We present new 0.9-2.45 $μ$m spectroscopy ($R \sim 1000$), and $Y$, $J$, $H$, $K_s$, $L^\prime$ photometry, obtained at Gemini North, of three low-mass brown dwarf companions on wide orbits around young stars of the Upper Scorpius OB association: HIP 78530 B, [PGZ2001] J161031.9-191305 B, and GSC 06214-00210 B. We use these data to assess the companions' spectral type, temperature, surface gravity and mass, as well as the ability of the BT-Settl and Drift-Phoenix atmosphere models to reproduce the spectral features of young substellar objects. For completeness, we also analyze the archival spectroscopy and photometry of the Upper Scorpius planetary mass companion 1RXS J160929.1-210524 b. Based on a comparison with model spectra we find that the companions, in the above order, have effective temperatures of 2700, 2500, 2300 and 1700 K. These temperatures are consistent with our inferred spectral types, respectively M7 $β$, M9 $γ$, M9 $γ$, and L4 $γ$. From bolometric luminosities estimated from atmosphere model spectra adjusted to our photometry, and using evolution models at 5-10 Myr, we estimate masses of 21-25, 28-70, 14-17 and 7-12 $M_{\rm Jup}$, respectively. J1610-1913 B appears significantly over-luminous for its inferred temperature, which explains its higher mass estimate. Synthetic spectra based on the BT-Settl and Drift-Phoenix atmosphere models generally offer a good fit to our observed spectra, although our analysis has highlighted a few problems. For example, the best fits in the individual near-infrared bands occur at different model temperatures. Also, temperature estimates based on a comparison of the broadband magnitudes and colors of the companions to synthetic magnitudes from the models are systematically lower than the temperature estimates based on a comparison with synthetic spectra.
We aim at constraining evolutionary models at low mass and young ages by identifying interesting transiting system members of the nearest OB association to the Sun, Upper Scorpius, targeted by the Kepler mission. We produced light curves for M dwarf members of the USco region surveyed during the second campaign of the Kepler K2 mission. We identified 'by eye' a transiting system, UScoJ161630.68-251220.1 (=EPIC203710387) with a combined spectral type of M5.25 whose photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic properties makes it a member of USco. We conducted an extensive photometric and spectro…
We have combined optical and NIR photometry from Pan-STARRS 1 and UKIDSS to search the young (5-10 Myr) star-forming region of Upper Scorpius for wide (~400-4000 AU) substellar companions down to ~5 Mjup. Our search is ~4mag deeper than previous work based on 2MASS. We identified several candidates around known stellar members using a combination of color selection and spectral energy distribution fitting. Our followup spectroscopy has identified two new companions as well as confirmed two companions previously identified from photometry, with spectral types of M7.5-M9 and masses of ~15-60 Mju…
Using images taken with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), the first extensive survey of low mass and substellar objects is made in the 15-20 Myr Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL) and Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC) subgroups of the Scorpius Centaurus OB Association (Sco-Cen). Due to the size of our dataset (>2Tb) we developed an extensive open source set of python libraries to reduce our images, including astrometry, coaddition, and PSF photometry. Our survey consists of 29$\times$3 deg$^2$ fields in the UCL and LCC subgroups of Sco-Cen and the creation of a catalog with over 11 million point sources. We c…
We present the discovery of eight young M7-L2 dwarfs in the Taurus star-forming region and the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association, serendipitously found during a wide-field search for L/T transition dwarfs using Pan-STARRS1 (optical) and WISE (mid-infrared) photometry. We identify PSO J060.3200+25.9644 (near-infrared spectral type L1) and PSO J077.1033+24.3809 (L2) as new members of Taurus based on their VL-G gravity classifications, the consistency of their photometry and proper motions with previously known Taurus objects, and the low probability of contamination by field objects. PSO J077.10…
We aim at identifying very low-mass isolated planetary-mass member candidates in the nearest OB association to the Sun, Upper Scorpius (145 pc; 5-10 Myr), to constrain the form and shape of the luminosity function and mass spectrum in this regime. We conducted a deep multi-band ($Y$=21.2, $J$=20.5, $Z$=22.0 mag) photometric survey of six square degrees in the central region of Upper Scorpius. We extend the current sequence of astrometric and spectroscopic members by about two magnitudes in $Y$ and one magnitude in $J$, reaching potentially T-type free-floating members in the association with p…
To improve the census of the Upper Sco association (~11 Myr, ~145 pc), we have identified candidate members using parallaxes, proper motions, and color-magnitude diagrams from several wide-field imaging surveys and have obtained optical and infrared spectra of several hundred candidates to measure their spectral types and assess their membership. We also have performed spectroscopy on a smaller sample of previously known or suspected members to refine their spectral types and evidence of membership. We have classified 530 targets as members of Upper Sco, 377 of which lack previous spectroscopy…
