We consider physical properties of a superconductor with a recently proposed type of odd-frequency pairing that exhibits diamagnetic Meissner response ("odd-dia state"). Such a state was suggested in order to address stability issues arising in an odd-frequency superconducting state with paramagnetic Meissner response ("odd-para state"). Assuming the existence of an odd-dia state (due to a proper retarded interaction), we study its coexistence with an odd-para state. The latter is known to be generated as an induced superconducting component in, e.g., singlet superconductor/ferromagnet proximity structures or triplet superconductor/normal metal systems. Calculating the superfluid density of the mixed odd-para/odd-dia state and the Josephson current between the odd-para and odd-dia states, we find that the expressions for the currents in both cases have non-vanishing imaginary contributions and are therefore unphysical. We show that a realization of the odd-dia state implies the absence of a Hamiltonian description of the system, and suggest that there exists no physically realizable perturbation that could give rise to the spontaneous symmetry breaking necessary for an actual realization of the odd-dia superconducting state.
The Meissner effect is one of the defining properties of superconductivity, with a conventional superconductor completely repelling an external magnetic field. In contrast to this diamagnetic behavior, odd-frequency superconducting pairing has often been seen to produce a paramagnetic Meissner effect, which instead makes the superconductor unstable due to the attraction of magnetic field. In this work we study how both even- and odd-frequency superconducting pairing contributes to the Meissner effect in a generic two-orbital superconductor with a tunable odd-frequency pairing component. By div…
Doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is proposed to be a nematic superconductor originating from unusual inter-orbital pairing. We classify all induced superconducting pair correlations in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and discover that intra-orbital odd-frequency pairing dominates over a significant range of frequencies. Moreover, we explore the contributions of even- and odd-frequency pairing to the Meissner effect, including separating intra- and inter-band processes in the response function. Contrary to expectations, and due to inter-band contributions, we find a diamagnetic odd-frequency Meissner effect.
In 1933, Meissner and Ochsenfeld reported the expulsion of magnetic flux, the diamagnetic Meissner effect, from the interior of superconducting lead. This discovery was crucial in formulating the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity. In exotic superconducting systems BCS theory does not strictly apply. A classical example is a superconductor-magnet hybrid system where magnetic ordering breaks time-reversal symmetry of the superconducting condensate and results in the stabilisation of an odd-frequency superconducting state. It has been predicted that under appropriate con…
The odd-frequency superconducting state appears generally in hybrid structures consisting of conventional superconductors and other materials, and features electrons that form temporally non-local Cooper pairs. The quasiclassical theory of superconductivity has been extensively used to model such systems, finding in many cases excellent agreement with experimental measurements. Therefore, it is of interest to study effective models of odd-frequency superconductivity to predict new phenomena associated with this form of unconventional pairing. We establish necessary criteria that the quasiclass…
The parity breaking gives rise to rich superconducting properties through the admixture of even and odd-parity Cooper pairs. A new light has been shed on parity-breaking superconductors by recent observations of nonreciprocal responses such as the nonlinear optical responses and the superconducting diode effect. In this Letter, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocal responses are characterized by a unidirectional correction to the superfluid density, which we call nonreciprocal superfluid density. This correction leads to the nonreciprocal Meissner effect, namely, asymmetric screening of magnet…
In multiband systems, such as iron-based superconductors, the superconducting states with locking and anti-locking of the interband phase differences, are usually considered as mutually exclusive. For example, a dirty two-band system with interband impurity scattering undergoes a sharp crossover between the $s_{\pm}$ state (which favors phase anti locking) and the $s_{++}$ state (which favors phase locking). We discuss here that the situation can be much more complex in the presence of an external field or superconducting currents. In an external applied magnetic field, dirty two-band supercon…
The coupling of a superconductor to a different material often results in a system with unconventional superconducting properties. A conventional superconductor is a perfect diamagnet expelling magnetic fields out of its volume, a phenomenon known as Meissner effect. Here, we show that the simple adsorption of a monolayer of chiral molecules, which are non-magnetic in solution, onto the surface of a conventional superconductor can markedly change its diamagnetic Meissner response. By measuring the internal magnetic field profile in superconducting Nb thin films under an applied transverse fiel…
