Low luminosity galaxies may be the building blocks of more luminous systems. Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) observations of the low luminosity, early-type galaxy NGC59 are obtained and analysed. These data are used to measure the stellar population parameters in the centre and off-centre regions of this galaxy, in order to uncover its likely star formation history. We find evidence of older stars, in addition to young stars in the emission line regions. The metallicity of the stellar population is constrained to be [Z/H] ~ -1.1 to -1.6, which is extremely low, even for this low luminosity galaxy, since it is not classed as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The measured [alpha/Fe] ratio is sub-solar, which indicates an extended star formation history in NGC59. If such objects formed the building blocks of more massive, early-type galaxies, then they must have been gaseous mergers, rather than dry mergers, in order to increase the metals to observed levels in luminous, early-type galaxies.
We investigate the dependence of galaxy clustering at $z \sim 4 - 7$ on UV-luminosity and stellar mass. Our sample consists of $\sim$ 10,000 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the XDF and CANDELS fields. As part of our analysis, the $M_\star - M_{\rm UV}$ relation is estimated for the sample, which is found to have a nearly linear slope of $d\log_{10} M_\star / d M_{\rm UV} \sim 0.44$. We subsequently measure the angular correlation function and bias in different stellar mass and luminosity bins. We focus on comparing the clustering dependence on these two properties. While UV-luminosity is only r…
We measured evolution of the $K$-band luminosity function and stellar mass function for red and blue galaxies at $z<1.2$ using a sample of 353 594 $I<24$ galaxies in 8.26 square degrees of Boötes. We addressed several sources of systematic and random error in measurements of total galaxy light, photometric redshift and absolute magnitude. We have found that the $K$-band luminosity density for both red and blue galaxies increased by a factor of 1.2 from $z\sim1.1$ to $z\sim0.3$, while the most luminous red (blue) galaxies decreased in luminosity by 0.19 (0.33) mag or $\times0.83 (0.74)$. These …
We introduce the FirstLight project that aims to generate a large database of high-resolution, zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation around the epoch of reionisation ($z\geq6$). The first results of this program agree well with recent observational constraints at z=6-8, including the UV luminosity function and galaxy stellar mass function, as well as the scaling relationships between halo mass, stellar mass, and UV magnitude. The UV luminosity function starts to flatten below MUV>-14 due to stellar feedback in halos with maximum circular velocities of V=30-40 km/s. The power-law slope of the…
Early-type galaxies (ETGs) host a hot ISM produced mainly by stellar winds, and heated by Type Ia supernovae and the thermalization of stellar motions. High resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations showed that ordered rotation in the stellar component results in the formation of a centrifugally supported cold equatorial disc. In a recent numerical investigation we found that subsequent generations of stars are formed in this cold disc; this process consumes most of the cold gas, leaving at the present epoch cold masses comparable to those observed. Most of the new stellar mass formed a few Gyr…
X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) originating from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is tightly correlated with the host galaxy's star-formation rate (SFR). We explore this connection at sub-galactic scales spanning ${\sim}$7 dex in SFR and ${\sim}$8 dex in specific SFR (sSFR). There is good agreement with established relations down to ${\rm SFR {\simeq} 10^{-3}\,M_\odot \, yr^{-1}}$, below which an excess of X-ray luminosity emerges. This excess likely arises from low mass X-ray binaries. The intrinsic scatter of the $L_X$-SFR relation is constant, not correlated with SFR. Different star formation indi…
Measurement of black hole mass for low-$z$ ($z\leq 0.8$) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) is difficult due to the strong contribution from host galaxy stellar light necessitating detailed spectral decomposition to estimate the AGN luminosity. Here, we present an empirical relation to estimate host galaxy stellar luminosity from the optical spectra of AGNs at $z\leq 0.8$. The spectral data were selected from the fourteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR14) quasar catalog having a signal-to-noise ratio at 5100 Å(SNR$_{5100}$) $>$10 containing 11415 quasars. The median total l…
We used archival Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 images to obtain the Luminosity Function of the remote globular cluster NGC2419 from two magnitudes above the Horizontal Branch level down to \sim3.0 magnitudes below the Turn Off point (to M_I\sim6.4), approximately covering the range of initial stellar masses 0.5 M_sun<= m <= 0.9 M_sun. The completeness-corrected Luminosity Function does not display any change of shape over the radial range covered by the WFC3 data, out to ~6 core radii (r_c), or, equivalently, to ~2 half-light radii. The Luminosity Function in this radial range is also identical …
