We investigate single Higgs and Higgs pair production at the LHC in models of Universal Extra Dimensions. After calculating the relevant cross sections, we use the UED model as a testing ground for the Effective Field Theory approach to physics beyond the Standard Model. We show how the UED contributions to Higgs production can be matched to a dimension-6 operator. We then discuss the range of validity of this approach, in particular for Higgs pair production, and determine the sensitivity to the number of KK modes in the loop.
Assuming the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) with a characteristic scale M ~ O(10) TeV, we investigate the naturalness of the Higgs sector at scales below M using an effective field theory (EFT) approach. We obtain the leading 1-loop EFT contributions to the Higgs mass with a Wilsonian-like hard cutoff, and determine the constraints on the corresponding operator coefficients for these effects to alleviate the little hierarchy problem up to the scale of the effective action Λ< M, a condition we denote by "EFT-naturalness". We also determine the types of physics that can lead …
We discuss the validity of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SM EFT) as the low-energy effective theory for the two-Higgs-doublet Model (2HDM). Using the up-to-date Higgs signal strength measurements at the LHC, one can obtain a likelihood function for the Wilson coefficients of dimension-6 operators in the EFT Lagrangian. Given the matching between the 2HDM and the EFT, the constraints on the Wilson coefficients can be translated into constraints on the parameters of the 2HDM Lagrangian. We discuss under which conditions such a procedure correctly reproduces the true limits on the 2H…
We derive the scale of unitarity violation from the geometry of Effective Field Theory (EFT) extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector. The high-energy behavior of amplitudes with more than four scalar legs depends on derivatives of geometric invariants with respect to the physical Higgs field $h$, such that higher-point amplitudes begin to reconstruct the scalar manifold away from our vacuum. In theories whose low-energy limit can be described by the Higgs EFT (HEFT) but not the Standard Model EFT (SMEFT), non-analyticities in the vicinity of our vacuum limit the radius of convergence of …
Recently, the Higgs boson masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and their mixing have been calculated using the complex Two-Higgs-DoubletModel (cTHDM) as an effective field theory (EFT) of the MSSM. Here, we discuss the implementation of this calculation, which we improve in several aspects, into the hybrid framework of FeynHiggs by combing the cTHDM-EFT calculation with the existing fixed-order calculation. This combination allows accurate predictions also in the intermediate regime where some SUSY particles are relatively light, some relatively heavy and some in between.…
We study constraints on new physics from Higgs production at the LHC in the context of an effective field theory (EFT), focusing on Higgs searches in $HV$ ($V=W,Z$) associated production which are particularly sensitive to the high-energy behavior of certain dimension-6 operators. We show that analyses of these searches are generally dominated by a kinematic region where the generic EFT expansion breaks down, and establish under which conditions they can nevertheless be meaningful. For example, constraints from these searches on the Wilson coefficients of operators whose effects grow with ener…
Precise measurements of SM particles properties at the LHC allows to look for heavy New Physics in the context of an Effective Field Theory (EFT). These searches, however, often rely on kinematic regions where the validity of the EFT may be compromised. In this paper we propose to address this issue by comparing with benchmark models. The connection between models and their manifestations as EFTs at low energies allows us to quantify the breakdown of the EFT, and describe ways to combine different sources of constraints beyond Higgs physics. To illustrate these techniques, in this paper we pro…
The 2 Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) of type III has renormalisable Lepton Flavour-Violating couplings, and its one and two-loop ("Barr-Zee") contributions to $μ\to e γ$ are known. In the decoupling limit, where the mass scale M of the second doublet is much greater than the electroweak scale, the model can be parametrised with an Effective Field Theory(EFT) containing dimension six operators. The $1/M^2$ terms of the exact calculation are reproduced in the EFT, provided that the four-fermion operator basis below the weak scale is enlarged with respect to the SU(2)-invariant Buchmuller-Wyler list.…
Depending on whether electroweak physics beyond the Standard Model is based on a linear or on a non-linear implementation of the electroweak symmetry breaking, a linear or a chiral Effective Lagrangian is more appropriate. In this talk, the main low-energy signals that allow to recognize whether the observed Higgs scalar is a dynamical (composite) particle or rather an elementary one are presented, in a model-independent way. The patterns of effective couplings produced upon the assumption of specific composite Higgs models are also discussed.