In several members of the pnictide materials, spin density wave order coexists with superconductivity over a range of dopings and temperature. In this paper we show that odd-frequency superconductivity emerges on the edges of pnictides in such a coexistence phase. In particular, the breaking of spin-rotation symmetry by SDW and translation symmetry by the edge can lead to the development of odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairing on edges of superconducting pnictide samples. In this case, the odd-frequency pairing has even parity components, which are immune to disorder. Our results show tha…
Conventional superconductors respond to external magnetic fields by generating diamagnetic screening currents. However, theoretical work has shown that one can engineer systems where the screening current is paramagnetic, causing them to attract magnetic flux -- a prediction that has recently been experimentally verified. In contrast to previous studies, we show that this effect can be realized in simple superconductor/normal-metal structures with no special properties, using only a simple voltage bias to drive the system out of equilibrium. This is of fundamental interest, since it opens up a…
Strongly correlated systems exhibit a rich phenomenology due to the antagonism of a diversity of ordered phases. The aftermath of this interplay can lead to a coexistence which takes place at a microscopic level, or, a phase separation in which non-overlapping single-order domains extend throughout the material. In most cases it appears experimentally challenging to disentangle the two scenarios, unless, there exist robust and measurable properties particular to only one of the two types of coexistence. This is for instance the case when the type of coexistence decides on the appearance of top…
Odd-frequency superconductivity, originally proposed by Berezinskii in 1974, is an exotic phase of matter in which Cooper pairing between electrons is entirely dynamical in nature. The pair potential is an odd function of frequency, leading to a vanishing static superconducting order parameter and exotic types of pairing seemingly inconsistent with Fermi statistics. Motivated by recent experimental progress in the realization of Majorana zero modes in semiconducting nanowires, we show that odd-frequency superconductivity generically appears in a spin-polarized nanowire coupled to Majorana zero…
Pair density waves, identified by Cooper pairs with finite center-of-mass momentum, have recently been observed in copper oxide based high T$_\textrm{c}$ superconductors (cuprates). A charge density modulation or wave is also ubiquitously found in underdoped cuprates. Within a general mean-field one-band model we show that the coexistence of charge density waves and uniform superconductivity in $d$-wave superconductors like cuprates, generates an odd-frequency spin-singlet pair density wave, in addition to the even-frequency counterparts. The strength of the induced odd-frequency pair density …
The recently discovered APt$_3$P (A=Sr,Ca,La) family of superconductors offers a platform to study frequency dependent superconducting phenomena as the electron-phonon coupling varies from weak to strong. Here we perform ab initio Eliashberg theory calculations to investigate two such phenomena, the occurrence of dip-hump structures in the tunneling spectra and the magnetic field induced coexistence of even and odd frequency superconductivity in these compounds. By calculating the superfluid density, we make predictions for the occurrence of the paramagnetic Meissner effect as a hallmark of od…
In this article we review recent progress in the understanding of multiband superconductivity and its relationship to odd-frequency pairing. We begin our discussion by reviewing the emergence of odd-frequency pairing in a simple two-band model, providing a brief pedagogical overview of the formalism. We then examine several examples of multiband superconducting systems in each case describing, both, the origin of the band degree of freedom and the nature of the odd-frequency pairing. Throughout, we attempt to convey a unified picture of how odd-frequency pairing emerges in these materials and …
Direct evidence of magnetic correlations deep inside the superconducting state of CaFe1.94Co0.06As2
We discuss odd-frequency Cooper pairs appearing in two-band superconductors by solving the Gor'kov equation analytically. We introduce the equal-time $s$-wave pair potentials as realized in MgB$_2$ and iron pnictides. Although the order parameter symmetry is conventional, the band degree of freedom enriches the symmetry variety of pairing correlations. The hybridization and the asymmetry between the two conduction bands induce odd-frequency pairs as a subdominant pairing correlation in the uniform ground state. To study the magnetic response of odd-frequency Cooper pairs, we analyze the Meissn…