We report on a deep photometric survey covering an area of 1.17 deg$^2$ in the young Upper Scorpius stellar association using VIMOS $Iz$ and UKIDSS $ZJHK$ data taking several years apart. The search for the least massive population of Upper Scorpius ($\sim$5-10 Myr, 145 pc) is performed on the basis of various optical and infrared color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, including WISE photometry, in the magnitude interval $J$=14.5-19 mag (completeness), which corresponds to substellar masses from 0.028 through 0.004 M$_\odot$ at the age and distance of Upper Scorpius. We also present the pro…
The first two of a total of six nano-satellites that will constitute the BRITE-Constellation space photometry mission have recently been launched successfully. In preparation for this project, we carried out time-resolved colour photometry in a field that is an excellent candidate for BRITE measurements from space. We acquired 117 h of Stromgren uvy data during 19 nights. Our targets comprised the Beta Cephei stars Kappa and Lambda Sco, the eclipsing binary Mu 1 Sco, and the variable super/hypergiant Zeta 1 Sco. For Kappa Sco, a photometric mode identification in combination with results from …
We present the results of a long term orbit monitoring program, using sparse aperture masking observations taken with NIRC2 on the Keck-II telescope, of seven G to M-type members of the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Sco-Cen OB association. We present astrometry and derived orbital elements of the binary systems we have monitored, and also determine the age, component masses, distance and reddening for each system using the orbital solutions and multi-band photometry, including Hubble Space Telescope photometry, and a Bayesian fitting procedure. We find that the models can be forced into agree…
We report rotational periods for 16 young brown dwarfs in the nearby Upper Scorpius association, based on 72 days of high-cadence, high-precision photometry from the Kepler space telescope's K2 mission. The periods range from a few hours to two days (plus one outlier at 5 days), with a median just above one day, confirming that brown dwarfs, except at the very youngest ages, are fast rotators. Interestingly, four of the slowest rotators in our sample exhibit mid-infrared excess emission from disks; at least two also show signs of disk eclipses and accretion in the lightcurves. Comparing these …
We present deep 1.2 millimeter photometry of 37 stars in the young (5 Myr) Upper Scorpius OB association, sensitive to ~4 x 10^-3 Mjup of cool millimeter dust. Disks around four low- and solar-mass stars are detected, as well as one debris disk around an intermediate mass star, with dust masses ranging from 3.6 x 10^-3 -- 1.0 x 10^-1 Mjup. The source with the most massive disk exhibits a transition-disk spectral energy distribution. Combining our results with previous studies, we find the millimeter-detection fraction of Class II sources has significantly decreased from younger ages, and compa…
High-precision photometry from space-based missions such as K2 and TESS enables detailed studies of young star variability. However, because space-based observing campaigns are often short (e.g., 80 days for K2), complementary long-baseline photometric surveys are critical for obtaining a complete understanding of young star variability, which can change on timescales of minutes to years. We therefore present and analyze light curves of members of the Upper Scorpius association made over 5.5 years by the ground-based Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT), which complement the high-preci…
We present the results of a deep ZYJ near-infrared survey of 13.5 square degrees in the Upper Scorpius (USco) OB association. We photometrically selected ~100 cluster member candidates with masses in the range 30-5 Jupiters, according to state-of-the-art evolutionary models. We identified 67 ZYJ candidates as bona-fide members, based on complementary photometry and astrometry. We also extracted five candidates detected with VISTA at YJ-only. One is excluded using deep optical z-band imaging, while two are likely non-members, and three remain as potential members. We conclude that the USco mass…
We searched for binary companions to 20 young brown dwarfs in the Upper Scorpius association (145 pc, 5 Myr, nearest OB association) with the the Laser Guide Star adaptive optics system and the facility infrared camera NIRC2 on the 10 m Keck II telescope. We discovered a 0.14" companion (20.9+-0.4 AU) to the <0.1 MSun object SCH J16091837-20073523. From spectral deconvolution of integrated-light near-IR spectroscopy of SCH1609 using the SpeX spectrograph (Rayner et al. 2003), we estimate primary and secondary spectral types of M6+-0.5 and M7+-1.0, corresponding to masses of 79+-17 MJup and 55+…