The lightest Higgs boson mass of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model has been recently computed diagrammatically at the three-loop order in the whole supersymmetric parameters space of the SUSY-QCD sector. The code FeynHiggs combines one- and two-loop fixed-order with the effective-field-theory calculations for the same Higgs mass. The two numerical predictions agree considering the scenario of only one SUSY-scale and vanishing stop mixing parameter below 10 TeV. The agreement is improved by introducing an additional supersymmetric scale and a non-zero stop mixing. Additionally, the comb…
We discuss effective field theories (EFTs) for the Higgs particle, which is not necessarily the Higgs of the Standard Model. We distinguish two different consistent expansions: EFTs that describe decoupling new-physics effects and EFTs that describe non-decoupling new-physics effects. We briefly discuss the first case, the SM-EFT. The focus of this thesis is on the non-decoupling EFTs. We argue that the loop expansion is the consistent expansion in the second case. We introduce the concept of chiral dimensions, equivalent to the loop expansion. Using the chiral dimensions, we expand the electr…
Effective Field Theories offer a consistent bottom-up approach to parametrise small deviations from Standard Model predictions. In this work we report on the application of the Effective Field Theory to shed light on effects from high-scale physics beyond the Standard Model on the Higgs transverse-momentum spectrum. The Standard Model prediction for the transverse-momentum distribution in Higgs boson production through gluon fusion is augmented by three new dimension-six operators, implying the modification of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and the inclusion of a point-like Higgs-gluon c…
We classify effective field theory (EFT) deformations of the Standard Model (SM) according to the analyticity property of the Lagrangian as a function of the Higgs doublet H. Our distinction in analytic and non-analytic corresponds to the more familiar one between linearly and non-linearly realized electroweak symmetry, but offers deeper physical insight. From the UV perspective, non-analyticity occurs when the new states acquire mass from electroweak symmetry breaking, and thus cannot be decoupled to arbitrarily high scales. This is reflected in the IR by the anomalous growth of the interacti…
We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of a Higgs boson produced through gluon fusion in hadron collisions. At small transverse momenta, the large logarithmic terms are resummed up to next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. The resummed computation is consistently matched to the next-to-leading-order (NLO) result valid at large transverse momenta. The ensuing Standard Model prediction is supplemented by possible new-physics effects parametrised through three dimension-six operators related to the modification of the top and bottom Yukawa couplings, and to the inclusion of a point…
We propose a parametrization of anomalous Higgs-boson couplings that is both systematic and practical. It is based on the electroweak chiral Lagrangian, including a light Higgs boson, as the effective field theory (EFT) at the electroweak scale $v$. This is the appropriate framework for the case of sizeable deviations in the Higgs couplings of order $10\%$ from the Standard Model, considered to be parametrically larger than new-physics effects in the sector of electroweak gauge interactions. The role of power counting in identifying the relevant parameters is emphasized. The three relevant sca…
We discuss the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SM-EFT) contributions to neutral- and charge-current Drell-Yan production, associated production of the Higgs and a vector boson, and Higgs boson production via vector boson fusion. We consider all the dimension-six SM-EFT operators that contribute to these processes at leading order, include next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and interface them with parton showering and hadronization in Pythia8 according to the POWHEG method. We discuss existing constraints on the coefficients of dimension-six operators and identify differential and an…
We consider an effective field theory framework with three standard model (SM) gauge singlet right handed neutrinos, and an additional SM gauge singlet scalar field. The framework successfully generates eV masses of the light neutrinos via seesaw mechanism, and accommodates a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP) as dark matter candidate. Two of the gauge singlet neutrinos participate in neutrino mass generation, while the third gauge singlet neutrino is a FIMP dark matter. We explore the correlation between the $\textit{vev}$ of the gauge singlet scalar field which translates as mass of …
Different approaches are used for the calculation of the SM-like Higgs boson mass in the MSSM: the fixed-order diagrammatic approach is accurate for low SUSY scales; the EFT approach, for high SUSY scales. Hybrid approaches, combining fixed-order and EFT calculations, allow to obtain a precise prediction also for intermediary SUSY scales. Here, we briefly discuss the hybrid approach implemented into the code FeynHiggs. In addition, we show how the refined Higgs mass prediction was used to define new MSSM Higgs benchmark scenarios.