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements are performed on the ferromagnetic superconductor EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.8}$P$_{0.2}$)$_{2}$ ($T\rm_{sc}=22.5\,$K) to probe the delicate interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity. A clear signature of large ferromagnetic domains is found below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature $T\rm_{C}$ = 18.5 K. In a small temperature interval of $\sim$ 1.5 K below $T\rm_{C}$, additional SANS signal is observed, of which the indirect Fourier transform reveals characteristic length scales in between $\sim$ 80 nm to $\sim$ 160 nm. These nanometer-…
Understanding the nature of Cooper pairs is essential to describe the properties of superconductors. The original proposal of Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) was based on electrons pairing with same energy and zero center-of-mass momentum. With the advent of new superconductors, different forms of pairing have been discussed. In particular, Cooper pairs with finite center-of-mass momentum have received large interest. Along with such finite-momentum pairs, pairing of electrons at different energies is also central to understanding some superconductors. Here, we investigate the interplay …
Junction systems of odd-frequency (OF) superconductors are investigated based on a mean-field Hamiltonian formalism. One-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice (TCKL) is taken as a concrete example of OF superconductors. Properties of normal and Andreev reflections are examined in a normal metal/superconductor junction. Unlike conventional superconductors, normal reflection is always present due to the normal self energy that necessarily appears in the present OF pairing state. The conductance reflects the difference between repulsive and attractive potentials located at the interface, which is…
We show that vertex corrections to Migdal's theorem in general induce an odd-frequency spin-triplet superconducting order parameter, which coexists with its more commonly known even-frequency spin-singlet counterpart. Fully self-consistent vertex-corrected Eliashberg theory calculations for a two dimensional cuprate model, isotropically coupled to an Einstein phonon, confirm that both superconducting gaps are finite over a wide range of temperatures. The subordinate $d$-wave odd-frequency superconducting gap is found to be one order of magnitude smaller than the primary even-frequency $d$-wave…
This article reviews odd-frequency (odd-w) pairing with focus on superconducting systems. Since Berezinskii introduced the concept of odd frequency order in 1974 it has been viewed as an exotic and rarely occurring in nature. Here, we present a view that the Berezinskii state is in fact a ubiquitous superconducting order that is both non-local and odd in time. It appears under quite general circumstances including in bulk materials, heterostructures and dynamically driven superconducting states. It is therefore important to understand the nature of odd-w pairing. We present the properties of o…
The superconducting order parameter of strontium ruthenate is the center of a lasting puzzle calling for theoretical studies that include the seldom-considered effects of spin-orbit coupling and the frequency-dependence of the order parameters. Here we generalize the frequency-dependent theory of superconductivity mediated by spin and charge fluctuations to include spin-orbit coupling in multi-orbital systems and we characterize the superconducting states using the spin-parity-orbital-time $SPOT$ quantum numbers, group theory, and phase distributions in the complex plane. We derive a pseudospi…
We first show the realization of exceptional points in a non-Hermitian superconducting system based on a conventional superconductor and then demonstrate that, surprisingly, the system hosts odd-frequency pairing, solely generated by the non-Hermiticity. While there is a coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pairs under general conditions, we find that the even-frequency term vanishes at the exceptional degeneracies, leaving only odd-frequency pairing. This exceptional odd-frequency pairing is directly given by the imaginary part of the eigenvalues at the exceptional points and can be measure…
At an interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a conventional superconductor (SC), superconductivity has been predicted to change dramatically and exhibit novel correlations. In particular, the induced superconductivity by an $s$-wave SC in a TI can develop an order parameter with a $p$-wave component. Here we present experimental evidence for an unexpected proximity-induced novel superconducting state in a thin layer of the prototypical TI, Bi$_2$Se$_3$, proximity coupled to Nb. From depth-resolved magnetic field measurements below the superconducting transition temperature of Nb, w…
We investigate odd-frequency superconducting correlations in normal-superconductor (NS) and short superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions with the S region described by the Kitaev model of spinless fermions in one dimension. We demonstrate that, in both the trivial and topological phases, Andreev reflection is responsible for the coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pair amplitudes at interfaces, while normal reflections solely contribute to odd-frequency pairing. At NS interfaces we find that the odd-frequency pair amplitude exhibits large, but finite, values in the topological…
