We employ the Planck 2013 CMB temperature anisotropy and lensing data, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data to constrain a phenomenological $w$CDM model, where dark matter and dark energy interact. We assume time-dependent equation of state parameter for dark energy, and treat dark matter and dark energy as fluids whose energy-exchange rate is proportional to the dark-matter density. The CMB data alone leave a strong degeneracy between the interaction rate and the physical CDM density parameter today, $ω_c$, allowing a large interaction rate $|Γ| \sim H_0$. However, as has been known for a while, the BAO data break this degeneracy. Moreover, we exploit the CMB lensing potential likelihood, which probes the matter perturbations at redshift $z \sim 2$ and is very sensitive to the growth of structure, and hence one of the tools for discerning between the $Λ$CDM model and its alternatives. However, we find that in the non-phantom models ($w_{\mathrm{de}}>-1$), the constraints remain unchanged by the inclusion of the lensing data and consistent with zero interaction, $-0.14 < Γ/H_0 < 0.02$ at 95\% CL. On the contrary, in the phantom models ($w_{\mathrm{de}}<-1$), energy transfer from dark energy to dark matter is moderately favoured over the non-interacting model; $-0.57 < Γ/H_0 < -0.10$ at 95\% CL with CMB+BAO, while addition of the lensing data shifts this to $-0.46 < Γ/H_0 < -0.01$.
We constrain cosmological parameters using combined measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the correlation function of galaxies and Ly-αabsorbers that together cover 0.1 < z < 2.4. The BAO position measurements alone -- without fixing the absolute sound horizon `standard ruler' length with cosmic microwave background (CMB) data -- constrain Ω_m = 0.303 +/- 0.040 (68 per cent confidence) for a flat ΛCDM model, and w = -1.06^{+0.33}_{-0.32}, Ω_m = 0.292^{+0.045}_{-0.040} for a flat wCDM model. Adding other large-scale structure (LSS) clustering constraints -- correlatio…
We propose a new and robust method to test the consistency of the cosmic evolution given by a cosmological model. It is realized by comparing the combined quantity r_d^CMB/D_V^SN, which is derived from the comoving sound horizon r_d from cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements and the effective distance D_V derived from low-redshift Type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data, with direct and independent r_d/D_V obtained by baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements at median redshifts. We apply this test method for the Lambda-CDM and wCDM models, and investigate the consistency of the derived…
The proposed CMBPol mission will be able to detect the imprint of topological defects on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) provided the contribution is sufficiently strong. We quantify the detection threshold for cosmic strings and for textures, and analyse the satellite's ability to distinguish between these different types of defects. We also assess the level of danger of misidentification of a defect signature as from the wrong defect type or as an effect of primordial gravitational waves. A 0.002 fractional contribution of cosmic strings to the CMB temperature spectrum at multipole ten…
We determine the forecast errors on the absolute neutrino mass scale and the equation of state of dark energy by combining synthetic data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Planck surveyor. We use angular clustering of galaxies for DES in 7 redshift shells up to $z\sim 1.7$ including cross-correlations between different redshift shells. We study models with massless and massive neutrinos and three different dark energy models: $Λ$CDM ($w=-1$), wCDM (constant $w$), and waCDM (evolving equation of state parameter $w(a)=w_0 + w_{a}(1-a)$). We include the i…
We present a detailed and pedagogical analysis of recent cosmological data, including CMB, BAO, SnIa and the recent local measurement of $H_0$. We thus obtain constraints on the parameters of standard dark energy parameterizations, including $ΛCDM$, and $H(z)$ deformation models such as $wCDM$ (constant equation of state $w$ of dark energy), and the CPL model (corresponding to the evolving dark energy equation-of-state parameter $w(z) = w_0 + w_a \frac{z}{1+z}$). The fitted parameters include the dark matter density $Ω_{0m}$, the SnIa absolute magnitude $M$, the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the d…
We consider cosmic chronometer (CC) data for the Hubble parameter, quasar (QSO) luminosities data of X-rays and ultraviolet rays emission, and the latest measurements of the present value of the Hubble parameter from 2018 Planck mission (PL18), and SH0ES observations (SHOES) to constrain the present value of cosmic curvature density parameter. We consider three kinds of dark energy models: the $Λ$CDM model, the wCDM model, and the CPL parametrization. In all these three models, we find higher values of the matter-energy density parameter, $Ω_{\rm m0}$ compared to the one obtained from the Plan…
