We investigate the effect of intercombination transitions in excitation hopping processes such as those found in Förster resonance energy transfer. Taking strontium Rydberg states as our model system, the breakdown of $LS$-coupling leads to weakly allowed transitions between Rydberg states of different spin quantum number. We show that the long-range interactions between two Rydberg atoms can be affected by these weakly allowed spin transitions, and the effect is greatest when there is a near-degeneracy between the initial state and a state with a different spin quantum number. We also consider a case of four atoms in a spin chain, and show that a spin impurity can resonantly hop along the chain. By engineering the many-body energy levels of the spin-chain, the breakdown of $LS$ coupling due to inter-electronic effects in individual atoms can be mapped onto a spatial separation of the total spin and the total orbital angular momentum along the spin chain.
We present a novel high-power, frequency-stabilized UV laser source at 326.2~nm, resonant with the Cd $^{1}$S$_{0}$ - $^{3}$P$_{1}$ narrow intercombination transition. We have achieved a maximum produced power of 1~W at 326.2~nm by two successive frequency doubling stages of a narrow-linewidth (< 1~kHz) seed laser at 1304.8~nm. About 3.4 W of optical power at 652.4 nm is produced by a visible Raman fiber amplifier (VRFA) that amplifies and generates the second harmonic of the infrared radiation. The visible light is subsequently frequency-doubled down to 326.2~nm in a non-linear bow-tie cavity…
We report the first realization of large momentum transfer (LMT) clock atom interferometry. Using single-photon interactions on the strontium ${}^1S_0 - {}^3P_1$ transition, we demonstrate Mach-Zehnder interferometers with state-of-the-art momentum separation of up to $141\,\hbar k$ and gradiometers of up to $81\,\hbar k$. Moreover, we circumvent excited state decay limitations and extend the gradiometer duration to 50 times the excited state lifetime. Because of the broad velocity acceptance of the interferometry pulses, all experiments are performed with laser-cooled atoms at a temperature o…
The properties of photoassociation (PA) spectra near the intercombination line (the weak transition between $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{1}$ states) of group II atoms are theoretically investigated. As an example we have carried out a calculation for Calcium atoms colliding at ultra low temperatures of 1 mK, 1 $μ$K, and 1 nK. Unlike in most current photoassociation spectroscopy the Doppler effect can significantly affect the shape of the investigated lines. Spectra are obtained using Ca--Ca and Ca--Ca$^*$ short-range {\it ab initio} potentials and long-range van der Waals and resonance dipole poten…
Two efficient and isotope-selective resonant two-photon ionization techniques for loading barium ions into radio-frequency (RF)-traps are demonstrated. The scheme of using a strong dipole-allowed transition at λ=553 nm as a first step towards ionization is compared to the established technique of using a weak intercombination line (λ=413 nm). An increase of two orders of magnitude in the ionization efficiency is found favoring the transition at 553 nm. This technique can be implemented using commercial all-solid-state laser systems and is expected to be advantageous compared to other narrowban…
We predict feasibility of the photoassociative formation of Sr_2 molecules in arbitrary vibrational levels of the electronic ground state based on state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Key is the strong spin-orbit interaction between the c^3Π_u, A^1Σ_u^+ and B^1Σ_u^+ states. It creates not only an effective dipole moment allowing free-to-bound transitions near the ^1S + ^3P_1 intercombination line but also facilitates bound-to-bound transitions via resonantly coupled excited state rovibrational levels to deeply bound rovibrational levels of the ground X^1Σ_g^+ potential, with v" as low as v…
We present a gradiometer based on matter-wave interference of alkaline-earth-metal atoms, namely $^{88}$Sr. The coherent manipulation of the atomic external degrees of freedom is obtained by large-momentum-transfer Bragg diffraction, driven by laser fields detuned away from the narrow $^1$S$_0$-$^3$P$_1$ intercombination transition. We use a well-controlled artificial gradient, realized by changing the relative frequencies of the Bragg pulses during the interferometer sequence, in order to characterize the sensitivity of the gradiometer. The sensitivity reaches $1.5 \times 10^{-5}$ s$^{-2}$ fo…
