This article describes a search for high-mass resonances decaying to a pair of photons using a sample of $20.3$ fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and limits are reported in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum model. This theory leads to the prediction of graviton states, the lightest of which could be observed at the Large Hadron Collider. A lower limit of $2.66$ ($1.41$) TeV at 95% confidence level is set on the mass of the lightest graviton for couplings of $k/\overline{M}_{\mathrm{Pl}} = 0.1$ ($0.01$).
A search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy is presented. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.1/pb. No excess of such events is observed above the Standard Model background prediction. In the context of a specific model with one Universal Extra Dimension with compactification radius R and gravity-induced decays, values of 1/R < 728 GeV are excluded at 95% CL, providing the most sensitive limit on this model to date.
The large difference between the Planck scale and the electroweak scale, known as the hierarchy problem, has been addressed in some models through the existence of extra spatial dimensions. A search for evidence of extra spatial dimensions has been performed, through an analysis of the diphoton final state in data recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis uses a dataset of 2.12 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrts=7 TeV. The diphoton invariant mass spectrum is observed to be in good agreement with the expected Standard Model (SM) background. …
A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed in the diphoton decay channel. The data used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb-1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. In the diphoton mass range 110-150 GeV, the largest excess with respect to the background-only hypothesis is observed at 126.5 GeV, with a local significance of 2.8 standard deviations. Taking the look-elsewhere effect into account in the range 110-150 GeV, this significance becomes 1.5 standard deviations.…
A search for new spin-0 resonances decaying into two photons in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is described. The analysis is based on $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 3.2/fb and 12.2/fb recorded in 2015 and 2016, respectively. A deviation from the Standard Model background-only hypothesis corresponding to 3.4 standard deviations is observed in the 2015 data for a resonance mass hypothesis of 730 GeV. No significant excess at such mass over the background expectation is observed in the 2016 data. Limits on the production cross section times b…
The ATLAS experiment has measured the production cross-section of events with two isolated photons in the final state, in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The full data set acquired in 2010 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-1. The background, consisting of hadronic jets and isolated electrons, is estimated with fully data-driven techniques and subtracted. The differential cross-sections, as functions of the di-photon mass, total transverse momentum and azimuthal separation, are presented and compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD.

A specific benchmark model is considered where all the fermion couplings to the Higgs boson are set to zero and the bosonic couplings are kept at the Standard Model values (fermiophobic Higgs model). The largest excess with respect to the background-only hypothesis is found at 125.5 GeV, with a local significance …

A search has been performed, using the full 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ data sample of 8 TeV proton--proton collisions collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, for photons originating from a displaced vertex due to the decay of a neutral long-lived particle into a photon and an invisible particle. The analysis investigates the diphoton plus missing transverse momentum final state, and is therefore most sensitive to pair-production of long-lived particles. The analysis technique exploits the capabilities of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter to make precise measurements of the flight directi…
We consider the diphoton resonance at the 13 TeV LHC in a consistent model with new scalars and vector-like fermions added to the Standard Model (SM), which can be constructed from orbifold grand unified theories and string models. The gauge coupling unification can be achieved, neutrino masses can be generated radiatively, and electroweak vacuum stability problem can be solved. To explain the diphoton resonance, we study a spin-0 particle, and discuss various associated final states.

The large difference between the Planck scale and the electroweak scale, known as the hierarchy problem, is addressed in certain models through the postulate of extra spatial dimensions. A search for evidence of extra spatial dimensions in the diphoton channel has been performed using the full set of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb. The diphoton invariant mass spectrum is observed to be in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation. In t…
A measurement of the production processes of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed in the two-photon final state using 5.4 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphotons divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, called the signal strength, is found to be $μ= 1.17 \pm 0.27$ at the value of the Higgs boson mass measured by ATLAS, $m_{H}$ = 125.4 GeV. The analysis is optimized to measure the signal stre…
A search for a narrow diphoton mass resonance is presented based on data from 3.0 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity from p-bar p collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of a resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching fraction of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The resulting limits exclude Higgs bosons with masses below 106 GeV at a 95% Bayesian credibility level (C.L.) for one fermiophobic benchmark model.
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. The analysis is performed in the $H \rightarrow γγ$ decay channel using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The $pp…