We measure the evolution of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) and the stellar mass function (SMF) of Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters (LAEs) from z~2 to z~6 by exploring ~4000 LAEs from the SC4K sample. We find a correlation between Lya luminosity (LLya) and rest-frame UV (M_UV), with best-fit M_UV=-1.6+-0.2 log10(LLya/erg/s)+47+-12 and a shallower relation between LLya and stellar mass (Mstar), with best-fit log10( Mstar/Msun)=0.9+-0.1 log10(LLya/erg/s)-28+-4.0. An increasing LLya cut predominantly lowers the number density of faint M_UV and low Mstar LAEs. We estimate a proxy for the full…
The Voit et al. (2020) black hole feedback valve model predicts relationships between stellar velocity dispersion and atmospheric structure among massive early-type galaxies. In this work, we test that model using the Chandra archival sample of 49 early-type galaxies from Lakhchaura et al. (2018). We consider relationships between stellar velocity dispersion and entropy profile slope, multiphase gas extent, and the ratio of cooling time to freefall time. We also define subsamples based on data quality and entropy profile properties that clarify those relationships and enable more specific test…
We investigate the cosmic evolution of the internal structure of massive early-type galaxies over half of the age of the Universe. We perform a joint lensing and stellar dynamics analysis of a sample of 81 strong lenses from the SL2S and SLACS surveys and combine the results with a hierarchical Bayesian inference method to measure the distribution of dark matter mass and stellar IMF across the population of massive early-type galaxies. Lensing selection effects are taken into account. We find that the dark matter mass projected within the inner 5 kpc increases for increasing redshift, decrease…
We present a sample of 54 disk galaxies which have well developed extraplanar structures. We selected them using visual inspections from the color images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Since the sizes of the extraplanar structures are comparable to the disks, they are considered as prominent stellar halos rather than large bulges. A single Sérsic profile fitted to the surface brightness along the minor-axis of the disk shows a luminosity excess in the central regions for the majority of sample galaxies. This central excess is considered to be caused by the central bulge component. The mean S…
We present an orbit-based method of combining stellar and cold gas kinematics to constrain the dark matter profile of early-type galaxies. We apply this method to early-type galaxy NGC 2974, using Pan-STARRS imaging and SAURON stellar kinematics to model the stellar orbits, and introducing HI kinematics from VLA observation as a tracer of the gravitational potential. The introduction of the cold gas kinematics shows a significant effect on the confidence limits of especially the dark halo properties: we exclude more than $95\%$ of models within the $1-σ$ confidence level of Schwarzschild model…
We investigate the stellar-mass Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) between the stellar mass and the integrated gas velocity dispersion, quantified by the kinematic estimator S_0.5 measured from strong emission lines in spectra of galaxies at 0<z<5. We combine luminosity-selected galaxies (`high-luminosity sample') with galaxies selected in other ways (`low-luminosity sample') to cover a range in stellar mass that spans almost five orders of magnitude: 7.0 < log M* < 11.5. We find that the logarithmic power-law slope and normalisation of the TFR are independent of redshift out to z~3. The scatter in t…
We show that for a wide range of stellar masses, from 0.3 to 20 Msun, and for evolutionary phases from the main sequence to the beginning of the red giant stage, the stellar flux weighted gravity, g_F ~ g/Teff^4, is tightly correlated with absolute bolometric magnitude Mbol. Such a correlation is predicted by stellar evolution theory. We confirm this relation observationally, using a sample of 445 stars with precise stellar parameters. It holds over 17 stellar magnitudes from Mbol = 9.0 mag to -8.0 mag with a scatter of 0.17 mag above Mbol = -3.0 and 0.29 mag below this value. We then test the…
The galaxy-wide stellar initial mass function (IGIMF) of a galaxy is thought to depend on its star formation rate (SFR). Using a catalogue of observational properties of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and a relation that correlates the formation timescales of ETGs with their stellar masses, the dependencies of the IGIMF on the SFR are translated into dependencies on more intuitive parameters like present-day luminosities in different passbands. It is found that up to a luminosity of approximately $10^9 \ {\rm L}_{\odot}$ (quite independent of the considered passband), the total masses of the stell…
