We demonstrate that massive fields, such as dark matter, can directly produce a cosmological evolution of the fundamental constants of Nature. We show that a scalar or pseudoscalar (axion-like) dark matter field $ϕ$, which forms a coherently oscillating classical field and interacts with Standard Model particles via quadratic couplings in $ϕ$, produces `slow' cosmological evolution and oscillating variations of the fundamental constants. We derive limits on the quadratic interactions of $ϕ$ with the photon, electron and light quarks from measurements of the primordial $^4$He abundance produced during Big Bang nucleosynthesis and recent atomic dysprosium spectroscopy measurements. These limits improve on existing constraints by up to 15 orders of magnitude. We also derive limits on the previously unconstrained linear and quadratic interactions of $ϕ$ with the massive vector bosons from measurements of the primordial $^4$He abundance.
It is well known that gravitons can convert into photons, and vice versa, in the presence of cosmological magnetic fields. We study this conversion process in the context of atomic dark matter scenario. In this scenario, we can expect cosmological dark magnetic fields, which are free from the stringent constraint from the cosmic microwave observations. We find that gravitons can effectively convert into dark photons in the presence of cosmological dark magnetic fields. The graviton-dark photon conversion effect may open up a new window for ultra high frequency gravitational waves.
We study the gravitational production of super-Hubble-mass dark matter in the very early universe. We first review the simplest scenario where dark matter is produced mainly during slow roll inflation. Then we move on to consider the cases where dark matter is produced during the transition period between inflation and the subsequent cosmological evolution. The limits of smooth and sudden transitions are studied, respectively. The relic abundances and the cosmological collider signals are calculated.
Scalar cosmological perturbations are investigated in the framework of a model with interacting dark energy and dark matter. In addition to these constituents, the inhomogeneous Universe is supposed to be filled with the standard noninteracting constituents corresponding to the conventional $Λ$CDM model. The interaction term is chosen in the form of a linear combination of dark sector energy densities with evolving coefficients. The methods of discrete cosmology are applied, and strong theoretical constraints on the parameters of the model are derived. A brief comparison with observational dat…
We discuss two possible scenarios, namely the curvaton mechanism and the dark matter density modulation, where non-Gaussianity signals of superheavy dark matter produced by gravity can be enhanced and observed. In both scenarios, superheavy dark matter couples to an additional light field as a mediator. In the case of derivative coupling, the resulting non-Gaussianities induced by the light field can be large, which can provide inflationary evidences for these superheavy dark matter scenarios.
Axions seem ubiquitous in string theories and some of them may be produced non-thermally by heavy scalar decays, contributing to dark radiation. We study various cosmological effects of photons produced from the axionic dark radiation through axion-photon conversion in the presence of primordial magnetic fields, and derive tight constraints on the combination of the axion-photon coupling and the primordial magnetic field.
Recently, the so-called Elko spinor field has been proposed to be a candidate of dark energy. It is a non-standard spinor and has unusual properties. When the Elko spinor field is used in cosmology, its unusual properties could bring some interesting consequences. In the present work, we discuss the cosmological coincidence problem in the spinor dark energy models by using the dynamical system method. Our results show that the cosmological coincidence problem should be taken to heart in the investigations of spinor dark energy models.
We derive cosmological constraints on the annihilation cross section of dark matter with velocity-dependent structure, motivated by annihilating dark matter models through Sommerfeld or Breit-Wigner enhancement mechanisms. In models with annihilation cross section increasing with decreasing dark matter velocity, big-bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic microwave background give stringent constraints.
This brief contribution is devoted to phenomenological consequences of deviations from Lorentz invariance in gravity and dark matter. We will discuss main effects on cosmological observables and current constraints derived from astrophysical and cosmological data.
We consider the cosmological relaxation solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem using the fermion production as a dominant friction force. In our approach, neither super-Planckian field excursions nor a large number of e-folds arise, and scanning over thermal Higgs mass squared is avoided. The produced fermions from the relaxion source through the derivative coupling are SM-singlets, what we call dark fermions, and they can serve as the keV scale warm dark matter candidates.
