The singular values squared of the random matrix product $Y = G_r G_{r-1} \cdots G_1 (G_0 + A)$, where each $G_j$ is a rectangular standard complex Gaussian matrix while $A$ is non-random, are shown to be a determinantal point process with correlation kernel given by a double contour integral. When all but finitely many eigenvalues of $A^*A$ are equal to $bN$, the kernel is shown to admit a well-defined hard edge scaling, in which case a critical value is established and a phase transition phenomenon is observed. More specifically, the limiting kernel in the subcritical regime of $0<b<1$ is independent of $b$, and is in fact the same as that known for the case $b=0$ due to Kuijlaars and Zhang. The critical regime of $b=1$ allows for a double scaling limit by choosing $b = (1-τ/\sqrt{N})^{-1}$, and for this the critical kernel and outlier phenomenon are established. In the simplest case $r=0$, which is closely related to non-intersecting squared Bessel paths, a distribution corresponding to the finite shifted mean LUE is proven to be the scaling limit in the supercritical regime of $b>1$ with two distinct scaling rates. Similar results also hold true for the random matrix product $T_r T_{r-1} \cdots T_1 (G_0 + A)$, with each $T_j$ being a truncated unitary matrix.
Recently, the joint probability density functions of complex eigenvalues for products of independent complex Ginibre matrices have been explicitly derived as determinantal point processes. We express truncated series coming from the correlation kernels as multivariate integrals with singularity and investigate saddle point method for such a type of integrals. As an application, we prove that the eigenvalue correlation functions have the same scaling limits as those of the single complex Ginibre ensemble, both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. We also prove that the similar results h…
It has been shown by Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg that the squared singular values of products of $M$ rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that admits a representation in terms of Meijer G-functions. We prove the universality of the local statistics of the squared singular values, namely, the bulk universality given by the sine kernel and the edge universality given by the Airy kernel. The proof is based on the asymptotic analysis for the double contour integral representation of…
Formulae of Plancherel-Rotach type are established for the average characteristic polynomials of certain Hermitian products of rectangular Ginibre random matrices on the region of zeros. These polynomials form a general class of multiple orthogonal hypergeometric polynomials generalizing the classical Laguerre polynomials. The proofs are based on a multivariate version of the complex method of saddle points. After suitable rescaling the asymptotic zero distributions for the polynomials are studied and shown to coincide with the Fuss-Catalan distributions. Moreover, introducing appropriate coor…
We derive a precise asymptotic formula for the density of the small singular values of the real Ginibre matrix ensemble shifted by a complex parameter $z$ as the dimension tends to infinity. For $z$ away from the real axis the formula coincides with that for the complex Ginibre ensemble we derived earlier in [arXiv:1908.01653]. On the level of the one-point function of the low lying singular values we thus confirm the transition from real to complex Ginibre ensembles as the shift parameter $z$ becomes genuinely complex; the analogous phenomenon has been well known for eigenvalues. We use the s…
In this note, we show that the Lyapunov exponents of mixed products of random truncated Haar unitary and complex Ginibre matrices are asymptotically given by equally spaced `picket-fence' statistics. We discuss how these statistics should originate from the connection between random matrix products and multiplicative Brownian motion on $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, analogous to the connection between discrete random walks and ordinary Brownian motion. Our methods are based on contour integral formulas for products of classical matrix ensembles from integrable probability.
We study the least singular value of the $n\times n$ matrix $H-z$ with $H=A_0+H_0$, where $H_0$ is drawn from the complex Ginibre ensemble of matrices with iid Gaussian entries, and $A_0$ is some general $n\times n$ matrix with complex entries (it can be random and in this case it is independent of $H_0$). Assuming some rather general assumptions on $A_0$, we prove an optimal tail estimate on the least singular value in the regime where $z$ is around the spectral edge of $H$ thus generalize the recent result of Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder arxiv:1908.01653 to the case $A_0\ne 0$. The result impr…
We consider the least singular value of a large random matrix with real or complex i.i.d. Gaussian entries shifted by a constant $z\in\mathbb{C}$. We prove an optimal lower tail estimate on this singular value in the critical regime where $z$ is around the spectral edge thus improving the classical bound of [Sankar, Spielman, Teng, 2006] in the edge regime. Lacking Brézin-Hikami formulas in the real case, we rely on the superbosonization formula [Littelmann, Sommers, Zirnbauer, 2008].
Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg recently showed that the squared singular values of products of M rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that can be expressed in terms of Meijer G-functions. We show that this point process can be interpreted as a multiple orthogonal polynomial ensemble. We give integral representations for the relevant multiple orthogonal polynomials and a new double contour integral for the correlation kernel, which allows us to find its scaling limits at the origin …
The complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble with coupling $τ$ is a complex Gaussian matrix interpolating between the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and the Ginibre ensemble. It has been known for some time that its eigenvalues form a determinantal point process in the complex plane. A recent result of Kanazawa and Kieburg (arXiv:1804.03985) shows that the singular values form a Pfaffian point process. In this paper we turn to consider an extended elliptic Ginibre ensemble, which connects the GUE and the spiked Wishart matrix, and prove that the singular values still build a Pfaffian point process w…
We consider products of independent random matrices taken from the induced Ginibre ensemble with complex or quaternion elements. The joint densities for the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix can be written down exactly for a product of any fixed number of matrices and any finite matrix size. We show that the squared absolute values of the eigenvalues form a permanental process, generalising the results of Kostlan and Rider for single matrices to products of complex and quaternionic matrices. Based on these findings, we can first write down exact results and asymptotic expansions for th…
In this paper we study the limiting distribution of the $k$ smallest gaps between eigenvalues of three kinds of random matrices -- the Ginibre ensemble, the Wishart ensemble and the universal unitary ensemble. All of them follow a Poissonian ansatz. More precisely, for the Ginibre ensemble we have a global result in which the $k$-th smallest gap has typical length $n^{-3/4}$ with density $x^{4k-1}e^{-x^4}$ after normalization. For the Wishart and the universal unitary ensemble, it has typical length $n^{-4/3}$ and has density $x^{3k-1}e^{-x^3}$ after normalization.
We study the overlaps between eigenvectors of nonnormal matrices. They quantify the stability of the spectrum, and characterize the joint eigenvalues increments under Dyson-type dynamics. Well known work by Chalker and Mehlig calculated the expectation of these overlaps for complex Ginibre matrices. For the same model, we extend their results by deriving the distribution of diagonal overlaps (the condition numbers), and their correlations. We prove: (i) convergence of condition numbers for bulk eigenvalues to an inverse Gamma distribution; more generally, we decompose the quenched overlap (i.e…
We consider the mixed-moments $φ(\mathbf{X}^{ε_1},\ldots,\mathbf{X}^{ε_k})=\lim_{N\to\infty}N^{-1}\mathbb{E}\left[\mathrm{Tr}\left(\mathbf{X}^ε_1\cdots\mathbf{X}^{ε_k}\right)\right]$ of complex Gaussian Elliptic Matrices $\mathbf{X}$ (with correlation parameter $ρ$ between elements $\mathbf{X}_{ij}$ and $\mathbf{X}_{ji}^*$), where symbolically $ε_i\in\{1,\dagger\}$, and where the expectation $\mathbb{E}\left[\cdot\right]$ is taken over all matrices $\mathbf{X}$. We start by finding an explicit formula for $φ(\mathbf{X}^n,(\mathbf{X}^\dagger)^m)$, $n,m\in\mathbb{N}$, by using a mapping between …
In this paper, we study the product of two complex Ginibre matrices and the loop equations satisfied by their resolvents (i.e. the Stieltjes transform of the correlation functions). We obtain using Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) techniques the general loop equations satisfied by the resolvents. In order to deal with the product structure of the random matrix of interest, we consider SDEs involving the integral of higher derivatives. One of the advantage of this technique is that it bypasses the reformulation of the problem in terms of singular values. As a byproduct of this study we obtain the…
We consider the squared singular values of the product of $M$ standard complex Gaussian matrices. Since the squared singular values form a determinantal point process with a particular Meijer G-function kernel, the gap probabilities are given by a Fredholm determinant based on this kernel. It was shown by Strahov \cite{St14} that a hard edge scaling limit of the gap probabilities is described by Hamiltonian differential equations which can be formulated as an isomonodromic deformation system similar to the theory of the Kyoto school. We generalize this result to the case of finite matrices by …
Akemann, Ipsen, and Kieburg showed recently that the squared singular values of a product of M complex Ginibre matrices are distributed according to a determinantal point process. We introduce the notion of a polynomial ensemble and show how their result can be interpreted as a transformation of polynomial ensembles. We also show that the squared singular values of the product of M-1 complex Ginibre matrices with one truncated unitary matrix is a polynomial ensemble, and we derive a double integral representation for the correlation kernel associated with this ensemble. We use this to calculat…