We consider extended scalar sectors of the Standard Model as ultraviolet-complete motivations for studying the effective Higgs self-interaction operators of the Standard Model effective field theory. We investigate all motivated heavy scalar models which generate the dimension-6 effective operator, $|H|^6$, at tree level and proceed to identify the full set of tree-level dimension-six operators by integrating out the heavy scalars. Of seven models which generate $|H|^6$ at tree level only two, quadruplets of hypercharge $Y=3Y_H$ and $Y=Y_H$, generate only this operator. Next we perform global …
We re-analyze the $ZHη$-vertex with the form $Z_μ(η\partial^μH-H\partial^μη)$, where $H$ is the 125 GeV Higgs boson and $η$ is an exotic pseudo-axion, based on the effective field theory (EFT) analysis and choose the simplest little Higgs (SLH) model as an example. For a pure gauge singlet pseudoscalar $η$, after carefully removing all off-diagonal two-point transitions, we show that its coefficient $c_{ZHη}$ cannot appear before $\mathcal{O}(ξ^3)$ level, where $ξ$ is the ratio between the electro-weak scale $v$ and a high scale $f$. The same behavior arises in the simplest little Higgs (SLH) …
We investigate naturalness in the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector using effective field theory (EFT) techniques and find the requirements on the new heavy physics that can potentially cure the little hierarchy problem below a scale $Λ\gg O(1 ~{\rm TeV})$, assuming the new heavy particles have a mass larger than $ Λ$. In particular, we determine the conditions under which the 1-loop corrections to $ m_h $ from the heavy new physics can balance those created by SM loop effects up to the naturalness scale $Λ$, a condition we denote by "EFT Naturalness". We obtain the higher dimensional ($n \ge 5…
The Higgs + jet channel at the LHC is sensitive to the effects of new physics both in the total rate and in the transverse momentum distribution at high p_T. We examine the production process using an effective field theory (EFT) language and discuss the possibility of determining the nature of the underlying high scale physics from boosted Higgs production. The effects of heavy color triplet scalars and top partner fermions with TeV scale masses are considered as examples and Higgs-gluon couplings of dimension-5 and dimension-7 are included in the EFT. As a by-product of our study, we examine…
Various methods are used in the literature for predicting the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Fixed-order diagrammatic calculations capture all effects at a given order and yield accurate results for scales of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles that are not separated too much from the weak scale. Effective field theory calculations allow a resummation of large logarithmic contributions up to all orders and therefore yield accurate results for a high SUSY scale. A hybrid approach, where both methods have been combined, is implemented in the co…
I will show, via effective field theory (EFT) techniques, that obtaining an observationally consistent relic density while evading stringent direct detection limits and maintaining $h_{125}$ phenomenology in an extended Higgs sector can be easily achieved. I will then map such an EFT to the low energy limit of the NMSSM with the Higgsinos integrated out. Both the singlino and the singlet-like CP-odd and even scalars in the NMSSM may play a relevant role in such a scenario, while being difficult to probe via conventional searches. The singlet sector of the general NMSSM can be mapped on to a 2H…
Precise predictions for Higgs boson masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model can be obtained by combining fixed-order calculations with effective field theory (EFT) methods for the resummation of large logarithms in case of heavy superpartners. This hybrid approach is implemented in the computer code FeynHiggs and has been applied in previous studies for calculating the mass of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson for low, intermediate and high SUSY scales. In these works it was assumed that the non-standard Higgs bosons share a common mass scale with the supersymmetric squark particles…
We present the NLO (two-loop) QCD corrections to Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion within Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT), including also squared dimension-6 operators and double insertions of operators. The different options to truncate the EFT expansion are contrasted to a non-linear EFT approach (HEFT) and their effects are illustrated by several phenomenological examples.