Dark energy is investigated from the perspective of quantum cosmology. It is found that, together with an appropriate normal ordering factor $q$, only when there is dark energy then can the cosmological wave function be normalized. This interesting observation may require further attention.
Evidence has continued to accumulate over the last few decades as to the existence and nature of dark matter. Depending on the particle candidate, the dark matter can exhibit one of several cosmologically defined models: hot dark matter, cold dark matter, warm dark matter, self-interacting dark matter, and fuzzy dark matter. In this paper I review the relevance and status of these models, whether it is possible for more than one of these models to each constitute some fraction of the dark matter, and discuss the prospects for determining if any of these models can successfully describe the pro…
We discuss the possibility that the cold dark matter mass profiles contain information on the cosmological constant, and that such information constrains the nature of cold dark matter (CDM). We call this approach Modified Dark Matter (MDM). In particular, we examine the ability of MDM to explain the observed mass profiles of 13 galaxy clusters. Using general arguments from gravitational thermodynamics, we provide a theoretical justification for our MDM mass profile and successfully compare it to the NFW mass profiles both on cluster and galactic scales. Our results suggest that indeed the CDM…
The formalism of dark energy based on modeling speed of sound as a function of equation of state parameter is elaborated. A specific model which allows detailed study of cosmological constant boundary crossing is introduced and analytical solutions for the model dynamics are obtained. It is shown how in specific parameter regimes dark energy can be a transient phenomenon. It is further demonstrated how the model reproduces specific features of recent fits of dark energy $w(z)$ to observational data.
The standard model of particle physics is extended by adding a purely neutrinophilic dark sector. It is shown that theories which accommodate standard model neutrinos as dark radiation are resurrected. Sterile neutrinos bridge the visible and the dark sector and can keep their mutual interactions effective even after the epoch of big bang nucleosythesis. This prolonged contact between dark matter and standard model neutrinos solves the well-known small-scale structure problems of the cosmological standard model. The dark sector presented in this work satisfies all experimental and observationa…
For the current central values of the Higgs and top masses, the Standard Model Higgs potential develops an instability at a scale of the order of $10^{11}$ GeV. We show that a cosmological signature of such instability could be dark matter in the form of primordial black holes seeded by Higgs fluctuations during inflation. The existence of dark matter might not require physics beyond the Standard Model.
Non-thermalized dark matter is a cosmologically viable alternative to the widely studied weakly interacting massive particle. We study the evolution of the dark matter phase-space distributions arising from freeze-in and superWIMP production as well as the combination of both. Utilizing our implementation in CLASS, we investigate the cosmological imprints on the matter power spectrum, constrained by Lyman-$α$ forest observations. For the explicit example of a colored $t$-channel mediator model, we explore the cosmologically allowed parameter space highlighting the interplay of Lyman-$α$ constr…
The dark axion portal is a coupling of an axion-like particle to a dark photon kinetically mixed with the visible photon. We show how this portal, when applied to the relaxion, can lead to cosmological relaxation of the weak scale using dark photon production. The key backreaction mechanism involves the Schwinger effect: As long as electroweak symmetry is unbroken, Schwinger production of massless Standard Model fermions, which carry dark millicharges, suppresses the dark photon production. Once the electroweak symmetry is broken, the fermions acquire mass and the suppression is lifted. An enh…
We numerically and analytically explore the background cosmological dynamics of multifield dark energy with highly nongeodesic or "spinning" field-space trajectories. These extensions of standard single-field quintessence possess appealing theoretical features and observable differences from the cosmological standard model. At the level of the cosmological background, we perform a phase-space analysis and identify approximate attractors with late-time acceleration for a wide range of initial conditions. Focusing on two classes of field-space geometry, we derive bounds on parameter space by dem…
We explore the cosmological consequences of kinetically mixed dark photons with a mass between 1 MeV and 10 GeV, and an effective electromagnetic fine structure constant as small as $10^{-38}$. We calculate the freeze-in abundance of these dark photons in the early Universe and explore the impact of late decays on BBN and the CMB. This leads to new constraints on the parameter space of mass $m_V$ vs kinetic mixing parameter $κ$.
