We present a 324.5MHz image of the NOAO Boötes field that was made using Very Large Array (VLA) P-band observations. The image has a resolution of 5.6x5.1arcsec, a radius of $2.05^\circ$ and a central noise of ~0.2mJy\beam. Both the resolution and noise of the image are an order of magnitude better than what was previously available at this frequency and will serve as a valuable addition to the already extensive multiwavelength data that are available for this field. The final source catalogue contains 1370 sources and has a median 325 to 1400MHz spectral index of -0.72. Using a radio colour-colour diagram of the unresolved sources in our catalogue, we identify 33 megahertz peaked-spectrum (MPS) sources. Based on the turnover frequency linear size relation for the gigahertz peaked-spectrum (GPS) and compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources, we expect that the MPS sources that are compact on scales of tens of milliarcseconds should be young radio loud active galactic nuclei at high (z>2) redshifts. Of the 33 MPS sources, we were able to determine redshifts for 24, with an average redshift of 1.3. Given that five of the sources are at z>2, that the four faint sources for which we could not find redshifts are likely at even higher redshifts and that we could only select sources that are compact on a scale of ~5arcsec, there is encouraging evidence that the MPS method can be used to search for high-redshift sources.
Characterising spectral variability of radio sources is a technique that offers the ability to determine the astrophysics of the intervening media, source structure, emission and absorption processes. We present broadband (0.072--10 GHz) spectral variability of 15 peaked-spectrum (PS) sources with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). These 15 PS sources were observed quasi-contemporaneously with ATCA and the MWA four to six times during 2020 with approximately a monthly cadence. Variability was not detected at 1--10GHz frequencies but 13 of the …
In this work, we study the optical properties of compact radio sources selected from the literature in order to determine the impact of the radio-jet in their circumnuclear environment. Our sample includes 58 Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and 14 Megahertz-Peaked spectrum (MPS) radio sources located at $z\leq 1$. The radio luminosity ($L_R$) of the sample varies between Log\,L$_R\sim$ 23.2 and 27.7 W\,Hz$^{-1}$. We obtained optical spectra for all sources from SDSS-DR12 and performed a stellar population synthesis using the {\sc starlight} code. We derived ste…
We present the radio properties of optically selected quasars with $z\geq3$. The complete sample consists of 102 quasars with a flux density level $S_{1.4}\geq100$ mJy in a declination range -35$^{\circ}$ $\leq$ Dec $\leq$ +49$^{\circ}$. The observations were obtained in 2017-2020 using the radio telescope RATAN-600. We measured flux densities at six frequencies 1.2, 2.3, 4.7, 8.2, 11.2, and 22 GHz quasi-simultaneously with uncertainties of 9-31 %. The detection rate is 100, 89, and 46 % at 4.7, 11.2, and 22 GHz, respectively. We have analysed the averaged radio spectra of the quasars based on…
Spectral variability of radio sources encodes information about the conditions of intervening media, source structure, and emission processes. With new low-frequency radio interferometers observing over wide fractional bandwidths, studies of spectral variability for a large population of extragalactic radio sources are now possible. Using two epochs of observations from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey that were taken one year apart, we search for spectral variability across 100--230 MHz for 21,558 sources. We present methodologies for detecting v…
We discuss the possible origin of the double-peaked profiles recently observed in Lyman-Alpha Emitters (LAEs) at the epoch of reionization ($z \gtrsim 6.5$) from obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). Combining the extent of the Lyman-$α$ near-zones estimated from the blue peak velocity offset in these galaxies, with the ionizing emissivity of quasars at $z \gtrsim 6$, we forecast the intrinsic UV and X-ray luminosities of the AGN needed to give rise to their double-peaked profiles. We also estimate the extent of the obscuration of the AGN by comparing their luminosities to those of similar qu…
Recent studies have shown that both 21cm HI absorption and soft X-ray absorption serve as excellent tracers of the dense and dusty gas near the active nucleus of young radio galaxies, offering new insight into the physical nature of the circumnuclear medium. To date, a correlation between the column densities derived using these absorption processes has been observed within Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. While it is possible that this correlation exists within the broader radio population, many samples of radio galaxies make this difficult to te…
We report our ongoing search for extremely inverted spectrum compact radio galaxies, for which the defining feature in the radio spectrum is not the spectral peak, but instead the slope of the spectrum (alpha) in the high-opacity (i.e., lower frequency) part of the radio spectrum. Specifically, our focus is on the spectral regime with spectral index, alpha >+2.5. The motivation for our study is, firstly, extragalactic sources with such extreme spectral index are extremely rare, because of the unavailability of right combination of sensitivity and resolution over a range of low frequencies. The…
A complete catalogue of broad-line AGNs and double-peaked emission lines from MaNGA integral-field spectroscopy of 10K galaxies: stellar population of AGNs, supermassive black holes, and dual AGNs
We conducted a Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observation of the low mass active galactic nucleus (AGN) in galaxy NGC 4293 ($z=0.003$). The object is associated with a low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER). Its black hole mass is estimated as $\sim10^5$ or $\sim10^7 M_\odot$. The VLBA 1.5 GHz image shows an inverse symmetric structure with two discrete radio blobs separated by an angular distance of $\sim120$ mas, corresponding to $\sim7$ parsec. Furthermore, its integrated radio spectrum has a turnover at the frequency of $\sim0.44$ GHz. Based on the compactness and spectrum, t…