Magnetically tunable scattering resonances have been used with great success for precise control of s-wave scattering lengths in ultracold atomic collisions. We describe relatively simple yet quite powerful analytic treatments of such resonances based on the analytic properties of the van der Waals long range potential. This theory can be used to characterize a number of properties of specific resonances that have been used successfully in various experiments with $^{87}$Rb, $^{85}$Rb, $^{40}$K, and $^{6}$Li. Optical Feshbach resonances are also possible and may be practical with narrow interc…
Attosecond four-wave mixing spectroscopy using an XUV pulse and two noncollinear near-infrared pulses is employed to measure Rydberg wavepacket dynamics resulting from extreme ultraviolet excitation of a 3s electron in atomic argon into a series of autoionizing 3s-1np Rydberg states around 29 eV. The emitted signals from individual Rydberg states exhibit oscillatory structure and persist well beyond the expected lifetimes of the emitting Rydberg states. These results reflect substantial contributions of longer-lived Rydberg states to the four wave mixing emission signals of each individually d…
We perform a comprehensive investigation of Förster resonant energy transfer in a room-temperature thermal mixture of ammonia molecules and rubidium Rydberg atoms. Fully state-resolved measurement of the Rydberg-atom populations is achieved by combining millimeter-wave state transfer with state-selective field ionization. This allows aspects of the energy transfer process such as state dependence, ammonia pressure dependence, and dependence on the energy resonance condition to be investigated in detail. Our results pave the way for future quantum experiments combining polar molecules and Rydbe…
The resonant transfer of energy from the inversion sublevels in NH$_3$ to He atoms in triplet Rydberg states with principal quantum number $n=38$ has been controlled using electric fields below 15 V/cm in intrabeam collisions at translational temperatures of $\sim1$ K. The experiments were performed in pulsed supersonic beams of NH$_3$ seeded in He at a ratio of 1:19. The He atoms were prepared in the metastable 1s2s $^3$S$_1$ level in a pulsed electric discharge in the trailing part of the beams. The velocity slip between the heavy NH$_3$ and the lighter metastable He was exploited to perform…
Photoionization of an atom $A$, in the presence of a neighboring atom $B$, can proceed via resonant excitation of $B$ with subsequent energy transfer to $A$ through two-center electron-electron correlation. We demonstrate that this two-center mechanism can strongly outperform direct photoionization at nanometer internuclear distances and possesses characteristic features in its time development and the spectrum of emitted electrons.
It is well known that interatomic or intermolecular interactions driven by two-center electronic dipole-dipole correlations fall off rapidly with the inter-site distance. We show, however, that the effective strength of interatomic reaction channels, which are triggered by a resonant field, can exhibit a nonmonotonous distance dependence, being strongly reduced when the atoms come closer. This surprising result is demonstrated by considering resonant two-center photoionization as an example. Our findings are supported by available experimental data.
Large scale atom interferometers promise unrivaled strain sensitivity to midband (0.1 - 10 Hz) gravitational waves, and will probe a new parameter space in the search for ultra-light scalar dark matter. These atom interferometers require a momentum separation above 10^4 \hbar k between interferometer arms in order to reach the target sensitivity. Prohibitively high optical intensity and wavefront flatness requirements have thus far limited the maximum achievable momentum splitting. We propose a scheme for optical cavity enhanced atom interferometry, using circulating, spatially resolved pulses…
An oscillating electric field at 1.356 GHz was used to promote the resonant energy transfer process: $43d_{5/2}+43d_{5/2} \to 45p_{3/2}+41f$ between translationally cold $^{85}$Rb Rydberg atoms. The ac Stark shifts due to this dressing field created degeneracies between the initial and final two-atom states of this process. The ac field strength was scanned to collect spectra which are analogous to dc electric-field-induced resonant energy transfer spectra. Different resonances were observed for different magnetic sublevels involved in the process. Compared to earlier work performed at higher …
Resonant energy transfer between cold Rydberg atoms was used to determine Rydberg atom energy levels, at precisions approaching those obtainable in microwave spectroscopy. Laser cooled Rb atoms from a magneto-optical trap were optically excited to 32d Rydberg states. The two-atom process 32d(j=5/2) + 32d(j=5/2) -> 34p(j=3/2) + 30g is resonant at an electric field of approximately 0.3 V/cm. This process is driven by the electric dipole-dipole interaction, which is allowed due to the partial f character that the g state acquires in an electric field. The experimentally observed resonant field, t…