We consider a cosmological model in which the two major fluid components of the Universe, dark energy and dark matter, flow with distinct four-velocities. This cosmological configuration is equivalent to a single anisotropic fluid, expanding with a four-velocity that is an appropriate combination of the two fluid four-velocities. The energy density of the single cosmological fluid is larger than the sum of the energy densities of the two perfect fluids, i.e., dark energy and dark matter, respectively, and contains a correction term due to the anisotropy generated by the differences in the four…
Models where Dark Matter and Dark Energy interact with each other have been proposed to solve the coincidence problem. We review the motivations underlying the need to introduce such interaction, its influence on the background dynamics and how it modifies the evolution of linear perturbations. We test models using the most recent observational data and we find that the interaction is compatible with the current astronomical and cosmological data. Finally, we describe the forthcoming data sets from current and future facilities that are being constructed or designed that will allow a clearer u…
We study cosmological models with interaction between dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM). For the interaction term $Q$ in cosmic evolution equations, there is a model-independent degeneracy-breaking (D-B) point when $Q_{1}$ (a part of $Q$) equals to zero, where the interaction can be probed without degeneracy between the constant DE equation of state (EoS).
Recent cosmological and astrophysical observations point out that the Universe is in accelerating expansion and filled up with non-luminous matter. In order to explain the observed large scale structures and this accelerating behavior one needs a huge amounts of Dark Energy and Dark Matter. Although many attempts have been done, both at theoretical and experimental level, up to now there are several models proposed to explain such mysterious components. However, no final conclusion on the nature of dark components has been reached up to now so the question is completely open. In this paper, we…
Light dark photons are subject to various plasma effects, such as Debye screening and resonant oscillations, which can lead to a more complex cosmological evolution than is experienced by conventional cold dark matter candidates. Maintaining a consistent history of dark photon dark matter requires ensuring that the super-thermal abundance present in the early Universe $\textit{(i)}$ does not deviate significantly after the formation of the CMB, and $\textit{(ii)}$ does not excessively leak into the Standard Model plasma after BBN. We point out that the role of non-resonant absorption, which ha…
A cosmological approach based on considering a cosmic background with non-zero torsion is shown in order to give an option of explaining a possible phantom evolution, not ruled out according to the current observational data. We revise some aspects of the formal schemes on torsion and, according them, we develop a formalism which can be an interesting alternative for exploring Cosmology.
We present the cosmological constraints on the cross section of baryon-dark matter interactions for the dark matter mass below the MeV scale from the Planck CMB (cosmic microwave background) and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) Lyman-$α$ forest data. To explore the dark matter mass $m_χ\lesssim 1$ MeV for which the dark matter's free-streaming effect can suppress the observable small scale density fluctuations, in addition to the acoustic oscillation damping in existence of the baryon-dark matter coupling, we apply the approximated treatment of dark matter free-streaming analogous to that of th…
We discuss a new interacting model for the cosmological dark sector in which the attenuated dilution of cold dark matter scales as $a^{-3}f(a)$, where f(a) is an arbitrary function of the cosmic scale factor $a$. From thermodynamic arguments, we show that f(a) is proportional to entropy source of the particle creation process. In order to investigate the cosmological consequences of this kind of interacting models, we expand f(a) in a power series and viable cosmological solutions are obtained. Finally, we use current observational data to place constraints on the interacting function f(a).
Cosmic Microwave Background satellite missions as the on-going Planck experiment are expected to provide the strongest constraints on a wide set of cosmological parameters. Those constraints, however, could be weakened when the assumption of a cosmological constant as the dark energy component is removed. Here we show that it will indeed be the case when there exists a coupling among the dark energy and the dark matter fluids. In particular, the expected errors on key parameters as the cold dark matter density and the angular diameter distance at decoupling are significantly larger when a dark…
The thorny issue of relating information theory to cosmology is here addressed by assuming a possible connection between quantum entanglement measures and observable universe. In particular, we propose a cosmological toy model, where the equation of state of the cosmological fluid, which drives the today observed cosmic acceleration, can be inferred from quantum entanglement between different cosmological epochs. In such a way the dynamical dark energy results as byproduct of quantum entanglement.