The analysis is based on proton--proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded in 2015. Two searches are performed, one targeted at a spin-2 particle of mass larger than 500 GeV, using Randall--Sundrum graviton states as a benchmark model, and one optimized for a spin-0 particle of mass larger than 200 GeV. Varying both the mass and the decay width, the most significant deviation from the background-onl…
We report a search for diphoton events with large missing transverse energy produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The observed missing transverse energy distribution is well described by the standard model prediction, and 95% C.L. limits are derived on two realizations of theories beyond the standard model. In a gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario, the breaking scale Lambda is excluded for Lambda < 124 TeV. In a universal extra dimension mo…
Results are presented of a search for heavy particles decaying into two photons. The analysis is based on a 19.7 inverse femtobarn sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The diphoton mass spectrum from 150 to 850 GeV is used to search for an excess of events over the background. The search is extended to new resonances with natural widths of up to 10% of the mass value. No evidence for new particle production is observed and limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section times branching fraction to diphotons are de…
After the discovery of a Higgs boson, the measurements of its properties are at the forefront of research. The determination of the associated production of a Higgs boson and a pair of top quarks is of particular importance as the ttH Yukawa coupling is large and thus an excellent probe for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). For the complete LHC Run-1 dataset, the combined ATLAS and CMS signal strength (defined as the ratio of measured cross-section to the SM prediction) was $μ=2.3^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$, which indicated a mild excess with respect to the SM expectation. The results of the ttH sea…

We set 95% C.L. lower limits on the mass of the lightest graviton between 560 GeV and 1050 GeV for values of the coupling k/Mbar_pl between 0.01 and 0.1.
This article reports a measurement of the cross section of prompt isolated photon pair production in pp collisions at a total energy \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using data of 5.36 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured cross section, differential in basic kinematic variables, is compared with three perturbative QCD predictions, a leading order (LO) parton shower calculation and two next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. The NLO calculations reproduce most aspects of the data. By including photon radiation from quarks before and after har…

We present a calculation of Bayes-factors for the digamma resonance ($\digamma$) versus the SM in light of ATLAS 8 TeV 20.3/fb, 13 TeV 3.2/fb and 13 TeV 15.4/fb data, sidestepping any difficulties in interpreting significances in frequentist statistics. We matched, wherever possible, parameterisations in the ATLAS analysis. We calculated that the plausibility of the $\digamma$ versus the Standard Model increased by about eight in light of the 8 TeV 20.3/fb and 13 TeV 3.2/fb ATLAS data, somewhat justifying interest in $\digamma$ models. All told, however, in light of 15.4/fb data, the $\digamma…
A measurement is presented of differential cross sections for the Higgs boson (H) production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The analysis exploits the H to gamma gamma decay in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the diphoton system and of the associated jets. Results corrected for detector effects are compared with predictions at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as well a…
A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 10 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at \surds = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. In addition to searching for a resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum, we employ a multivariate discriminant technique for the first time in this channel at CDF. No evidence of signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the cont…
Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulous, and Dvali have proposed a model of low-scale quantum gravity featuring large extra dimensions. In this model, the exchange of Kaluza-Klein towers of gravitons can enhance the production rate of electron and photon pairs at high invariant mass in proton-antiproton collisions. The amount of enhancement is characterized by the parameter $M_S$, the fundamental Planck scale in the bulk extra dimensions. We have searched for this effect using 100 pb$^{-1}$ of diphoton data and 110 pb$^{-1}$ of dielectron data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab at $\sqrt{s}=1.…
Recent searches conducted at the Fermilab Tevatron for the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel are reported using 7.0 fb$^{-1}$ and 8.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the CDF and D0 experiments, respectively. Although the standard model (SM) branching fraction is small, the diphoton final state is appealing due to better diphoton mass resolution compared with dijet final states. In addition, other models --- such as fermiophobic models where the Higgs does not couple to fermions --- predict much larger branching fractions for the diphoton decay. Here, results are presented for both a SM …
We present the results of a search for supersymmetry with gauge-mediated breaking and $\NONE\toγ\Gravitino$ in the $γγ$+missing transverse energy final state. In 2.6$\pm$0.2 \invfb of $p{\bar p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$=$1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector we observe no candidate events, consistent with a standard model background expectation of 1.4$\pm$0.4 events. We set limits on the cross section at the 95% C.L. and place the world's best limit of 149 \gevc on the \none mass at $τ_{\tildeχ_1^0}$$\ll$1 ns. We also exclude regions in the \none\ mass-lifetime plane for $τ_{\tildeχ_1^0}$…