Deviations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) frequency spectrum from a pure blackbody tell an exciting story about the thermal history of our Universe. In this paper we illustrate how well future CMB measurements might decipher this tale, envisioning a PIXIE-like spectrometer, which could improve the distortion constraints obtained with COBE/FIRAS some 20 years ago by at least three orders of magnitude. This opens a large discovery space, offering deep insights to particle and early-universe physics, opportunities that no longer should be left unexplored. Specifically, we consider scena…
Cosmic microwave background lensing has become a new cosmological probe, carrying rich information on the matter power spectrum and distances over the redshift range $z\approx1$-4. We investigate the role of scale dependent new physics, such as from modified gravity, neutrino mass, and cold (low sound speed) dark energy, and its signature on CMB lensing. The distinction between different scale dependences, and the different redshift dependent weighting of the matter power spectrum entering into CMB lensing and other power spectra, imply that CMB lensing can probe simultaneously a diverse range…
We study the correlations between parameters characterizing neutrino physics and the evolution of dark energy. Using a fluid approach, we show that time-varying dark energy models exhibit degeneracies with the cosmic neutrino background over extended periods of the cosmic history, leading to a degraded estimation of the total mass and number of species of neutrinos. We investigate how to break degeneracies and combine multiple probes across cosmic time to anchor the behaviour of the two components. We use Planck CMB data and BAO measurements from the BOSS, SDSS and 6dF surveys to present curre…
In this paper we present results of applying the shear-ratio method to the RCSLenS data. The method takes the ratio of the mean of the weak lensing tangential shear signal about galaxy clusters, averaged over all clusters of the same redshift, in multiple background redshift bins. In taking a ratio the mass-dependency of the shear signal is cancelled-out leaving a statistic that is dependent on the geometric part of the lensing kernel only. We apply this method to 535 clusters and measure a cosmology-independent distance-redshift relation to redshifts z~1. In combination with Planck data the m…
We revisit the kink-like parametrization of the deceleration parameter q(z), which considers a transition, at $z_t$, from cosmic deceleration to acceleration. In this parametrization the initial, at $z \gg z_t$, value of the q-parameter is $q_i$, its final, z=-1, value is $q_f$ and the duration of the transition is parametrized by $τ$. By assuming a flat space geometry we obtain constraints on the free parameters of the model using recent data from type Ia supernovae, BAO, CMB and the Hubble parameter H(z). The use of H(z) data introduces an explicit dependence of the combined likelihood on th…
The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) experiment has detected reionization at the $5.5 σ$ level and has reported a mean optical depth of $0.088 \pm 0.015$. A powerful probe of reionization is the large-angle $EE$ polarization power spectrum, which is now (since the first five years of data from WMAP) cosmic variance limited for $2\le l \le6$. Here we consider partial reionization caused by WIMP dark matter annihilation, and calculate the expected polarization power spectrum. We compare the dark matter models with a standard 2-step reionization theory, and examine whether the models m…
In this work, we study the large scale structure formation in the modified gravity in the framework of Palatini formalism and compare the results with the equivalent smooth dark energy models as a tool to distinguish between these models. Through the inverse method, we reconstruct the dynamics of universe, modified gravity action and the structure formation indicators like the screened mass function and gravitational slip parameter. Consequently, we extract the matter density power spectrum for these two models in the linear regime and show that the modified gravity and dark energy models pred…

Lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) changes the morphology of pattern of temperature fluctuations, so topological descriptors such as Minkowski Functionals can probe the gravity model responsible for the lensing. We show how the recently introduced two-to-two and three-to-one kurt-spectra (and their associated correlation functions), which depend on the power spectrum of the lensing potential, can be used to probe modified gravity theories such as $f({R})$ theories of gravity and quintessence models. We also investigate models based on effective field theory, which include the con…
