Deeply sub-wavelength two-dimensional films may exhibit extraordinarily strong nonlinear effects. Here we show that 2D films exhibit the remarkable property of a phase-controllable nonlinearity, i.e., the amplitude of the nonlinear polarisation wave in the medium can be controlled via the pump beam phase and determines whether a probe beam will "feel" or not the nonlinearity. This is in stark contrast to bulk nonlinearites where propagation in the medium averages out any such phase dependence. We perform a series of experiments in graphene that highlight some of the consequences of the optical nonlinearity phase-dependence, {such as} the coherent control of nonlinearly diffracted beams, single-pump-beam {induced} phase-conjugation and the demonstration of a nonlinear mirror characterised by negative reflection. The observed phase sensitivity is not specific to graphene but rather is solely a result of the dimensionality and is therefore expected in all 2D materials.
Semi-analytic single-channel and cross-channel nonlinear interference spectra in highly-dispersed WDM coherent optical links with rectangular signal spectra
Using ultrafast photonic first-order differentiator applied on a partially coherent field, we report the generation of two correlated temporal waveforms and study their correlation properties upon linear and nonlinear propagation along the two orthogonal polarization axis of a dispersive optical fiber. Temporal correlations are maintained in linear propagation whereas Kerr nonlinearity generates anti-correlated temporal intensity patterns for both partially and uncorrelated fields. Experiments are in close agreement with the theoretical analysis.
We propose a tunable coherent perfect absorber based on ultrathin nonlinear metasurfaces. The nonlinear metasurface is made of plasmonic nanoantennas coupled to an epsilon-near-zero material with a large optical nonlinearity. The coherent perfect absorption is achieved by controlling the relative phases of the input beams. We show that the optical response of the nonlinear metasurface can be tuned from a complete to a partial absorption by changing the intensity of the pump beam. The proposed nonlinear metasurface can be used to design optically tunable thermal emitters, modulators, and sensor…
We experimentally demonstrate coherent control of the nonlinear response of optical second harmonic generation in resonant nanostructures beyond the weak-field regime. Contrary to common perception, we show that maximizing the intensity of the pulse does not yield the strongest nonlinear power-law response. We show this effect emerges from the temporally asymmetric photo-induced response in a resonant mediated non-instantaneous interaction. We develop a novel theoretical approach which captures the photoinduced nonlinearities in resonant nanostructures beyond the two photon description and giv…
We report on an investigation of simultaneous generation of several narrow-bandwidth laser-like coherent emissions from nitrogen molecular ions ( ) produced in intense mid-infrared laser fields. With systematic examinations on the dependences of coherent emissions on gas pressure as well as several laser parameters including laser intensity, polarization and wavelength of the pump laser pulses, we reveal that the multiple coherent emission lines generated in originate from a series of nonlinear processes beginning with four-wave mixing, followed with stimulated Raman scattering. Our analyses f…
The intrachannel interaction of pulses in weakly nonlinear coherent optical fiber lines is theoretically investigated. It is shown that the main contribution to the perturbation of the optical field comes from resonant interactions of ordered triplets of pulses. The structure of triplets is determined. The weight contributions of such interactions are calculated. A classification of interactions using Loeschian numbers is proposed. Using computer simulation, the dependence of the average energy of the optical field perturbations on the distance is shown. Based on the performed analysis, an eff…
We propose a novel scheme to generate single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses via reflection of an optical femtosecond pulse train from a thin layer of nonlinear resonant medium. Our method is based on a coherent control of low-frequency oscillations and free induction decay in the medium. The specific single-cycle shape of generated THz pulses requires a plane wavefront and detection in the near field. Our theoretical results pave the way to a new, simple and high-efficiency way to generate single-cycle waveshape-tunable terahertz pulses.

A theory of nonlinear signal propagation in multi-span wavelength division multiplexed coherent transmission systems that employ the semiconductor optical amplifier as in-line amplifiers is presented for the first time. The rigorous derivation, based on time-domain first-order perturbation theory, is developed in detail. The end result is the expressions for the signal-to-noise ratio of the received sampled photocurrent, including contributions from noise, fiber-induced nonlinear distortions, and amplified-induced nonlinear distortions.
We demonstrate a way to coherently control light at the nanoscale and achieve coherent perfect absorption (CPA) by using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The presented waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, combined with strong and homogeneous field enhancement along their nanochannels. The CPA conditions are perfectly satisfied at the ENZ frequency, surprisingly by a subwavelength plasmonic structure, resulting in strong CPA under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with appropriate amplitudes and phases. In addition , we inve…
We propose a scheme to realize nonlinear coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at the nanoscale using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) plasmonic waveguides. The general conditions to achieve CPA in a linear ENZ plasmonic waveguide are analyzed and presented. The proposed ENZ waveguides support an effective ENZ response at their cut-off frequency, where the CPA effect occurs under the illumination of two counter-propagating plane waves with equal amplitudes and appropriate phase distributions. In addition, the strong and uniform field enhancement inside the nanochannels of the waveguides at the ENZ resonanc…
The random laser action with coherent feedback by second-harmonic generation (SHG) was experimentally demonstrated in this paper. Compared with the conventional random laser action based on photoluminescence effect, which needs strong photoresponse in the active medium and has a fixed response waveband due to the inherent energy level structure of the material, this random SHG laser action indicates a possible confinement of the nonlinear signal with ring cavities and widens the response waveband due to the flexible frequency conversion in nonlinear process. The combination of coherent random …
All existing heat machines are dissipative open systems. Hence, they cannot operate fully coherently. We propose to replace this conventional thermodynamic paradigm by a completely different one, whereby heat machines are nonlinear coherent closed systems comprised of few field modes. Their thermal-state input is transformed by nonlinear interactions into non-thermal output with controlled quantum fluctuations and the capacity to deliver work in a chosen mode. This new paradigm allows the bridging of quantum coherent and thermodynamic descriptions.