Ultracold atoms at temperatures close to the recoil limit have been achieved by extending Doppler cooling to forbidden transitions. A cloud of ^40Ca atoms has been cooled and trapped to a temperature as low as 6 μK by operating a magneto-optical trap on the spin-forbidden intercombination transition. Quenching the long-lived excited state with an additional laser enhanced the scattering rate by a factor of 15, while a high selectivity in velocity was preserved. With this method more than 10% of pre-cooled atoms from a standard magneto-optical trap have been transferred to the ultracold trap. M…
We study resonant energy transfer in a one-dimensional chain of two to five atoms by analyzing time-dependent probabilities as function of their interatomic distances. The dynamics of the system are first investigated by including the nearest-neighbour interactions and then accounting for all next-neighbour interactions. We find that inclusion of nearest-neighbour interactions in the Hamiltonian for three atoms chain exhibits perdiocity during the energy transfer dynamics, however this behavior displays aperiodicity with the all-neighbour interactions. It shows for the equidistant chains of fo…

Using a wave packet propagation approach, we find that the resonant charge transfer process of H^- near a Cu(111) surface is strongly influenced by transient hybrid states. These states originate from an ion-induced confinement parallel to the surface together with the surface-localization character of the metal potential along the surface normal. The lowest members of these states have lifetimes of the order of interaction times in typical particle-surface scattering experiments. The propagation of the electron probability density provides clear evidence for this effect in visualizing the evo…
We present a study of high-order-harmonic generation (HHG) assisted by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses, which can lead to the excitation of inner-shell electrons and the generation of a second HHG plateau. With the treatment of a one-dimensional model of krypton, based on time-dependent configuration interaction singles (TDCIS) of an effective two-electron system, we show that the XUV-assisted HHG spectrum reveals the duration of the semiclassical electron trajectories. The results are interpreted by the strong-field approximation (SFA) and the importance of the hole transfer durin…
A formal derivation is presented of the energy transfer rate between radiation and matter due to the scattering of an isotropic distribution of resonant photons. The derivation is developed in the context of the two-level atom in the absence of collisions and radiative transitions to and from the continuum, but includes the full angle-averaged redistribution function for photon scattering. The result is compared with previous derivations, all of which have been based on the Fokker-Planck approximation to the radiative transfer equation. A new Fokker-Planck approximation, including an extension…
The charge transfer (ionization) of hydrogen Rydberg atoms (principal quantum number $n=25-34$) incident at a Cu(100) surface is investigated. Unlike fully metallic surfaces, where the Rydberg electron energy is degenerate with the conduction band of the metal, the Cu(100) surface has a projected bandgap at these energies, and only discrete image states are available through which charge transfer can take place. Resonant enhancement of charge transfer is observed at hydrogen principal quantum numbers for which the Rydberg energy matches the energy of one of the image states. The integrated sur…
We present the results of experiments demonstrating the spectroscopic detection of Förster resonance energy transfer from NH$_3$ in the $X\,^1A_1$ ground electronic state to helium atoms in 1s$n$s\,$^3$S$_1$ Rydberg levels, where $n=37$ and $n=40$. For these values of $n$ the 1s$n$s\,$^3$S$_1\rightarrow$1s$n$p\,$^3$P$_J$ transitions in helium lie close to resonance with the ground-state inversion transitions in NH$_3$, and can be tuned through resonance using electric fields of less than 10~V/cm. In the experiments, energy transfer was detected by direct state-selective electric field ionizati…
We compare the electron dynamics at monocrystalline Cu(111), Au(100) and Pd(111) precursor substrates with vicinal nanosteps. The unoccupied bands of a surface superlattice are populated \textit{via} the resonant charge transfer (RCT) between the surface and a H$^-$ ion that flies by at grazing angles. A quantum mechanical wave packet propagation approach is utilized to simulate the motion of the active electron where time-evolved wave packet densities are used to visualize the dynamics through the superlattice. The survived ion fraction in the reflected beam generally exhibits modulations as …