We analyse structural decompositions of 500 late-type galaxies (Hubble $T$-type $\ge 6$) from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G), spanning a stellar mass range of about $10^7$ to a few times $10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Their decomposition parameters are compared with those of the early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster from Janz et al. They have morphological similarities, including the fact that the fraction of simple one-component galaxies in both samples increases towards lower galaxy masses. We find that in the late-type two-component galaxies both the inner and outer str…
We present new measurements of the evolution of the galaxy stellar mass functions (GSMF) and UV luminosity functions (UV LF) for galaxies from $z=6-9$ within the Frontier Field cluster MACSJ0416.1-2403 and its parallel field. To obtain these results, we derive the stellar masses of our sample by fitting synthetic stellar population models to their observed spectral energy distribution with the inclusion of nebular emission lines. This is the deepest and farthest in distance mass function measured to date and probes down to a level of M$_{*} = 10^{6.8}M_{\odot}$. The main result of this study i…
Galaxy starlight at 3.6$μ$m is an excellent tracer of stellar mass. Here we use the latest 3.6$μ$m imaging from the Spitzer Space Telescope to measure the total stellar mass and effective radii in a homogeneous way for a sample of galaxies from the SLUGGS survey. These galaxies are representative of nearby early-type galaxies in the stellar mass range of 10 $<$ log M$_{\ast}$/M$_{\odot}$ $<$ 11.7, and our methodology can be applied to other samples of early-type galaxies. We model each galaxy in 2D and estimate its total asymptotic magnitude from a 1D curve-of-growth. Magnitudes are converted …
Recent observations and modeling of globular clusters with multiple populations strongly indicate the presence of super helium-rich subpopulations in old stellar systems. Motivated by this, we have constructed new population synthesis models with and without helium-enhanced subpopulations to investigate their impact on the UV-upturn phenomenon of quiescent early-type galaxies. We find that our models with helium- enhanced subpopulations can naturally reproduce the strong UV-upturns observed in giant elliptical galaxies assuming an age similar to that of old globular clusters in the Milky Way. …
We have determined K-band luminosity functions for 13,325 local Universe galaxies as a function of morphology and color (for K_tot <= 10.75). Our sample is drawn from the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog, with all sample galaxies having measured morphologies and distances (including 4,219 archival redshift-independent distances). The luminosity function for our total sample is in good agreement with previous works, but is relatively smooth at faint magnitudes (due to bulk flow distance corrections). We investigated the differences due to morphological and color-selection using 5,417 sample galaxi…
We compile and carrefully homogenize local galaxy samples with available information on stellar, $\rm HI$ and/or $\rm H_{2}$ masses, and morphology. After processing the information on upper limits in the case of non gas detections, we determine the $\rm HI$- and $\rm H_{2}$-to-stellar mass relations and their $1σ$ scatter for both late- and early-type galaxies. The obtained relations are fitted to single or double power laws. Late-type galaxies are significantly gas richer than early-type ones, specially at high masses. The respective $\rm H_{2}$-to-$\rm HI$ mass ratios as a function of $M_{\…
We present a suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations at z>5 from the Feedback In Realistic Environments project, spanning a halo mass range M_halo~10^8-10^12 M_sun at z=5. We predict the stellar mass-halo mass relation, stellar mass function, and luminosity function in several bands from z=5-12. The median stellar mass-halo mass relation does not evolve strongly at z=5-12. The faint-end slope of the luminosity function steepens with increasing redshift, as inherited from the halo mass function at these redshifts. Below z~6, the stellar mass function and ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function s…
We describe the luminosity function, based on Sersic fits to the light profiles, of CMASS galaxies at z ~ 0.55. Compared to previous estimates, our Sersic-based reductions imply more luminous, massive galaxies, consistent with the effects of Sersic- rather than Petrosian or de Vaucouleur-based photometry on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample at z ~ 0.1. This implies a significant revision of the high mass end of the correlation between stellar and halo mass. Inferences about the evolution of the luminosity and stellar mass functions depend strongly on the assumed, and uncer…
