We construct a generic coarse-grained dynamics of a thin inflexible planar layer of polar-ordered suspension of active particles, that is frictionally coupled to an embedding isotropic passive fluid medium with a friction coefficient $Γ$. Being controlled by $Γ$, our model provides a unified framework to describe the long wavelength behaviour of a variety of thin polar-ordered systems, ranging from {\em wet} to {\em dry} active matters and free standing active films. Investigations of the linear instabilities around a chosen orientationally ordered uniform reference state reveal generic moving and static instabilities in the system, that can depend sensitively on $Γ$. Based on our results, we discuss estimation of bounds on $Γ$ in experimentally accessible systems.
The slip behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer melts flowing on non-adsorbing surfaces made of short non-entangled PDMS chains densely end-grafted to silica has been characterized. For high enough shear rates, constant slip lengths proportional to the bulk fluid viscosity have been observed, in agreement with Navier's interfacial equation, and demonstrating that the interfacial Navier's friction coefficient is a local quantity, independent of the polymer molecular weight. Comparing the interfacial shear stresses deduced from these measured slip lengths to available friction stress me…
We analyze theoretically the effect of friction on quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements that probe soft (viscoelastic) films and biomolecular layers adsorbed from aqueous solutions. While water provides a natural environment for biomolecules, an interface with unknown rheological properties forms between the adsorbed soft molecular layer and the quartz substrate in the latter case. We investigate therefore the dynamics of soft films adsorbed onto a solid quartz surface within a continuum mechanics approach using both the Maxwell and the Voight/Kelvin models of viscoelasticity and the…
Smoothed particle hydrodynamics study of friction of the coarse-grained $α$-Al2O3/$α$-Al2O3 and $α$-Fe2O3/$α$-Fe2O3 contacts in behavior of the spring interfacial potential
We study the peeling process of a thin viscoelastic tape from a rigid substrate. Two different boundary conditions are considered at the interface between the tape and the substrate: stuck adhesion, and relative sliding in the presence of frictional shear stress. In the case of perfectly sticking interfaces, we found that the viscoelastic peeling behavior resembles the classical Kendall behavior of elastic tapes, with the elastic modulus given by the tape high-frequency viscoelastic modulus. Including the effect of frictional sliding, which occurs at the interface adjacent to the peeling front…
The role of the polymer volume fraction, $ϕ$, on steady state slippage and interfacial friction is investigated for a semi-dilute polystyrene solutions in diethyl phthalate in contact with two solid surfaces. Signicant slippage is evidenced for all samples, with slip lengths b obeying a power law dependence. The Navier's interfacial friction coecient, k, is deduced from the slip length measurements and from independent measurements of the solutions viscosity $η$. The observed scaling of k versus $ϕ$ clearly excludes a molecular mechanism of friction based on the existence of a depletion layer.…
Using a dynamic Surface Force Apparatus, we demonstrate that the notion of slip length used to describe the boundary flow of simple liquids, is not appropriate for viscoelastic liquids. Rather, the appropriate description lies in the original Navier's partial slip boundary condition, formulated in terms of an interfacial friction coefficient. We establish an exact analytical expression to extract the interfacial friction coefficient from oscillatory drainage forces between a sphere and a plane, suitable for dynamic SFA or Atomic Force Microscopy non-contact measurements. We use this model to i…
Frictional interfaces are abundant in natural and engineering systems, and predicting their behavior still poses challenges of prime scientific and technological importance. At the heart of these challenges lies the inherent coupling between the interfacial constitutive relation -- the macroscopic friction law -- and the bulk elasticity of the bodies that form the frictional interface. In this feature paper, we discuss the generic properties of the macroscopic friction law and the many ways in which its coupling to bulk elasticity gives rise to rich spatiotemporal frictional dynamics. We first…
We report measurements of the normal surface forces and friction forces between two mica surfaces separated by a nano-film of dicationic ionic liquid using a Surface Force Balance. The dicationic ionic liquid 1,10-bis(3-methylimidazolium)decane di- [bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)]imide forms a layered structure in nano-confinement, revealed by oscillatory structural forces. Friction measurements performed at different film thicknesses display quantized friction, i.e. discontinuities in friction as layers are squeezed out and friction coefficients dependent on the number of liquid layers confined…
The results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of the friction at an interface between polymer melts and weakly attractive crystalline surfaces are reported. We consider a coarse-grained bead-spring model of linear chains with adjustable intrinsic stiffness. The structure and relaxation dynamics of polymer chains near interfaces are quantified by the radius of gyration and decay of the time autocorrelation function of the first normal mode. We found that the friction coefficient at small slip velocities exhibits a distinct maximum which appears due to shear-induced alignment of semif…
The modes of attachments, detachments and relaxations of molecules of rubbers and gels on solid surfaces are keys to understanding their frictional properties. An early stochastic model of polymer relaxations on surfaces was given by Schallamach, which has now evolved in various ways. A review of these developments is presented along with the experimental data that elucidate the kinetic friction of smooth rubber against smooth surfaces. These soft rubbers exhibit various types of instabilities while sliding on surfaces. A few examples of these instabilities are provided.