We prove that, for general test functions, the limiting behavior of the linear statistic of an independent entry random matrix is determined only by the first four moments of the entry distributions. This immediately generalizes the known central limit theorem for independent entry matrices with complex normal entries. We also establish two central limit theorems for matrices with real normal entries, considering separately functions supported exclusively on and exclusively away from the real line. In contrast to previously obtained results in this area, we do not impose analyticity on test fu…
We derive an accurate lower tail estimate on the lowest singular value $σ_1(X-z)$ of a real Gaussian (Ginibre) random matrix $X$ shifted by a complex parameter $z$. Such shift effectively changes the upper tail behaviour of the condition number $κ(X-z)$ from the slower $\mathbf{P}(κ(X-z)\ge t)\lesssim 1/t$ decay typical for real Ginibre matrices to the faster $1/t^2$ decay seen for complex Ginibre matrices as long as $z$ is away from the real axis. This sharpens and resolves a recent conjecture in [arXiv:2005.08930] on the regularizing effect of the real Ginibre ensemble with a genuinely compl…
We establish a few properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the quaternionic Ginibre ensemble (QGE), analogous to what is known in the complex Ginibre case. We first recover a version of Kostlan's theorem that was already noticed by Rider: the set of the squared radii of the eigenvalues is distributed as a set of independent gamma variables. Our proof technique uses the De Bruijn identity and properties of Pfaffians; it also allows to prove that the high powers of these eigenvalues are independent. These results extend to any potential beyond the Gaussian case, as long as radial symmetry …
For a fixed quadratic polynomial $\mathfrak{p}$ in $n$ non-commuting variables, and $n$ independent $N\times N$ complex Ginibre matrices $X_1^N,\dots, X_n^N$, we establish the convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of $P^N =\mathfrak{p}(X_1^N,\dots, X_n^N)$ to the Brown measure of $\mathfrak{p}$ evaluated at $n$ freely independent circular elements $c_1,\dots, c_n$ in a non-commutative probability space. The main step of the proof is to obtain quantitative control on the pseudospectrum of $P^N$. Via the well-known linearization trick this hinges on anti-concentration properties for…
We prove the universal asymptotically almost sure non-singularity of general Ginibre and Wigner ensembles of random matrices when the distribution of the entries are independent but not necessarily identically distributed and may depend on the size of the matrix. These models include adjacency matrices of random graphs and also sparse, generalized, universal and banded random matrices. We find universal rates of convergence and precise estimates for the probability of singularity which depend only on the size of the biggest jump of the distribution functions governing the entries of the matrix…
Very recently we have shown that the spherical transform is a convenient tool for studying the relation between the joint density of the singular values and that of the eigenvalues for bi-unitarily invariant random matrices. In the present work we discuss the implications of these results for products of random matrices. In particular, we derive a transformation formula for the joint densities of a product of two independent bi-unitarily invariant random matrices, the first from a polynomial ensemble and the second from a polynomial ensemble of derivative type. This allows us to re-derive and …
We suggest a method of studying the joint probability density (JPD) of an eigenvalue and the associated 'non-orthogonality overlap factor' (also known as the 'eigenvalue condition number') of the left and right eigenvectors for non-selfadjoint Gaussian random matrices of size $N\times N$. First we derive the general finite $N$ expression for the JPD of a real eigenvalue $λ$ and the associated non-orthogonality factor in the real Ginibre ensemble, and then analyze its 'bulk' and 'edge' scaling limits. The ensuing distribution is maximally heavy-tailed, so that all integer moments beyond normali…
We consider non-Gaussian extensions of the elliptic Ginibre ensemble of complex non-Hermitian random matrices by fixing the trace $\operatorname{Tr}(XX^*)$ of the matrix $X$ with a hard or soft constraint. These ensembles have correlated matrix entries and non-determinantal joint densities of the complex eigenvalues. We study global and local bulk statistics in these ensembles, in particular in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity introduced by Fyodorov, Khoruzhenko and Sommers. Here, the support of the limiting measure collapses to the real line. This limit was motivated by physics applications …
The real Ginibre ensemble refers to the family of $n\times n$ matrices in which each entry is an independent Gaussian random variable of mean zero and variance one. Our main result is that the appropriately scaled spectral radius converges in law to a Gumbel distribution as $n\rightarrow\infty$. This fact has been known to hold in the complex and quaternion analogues of the ensemble for some time, with simpler proofs. Along the way we establish a new form for the limit law of the largest real eigenvalue.
