We present a theoretical framework for evaluating effective interactions between localized spins mediated by itinerant electrons in double-exchange models. Performing the expansion with respect to the spin-dependent part of the electron hopping terms, we show a systematic way of constructing the effective spin model in the large Hund's coupling limit. As a benchmark, we examine the accuracy of this method by comparing the results with the numerical solutions for the spin-ice type model on a pyrochlore lattice. We also discuss an extension of the method to the double-exchange models with Heisenberg and $XY$ localized spins.
A periodic drive could alter the effective exchange interactions in magnetic materials. Here, we explore how exchange pathways affect the effective interactions of periodically driven magnetic materials. Aiming to apply Floquet engineering methods to two-dimensional magnetic materials, we consider realistic models and discuss the effect of a periodic drive on ligand-mediated exchange interactions. We show that depending on bond angles and the number of ligand ions involved in the exchange process, drive-induced changes can be very different from those calculated from direct-hopping models cons…
In this article we reply to the concerns raised by Harres $\textit{et al}$. [Phys. Rev. Lett. (to be published)] about some of the results reported in our original paper [T. Maity $\textit{et al}$. Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{110}$, 107201 (2013)]. We show that the magnetic hysteresis loops are not minor and both path dependency of exchange bias and presence of superspin glass phase in the nanocomposite are indisputable.
We investigate the influence of the carrier density and other parameters on the interlayer exchange in magnetic thin film systems. The system consists of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic layers where the carriers are allowed to move from layer to layer. For the ferromagnetic layers we use the Kondo-lattice model to describe interactions between itinerant electrons and local moments. The electrons' properties are calculated by a Green's function's equation of motion approach while the magnetization of the local moments is determined by a minimization of the free energy. As results we present magn…
The mechanism behind ferromagnetic exchange interaction in GdN is not well understood. It has been argued that it can be due to fourth order cross process of \textit{d-f} mixing and \textit{d-f} exchange. An alternative explanation suggests an anti- ferromagnetic interaction between Gd \textit{d} and N \textit{p} induced moments on the rock salt structure which aligns the nearest neighbor Gd \textit{f} moments ferromagnetically through the \textit{d-f} exchange. In this paper we present results of Curie temperature in GdN as a function of carrier density calculated within our multiband modifie…
The double exchange model describing interactions of itinerant electrons with localized spins is usually used to explain ferromagnetism in metals. We show that for a variety of crystal lattices of different dimensionalities and for a wide range of model parameters the ferromagnetic state is unstable against a non-collinear spiral magnetic order. We revisit the phase diagram of the double exchange model on a triangular lattice and show in a large part of the diagram the incommensurate spiral state has a lower energy than the previously discussed commensurate states. These results indicate that …
The ability to tune exchange (magnetic) interactions between 3d transition metals in perovskite structures has proven to be a powerful route to discovery of novel properties. Here we demonstrate that the introduction of 3d-5d exchange pathways in double perovskites enables additional tunability, a result of the large spatial extent of 5d wave functions. Using x-ray probes of magnetism and structure at high pressure, we show that compression of Sr2FeOsO6 drives an unexpected continuous change in the sign of Fe-Os exchange interactions and a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic ord…
Establishing the physical mechanism governing exchange interactions is fundamental for exploring exotic phases such as the quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in real materials. In this work, we address exchange interactions in Sr2CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O, a series of double perovskites that realize the spin-1/2 square lattice and were suggested to harbor a QSL ground state arising from random distribution of non-magnetic ions. Our {\it ab initio} multi-reference configuration interaction calculations show that replacing Te atoms with W atoms changes the dominant couplings from nearest to next-nearest nei…
We investigate the spectral properties of the two-orbital Hubbard model, including the double hopping term, by means of the dynamical mean field method. This Hamiltonian describes materials in which ferromagnetism is realized by the double exchange mechanism, like for instance manganites, nickelates or diluted magnetic semiconductors. The spectral function of the unoccupied states is characterized by a specific equidistant three peak structure. We emphasize the importance of the double hopping term on the spectral properties. We show the existence of a ferromagnetic phase due to electron dopin…
Hybrid nanocrystals (HNCs), based on ZnO nanorods (NRs) decorated with magnetic Fe-based domains, were synthesized via a colloidal seeded-growth method. The approach involved heterogeneous nucleation of Fe nanocrystals on size-tailored ZnO nanorod seeds in a noncoordinating solvent, followed by partial surface oxidation of the former to the corresponding Fe@FexOy core@shell domains. HNCs with variable population and size of the Fe-based nanodomains could be synthesized depending on the surface reactivity of the ZnO seeds. The structure-property relationships in these HNCs were carefully studie…
We investigate the Kondo effect in a double-quantum-dot which is capacitively coupled to a charge-Qubit. It is shown that due to this capacitive coupling, the bare inter-dot repulsive interaction in the double-quantum-dot is effectively reduced and eventually changed to an attractive interaction for strong couplings between the double-quantum-dot and the Qubit. By deriving the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of the system, we find that the low energy dynamics of the system corresponding to these two positive or negative effective interaction regimes can be described, respectively, by an isotr…
By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir $\mathit{L_{\mathrm{3}}}$ edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double perovskite iridate single crystals, La$_{2}$$\mathit{M}$IrO$_{6}$ ($\mathit{M}$ = Co, Ni, and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at $\sim$ 42(6) meV and $\sim$ 35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3$\mathit{d}$ ions, La$_{2}$CoIrO$_{6}$ and La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$, respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La$_{2}$ZnIrO$_{6}$ in which the…
We study the effects of opening of the band gap on the double exchange ferromagnetism. Applying the density-matrix renormalization group method and an analytical expansion from the dimer limit to the one-dimensional double exchange model, we demonstrate for a relevant region of the exchange coupling that, in the weak dimerization regime, the Peierls gap opens in the fully spin-polarized conduction band without affecting its ferromagnetism, whereas in the strong dimerization regime, the ferromagnetism is destroyed and the Mott gap opens instead, leading the system to the antiferromagnetic quasi…
We propose a quantum gate architecture that allows for the systematic control of the effective exchange interactions between magnetic impurities embedded in nano-scale graphene flakes connected by a gated bridge. The entanglement between the magnetic moment and the edge states of the fragments is used to electrostatically tune the exchange interaction from ferro to antiferromagnetic by merely changing the bridge's carrier density. By characterizing the effects of size and coupling parameters, we explore different operation regimes of this device by means of exact calculations with the density …
The double exchange model describing the coupling between conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments is relevant for a large family of physical systems including manganites. Here we reveal that the one dimensional double exchange model with an incommensurate magnetic elliptical spiral is a topological insulator with a Chern number $2\mathbb{Z}$ in the two dimensional space with one physical dimension and one ancillary dimension spanned by the Goldstone mode of the spiral. Moreover, the electronic states can be localized for a strong local exchange coupling. The topological protected e…
