the dense gas phase in the outflow traced by the HCN and CN emissions, we infer $\rm X_{\rm CN}\equiv [CN]/[H_2] > X_{\rm HCN}$ by at least a factor of three, with H$_2$ gas densities of $n_{\rm H_2}\sim10^{5…
We report results of observations of the GGD12-15 region, where cluster formation is actively taking place, using various molecular emission lines. The C18O (J= 1-0) emission line reveals a massive clump in the region with a mass of ~2800 Mo distributed over ~2 pc. The distribution of the C18O(J= 3-2) emission is similar to that of a star cluster forming therein, with an elliptical shape of ~1 pc in size. A bipolar molecular outflow driven by IRS 9Mc, a constituent star of the cluster, is blowing in a direction perpendicular to the elongated C18O (J= 3-2) distribution, covering the entire clum…
We study the dust evolution in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. We follow the processing of dust grains that formed in the Type II-b supernova by modelling the sputtering of grains. The dust is located in dense ejecta clumps crossed by the reverse shock. Further sputtering in the inter-clump medium once the clumps are disrupted by the reverse shock is investigated. The dust evolution in the dense ejecta clumps of Type II-P supernovae and their remnants is also studied. We study oxygen-rich clumps that describe the ejecta oxygen core, and carbon-rich clumps that correspond to the outermost c…
A Mapping Survey of Dense Clumps Associated with Embedded Clusters : Evolutionary Stages of Cluster-Forming Clumps
We present the results of mapping observations toward an outflow-shocked region, OMC-2 FIR 4 using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. We observed the area in $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$), C$^{18}$O ($J=1-0$), N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), CCS ($J_N=8_7-7_6$), HCO$^+$ ($J=1-0$), H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ($J=1-0$), HN$^{13}$C ($J=1-0$), H$^{13}$CN ($J=1-0$), DNC ($J=1-0$), N$_2$D$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and DC$_3$N ($J=9-8$). We detected a dense molecular clump that contains FIR 4/5. We also detected in $^{13}$CO blueshifted and redshifted components driven presumably by protostellar outflows in this region. The axes of the FIR 3 and VL…
We compare the directions of molecular outflows of 62 low-mass Class 0 and I protostars in nearby (<450 pc) star-forming regions with the mean orientations of the magnetic fields on 0.05-0.5 pc scales in the dense cores/clumps where they are embedded. The magnetic field orientations were measured using the JCMT POL-2 data taken by the BISTRO-1 survey and from the archive. The outflow directions were observed with interferometers in the literature. The observed distribution of the angles between the outflows and the magnetic fields peaks between 15 and 35 degrees. After considering projection e…
The ALMA Survey of 70 $μ$m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages (ASHES). XII. Unanchored Forked Stream in the Propagating Path of a Protostellar Outflow
Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) are contemplated to be the ideal targets to probe the early phases of star formation. We have conducted a survey of 72 young dense cores inside PGCCs in the Orion complex with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.3\,mm (band 6) using three different configurations (resolutions $\sim$ 0$\farcs$35, 1$\farcs$0, and 7$\farcs$0) to statistically investigate their evolutionary stages and sub-structures. We have obtained images of the 1.3\,mm continuum and molecular line emission ($^{12}$CO, and SiO) at an angular resolution of $\sim$ 0$\far…
Massive stars, multiple stellar systems and clusters are born from the gravitational collapse of massive dense gaseous clumps, and the way these systems form strongly depends on how the parent clump fragments into cores during collapse. Numerical simulations show that magnetic fields may be the key ingredient in regulating fragmentation. Here we present ALMA observations at ~0.25'' resolution of the thermal dust continuum emission at ~278 GHz towards a turbulent, dense, and massive clump, IRAS 16061-5048c1, in a very early evolutionary stage. The ALMA image shows that the clump has fragmented …
The SuperMALT survey is observing 76 MALT90 clumps at different evolutionary stages (from pre-stellar or quiescent to HII) in high excitation molecular lines and key isotopomers using the Apex 12m telescope with an angular resolution of $\sim$20" and a velocity resolution of $\sim$0.1 km/s. The aim of this survey is to determine the physical, chemical, and kinematical properties of the gas within clumps as they evolve. Here we report some preliminary results based on observations of the $J$=3-2 \& 4-3 lines of HNC, HCN, HCO$^+$, N$_2$H$^+$ and of the $J$=3-2 line of the isotopologue H$^{13}$CO…