We consider words $G_{i_1} \cdots G_{i_m}$ involving i.i.d. complex Ginibre matrices, and study tracial expressions of their eigenvalues and singular values. We show that the limit distribution of the squared singular values of every word of length $m$ is a Fuss-Catalan distribution with parameter $m+1$. This generalizes previous results concerning powers of a complex Ginibre matrix, and products of independent Ginibre matrices. In addition, we find other combinatorial parameters of the word that determine the second-order limits of the spectral statistics. For instance, the so-called coperiod…
Products of $M$ i.i.d. non-Hermitian random matrices of size $N \times N$ relate Gaussian fluctuation of Lyapunov and stability exponents in dynamical systems (finite $N$ and large $M$) to local eigenvalue universality in random matrix theory (finite $M$ and large $N$). The remaining task is to study local eigenvalue statistics as $M$ and $N$ tend to infinity simultaneously, which lies at the heart of understanding two kinds of universal patterns. For products of i.i.d. complex Ginibre matrices, truncated unitary matrices and spherical ensembles, as $M+N\to \infty$ we prove that local statisti…
Non-Hermitian random matrices enjoy non-trivial correlations in the statistics of their eigenvectors. We study the overlap among left and right eigenvectors in Ginibre ensembles with quaternion valued Gaussian matrix elements. This concept was introduced by Chalker and Mehlig in the complex Ginibre ensemble. Using a Schur decomposition, for harmonic potentials we can express the overlap in terms of complex eigenvalues only, coming in conjugate pairs in this symmetry class. Its expectation value leads to a Pfaffian determinant, for which we explicitly compute the matrix elements for the induced…
We solve infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equations (ISDEs) describing an infinite number of Brownian particles interacting via two-dimensional Coulomb potentials. The equilibrium states of the associated unlabeled stochastic dynamics are the Ginibre random point field and Dyson's measures, which appear in random matrix theory. To solve the ISDEs we establish an integration by parts formula for these measures. Because the long-range effect of two-dimensional Coulomb potentials is quite strong, the properties of Brownian particles interacting with two-dimensional Coulomb potentials …
The elliptic Ginibre ensemble of complex non-Hermitian random matrices allows to interpolate between the rotational invariant Ginibre ensemble and the Gaussian unitary ensemble of Hermitian random matrices. It corresponds to a two-dimensional one-component Coulomb gas in a quadrupolar field, at inverse temperature $β=2$. Furthermore, it represents a determinantal point process in the complex plane with corresponding kernel of planar Hermite polynomials. Our main tool is a saddle point analysis of a single contour integral representation of this kernel. We provide a unifying approach to rigorou…
Let $X$ be a random matrix whose squared singular value density is a polynomial ensemble. We derive double contour integral formulas for the correlation kernels of the squared singular values of $GX$ and $TX$, where $G$ is a complex Ginibre matrix and $T$ is a truncated unitary matrix. We also consider the product of $X$ and several complex Ginibre/truncated unitary matrices. As an application, we derive the precise condition for the squared singular values of the product of several truncated unitary matrices to follow a polynomial ensemble. We also consider the sum $H + M$ where $H$ is a GUE …
We consider the eigenvalues of symplectic elliptic Ginibre matrices which are known to form a Pfaffian point process whose correlation kernel can be expressed in terms of the skew-orthogonal Hermite polynomials. We derive the scaling limits and the convergence rates of the correlation functions at the real bulk/edge of the spectrum, which in particular establishes the local universality at strong non-Hermiticity. Furthermore, we obtain the subleading corrections of the edge correlation kernels, which depend on the non-Hermiticity parameter contrary to the universal leading term. Our proofs are…