In this review we consider in detail different theoretical topics associated with interaction in the dark sector. We study linear and nonlinear interactions which depend on the dark matter and dark energy densities. We consider a number of different models (including the holographic dark energy and dark energy in a fractal universe) with interacting dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM), have done a thorough analysis of these models. The main task of this review was not only to give an idea about the modern set of different models of dark energy, but to show how much can be diverse dynamics of…
Assisted annihilation generates thermal sub-GeV dark matter through a novel annihilation between a pair of dark matter and standard-model-like states, called the "assister". We show that, depending on the mass hierarchy between the assister and dark matter, there can be either a suppression or a boost of the effective cross section. This augmentation enables the possibility of $\mathcal{O}(100)$ MeV scale dark matter with perturbative coupling that saturates the relic density estimates while being relatively insulated from cosmological constraints like big bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic micro…
It is shown that the first law of thermodynamics and the holographic principle applied to an arbitrary large cosmic causal horizon naturally demand the zero cosmological constant and non-zero dynamical dark energy in the form of the holographic dark energy. Semiclassical analysis shows that the holographic dark energy has a parameter $d=1$ and an equation of state comparable to current observational data, if the entropy of the horizon saturates the Bekenstein-Hawking bound. This result indicates that quantum field theory should be modified at large scale to explain dark energy. The relations a…
In this work, we study tracker phantom dark energy models with a general parameterization of the scalar potentials. Our analysis also considers the scenario of having both phantom field and the cosmological constant as the dark energy components. A detailed statistical analysis with current cosmological observations shows an increase in the value of the Hubble parameter due to the presence of phantom dark energy but it can not alleviate the Hubble tension completely. Our results using Bayesian methods suggests a decisive evidence in favor of a phantom field over a positive cosmological constan…
We consider the global cosmological evolution and the evolution of the density contrast in the Bose-Einstein condensate dark matter model, in the framework of a Post-Newtonian cosmological approach. In the Bose-Einstein model, dark matter can be described as a non-relativistic, Newtonian gravitational condensate, whose density and pressure are related by a barotropic equation of state. For a condensate with quartic non-linearity, the equation of state is polytropic with index $n=1$. The basic equation describing the evolution of the perturbations of the Bose-Einstein condensate is obtained, an…
The solutions of the field equations of the conformal theory of gravitation with Dirac scalar field in Weyl-Cartan spacetime in very early universe are obtained. In this theory dark energy (describing by an effective cosmological constant) is a function of the Dirac scalar field $β$. These solutions describe the exponential decreasing of $β$ at the first exponential stage of inflation. One of these solutions has a limit to a constant value of the dark energy at large time that can give a way to solving the fundamental cosmological constant problem as a consequence of the fields dynamics in the…
We investigate the interaction between dark energy and dark matter in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics of open systems with matter creation/annihilation. We consider dark energy and dark matter as an interacting two component (scalar field and "ordinary" dark matter) cosmological fluid in a homogeneous spatially flat and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) Universe. The thermodynamics of open systems as applied together with the gravitational field equations to the two component cosmological fluid leads to a generalization of the elementary dark energy-dark mater interaction…
Cosmological observables are used to construct cosmological models. Since cosmological observations are limited to the light cone, a fixed number of observables (even measured to arbitrary accuracy) may not uniquely determine a cosmological model without additional assumptions or considerations. A prescription for constructing a spherically symmetric, inhomogeneous cosmological model that exactly reproduces the luminosity-distance as a function of redshift and the light-cone mass density as a function of redshift of a $Λ$CDM model is employed to gain insight into how an inhomogeneous cosmologi…
We show the way of dark matter and dark energy presentation via ansatzs on the kinetic energies of the fields in the two-component chiral cosmological model. To connect a kinetic interaction of dark matter and dark energy with observational data the reconstruction procedure for the chiral metric component $h_{22}$ and the potential of (self)interaction $V$ has been developed. The reconstruction of $h_{22}$ and $V$ for the early and later inflation have been performed. The proposed model is confronted to $ΛCDM$ model as well.