We present the discovery of a substellar companion on a wide orbit around the ~2.5 Msun star HIP 78530, which is a member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. We have obtained follow-up imaging over two years and show that the companion and primary share common proper motion. We have also obtained JHK spectroscopy of the companion and confirm its low surface gravity, in accordance with the young age of the system. A comparison with Drift-Phoenix synthetic spectra indicates an effective temperature of 2800+/-200 K and a comparison with template spectra of young and old dwarfs indicates …
Moderate-resolution, near-infrared spectra between 0.8 and 5.2 microns were obtained for 12 late-type (K0-M3) disk-bearing members of the ~5 Myr old Upper Scorpius OB association using SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. For most sources, continuum excess emission first becomes apparent between ~2.2 and 4.5 microns and is consistent with that produced by single-temperature blackbodies having characteristic temperatures ranging from ~500 to 1300 K. The near-infrared spectra for 5 of 12 Upper Scorpius sources exhibit Pa-gamma, Pa-beta and Br-gamma emission, indicators of disk accretion…
We present MIPS 24um and 70um photometry for 205 members of the Upper Scorpius OB Association. These data are combined with published MIPS photometry for 15 additional association members to assess the frequency of circumstellar disks around 5 Myr old stars with spectral types between B0 and M5. Twelve stars have a detectable 70um excess, each of which also has a detectable 24um excess. A total of 54 stars are identified with a 24um excess more than 32% above the stellar photosphere. The MIPS observations reveal 19 excess sources -- 8 A/F/G stars and 11 K/M stars -- that were not previously id…
Aims: We study the formation of substellar objects (exoplanets and brown dwarfs) as companions to young nearby stars. Methods: With high contrast AO imaging obtained with NACO at ESO's VLT we search for faint companion-candidates around our targets, whose companionship can be confirmed with astrometry. Results: In the course of our imaging campaign we found a faint substellar companion of the nearby pre-main sequence star PZ Tel, a member of the beta Pic moving group. The companion is 5-6 mag fainter than its host star in JHK and is located at a separation of only 0.3 arcsec (or 15 AU of proje…
We report the serendipitous discovery of several young mid-M stars found during a search for new members of the 30-40 Myr-old Octans Association. Only one of the stars may be considered a possible Octans(-Near) member. However, two stars have proper motions, kinematic distances, radial velocities, photometry and Li I 6708AA measurements consistent with membership in the 8-10 Myr-old TW Hydrae Association. Another may be an outlying member of TW Hydrae but has a velocity similar to that predicted by membership in Octans. We also identify two new lithium-rich members of the neighbouring Scorpius…
Spectroscopic follow-up is a pre-requisite for studies of the formation and early evolution of brown dwarfs. Here we present IRTF/SpeX near-infrared spectroscopy of 30 candidate members of the young Upper Scorpius association, selected from our previous survey work. All 24 high confidence members are confirmed as young very low mass objects with spectral types from M5 to L1, 15-20 of them are likely brown dwarfs. This high yield confirms that brown dwarfs in Upper Scorpius can be identified from photometry and proper motions alone, with negligible contamination from field objects (<4%). Out of…
We present a census of the disk population for UKIDSS selected brown dwarfs in the 5-10 Myr old Upper Scorpius OB association. For 116 objects originally identified in UKIDSS, the majority of them not studied in previous publications, we obtain photometry from the WISE database. The resulting colour-magnitude and colour-colour plots clearly show two separate populations of objects, interpreted as brown dwarfs with disks (class II) and without disks (class III). We identify 27 class II brown dwarfs, 14 of them not previously known. This disk fraction (27 out of 116 or 23%) among brown dwarfs wa…
SONYC - Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters - is a survey program to investigate the frequency and properties of brown dwarfs down to masses below the Deuterium burning limit in nearby star forming regions. In this second paper, we present results on the ~1 Myr old cluster Rho Ophiuchi, combining our own deep optical and near-infrared imaging using Subaru with photometry from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Of the candidates selected from iJKs photometry, we have confirmed three -- including a new brown dwarf with a mass close to the Deuterium limit -- as l…
We present new z- and H-band photometry and proper motion measurements for the five candidate very-low-mass T-type objects we recently proposed to be members of the nearest OB association to the Sun, Upper Scorpius. These new data fail to corroborate our prior conclusions regarding their spectral types and affiliation with the Upper Scorpius population. We conclude that we may be in presence of a turnover in the mass function of Upper Sco taking place below 10-4 Jupiter masses, depending on the age assigned to Upper Sco and the models used.