The detection of production of a pair of Higgs bosons before the end of LHC operation would be clear evidence of New Physics (NP). As searches for non-resonant production of Higgs pairs are being designed it is of particular importance to be able to conveniently present current experimental results in terms of limits in the most 'model-independent' fashion possible. In this article we provide an analytic parametrization of the {\it differential} Higgs-pair production at the LHC in the effective field theory (EFT) extension of the SM. It results from a fit to the theory prediction for the $gg \…
We consider two-loop renormalization of high-dimensional Lorentz scalar operators in the gluonic sector of QCD. These operators appear also in the Higgs effective theory obtained by integrating out the top quark loop in the gluon fusion process. We first discuss the classification of operators and how to construct a good set of basis using both off-shell field theory method and on-shell form factor formalism. To study loop corrections, we apply efficient unitarity-IBP strategy and compute the two-loop minimal form factors of length-3 operators up to dimension sixteen. From the UV divergences o…
We study the CP violating ZZZ vertex in the two-Higgs doublet model, which is a probe of a Jarlskog-type invariant in the extended Higgs sector. The form factor $f_4^Z$ is evaluated at one loop in a general $R_ξ$ gauge and its magnitude is estimated in the realistic parameter space. Then we turn to the decoupling limit of the two-Higgs doublet model, where the extra scalars are heavy and the physics can be described by the Standard Model supplemented by higher-dimensional operators. The leading operator contributing to $f_4^Z$ at one loop is identified. The CP violating ZZZ vertex is not gener…
Constraining CP-violating interactions in effective field theory (EFT) of dimension six faces two challenges. Firstly, degeneracies in the multi-dimensional space of Wilson coefficients have to be lifted. Secondly, quadratic contributions of CP-odd dimension six operators are difficult to disentangle from squared contributions of CP-even dimension six operators and from linear contributions of dimension eight operators. Both of these problems are present when new sources of CP-violation are present in the interactions between the Higgs boson and heavy strongly-interacting fermions. We show tha…
We apply the effective field theoretic (EFT) approach to resum the large perturbative logarithms arising when partonic hard scattering cross-sections are taken to the threshold limit. We consider deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan lepton pair production and the standard model Higgs production through gluon-gluon fusion via heavy-top loop. We demonstrate the equivalence of the EFT approach with the more conventional, factorization-based methods to all logarithmic accuracies and to all orders in perturbation theory. Specific EFT results are shown for the resummation up to next-to-next-to-next …
Effective Field Theories (EFTs) capture effects from heavy dynamics at low energy and represent an essential ingredient in the context of Standard Model (SM) precision tests. This document gathers a number of relevant scenarios for heavy physics beyond the SM and presents explicit expressions for the Wilson coefficients in their low-energy EFT. It includes i) weakly coupled scenarios in which one or a few particles of different spins and quantum numbers interact linearly with the SM and generate EFT effects at tree-level, ii) scenarios where heavy particles interact quadratically whereupon the…
In this paper, we present the computation of the Higgs boson pair production cross section, both inclusive as well as differential on the invariant mass distribution, at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD including effects of new physics beyond the standard model. We parametrize the effects of new physics with the relevant dimension 6 operators in a standard model effective field theory (EFT) approach and examine their phenomenology. The dependence of the NNLO $K$-factor on the EFT couplings is analysed, finding that, while rather flat for a number of EFT coefficients, it can consider…
Higgs boson production in association with a photon ($H$+$γ$) offers a promising channel to test the Higgs boson to photon coupling at various energy scales. Its potential sensitivity to anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson has not been explored with the proton-proton collision data. In this paper, we reinterpret the latest ATLAS $H$+$γ$ resonance search results within the Standard Model effective field theory (EFT) framework, using 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Constraints on the Wilson coefficients of dimension-six EFT…
I review the main features of the effective field theory (EFT) behind scenarios of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, placing particular emphasis on the systematics and the parallels that can be drawn with Chiral Perturbation Theory. The notion of chiral dimensions will be introduced and shown to be the right tool to describe nonlinear expansions. I will also discuss why such an EFT is of interest in phenomenological studies at the LHC. The most important aspect is that the EFT is engineered to recover the Standard Model in a particular limit, and therefore provides a general framework t…
To obtain a first order phase transition requires large new physics corrections to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs potential. This implies that the scale of new physics is relatively low, raising the question whether an effective field theory (EFT) description can be used to analyse the phase transition in a (nearly) model-independent way. We show analytically and numerically that first order phase transitions in perturbative extensions of the SM cannot be described by the SM-EFT. The exception are Higgs-singlet extension with tree-level matching; but even in this case the SM-EFT can only captur…
State-of-the-art predictions for the mass of the lightest MSSM Higgs boson usually involve the resummation of higher-order logarithmic contributions obtained within an effective-field-theory (EFT) approach, often combined with a fixed-order calculation into a hybrid result. For the phenomenologically interesting case of a significant hierarchy between the gluino mass and the masses of the scalar top quarks the predictions suffer from large theoretical uncertainties related to non-decoupling power-enhanced gluino contributions in the EFT results employing the $\overline{\text{DR}}$ renormalisat…
In this work we study the production of two Higgs bosons at the two planned electron positron colliders with energies at the TeV domain, CLIC and ILC, within the context of Effective Field Theories (EFTs) to describe beyond the Standard Model Higgs Physics. We focus first on the case of the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT) and next we compare with the case of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The predictions for double Higgs production in both EFTs are first presented for the most relevant subprocess participating in the total process of our interest, $e^+e^- \to HH ν\bar ν…
We present a calculation of the light neutral CP-even Higgs boson pole mass in the real MSSM which combines state-of-the-art EFT and fixed-order results, including the three-loop fixed-order QCD corrections as well as the resummation of logarithmic terms in the ratio of the weak to the SUSY scale up to fourth logarithmic order. This hybrid calculation should be valid for arbitrary SUSY scales above the weak scale. Comparison to the pure fixed-order and EFT results provides an estimate of their individual validity range.