Of the many proposed extensions to the $Λ$CDM paradigm, a model in which neutrinos self-interact until close to the epoch of matter-radiation equality has been shown to provide a good fit to current cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, while at the same time alleviating tensions with late-time measurements of the expansion rate and matter fluctuation amplitude. Interestingly, CMB fits to this model either pick out a specific large value of the neutrino interaction strength, or are consistent with the extremely weak neutrino interaction found in $Λ$CDM, resulting in a bimodal posterior distr…
We explore the Minkowski functionals of weak lensing convergence map to distinguish between $f(R)$ gravity and the general relativity (GR). The mock weak lensing convergence maps are constructed with a set of high-resolution simulations assuming different gravity models. It is shown that the lensing MFs of $f(R)$ gravity can be considerably different from that of GR because of the environmentally dependent enhancement of structure formation. We also investigate the effect of lensing noise on our results, and find that it is likely to distinguish F5, F6 and GR gravity models with a galaxy surve…
CMB polarization data is usually analyzed using $E$ and $B$ modes because they are scalars quantities under rotations along the lines of sight and have distinct physical origins. We explore the possibility of using the Stokes parameters $Q$ and $U$ for complementary analysis and consistency checks in the context of searches for non-Gaussianity. We show that the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) of $Q,U$ are invariant under local rotations along the lines of sight even though $Q,U$ are spin-2 variables, for full sky analysis. The invariance does not hold for incomplete sky. For local type primordial …
The Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) effect is a global distortion of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectrum as a result of its interaction with a hot electron plasma in the intracluster medium of large structures gravitationally viralized such as galaxy clusters (GC). Furthermore, this~hot gas of electrons emits X-rays due to its fall in the gravitational potential well of the GC. The~analysis of SZ and X-ray data provides a method for calculating distances to GC at high redshifts. On the other hand, many galaxies and GC produce a Strong Gravitational Lens (SGL) effect, which has become a use…
Following a quasi model-independent approach we measure the transversal BAO mode at high redshift using the two-point angular correlation function (2PACF). The analyses done here are only possible now with the quasar catalogue from the twelfth data release (DR12Q) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, because it is spatially dense enough to allow the measurement of the angular BAO signature with moderate statistical significance and acceptable precision. Our analyses with quasars in the redshift interval z = [2.20,2.25] produce the angular BAO scale theta_BAO = 1.77 +- 0.31 deg with a statistical…
We present measurements of the anisotropic galaxy clustering from the Data Release 9 (DR9) CMASS sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). We analyze the broad-range shape of the monopole and quadrupole correlation functions to obtain constraints, at the effective redshift $z=0.57$ of the sample, on the Hubble expansion rate $H(z)$, the angular-diameter distance $D_A(z)$, the normalized growth rate $f(z)σ_8(z)$, the physical matter density $Ω_m h^2$, and the biased amplitude of matter fluctuation bσ_8(z). We obtain {$H(0.57)$, $D_A(0.57)$, $f(0.57)σ_8(0.57)$, $Ω_m …
The bulk motion of galaxies induced by the growth of cosmic structure offers a rare opportunity to test the validity of general relativity across cosmological scales. However, modified gravity can be degenerate in its effect with the unknown values of cosmological parameters. More seriously, even the `observed' value of the RSD (redshift-space distortions) used to measure the fluctuation growth rate depends on the assumed cosmological parameters (the Alcock-Paczynski effect). We give a full analysis of these issues, showing how to combine RSD with BAO (baryon acoustic oscillations) and CMB (Co…
Distance-redshift diagrams probe expansion history of the Universe. We show that the stellar mass-binding energy (massE) relation of galaxies proposed in our previous study offers a new distance ruler at cosmic scales. By using elliptical galaxies in the main galaxy sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we construct a distance-redshift diagram over the redshift range from 0.05 to 0.2 with the massE ruler. The best-fit dark energy density is 0.675+-0.079 for flat Lambda-CDM, consistent with those by other probes. At the median redshift of 0.11, the median distance is estimated …