We consider the symplectic induced Ginibre process, which is a Pfaffian point process on the plane. Let $N$ be the number of points. We focus on the almost-circular regime where most of the points lie in a thin annulus $\mathcal{S}_{N}$ of width $O(\frac{1}{N})$ as $N \to \infty$. Our main results are the scaling limits of all correlation functions near the real axis, and also away from the real axis. Near the real axis, the limiting correlation functions are Pfaffians with a new correlation kernel, which interpolates the limiting kernels in the bulk of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble and of t…
In this article we study the large $N$ asymptotics of complex moments of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a $N\times N$ complex Ginibre random matrix with the characteristic polynomial evaluated at a point in the unit disk. More precisely, we calculate the large $N$ asymptotics of $\mathbb{E}|\det(G_N-z)|^γ$, where $G_N$ is a $N\times N$ matrix whose entries are i.i.d and distributed as $N^{-1/2}Z$, $Z$ being a standard complex Gaussian, $\mathrm{Re}(γ)>-2$, and $|z|<1$. This expectation is proportional to the determinant of a complex moment matrix with a symbol which is …
Let $σ_n(\cdot)$ denote the least singular value of a $n \times n$ matrix. It is well-known that $\mathbb{P}[σ_n(A) \le \varepsilon] \le \varepsilon n$ if $A$ is drawn from the real Ginibre ensemble of $n \times n$ matrices and $\mathbb{P}[σ_n(A) \le \varepsilon] \le \varepsilon^2 n^2$ if $A$ is drawn from the complex Ginibre ensemble. In this paper, we will show a similar phenomenon occurs for sparse random matrices.
The Ginibre unitary ensemble (GinUE) consists of $N \times N$ random matrices with independent complex standard Gaussian entries. This was introduced in 1965 by Ginbre, who showed that the eigenvalues form a determinantal point process with an explicit correlation kernel, and after scaling they are supported on the unit disk with constant density. For some time now it has been appreciated that GinUE has a fundamental place within random matrix theory, both for its applications and for the richness of its theory. Here we review the progress on a number of themes relating to the study of GinUE. …
We analyze the numerical range of high-dimensional random matrices, obtaining limit results and corresponding quantitative estimates in the non-limit case. For a large class of random matrices their numerical range is shown to converge to a disc. In particular, numerical range of complex Ginibre matrix almost surely converges to the disk of radius $\sqrt{2}$. Since the spectrum of non-hermitian random matrices from the Ginibre ensemble lives asymptotically in a neighborhood of the unit disk, it follows that the outer belt of width $\sqrt{2}-1$ containing no eigenvalues can be seen as a quantif…
This is part II of a review relating to the three classes of random non-Hermitian Gaussian matrices introduced by Ginibre in 1965. While part I restricted attention to the GinUE (Ginibre unitary ensemble) case of complex elements, in this part the cases of real elements (GinOE, denoting Ginibre orthogonal ensemble) and quaternion elements represented as $2 \times 2$ complex blocks (GinSE, denoting Ginibre symplectic ensemble) are considered. The eigenvalues of both GinOE and GinSE form Pfaffian point processes, which are more complicated than the determinantal point processes resulting from Gi…
We consider the eigenvalues of non-Hermitian random matrices in the symmetry class of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble, which are known to form a Pfaffian point process in the plane. It was recently discovered that the limiting correlation kernel of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble in the vicinity of the real line can be expressed in a unified form of a Wronskian. We derive scaling limits for variations of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble and obtain such Wronskian structures for the associated universality classes. These include almost-Hermitian bulk/edge scaling limits of the elliptic symplectic…
We continue the study of joint statistics of eigenvectors and eigenvalues initiated in the seminal papers of Chalker and Mehlig. The principal object of our investigation is the expectation of the matrix of overlaps between the left and the right eigenvectors for the complex $N\times N$ Ginibre ensemble, conditional on an arbitrary number $k=1,2,\ldots$ of complex eigenvalues. These objects provide the simplest generalisation of the expectations of the diagonal overlap ($k=1$) and the off-diagonal overlap ($k=2$) considered originally by Chalker and Mehlig. They also appear naturally in the pro…