Only a small fraction of local galaxies harbor an accreting black hole, classified as an active galactic nucleus (AGN). However, many stellar systems are plausibly expected to host black holes, from globular clusters to nuclear star clusters, to massive galaxies. The mere presence of stars in the vicinity of a black hole provides a source of fuel via mass loss of evolved stars. In this paper we assess the expected luminosities of black holes embedded in stellar systems of different sizes and properties, spanning a large range of masses. We model the distribution of stars and derive the amount …
We present measurements of the dependence of the clustering amplitude of galaxies on their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_*$) at $0.7 < z < 1.5$ to assess the extent to which environment affects these properties. While these relations are well determined in the local universe, they are much more poorly known at earlier times. For this analysis we make use of the near-IR HST WFC3 grism spectroscopic data in the five CANDELS fields obtained as part of the 3D-HST survey. We make projected 2-point correlation function measurements using $\sim$6,000 galaxies with accurate redshifts,…
We use high signal-to-noise spectroscopy for a sample of 232 quiescent galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster, to investigate how their stellar populations depend on velocity dispersion, luminosity and stellar mass. The sample spans a large range in velocity dispersion (sigma from 30-300 km/s) and in luminosity (M_R from -18.7 to -23.2). Estimates of age, total metallicity (Z/H) and alpha-element abundance ratio (a/Fe) were derived from absorption-line analysis, using single-burst models. Age, Z/H and a/Fe are all correlated positively with velocity dispersion, but we also find significant resid…
We employ the Delphi semi-analytical model to study the impact of black hole growth on high-redshift galaxies, both in terms of the observed UV luminosity and of the star formation rate. To do this, firstly, we assess the contribution of AGN to the total galaxy UV luminosity as a function of stellar mass and redshift. We find that for $M_{UV} < -24$ mag and $z \approx 5 - 6$ the galaxies for which the black hole UV luminosity outshines the stellar UV emission become the majority, and we estimate their duty cycle. Secondly, we study the evolution of the AGN and stellar luminosity functions (LFs…
We present a semi-analytical model of high redshift galaxy formation. In our model the star formation inside a galaxy is regulated by the feedback from supernova (SNe) driven outflows. We derive a closed analytical form for star formation rate in a single galaxy taking account of the SNe feedback in a self-consistent manner. We show that our model can explain the observed correlation between the stellar mass and the circular velocity of galaxies from dwarf galaxies to massive galaxies of $10^{12} M_\odot$. For small mass dwarf galaxies additional feedback other than supernova feedback is neede…
We introduce a prescription for the luminosity from accreting protostars into smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation, and apply the method to simulations of five primordial minihalos generated from cosmological initial conditions. We find that accretion luminosity delays fragmentation within the halos, but does not prevent it. In halos that slowly form a low number of protostars, the accretion luminosity can reduce the number of fragments that are formed before the protostars start ionising their surroundings. However, halos that rapidly form many protostars become dominated by dynamical p…
We present the study of the dependence of galaxy clustering on luminosity and stellar mass in the redshift range 2$<$z$<$3.5 using 3236 galaxies with robust spectroscopic redshifts from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). We measure the two-point real-space correlation function $w_p(r_p)$ for four volume-limited stellar mass and four luminosity, M$_{UV}$ absolute magnitude selected, sub-samples. We find that the scale dependent clustering amplitude $r_0$ significantly increases with increasing luminosity and stellar mass indicating a strong galaxy clustering dependence on these properties. Thi…
A model of protostar mass and luminosity evolution in clusters gives new estimates of cluster age, protostar birthrate, accretion rate and mean accretion time. The model assumes constant protostar birthrate, core-clump accretion, and equally likely accretion stopping. Its parameters are set to reproduce the initial mass function, and to match protostar luminosity distributions in nearby star-forming regions. It obtains cluster ages and birthrates from the observed numbers of protostars and pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, and from the modal value of the protostar luminosity. In 31 embedded clust…
I briefly review what has been recently learned from determinations of mean stellar ages and abundances from integrated light studies of early-type galaxies, and discuss some new questions posed by recent data. A short discussion of spectroscopic ages is presented, but the main focus of this review is on the abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, N, and C, obtained from comparisons of measurements taken in integrated spectra of galaxies with predictions from stellar population synthesis models.