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.36/fb. The cross section is presented as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to the reaction mechanisms. The results are compared with three perturbative QCD calculations: (1) a leading order parton shower Monte Carlo, (2) a fixed next-to-leading order calculation and (3) a next-to-leading order/next-to-next-to-leading-log…
We present results of searches for diphoton resonances produced both inclusively and also in association with a vector boson (W or Z) using 100 pb^{-1} of p\bar p collisions using the CDF detector. We set upper limits on the product of cross section times branching ratio for both p\bar p\toγγ+ X and p\bar p\toγγ+ W/Z. Comparing the inclusive production to the expectations from heavy sgoldstinos we derive limits on the supersymmetry-breaking scale sqrt{F} in the TeV range, depending on the sgoldstino mass and the choice of other parameters. Also, using a NLO prediction for the associated produc…

The diphoton invariant mass spectrum of the data agrees well with the standard model expectation. We set upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum graviton, as a function of diphoton mass. We subsequently derive lower limits on the graviton mass of 459 GeV$/c^{2}$ and 963 GeV$/c^{2}$, at the 95% confidence lev…
We report a measurement of the rate of prompt diphoton production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 ~\hbox{TeV}$ using a data sample of 207 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). The background from non-prompt sources is determined using a statistical method based on differences in the electromagnetic showers. The cross section is measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found to be consistent with perturbative QCD predictions.
A search for large extra spatial dimensions via virtual-graviton exchange in the diphoton channel has been carried out with the CMS detector at the LHC. No excess of events above the standard model expectations is found using a data sample collected in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. New lower limits on the effective Planck scale in the range of 1.6-2.3 TeV at the 95% confidence level are set, providing the most restrictive bounds to date on models with more than two large extra dimensions.

Cross-section measurements for the production of a Higgs boson through gluon-gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, and in association with a vector bosonor a top-quark pair are reported. The signal strength, defined as the ratio of the observed to the expected signal yield, is measured for each of these production processes as well as inclusively. The global signal strength measurement of…
We present a measurement of direct photon pair production cross sections using 4.2 fb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton Collider. We subsequently derive lower limits for the graviton mass of 230 GeV/c2 and 850 GeV/c2, at the 95% confidence level, for coupling parameters (k/M_Pl) of 0.01 and 0.1 re…

Extrapolating this result to the full phase space and correcting for …
We present a search for a Higgs boson decaying into a pair of photons based on 9.6 fb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The search employs multivariate techniques to discriminate signal from the non-resonant background and is separately optimized for a standard model and a fermiophobic Higgs boson. A search for signals of new physics has been carried out in the channel p pbar -> gamma gamma + ETmiss. This signature is expected in various recently proposed supersymmetric (SUSY) models. We observe 842 events with two photons having transverse momentum ET(g) > 12 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta(g)| < 1.1. Of these, none have missing transverse energy (ETmiss) in excess of 25 GeV. The distribution of ETmiss is consistent with that of the expected background. We therefore set limits on production cross sections for selectron, sneutrino and neutralino pairs, decaying into photons. The limits range…