We present an analysis of the ages and star-formation history of the F-type stars in the Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL) and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC) subgroups of Scorpius-Centaurus. We find that 1) our empirical isochrones are consistent with the previously published age-rank of the Sco-Cen subgroups, 2) LCC and UCL appear to reach the main sequence turn-on at spectral types ~F4 and ~F2, respectively. An analysis of the A-type stars shows US reaching the main sequence at about spectral type ~A3. 3) The median ages for the pre-main sequence members of UCL and LCC are 16 Myr …
We used the Immersion GRating Infrared Spectrometer (IGRINS) to determine fundamental parameters for 61 K- and M-type young stellar objects (YSOs) located in the Ophiuchus and Upper Scorpius star-forming regions. We employed synthetic spectra and a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to fit specific K-band spectral regions and determine the photospheric temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$), surface gravity ($\log$ g), magnetic field strength (B), projected rotational velocity ($v \sin i$), and K-band veiling ($r_{\rm K}$). We determined B for $\sim$46% of our sample. Stellar parameters were compared to t…
The star HD144548 (=HIP~78977; TYP~6212-1273-1) has been known as a detached eclipsing binary and a bona-fide member of the Upper Scorpius OB association. Continuous photometry from the K2 mission on Campaign Two has revealed the presence of additional eclipses due to the presence of a third star in the system. These are explained by a system composed of the two previously known members of the eclipsing system (Ba and Bb) with a period of 1.63 d, orbiting around an F7-F8V star with a period of 33.945 +/- 0.002 d in an eccentric orbit (e_A = 0.2652 +/- 0.0003). The timing of the eclipses of Ba …
We present a near-infrared photometric search for unresolved substellar companions and debris disks around white dwarfs in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Large Area Survey. We cross-correlate the SDSS DR4 and McCook & Sion catalogues of white dwarfs with the UKIDSS DR8 producing 3109 and 163 unique matches respectively. Cooling models are fitted to the optical photometry of a subsample of DA white dwarfs and extended to the near-infrared. A comparison is then made with the observed photometry to identify those stars with a near-infrared excess consistent with the presence of a cool compani…
The Upper Scorpius OB association is the nearest region of recent massive star formation and thus an important benchmark for investigations concerning stellar evolution and planet formation timescales. We present nine EBs in Upper Scorpius, three of which are newly reported here and all of which were discovered from K2 photometry. Joint fitting of the eclipse photometry and radial velocities from newly acquired Keck-I/HIRES spectra yields precise masses and radii for those systems that are spectroscopically double-lined. The binary orbital periods in our sample range from 0.6-100 days, with to…
We have performed a survey for new members of the Upper Sco association that have circumstellar disks using mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Through optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we have confirmed 185 candidates as likely members of Upper Sco with spectral types ranging from mid-K to M9. They comprise ~36% of the known disk-bearing members of the association. We also have compiled all available mid-infrared photometry from WISE and the Spitzer Space Telescope for the known members of Upper Sco, resulting in a catalog of data for 1608 object…
Our aim is to identify substellar members of the nearby Hyades open star cluster to determine the photometric and spectroscopic properties of brown dwarfs at moderately old ages and extend our knowledge of the substellar mass function of the cluster. We cross-matched the 2MASS and WISE public catalogues and measured proper motions to identify low-mass stars and brown dwarf member candidates in an area of a radius of ten degrees around the central region of the Hyades cluster. We employed astrometric and photometric criteria, Gaia data, and a maximum likelihood method developed by our group to …