Nonlinear optical microscopy allows rapid high-resolution microscopy with image contrast generated from intrinsic properties of the sample. Established modalities such as multiphoton excited fluorescence and second/third-harmonic generation can be combined with other nonlinear techniques, such as coherent Raman spectroscopy which typically allow chemical imaging of a single resonant vibrational mode of a sample. Here, we utilize a single ultrafast laser source to obtain broadband coherent Raman spectra on a microscope, together with other nonlinear microscopy approaches on the same instrument.…
In this paper, we examine the modification of specific nonclassical properties of the nonlinear coherent state on sphere upon perpendicular propagation through an absorptive and dispersive dielectric slab at finite temperature. For this purpose, by describing the dielectric dispersion of the slab by Lorentz model, the quadrature squeezing and the Mandel parameter are evaluated for the transmitted state. A generalization of single-mode nonlinear coherent state to the continuum-mode is considered. The degree of second-order coherence is instead calculated for a continuum nonlinear coherent state…
The pioneering experiments of linear spectroscopy were performed using flames in the 1800s, but nonlinear optical measurements had to wait until lasers became available in the twentieth century. Because the nonlinear cross section of materials is very small, usually macroscopic bulk samples and pulsed lasers are used. Numerous efforts have explored coherent nonlinear signal generation from individual nanoparticles or small atomic ensembles with millions of atoms. Experiments on a single semiconductor quantum dot have also been reported, albeit with a very small yield. Here, we report on cohere…
A localized non-Hermitian potential can operate as a coherent perfect absorber or as a laser for nonlinear waves. The effect is illustrated for an array of optical waveguides, with the central waveguide being either active or absorbing. The arrays situated to the left and to the right from the center can have different characteristics. The result is generalized to setups with the central waveguide carrying additional nonlinear dissipation or gain and to the two-dimensional arrays with embedded one-dimensional absorbing or lasing sub-arrays.
The nonlinear Shannon capacity limit has been identified as the fundamental barrier to the maximum rate of transmitted information in optical communications. In long-haul high-bandwidth optical networks, this limit is mainly attributed to deterministic Kerr-induced fiber nonlinearities and from the interaction of amplified spontaneous emission noise from cascaded optical amplifiers with fiber nonlinearity: the stochastic parametric noise amplification. Unlike earlier impractical approaches that compensate solely deterministic nonlinearities, here we demonstrate a novel electronic-based deep ne…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a nonlinear-optics approach to pattern recognition with single-pixel imaging and deep neural network. It employs mode selective image up-conversion to project a raw image onto a set of coherent spatial modes, whereby its signature features are extracted nonlinear-optically. With 40 projection modes, the classification accuracy reaches a high value of 99.49% for the MNIST handwritten digit images, and up to 95.32% even when they are mixed with strong noise. Our experiment harnesses rich coherent processes in nonlinear optics for efficient machine learni…
We present an asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurface to realize tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The proposed design is composed of two dissimilar graphene square patch metasurfaces stacked over an ultrathin dielectric substrate. Nonlinear CPA performance without resorting to optical nonlinearities and amplification are demonstrated based on wave interference phenomena taking place along and inside this subwavelength structure. Broadband asymmetric reflection from opposite directions is obtained in the case of single wave illumination. T…
We consider linear and nonlinear coherent perfect absorbers (CPAs) in multidimensional geometries and construct explicitly the respective perfectly absorbed solutions. The multidimensional CPAs have a structure of the so-called simple layers which represent the generalization of the point $δ$ function potential to higher dimensions. The considered examples include broadband CPAs confined to a straight line (in a two-dimensional setting) and to a plane (in the three-dimensional space); CPAs for topological vortices on an absorbing circle; as well as axially-symmetric CPAs on a sphere. Additiona…
Laser-launched evanescent surface plasmon polariton field utilized as a direct coherent pumping source to generate emitted nonlinear four-wave mixing radiation
We report the first coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrational modes via the nonlinear interaction of a TeraHertz (THz) light field with molecular liquids. A terahertz-terahertz-Raman pulse sequence prepares the coherences with a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond terahertz pulse, that are then measured in a terahertz Kerr effect spectrometer via phase-sensitive, heterodyne detection with an optical pulse. The spectrometer reported here has broader terahertz frequency coverage, and an increased sensitivity relative to previously reported terahertz Kerr effect experiments. Vibration…
We suggest graphene and a two-dimensional (2D) Weyl semimetal (WSM) as 2D materials for the realization of a broadband coherent perfect absorber (CPA) respecting overall PT-symmetry. We also demonstrate the conditions for mutually equal amplitudes and phases of the left and right incoming waves to realize a CPA. 2D materials in our system play the role to enhance the absorption rate of a CPA once the appropriate parameters are inserted in the system. We show that a 2D WSM is more effective than graphene in obtaining the optimal conditions. We display the behavior of each parameter governing th…