The canonical acoustic dark energy model (cADE), which is based on a scalar field with a canonical kinetic term that rapidly converts potential to kinetic energy around matter radiation equality, alleviates the Hubble tension found in $Λ$CDM. We show that it successfully passes new consistency tests in the CMB damping tail provided by the ACT data, while being increasingly constrained and distinguished from alternate mechanisms by the improved CMB acoustic polarization data from Planck. The best fit cADE model to a suite of cosmological observations, including the SH0ES $H_0$ measurement, has …
We present optical light curves, redshifts, and classifications for 365 spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered by the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) Medium Deep Survey. We detail improvements to the PS1 SN photometry, astrometry and calibration that reduce the systematic uncertainties in the PS1 SN Ia distances. We combine the subset of 279 PS1 SN Ia ($0.03 < z < 0.68$) with useful distance estimates of SN Ia from SDSS, SNLS, various low-z and HST samples to form the largest combined sample of SN Ia consisting of a total of 1048 SN Ia ranging from $0.01 < z < 2.3$, which we call…
We study the cosmology of a specific class of nonlocal model of modified gravity, the so-called Deser-Woodard (DW) model, modifying the Einstein-Hilbert action by a term $\sim R f(\Box^{-1}R)$, where $f$ is a free function. Choosing $f$ so as to reproduce the $Λ{\rm CDM}$ cosmological background expansion history within the nonlocal model, we implement the model in a cosmological linear Einstein--Boltzmann solver and study the deviations to GR the model induces in the scalar and tensor perturbations. We observe that the DW nonlocal model describes a modified propagation for the gravitational w…
The possibility of constraining the parameters of scalar field dark energy with barotropic equation of state using different available datasets is discussed. It has been found that the initial value of dark energy equation of state parameter is constrained very weakly by most of the data. We have determined the constraints on this parameter, which come from the combined dataset including supernovae from the full SDSS compilation with the MLCS2k2 fitting of light curves. We discuss also the possibility of distinguishing between different dark energy models with barotropic equation of state usin…
In modified gravity the propagation of gravitational waves (GWs) is in general different from that in general relativity. As a result, the luminosity distance for GWs can differ from that for electromagnetic signals, and is affected both by the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}(z)$ and by a function $δ(z)$ describing modified propagation. We show that the effect of modified propagation in general dominates over the effect of the dark energy equation of state, making it easier to distinguish a modified gravity model from $Λ$CDM. We illustrate this using a nonlocal modification of gravit…
We present the first cosmological parameter constraints using measurements of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN). The analysis uses a subsample of 207 spectroscopically confirmed SNe Ia from the first three years of DES-SN, combined with a low-redshift sample of 122 SNe from the literature. Our "DES-SN3YR" result from these 329 SNe Ia is based on a series of companion analyses and improvements covering SN Ia discovery, spectroscopic selection, photometry, calibration, distance bias corrections, and evaluation of systematic uncertainties. For a fl…
The initial conditions for the density perturbations in the early Universe, which dictate the large scale structure and distribution of galaxies we see today, are set during inflation. Measurements of primordial non-Gaussianity are crucial for distinguishing between different inflationary models. Current measurements of the matter power spectrum from the CMB only constrain this on scales up to $k\sim 0.1$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Reaching smaller angular scales (higher values of $k$) can provide new constraints on non-Gaussianity. A powerful way to do this is by measuring the $\textrm{H}\textrm{I}$ matter …

Standard cosmology predicts that prior to matter-radiation equality about 41% of the energy density was in free-streaming neutrinos. In many beyond Standard Model scenarios, however, the amount and free-streaming nature of this component is modified. For example, this occurs in models with new neutrino self-interactions or an additional dark sector with interacting light particles. We consider several extensions of the standard cosmology that include a non-free-streaming radiation component as motivated by such particle physics models and use the final Planck data release to constrain them. Th…