Neutrinos are one of the major puzzles in modern physics. Despite measurements of mass differences, the Standard Model of particle physics describes them as exactly massless. Additionally, recent measurements from both particle physics experiments and cosmology indicate the existence of more than the three Standard Model species. Here we review the cosmological evidence and its possible interpretations.
In supersymmetric axion models, if the gravitino or axino is the lightest SUSY particle (LSP), the other is often the next-to-LSP (NLSP). We investigate the cosmology of such a scenario and point out that the lifetime of the NLSP naturally becomes comparable to the present age of the universe in a viable parameter region. This is a well-motivated example of the so-called decaying dark matter model, which is recently considered as an extension of the $Λ$CDM model to relax some cosmological tensions.
As so far, the redshift of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can extend to $z\sim 8$ which makes it as a complementary probe of dark energy to supernova Ia (SN Ia). However, the calibration of GRBs is still a big challenge when they are used to constrain cosmological models. Though, the absolute magnitude of GRBs is still unknown, the slopes of GRBs correlations can be used as a useful constraint to dark energy in a completely cosmological model independent way. In this paper, we follow Wang's model-independent distance measurement method and calculate their values by using 109 GRBs events via the so-ca…
In this work we extend the first order formalism for cosmological models that present an interaction between a fermionic and a scalar field. Cosmological exact solutions describing universes filled with interacting dark energy and dark matter have been obtained. Viable cosmological solutions with an early period of decelerated expansion followed by late acceleration have been found, notably one which presents a dark matter component dominating in the past and a dark energy component dominating in the future. In another one, the dark energy alone is the responsible for both periods, similar to …
We study particle decay as the origin of dark radiation. After elaborating general properties and useful parametrisations we provide model-independent and easy-to-use constraints from nucleosynthesis, the cosmic microwave background and structure formation. Bounds on branching ratios and mass hierarchies depend in a unique way on the time of decay. We demonstrate their power to exclude well-motivated scenarios taking the example of the lightest ordinary sparticle decaying into the gravitino. We point out signatures and opportunities in cosmological observations and structure formation. For exa…
We consider a scenario where dark energy and baryons are dynamically coupled without any energy transfer. In this scenario, the background cosmology is unaffected and, at the perturbations level, the coupling only appears through the corresponding Euler equations of dark energy and baryons. We then explore some phenomenological consequences of this scenario and their signatures in several cosmological observables. In particular, we show its ability to suppress the growth of cosmic structures. We also constrain the parameters of the model with cosmological data and show that an interaction of d…
Previous quantum field estimations of the QCD vacuum in the expanding space-time lead to a dark energy component scaling linearly with the Hubble parameter, which gives the correct figure for the observed cosmological term. Here we show that this behaviour also appears at the classical level, as a result of the chiral symmetry breaking in a low energy, effective $σ$-model. The dark sector is described in a unified way by the $σ$ condensate and its fluctuations, giving rise to a decaying dark energy and a homogeneous creation of non-relativistic dark particles. The creation rate and the future …
We consider a cosmology with decaying metastable dark energy and assume that a decay process of this metastable dark energy is a quantum decay process. Such an assumption implies among others that the evolution of the Universe is irreversible and violates the time reversal symmetry. We show that if to replace the cosmological time $t$ appearing in the equation describing the evolution of the Universe by the Hubble cosmological scale time, then we obtain time dependent $Λ(t)$ in the form of the series of even powers of the Hubble parameter $H$: $Λ(t) = Λ(H)$. Out special attention is focused on…
Future cosmological surveys will probe the expansion history of the universe and constrain phenomenological models of dark energy. Such models do not address the fine-tuning problem of the vacuum energy, i.e. the cosmological constant problem (c.c.p.), but can make it spectacularly worse. We show that this is the case for 'interacting dark energy' models in which the masses of the dark matter states depend on the dark energy sector. If realised in nature, these models have far-reaching implications for proposed solutions to the c.c.p. that require the number of vacua to exceed the fine-tuning …
Evolution of cosmological perturbations is considered in the model with dynamical dark energy which non-gravitationally interacts with dark matter. The dark energy equation of state parameter (EoS) is varying in time and is parameterized by its adiabatic sound speed. Such model of interacting dark energy has advantages over model with constant EoS, because it avoids non-adiabatic instabilities of dark energy at radiation dominated epoch for certain types of interaction in dark sector. The stability conditions for solutions of equations of dark energy perturbations were derived. The impact of s…
We show that Dark Matter consisting of ultralight bosons in a Bose-Einstein condensate induces, via its quantum potential, a small positive cosmological constant which matches the observed value. This explains its origin and why the densities of Dark Matter and Dark Energy are approximately equal.