We propose an elasto-plastic inspired friction model which incorporates interfacial stiffness. Steady state sliding friction is characterized by a generic nonmonotonic behavior, including both velocity weakening and strengthening branches. In 1D and upon the application of sideway loading, we demonstrate the existence of transient cracklike fronts whose velocity is independent of sound speed, which we propose to be analogous to the recently discovered slow interfacial rupture fronts. Most importantly, the properties of these transient inhomogeneously loaded fronts are determined by steady stat…
The slipperiness of ice is an everyday-life phenomenon which, surprisingly, remains controversial despite a long scientific history. The very small friction measured on ice is classically attributed to the presence of a thin self-lubricating film of meltwater between the slider and the ice. But while the macroscale friction behavior of ice and snow has been widely investigated, very little is known about the interfacial water film and its mechanical properties. In this work, we develop a stroke-probe force measurement technique to uncover the microscopic mechanisms underlying ice lubrication. …
Two-dimensional Stokes flow with injection and suction is investigated through a second-order, perturbative mode-coupling approach. We examine the time-dependent disturbance of an initially circular interface separating two viscous fluids, and derive a system of nonlinear differential equations describing the evolution of the interfacial perturbation amplitudes. Linear stability analysis reveals that an injection-induced expanding interface is stable, while a contracting motion driven by suction is unstable. Curiously, at the linear level this suction instability is independent of the viscosit…
The phenomenon of corrugated surfaces is a known technical problem of tribological systems; considerable work has been published in the past on the aspect of rail corrugation of railway systems. Less known is a similar phenomenon observed within the cylinder-piston system of advanced automotive engines using aluminium cylinders. This paper investigates the condition leading to cylinder corrugation in the piston/cylinder system. Material investigations strongly indicate that heat in the contact is playing a major role. Using basic analytical relationships from contact mechanics, the condition r…
Ferrofluids are strongly magnetic fluids consisting of magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in a carrier fluid. Besides their technological applications, they have a tendency to form beautiful and intriguing patterns when subjected to external static and dynamic magnetic fields. Most of the patterns occur in systems consisting of two fluids: one ferrofluidic and one non-magnetic (oil, air, etc.), wherein the fluid-fluid interface deforms as a response to magnetic fields. Usually, the fluids are completely immiscible and so the interfacial energy in this systems is very large. Here we show that it …
The onset and development of instabilities is one of the central problems in fluid mechanics. Here we develop a connection between instabilities of free fluid interfaces and inverted pendula. When acted upon solely by the gravitational force, the inverted pendulum is unstable. This position can be stabilised by the Kapitsa phenomenon, in which high-frequency low-amplitude vertical vibrations of the base creates a fictitious force which opposes the gravitational force. By transforming the dynamical equations governing a fluid interface into an appropriate pendulum, we demonstrate how stability …
Stiff scales adorn the exterior surfaces of fishes, snakes, and many reptiles. They provide protection from external piercing attacks and control over global deformation behavior to aid locomotion, slithering, and swimming across a wide range of environmental condition. In this letter, we investigate the dynamic behavior of biomimetic scale substrates for further understanding the origins of the nonlinearity that involve various aspect of scales interaction, sliding kinematics, interfacial friction, and their combination. Particularly, we study the vibrational characteristics through an analyt…
Hydrodynamic instabilities in miscible fluids are ubiquitous, from natural phenomena up to geological scales, to industrial and technological applications, where they represent the only way to control and promote mixing at low Reynolds numbers, well below the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. As for immiscible fluids, the onset of hydrodynamic instabilities in miscible fluids is directly related to the physics of their interfaces. The focus of this review is therefore on the general mechanisms driving the growth of disturbances at the boundary between miscible fluids, under a variety …
We identify and characterize a new class of fingering instabilities in liquid metals; these instabilities are unexpected due to the large interfacial tension of metals. Electrochemical oxidation lowers the effective interfacial tension of a gallium-based liquid metal alloy to values approaching zero, thereby inducing drastic shape changes, including the formation of fractals. The measured fractal dimension ($D = 1.3 \pm 0.05$) places the instability in a different universality class than other fingering instabilities. By characterizing changes in morphology and dynamics as a function of drople…