We present a multi-wavelength study of two HH objects (137 and 138) that may be associated. We use Gemini H$_2$ (2.12 $μ$m) and K (2.2 $μ$m) images, as well as APEX molecular line observations and Spitzer image archives. Several H$_2$ knots, linked to the optical chain of knots of HH 137, are identified in the Gemini and Spitzer 4.5 $μ$m images. New shock excited regions related to the optical knots delineating HH 138 are also reported. In addition, a bright 4.5 $μ$m 0.09 pc-long arc-shaped structure, roughly located mid-way between HH 137 and HH 138, is found to be associated with two Spitzer…
Dynamical studies of dense structures within molecular clouds often conclude that the most massive clumps contain too little kinetic energy for virial equilibrium, unless they are magnetized to an unexpected degree. This raises questions about how such a state might arise, and how it might persist long enough to represent the population of massive clumps. In an effort to re-examine the origins of this conclusion, we use ammonia line data from the Green Bank Ammonia Survey and Planck-calibrated dust emission data from Herschel to estimate the masses and kinetic and gravitational energies for de…
The article deals with observations of star-forming regions S231-S235 in 'quasi-thermal' lines of ammonia (NH$_3$), cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) and maser lines of methanol (CH$_3$OH) and water vapor (H$_2$O). S231-S235 regions is situated in the giant molecular cloud G174+2.5. We selected all massive molecular clumps in G174+2.5 using archive CO data. For the each clump we determined mass, size and CO column density. After that we performed observations of these clumps. We report about first detections of NH$_3$ and HC$_3$N lines toward the molecular clumps WB89 673 and WB89 668. This means that …
Stellar feedback from high-mass stars (e.g., H{\sc ii} regions) can strongly influence the surrounding interstellar medium and regulate star formation. Our new ALMA observations reveal sequential high-mass star formation taking place within one sub-virial filamentary clump (the G9.62 clump) in the G9.62+0.19 complex. The 12 dense cores (MM 1-12) detected by ALMA are at very different evolutionary stages, from starless core phase to UC H{\sc ii} region phase. Three dense cores (MM6, MM7/G, MM8/F) are associated with outflows. The mass-velocity diagrams of outflows associated with MM7/G and MM8/…
A grid of 20 millions 3-1100$μ$m SED models is presented for synthetic young clusters embedded in dense clumps. The models depend on four primary parameters: the clump mass M$_{clump}$ and dust temperature T$_{dust}$, the fraction of mass f$_{core}$ locked in dense cores, and the age of the clump t$_{SF}$. We populate the YSO clusters using the IMF from Kroupa(2001) and the YSOs SED models grid of Robitaille et al. (2006). We conduct extensive testing of SED fitting using a simulated dataset and we find that M$_{clump}$ essentially depends on the submillimeter portion of the SED, while T$_{dus…
The earliest stages of low-mass star-formation are unclear, but it has been proposed that Chamaeleon-MMS1 is a candidate First Hydrostatic Core (FHSC), the transition stage between a prestellar and protostellar core. This work describes the local (~4000 AU) outflow activity associated with Chamaeleon-MMS1 and its effect on the surrounding material in order to determine the evolutionary state of this young low-mass source. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) to observe Chamaeleon MMS1 at 220 GHz at high spatial (~75 AU) and spectral resolutions (0.1-0.3 km/s). A low…
The star-forming efficiency of dense gas is thought to be set within cores by outflow and radiative feedback. We use magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the relation between protostellar outflow evolution, turbulence and star formation efficiency. We model the collapse and evolution of isolated dense cores for $\gtrsim$ 0.5 Myr including the effects of turbulence, radiation transfer, and both radiation and outflow feedback from forming protostars. We show that outflows drive and maintain turbulence in the core environment even with strong initial fields. The star-formation efficien…
We report on the result of He abundance analysis of dense circumstellar clumps in the young supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. These clumps, which are called quasi-stationary flocculi (QSFs), are known from previous optical studies to be enriched in He along with N, but the degree of He overabundance relative to H has remained uncertain. For several QSFs with near-infrared spectroscopic data, we have analyzed their He I 1.083 $μ$m/Pa$γ$ ratios together with the ratios of [Fe II] lines by using the Raymond shock code. According to our analysis, He is overabundant relative to H by a factor of $\les…
The circumstellar envelope of the hypergiant star IRC+10420 has been traced as far out in SiO J=2-1 as in CO J = 1-0 and CO J = 2-1, in dramatic contrast with the centrally condensed (thermal) SiO- but extended CO-emitting envelopes of giant and supergiant stars. Here, we present an observation of the circumstellar envelope in SiO J=1-0 that, when combined with the previous observation in {\sioii}, provide more stringent constraints on the density of the SiO-emitting gas than hitherto possible. The emission in SiO peaks at a radius of $\sim$2\arcsec\ whereas that in SiO J=2-1 emission peaks at…