We consider the phenomenological implications of charged scalar extensions of the SM Higgs sector in addition to EFT couplings of this new state to SM matter. We perform a detailed investigation of modifications of loop-induced decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson, which receives corrections from the propagating charged scalars alongside one-loop EFT operator insertions and demonstrate that the interplay of $H\to γγ$ and $H\to Zγ$ decays can be used to clarify the additional states phenomenology in case a discovery is made in the future. In parallel, EFT interactions of the charged Higgs can lead…
There are two canonical approaches to treating the Standard Model as an Effective Field Theory (EFT): Standard Model EFT (SMEFT), expressed in the electroweak symmetric phase utilizing the Higgs doublet, and Higgs EFT (HEFT), expressed in the broken phase utilizing the physical Higgs boson and an independent set of Goldstone bosons. HEFT encompasses SMEFT, so understanding whether SMEFT is sufficient motivates identifying UV theories that require HEFT as their low energy limit. This distinction is complicated by field redefinitions that obscure the naive differences between the two EFTs. By re…

Projecting measurements of the interactions of the known Standard Model (SM) states into an effective field theory (EFT) framework is an important goal of the LHC physics program. The interpretation of measurements of the properties of the Higgs-like boson in an EFT allows one to consistently study the properties of this state, while the SM is allowed to eventually break down at higher energies. In this review, basic concepts relevant to the construction of such EFTs are reviewed pedagogically. Electroweak precision data is discussed as a historical example of some importance to illustrate cri…
If the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) is of strongly first order due to higher dimensional operators, the scale of new physics generating them is at the TeV scale or below. In this case the effective-field theory (EFT) neglecting operators of dimension higher than six may overlook terms that are relevant for the EWPT analysis. In this article we study the EWPT in the EFT to dimension eight. We estimate the reach of the future gravitational wave observatory LISA for probing the region in which the EWPT is strongly first order and compare it with the capabilities of the Higgs measurements v…
We construct a composite two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) within the context of dilaton effective field theory. This EFT describes the particle spectrum observed in lattice simulations of a near-conformal $SU(3)$ gauge field theory. A second Higgs doublet is naturally accommodated within the EFT, used previously to construct a one-Higgs-doublet model. We explore the interplay of phenomenological and EFT requirements, supplemented by information from numerical lattice studies of the $SU(3)$ gauge theory with eight fundamental (Dirac) fermions. We build a viable model with moderate parameter tunin…
This article is an addendum to Ref.~\cite{Baek:2014jga}. Here, we discuss the invisible Higgs decay width $Γ_{h}^{\rm inv}$ in the Higgs portal vector dark matter (VDM) model in the limit $m_V \rightarrow 0^+$. In the effective field theory (EFT) approach where the VDM mass is attributed to the Stückelberg mechanism, $( Γ_{h}^{\rm inv} )_{\rm EFT}$ is divergent, which is unphysical and puzzling. On the other hand $( Γ_{h}^{\rm inv} )_{\rm UV}$ becomes finite in a UV completion, where the VDM mass is generated by the dark Higgs mechanism. Then we can take the limit $m_V \rightarrow 0^+$ by taki…
We study lepton violating Higgs (HLFV) decays, first from the effective field theory (EFT) point of view, and then analysing the different high-energy realizations of the operators of the EFT, highlighting the most promising models. We argue why two Higgs doublet models can have a $\mathrm{BR}(h\rightarrow τμ)\sim 0.01$, and why this rate is suppressed in all other realizations including vector-like leptons. We further discuss HLFV in the context of neutrino mass models: in most cases it is generated at one loop giving always $\mathrm{BR}(h\rightarrow τμ) < 10^{-4}$ and typically much less, wh…
The Higgs boson is produced at the LHC through gluon fusion at roughly the Standard Model rate. New colored fermions, which can contribute to $gg\rightarrow h$, must have vector-like interactions in order not to be in conflict with the experimentally measured rate. We examine the size of the corrections to single and double Higgs production from heavy vector-like fermions in $SU(2)_L$ singlets and doublets and search for regions of parameter space where double Higgs production is enhanced relative to the Standard Model prediction. We compare production rates and distributions for double Higgs …