We study interfacial instabilities between two spatially periodically sheared ideal fluids. Bloch wavefunction decompositions of the surface deformation and fluid velocities result in a nonhermitian secular matrix with an associated band structure that yields both linear oscillating and nonoscillating instabilities, enhanced near Bragg planes corresponding to the periodicity determined by converging or diverging surface flows. The instabilities persist even when the dynamical effects of the upper fluid are neglected, in contrast to the uniform shear Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability. Periodic …
We propose a theory of shear flow in dense granular materials. A key ingredient of the theory is an effective temperature that determines how the material responds to external driving forces such as shear stresses and vibrations. We show that, within our model, friction between grains produces stick-slip behavior at intermediate shear rates, even if the material is rate-strengthening at larger rates. In addition, externally generated acoustic vibrations alter the stick-slip amplitude, or suppress stick-slip altogether, depending on the pressure and shear rate. We construct a phase diagram that…
We develop a systematic method to derive all orders of mode couplings in a weakly nonlinear approach to the dynamics of the interface between two immiscible viscous fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell. The method is completely general. It includes both the channel geometry driven by gravity and pressure, and the radial geometry with arbitrary injection and centrifugal driving. We find the finite radius of convergence of the mode-coupling expansion. In the channel geometry we carry out the calculation up to third-order couplings, which is necessary to account for the time-dependent Saffman-Taylor finger…
The effect of temperature on friction and slip at the liquid-solid interface has attracted attention over the last twenty years, both numerically and experimentally. However, the role of temperature on slip close to the glass transition has been less explored. Here, we use molecular dynamics to simulate a bi-disperse atomic fluid, which can remain liquid below its melting point (supercooled state), to study the effect of temperature on friction and slip length between the liquid and a smooth apolar wall, in a broad range of temperatures. At high temperatures, an Arrhenius law fits well the tem…
Biomimetic scale-covered substrates provide geometric tailorability via scale orientation, spacing and also interfacial properties of contact in various deformation modes. No work has investigated the effect of friction in twisting deformation of biomimetic scale-covered beams. In this work, we investigate the frictional effects in the biomimetic scale-covered structure by developing an analytical model verified by the finite element simulations. In this model, we consider dry (Coulomb) friction between rigid scales surfaces, and the substrate as the linear elastic rectangular beam. The obtain…
Motivated by the need for a theoretical study in a planar geometry that can easily be implemented experimentally, we study the pressure driven Poiseuille flow of a shear banding fluid. After discussing the "basic states" predicted by a one dimensional calculation that assumes a flat interface between the bands, we proceed to demonstrate such an interface to be unstable with respect to the growth of undulations along it. We give results for the growth rate and wavevector of the most unstable mode that grows initially, as well as for the ultimate flow patterns to which the instability leads. We …
Rolling of a small sphere on a solid support is governed by a non-linear friction that is akin to the Coulombic dry fiction. No motion occurs when the external field is weaker than the frictional resistance. However, with the intervention of an external noise, a viscous friction like property emerges; thus the sphere rolls with an uniform drift velocity that is proportional to the applied field. As the sphere rolls, it rocks forward and backward resulting in substantial fluctuation of displacement opposite to the net drift. The ratio of the integrated probabilities of the negative to positive …
We study the influence of the surface energy and contamination films on rubber adhesion and sliding friction. We find that there is a transfer of molecules from the rubber to the substrate which reduces the work of adhesion and makes the rubber friction insensitive to the substrate surface energy. We show that there is no simple relation between adhesion and friction: adhesion is due to (vertical) detachment processes at the edge of the contact regions (opening crack propagation), while friction in many cases is determined mainly by (tangential) stick-slip instabilities of nanosized regions, w…
We study the 2D linear stability analysis of a deformable solid of a finite height $H$, steadily sliding on top of a rigid solid within a generic rate-and-state friction type constitutive framework, fully accounting for elastodynamic effects. We derive the linear stability spectrum, quantifying the interplay between stabilization related to the frictional constitutive law and destabilization related both to the elastodynamic bi-material coupling between normal stress variations and interfacial slip, and to finite size effects. The stabilizing effects related to the frictional constitutive law …