Deep optical imaging is used to study time-domain properties of young brown dwarfs in sigma Orionis over typical rotational time-scales and to search for new substellar and planetary-mass cluster members. We used VIMOS at the VLT to monitor a 24 arcmin x 16 arcmin field in the I-band. Using the individual images from this run we investigated the photometric time series of nine substellar cluster members with masses from 10 to 60 Mj. The deep stacked image shows cluster members down to $\approx$ 5 Mj. We search for new planetary mass objects by combining our deep I-band photometry with public J…
We report the results of a study of archival SuperWASP light curves for stars in Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen), the nearest OB association. We use SuperWASP time-series photometry to extract rotation periods for 189 candidate members of the Sco-Cen complex, and verify that 162 of those are members of the classic Sco-Cen subgroups of Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL), and Lower Centaurus-Crux (LCC). This study provides the first measurements of rotation periods explicitly for large samples of pre-main sequence (pre-MS) stars spanning the UCL and LCC subgroups. Our final sample of …
We present high time resolution SDSS-$g'$ and SDSS-$z'$ light curves of the primary eclipse in SDSS J141126.20+200911.1, together with time-resolved X-Shooter spectroscopy and near-infrared $JHK_{s}$ photometry. Our observations confirm the substellar nature of the companion, making SDSS J141126.20+200911.1 the first eclipsing white dwarf/brown dwarf binary known. We measure a (white dwarf model dependent) mass and radius for the brown dwarf companion of $M_{2} = 0.050 \pm 0.002$ $M_{\odot}$ and $R_{2} = 0.072 \pm 0.004$ $M_{\odot}$, respectively. The lack of a robust detection of the companio…
Using FORS2 on the Very Large Telescope, we have astrometrically monitored over a period of two months the two components of the brown dwarf system WISE J104915.57-531906.1, the closest one to the Sun. Our astrometric measurements - with a relative precision at the milli-arcsecond scale - allow us to detect the orbital motion and derive more precisely the parallax of the system, leading to a distance of 2.020+/-0.019 pc. The relative orbital motion of the two objects is found to be perturbed, which leads us to suspect the presence of a substellar companion around one of the two components. We …
In a search for eclipsing white dwarfs using the Zwicky Transient Facility lightcurves, we identified a deep eclipsing white dwarf with a dark, substellar companion. The lack of an infrared excess and an orbital period of 10 hours made this a potential exoplanet candidate. We obtained high-speed photometry and radial velocity measurements to characterize the system. The white dwarf has a mass of $0.50\pm0.02\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and a temperature of $10900\pm200\,$K. The companion has a mass of $0.059\pm0.004\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and a small radius of $0.0783\pm0.0013\,\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$. It …
The Upper-Scorpius association (5-11 Myr) contains a unique population of low-mass (M<30 MJup) brown-dwarfs. The detailed relative characterization of their physical properties (mass, radius, temperature, composition, ongoing accretion) offers the opportunity to potentially explore their origin and their mechanisms of formation. We aim at characterizing the chemical and physical properties of three young, late-M brown-dwarfs claimed to be companions of the Upper-Scorpius stars USco161031.9-16191305, HIP77900, and HIP78530 using medium resolution spectroscopy at UV (R~3300), optical (R~5400), a…
(Abridged) Our aim is to identify analogues of gas giant planets, as companions at wide separations of very young stars. To identify these objects, we cross correlated the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Infrared Deep Sky Survey Galactic Clusters Survey (UKIDSS GCS) catalogues to search for common proper motion companions to 1195 already known members of Upper Scorpius (USco; age $\sim$5-10 Myr, distance $\sim$145 pc). We present the discovery and spectroscopic characterisation of two very wide subste…
It has been suggested that besides stellar companions, substellar objects in close orbits may be able to trigger mass loss in a common envelope phase and form hot subdwarfs. In an ongoing project we search for close substellar companions combining time resolved high resolution spectroscopy with photometry. We determine the fraction of as yet undetected radial velocity variable systems from a sample of 27 apparently single sdB stars to be 16%. We discovered low-mass stellar companions to the He-sdB CPD-20 1123 and the pulsator KPD 0629-0016. The brown dwarf reported to orbit the eclipsing binar…