The last two years have seen widespread acceptance of the idea that the Milky Way halo was largely created in an early (8-10 Gyr ago) and massive ($> 10^{10} M_\odot$) merger. The roots of this idea pre-date the Gaia mission, but the exquisite proper motions available from Gaia have made the hypothesis irresistible. We trace the history of this idea, reviewing the series of papers that led to our current understanding.
A pioneering study showed that the fine structure in the luminosity function (LF) of young star clusters contains information about the evolutionary stage (age) and composition of the stellar population. The notable features include the H-peak, which is the result of the onset of hydrogen burning turning pre-main sequence stars into main sequence stars. The feature moves toward the faint end of the LF, and eventually disappears as the population evolves. Another detectable feature is the Wielen dip, a dip at M_V ~ 7 mag in the LF first identified in 1974 for stars in the solar environment. Lat…
We examine how the total X-ray luminosity correlates with stellar mass, stellar population, and redshift for a K-band limited sample of ~3500 galaxies at 0.5<z<2.0 from the NEWFIRM Medium Band Survey in the COSMOS field. The galaxy sample is divided into 32 different galaxy types, based on similarities between the spectral energy distributions. For each galaxy type, we further divide the sample into bins of redshift and stellar mass, and perform an X-ray stacking analysis using the Chandra COSMOS (C-COSMOS) data. We find that full band X-ray luminosity is primarily increasing with stellar mass…
We present SPH cosmological simulations of the formation of three disk galaxies with a detailed treatment of chemical evolution and cooling. The resulting galaxies have properties compatible with observations: relatively high disk-to-total ratios, thin stellar disks and good agreement with the Tully-Fisher and the luminosity-size relations. They present a break in the luminosity profile at 3.0 +- 0.5 disk scale lengths, while showing an exponential mass profile without any apparent breaks, in line with recent observational results. Since the stellar mass profile is exponential, only difference…
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) of early-type galaxies is the combination of the IMF of the stellar population formed in-situ and that of accreted stellar populations. Using as an observable the effective IMF $α_{IMF}$, defined as the ratio between the true stellar mass of a galaxy and the stellar mass inferred assuming a Salpeter IMF, we present a theoretical model for its evolution as a result of dry mergers. We use a simple dry merger evolution model, based on cosmological $N$-body simulations, together with empirically motivated prescriptions for the IMF to make predictions for how…
We present a survey for water maser emission toward a sample of 44 low-luminosity young objects, comprising (proto-)brown dwarfs, first hydrostatic cores (FHCs), and other young stellar objects (YSOs) with bolometric luminosities lower than 0.4 L$_\odot$. Water maser emission is a good tracer of energetic processes, such as mass-loss and/or accretion, and is a useful tool to study this processes with very high angular resolution. This type of emission has been confirmed in objects with L$_{\rm bol}\ge 1$ L$_\odot$. Objects with lower luminosities also undergo mass-loss and accretion, and thus,…
We study the origin of the scaling relations of early-type galaxies (ETGs) by constructing detailed models of the stellar dynamics for the K-band selected, volume-limited ATLAS3D sample of 263 nearby ETGs, spanning a large range of masses and stellar velocity dispersions (60 < sigma < 350 km/s).
Here we utilise recent measures of galaxy total dynamical mass and X-ray gas luminosities (L$_{X,Gas}$) for a sample of 29 massive early-type galaxies from the SLUGGS survey to probe L$_{X,Gas}$--mass scaling relations. In particular, we investigate scalings with stellar mass, dynamical mass within 5 effective radii (R$_e$) and total virial mass. We also compare these relations with predictions from $Λ$CDM simulations. We find a strong linear relationship between L$_{X,Gas}$ and galaxy dynamical mass within 5 R$_e$, which is consistent with the recent cosmological simulations of Choi et al. th…