Using a micro particle imaging velocity technique, we resolve for the first time the three dimensionnal structure of wormlike shear banding flows in straight microchannels. The study revealed two effects, which should be generic for shear banding flows: the first is a strong amplification of the confinement induced by the edge of the channel, the second is an instability of the interface between the shear bands. A detailed quantitative comparison of our experimental measurements with a theoretical study of the diffusive Johnson Segalman model leads to excellent agreement. Our study clarifies t…
Fingering instabilities akin to the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in fluids have been observed in a binary granular system consisting of dense and small particles layered on top of lighter and larger particles, when the system is subjected to vertical vibration and fluidizing gas flow. Using observations from experiments and numerical modelling we explore whether the theory developed to describe the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in fluids is also applicable to binary granular systems. Our results confirm the applicability of the classic RT instability theory for binary granular systems d…
Hydrogel consists of a crosslinked polymer matrix imbibed with a solvent such as water at volume fractions that can exceed 90\%. They are important in many scientific and engineering applications due to their tunable physiochemical properties, bio-compatibility, and ultra-low friction. Their multiphase structure leads to a complex interfacial rheology, yet a detailed, microscopic understanding of hydrogel friction is still emerging. Using a custom-built tribometer, here we identify three distinct regimes of frictional behavior for polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyacrylamide (PAAm), and agarose hydr…

We present a minimal quasistatic 1D model describing the kinematics of the transition from static friction to stick-slip motion of a linear elastic block on a rigid plane. We show how the kinematics of both the precursors to frictional sliding and the periodic stick-slip motion are controlled by the amount of friction-induced torque at the interface. Our model provides a general framework to understand and relate a series of recent experimental observations, in particular the nucleation location of micro-slip instabilities and the build up of an asymmetric field of real contact area.
Thermo-osmotic and related thermo-phoretic phenomena can be found in many situations from biology to colloid science, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we measured the thermo-osmosis coefficient by both mechano-caloric and thermo-osmotic routes, for different solid-liquid interfacial energies. The simulations reveal in particular the crucial role of nanoscale interfacial hydrodynamics. For non-wetting surfaces , thermo-osmotic transport is largely amplified by hydrodynamic slip at the interface. For wetting surfaces, the po…
Using air to displace a viscous fluid contained in Hele-Shaw cell can create a fingering pattern at the interface between the fluids, if the capillary number exceeds a critical value. This Saffman-Taylor instability is revisited for the inverse case of a viscous fluid displacing air, when partially wettable hydrophilic particles are lying on the walls. Though the inverse case is otherwise stable, the presence of the particles results in a fingering instability at low capillary number. This capillary-driven instability is driven-by the integration of particles into the interface which results f…
Collective cell migration plays a crucial role in many developmental processes that underlie morphogenesis, wound healing, or cancer progression. In such coordinated behaviours, cells are organised in coherent structures and actively migrate to serve different biological purposes. In some contexts, namely during epithelial wound healing, it is well known that a migrating free-edge monolayer develops finger-like instabilities, yet the onset is still under debate. Here, by means of theory and numerical simulations, we shed light on the main mechanisms driving the instability process, analysing t…
A highly sheared dense aqueous suspension of granular cornstarch particles displays rich nonlinear rheology. We had previously demonstrated the growth and onset of interfacial instabilities when shear-thinning cornstarch suspensions were displaced by a Newtonian fluid, and had suggested methods to maximise displacement efficiency [Palak, R. Sathayanath, S. K. Kalpathy and R. Bandyopadhyay, Colloids Surf. A Physicochem. Eng. Asp., 629 (2021) 127405]. In the present work, we explore the miscible displacement of a dense aqueous cornstarch suspension in its discontinuous shear-thickening regime in…
With the recent important development of microfluidic systems, miniaturization of flow devices has become a real challenge. Microchannels, however, are characterized by a large surface to volume ratio, so that surface properties strongly affect flow resistance in submicrometric devices. We present here results showing that the concerted effect of wetting . properties and surface roughness may considerably reduce friction of the fluid past the boundaries. The slippage of the fluid at the channel boundaries is shown to be drastically increased by using surfaces that are patterned at the nanomete…