We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the eclipsing dwarf nova PHL 1445, which, with an orbital period of 76.3 min, lies just below the period minimum of ~82 min for cataclysmic variable stars. Averaging four eclipses reveals resolved eclipses of the white dwarf and bright spot. We determined the system parameters by fitting a parameterised eclipse model to the averaged lightcurve. We obtain a mass ratio of q = 0.087 +- 0.006 and inclination i = 85.2 +- 0.9 degrees. The primary and donor masses were found to be Mw = 0.73 +- 0.03 Msun and Md = 0.064 +- 0.005 Msun, respectively. Thro…
We have discovered that the brown dwarf WISEJ014656.66+423410.0 is a close binary (0.0875$\pm$0.0021 arcsec, 0.93$^{+0.12}_{-0.16}$ AU) from Keck laser guide star adaptive optics imaging. Our photometry for this system reveals that both components are less luminous than those in any known substellar binary. Combining a new integrated-light spectrum (T9p) and resolved YJH-band photometry from Keck allows us to perform spectral decomposition and assign component types of T9 and Y0. Many of the unusual features in the spectrum might be explained by high surface gravity: Y-band peak broadened to t…
GJ 758 B is a cold (~600K) companion to a Sun-like star at 29 AU projected separation, which was recently detected with high-contrast imaging. Here we present photometry of the companion in seven photometric bands from Subaru/HiCIAO, Gemini/NIRI and Keck/NIRC2, providing a rich sampling of the spectral energy distribution in the 1-5 micron wavelength range. A clear detection at 1.58 micron combined with an upper limit at 1.69 micron shows methane absorption in the atmosphere of the companion. The mass of the companion remains uncertain, but an updated age estimate indicates that the most likel…
We present projected rotational velocities for 20 early-type (B8-A9) and 74 late-type (F2-M8) members of the ~5 Myr old Upper Scorpius OB Association derived from high dispersion optical spectra obtained with the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) on Keck I and the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) on the Magellan Clay telescope. The spectroscopic sample is composed of stars and brown dwarfs with infrared signatures of circumstellar disks, both primordial and debris, and non-excess sources of comparable spectral type. We merge projected rotational velocities, accretion diagnost…
Context: We report the discovery of TOI-519 b (TIC 218795833), a transiting substellar object (R = 1.07 RJup) orbiting a faint M dwarf (V = 17.35) on a 1.26 d orbit. Brown dwarfs and massive planets orbiting M dwarfs on short-period orbits are rare, but more have already been discovered than expected from planet formation models. TOI-519 is a valuable addition into this group of unlikely systems, and adds towards our understanding of the boundaries of planet formation. Aims: We set out to determine the nature of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS ) object of interest TOI-519 b. Me…
We present results of far-infrared photometric observations with Herschel PACS of a sample of Upper Scorpius stars, with a detection rate of previously known disk-bearing K and M stars at 70, 100, and 160 micron of 71%, 56%, and 50%, respectively. We fit power-law disk models to the spectral energy distributions of K & M stars with infrared excesses, and have found that while many disks extend in to the sublimation radius, the dust has settled to lower scale heights than in disks of the less evolved Taurus-Auriga population, and have much reduced dust masses. We also conducted Herschel PACS ob…
We present the results of photometric and spectroscopic follow-ups of the lowest mass member candidates in the nearest OB association, Upper Scorpius (5-10 Myr; 145+/-17 pc), with the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC) and European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT). We confirm the membership of the large majority (>80%) of the candidates selected originally photometrically and astrometrically based on their spectroscopic features, weak equivalent widths of gravity-sensitive doublets, and radial velocities. Confirmed members follow a sequence over a wide magnitude range (J=17…
