We propose an anisotropic generalisation of the line correlation function (ALCF) to separate and quantify phase information in the large-scale structure of galaxies. The line correlation function probes the strictly non-linear regime of structure formation and since phase information drops out of the power spectrum, the line correlation function provides a complementary tool to commonly used techniques based on two-point statistics. Furthermore, it is independent of linear bias as well as the Gaussian variance on the modulus of the density field and thus may also prove to be advantageous compared to the bispectrum or similar higher-order statistics for certain cases. For future applications it is vital, though, to be able to account for observational effects that cause anisotropies in the distribution of galaxies. Based on a number of numerical studies, we find that our ALCF is well suited to accomplish this task and we demonstrate how the Alcock-Paczynski effect and kinematical redshift-space distortions can in principle be measured via the ALCF.
Multi-field inflation models and non-Bunch-Davies vacuum initial conditions both predict sizeable non-Gaussian primordial perturbations and anisotropic $μ$-type spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) blackbody. While CMB anisotropies allow us to probe non-Gaussianity at wavenumbers $k\simeq 0.05\,{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$, $μ$-distortion anisotropies are related to non-Gaussianity of primordial perturbation modes with much larger wavenumbers, $k\simeq 740\,{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$. Through cross-correlations between CMB and $μ$-distortion anisotropies, one can therefore shed light on the a…
Many recent works have shown that the angular resolution of ground-based detectors is too poor to characterize the anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB). For this reason, we asked ourselves if a constellation of space-based instruments could be more suitable. We consider the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a constellation of multiple LISA-like clusters, and the Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO). Specifically, we test whether these detector constellations can probe the anisotropies of the SGWB. For this scope, we considere…
We investigate the anisotropies of the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) produced by cosmic strings associated with the spontaneous U(1) symmetry breaking of Grand Unified Theory, which happens at the onset of inflation. The string network evolution is determined by primordial fluctuations and never reaches the scaling regime. The string loops are inhomogeneously distributed in large scale regions, resulting in large anisotropies in the SGWB. We find that the angular power spectrum of SGWB anisotropies depends on frequency, which is testable in multiband observations of GWs. In p…
Disformal vectors and anisotropies on a warped brane
We present a new probe of purely gravitationally coupled sectors with large anisotropies. These anisotropies are damped via gravitational interactions with the baryon-photon fluid, which is heated up in the process. The injected heat causes measurable distortions of the cosmic microwave background spectrum. We give analytic estimates for the size of the distortions and outline how to calculate them from first principles. These methods are applied to anisotropies in the form of a domain wall/cosmic string network or caused by a first order phase transition or scalar field dynamics. We find that…
We study the anisotropies of gravitational waves induced by weak hypermagnetic fields which are randomly distributed and oriented during the electroweak phase transition in the early universe. The theory setup of this study is the standard model plus a real singlet scalar field, which can produce the needed strongly first order electroweak phase transition. Then we investigate how the hypermagnetic fields can convert to magnetic fields and we compute the departure of energy difference between the symmetric phase and the broken phase when the magnetic fields are turned on. It is found that the …
Line-intensity mapping, being an imperfect observation of the line-intensity field in a cosmological volume, will be subject to various anisotropies introduced in observation. Existing literature in the context of CO and [C II] line-intensity mapping often predicts only the real-space, spherically averaged line-intensity power spectrum, with some works considering anisotropies while examining projection of interloper emission. We explicitly consider a simplified picture of redshift-space distortions and instrumental effects due to limited resolution, and how these distort an isotropic line-int…
Strongly lensed systems are powerful probes of the distribution of dark matter on small scales. In this paper, we show that line-of-sight haloes between the source and the observers give rise to a distinct anisotropic signature in the two-point function of the effective lensing deflection field. We show in particular that the non-linear coupling between line-of-sight haloes and the main-lens plane imprints a characteristic quadrupole moment on this two-point function whose amplitude reflects the abundance of such haloes within the strongly lensed field. We discuss how, by taking ratios of diff…
It has been known that a non-perfect fluid that accounts for dissipative viscous effects can evade a highly anisotropic chaotic mixmaster approach to a singularity. Viscosity is often simply parameterised in this context, so it remains unclear whether isotropisation can really occur in physically motivated contexts. We present a few examples of microphysical manifestations of viscosity in fluids that interact either gravitationally or, for a scalar field for instance, through a self-coupling term in the potential. In each case, we derive the viscosity coefficient and comment on the applicabili…
Parity-violating extensions of Maxwell electromagnetism induce a rotation of the linear polarization plane of photons during propagation. This effect, known as cosmic birefringence, impacts on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations producing a mixing of $E$ and $B$ polarization modes which is otherwise null in the standard scenario. Such an effect is naturally parametrized by a rotation angle which can be written as the sum of an isotropic component $α_0$ and an anisotropic one $δα(\hat{\mathbf{n}})$. In this paper we compute angular power spectra and bispectra involving $δα$ and t…