The statefinder diagnosic is a useful method for distinguishing different dark energy models. In this paper, we investigate the new agegraphic dark energy model with interaction between dark energy and matter component by using statefinder parameter pair $\{r, s\}$ and study its cosmological evolution. We plot the trajectories of the new agegraphic dark energy model for different interaction cases in the statefinder plane. As a result, the influence of the interaction on the evolution of the universe is shown in the statefinder diagrams.
We study the stability of a recently proposed model of scalar-field matter called mimetic dark matter or imperfect dark matter. It has been known that mimetic matter with higher derivative terms suffers from gradient instabilities in scalar perturbations. To seek for an instability-free extension of imperfect dark matter, we develop an effective theory of cosmological perturbations subject to the constraint on the scalar field's kinetic term. This is done by using the unifying framework of general scalar-tensor theories based on the ADM formalism. We demonstrate that it is indeed possible to c…
We consider the growth of cosmological perturbations to the energy density of dark matter during matter domination when dark matter is a scalar field that has undergone Bose-Einstein condensation. We study these inhomogeneities within the framework of both Newtonian gravity, where the calculation and results are more transparent, and General Relativity. The direction we take is to derive analytical expressions, which can be obtained in the small pressure limit. Throughout we compare our results to those of the standard cosmology, where dark matter is assumed pressureless, using our analytical …
In the present work, motivated by the work of Cai and Su [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 81}, 103514 (2010)], we propose a new type of interaction in dark sector, which can change its sign when our universe changes from deceleration to acceleration. We consider the cosmological evolution of quintessence and phantom with this type of interaction, and find that there are some scaling attractors which can help to alleviate the cosmological coincidence problem. Our results also show that this new type of interaction can bring new features to cosmology.
We present a general analytical treatment of cosmological models commanded by three interactive fluids with arbitrary barotropic indexes. The variable equations of state case are applicable to universes with quintessences, k essences and holographic fluids and we pay some attention to the holographic case. We also propose the need to extend the functional forms of the holographic energy densities that are usual in the literature in the face of the incompatibility presented by them when special interactions are used.
The local measurement of $H_0$ is in tension with the prediction of $Λ$CDM model based on the Planck data. This tension may imply that dark energy is strengthened in the late-time Universe. We employ the latest cosmological observations on CMB, BAO, LSS, SNe, $H(z)$ and $H_0$ to constrain several interacting dark energy models. Our results show no significant indications for the interaction between dark energy and dark matter. The $H_0$ tension can be moderately alleviated, but not totally released.
We propose a ultraviolet complete theory for cold dark matter(CDM) and sterile neutrino that can accommodate both cosmological data and neutrino oscillation experiments at $1σ$ level. A new $U(1)_X$ dark gauge symmetry is introduced, and is assumed to be broken at $\sim \mathcal{O}$(MeV) scale. Such a light mediator for DM's self-scattering and scattering-off sterile neutrinos can resolve three controversies for cold DM on small cosmological scales, cusp vs. core, too-big-to-fail and missing satellites problems. We can also accommodate $\sim$ eV scale sterile neutrinos as the hot dark matter(H…