We report the discovery of TOI 263.01 (TIC 120916706), a transiting substellar object (R = 0.87 RJup) orbiting a faint M3.5~V dwarf (V=18.97) on a 0.56~d orbit. We set out to determine the nature of the TESS planet candidate TOI 263.01 using ground-based multicolour transit photometry. The host star is faint, which makes RV confirmation challenging, but the large transit depth makes the candidate suitable for validation through multicolour photometry. Our analysis combines three transits observed simultaneously in r', i', and z_s bands using the MuSCAT2 multicolour imager, three LCOGT-observed…
We present new Spitzer IRAC/PU/MIPS photometry from 3.6 to 24 um, and new Gemini GMOS photometry at 0.48 um, of the young brown dwarf eclipsing binary 2MASS J05352184-0546085, located in the Orion Nebula Cluster. No excess disk emission is detected: The measured fluxes at lambda < 8 um are within 1 sigma (< 0.1 mJy) of a bare photosphere, and the 3 sigma upper limit at 16 um is a mere 0.04 mJy above the bare photospheric level. Together with the known properties of the system, this implies the absence of optically thick disks around the individual components. It also implies that if any circum…
The young associations offer us one of the best opportunities to study the properties of young stellar and substellar objects and to directly image planets thanks to their proximity ($<$200 pc) and age ($\approx$5-150 Myr). However, many previous works have been limited to identifying the brighter, more active members ($\approx$1 M$_\odot$) owing to photometric survey sensitivities limiting the detections of lower mass objects. We search the field of view of 542 previously identified members of the young associations to identify wide or extremely wide (1000-100,000 au in physical separation) c…
We confirm and characterize a close-in ($P_{\rm{orb}}$ = 5.425 days), super-Neptune sized ($5.04^{+0.34}_{-0.37}$ Earth radii) planet transiting K2-33 (2MASS J16101473-1919095), a late-type (M3) pre-main sequence (11 Myr-old) star in the Upper Scorpius subgroup of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association. The host star has the kinematics of a member of the Upper Scorpius OB association, and its spectrum contains lithium absorption, an unambiguous sign of youth (<20 Myr) in late-type dwarfs. We combine photometry from K2 and the ground-based MEarth project to refine the planet's properties and con…
We report the discovery of three low-mass double-lined eclipsing binaries in the pre-main sequence Upper Scorpius association, revealed by $K2$ photometric monitoring of the region over $\sim$ 78 days. The orbital periods of all three systems are $<$5 days. We use the $K2$ photometry plus multiple Keck/HIRES radial velocities and spectroscopic flux ratios to determine fundamental stellar parameters for both the primary and secondary components of each system, along with the orbital parameters. We present tentative evidence that EPIC 203868608 is a hierarchical triple system comprised of an ecl…
The substellar companion HD206893b has recently been discovered by direct imaging of its disc-bearing host star with the SPHERE instrument. We investigate the atypical properties of the companion, which has the reddest near-infrared colours among all known substellar objects, either orbiting a star or isolated, and we provide a comprehensive characterisation of the host star-disc-companion system. We conducted a follow-up of the companion with adaptive optics imaging and spectro-imaging with SPHERE, and a multiinstrument follow-up of its host star. We obtain a R=30 spectrum from 0.95 to 1.64 m…
We used the Magellan adaptive optics (MagAO) system and its VisAO CCD camera to image the young low mass brown dwarf companion CT Chamaeleontis B for the first time at visible wavelengths. We detect it at r', i', z', and Ys. With our new photometry and Teff~2500 K derived from the shape its K-band spectrum, we find that CT Cha B has Av = 3.4+/-1.1 mag, and a mass of 14-24 Mj according to the DUSTY evolutionary tracks and its 1-5 Myr age. The overluminosity of our r' detection indicates that the companion has significant Halpha emission and a mass accretion rate ~6*10^-10 Msun/yr, similar to so…

The origin of the lowest mass free-floating objects -- brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects -- is one of the major unsolved problems in star formation. Establishing a census of young substellar objects is a fundamental prerequisite for distinguishing between competing theoretical scenarios. Such a census allows us to probe the initial mass function (IMF), binary statistics, and properties of accretion disks. Our SONYC (Substellar Objects in Nearby Young Clusters) survey relies on extremely deep wide-field optical and near-infrared imaging, with follow-up spectroscopy, in combination with Sp…
