We study the impurity entanglement entropy $S_e$ in quantum impurity models that feature a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point (QCP) arising from a pseudogap in the conduction-band density of states or from coupling to a bosonic bath. On the local-moment (Kondo-destroyed) side of the QCP, the entanglement entropy contains a critical component that can be related to the order parameter characterizing the quantum phase transition. In Kondo models describing a spin-$\Simp$, $S_e$ assumes its maximal value of $\ln(2\Simp+1)$ at the QCP and throughout the Kondo phase, independent of features such as particle-hole symmetry and under- or over-screening. In Anderson models, $S_e$ is nonuniversal at the QCP, and at particle-hole symmetry, rises monotonically on passage from the local-moment phase to the Kondo phase; breaking this symmetry can lead to a cusp peak in $S_e$ due to a divergent charge susceptibility at the QCP. Implications of these results for quantum critical systems and quantum dots are discussed.
Quantum criticality in certain heavy-fermion metals is believed to go beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. In particular, there is considerable evidence for Kondo destruction: a disappearance of the static Kondo singlet amplitude that results in a sudden reconstruction of Fermi surface across the quantum critical point and an extra critical energy scale. This effect can be analyzed in terms of a dynamical interplay between the Kondo and RKKY interactions. In the Kondo-destroyed phase, a well-defined Kondo resonance is lost, but Kondo singlet correlations remain at nonze…
We consider the SU(N) x SU(kappa N) generalization of the spin-isotropic Bose-Fermi Kondo model in the limit of large N. There are three fixed points corresponding to a multi-channel non-Fermi liquid phase, a local spin-liquid phase, and a Kondo-destroying quantum critical point (QCP). We show that the QCP has strong similarities with its counterpart in the single-channel model, even though the Kondo phase is very different from the latter. We also discuss the evolution of the dynamical scaling properties away from the QCP.
Motivated by the unconventional superconductivity observed in heavy-fermion metals, we investigate pairing susceptibilities near a continuous quantum phase transition of the Kondo-destruction type. We solve two-impurity Bose-Fermi Anderson models with Ising and Heisenberg forms of the interimpurity exchange interaction using continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo and numerical renormalization-group methods. Each model exhibits a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point separating Kondo-screened and local-moment phases. For antiferromagnetic interimpurity exchange interactions, singlet pairing is …
Quantum critical points often arise in metals perched at the border of an antiferromagnetic order. The recent observation of singular and dynamically scaling charge conductivity in an antiferromagnetic quantum critical heavy fermion metal implicates beyond-Landau quantum criticality. Here we study the charge and spin dynamics of a Kondo destruction quantum critical point (QCP), as realized in an SU(2)-symmetric Bose-Fermi Kondo model. We find that the critical exponents and scaling functions of the spin and single-particle responses of the QCP in the SU(2) case are essentially the same as thos…
Considerable efforts have been made in recent years to theoretically understand quantum phase transitions in Kondo lattice systems. A particular focus is on Kondo destruction, which leads to quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. This unconventional quantum criticality has provided an understanding of the unusual dynamical scaling observed experimentally. It has also predicted a sudden jump of the Fermi surface and an extra (Kondo destruction) energy scale, both of which have been verified by systematic experiments. Considerations of Kondo de…
Unconventional quantum criticality in heavy-fermion systems has been extensively analyzed in terms of a critical destruction of the Kondo effect. Motivated by a recent demonstration of quantum criticality in a mixed-valent heavy-fermion system, β-YbAlB4, we study a particle-hole-asymmetric Anderson impurity model with a pseudogapped density of states. We demonstrate Kondo destruction at a mixed-valent quantum critical point, where a collapsing Kondo energy scale is accompanied by a singular charge-fluctuation spectrum. Both spin and charge responses scale with energy over temperature (ω/T) and…
Quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations is playing a central role in elucidating the behavior of strange metals. A prominent case appears in Kondo lattice systems, which have been extensively analysed in terms of an effective Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here, a spin is simultaneously coupled to conduction electron bands and gapless vector bosons that represent magnetic fluctuations. The Bose-Fermi Kondo model features interacting fixed points of Kondo destruction with such properties as dynamical Planckian ($\hbar ω/ k_{\rm B} T$) scaling and loss …
Recent studies of the global phase diagram of quantum-critical heavy-fermion metals prompt consideration of the interplay between the Kondo interactions and quantum fluctuations of the local moments alone. Toward this goal, we study a Bose-Fermi Kondo model (BFKM) with Ising anisotropy in the presence of a local transverse field that generates quantum fluctuations in the local-moment sector. We apply the numerical renormalization-group method to the case of a sub-Ohmic bosonic bath exponent and a constant conduction-electron density of states. Starting in the Kondo phase at zero transverse-fie…
We study the pseudogap Anderson model as a prototype system for critical Kondo destruction. We obtain finite-temperature (T) scaling functions near its quantum critical point, using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method and also considering a dynamical large-N limit. We are able to determine the behavior of the scaling functions in the typically-difficult-to-access quantum-relaxational regime (hbar w < k_B T), and conclude that the relaxation rates for both the spin and single-particle excitations are linear in temperature. We discuss the implications of these results for the quantum cr…
Quantum criticality beyond the Landau paradigm represents a fundamental problem in condensed matter and statistical physics. Heavy fermion systems with multipolar degrees of freedom can play an important role in the search for its universal description. We consider a Kondo lattice model with both spin and quadrupole degrees of freedom, which we show to exhibit an antiferroquadrupolar phase. Using a field theoretical representation of the model, we find that Kondo couplings are exactly marginal in the renormalization group sense in this phase. This contrasts with the relevant nature of the Kond…
In a Kondo lattice, the spin exchange coupling between a local spin and the conduction electrons acquires nonlocal contributions due to conduction electron scattering from surrounding local spins and the subsequent RKKY interaction. It leads to a hitherto unrecognized interference of Kondo screening and the RKKY interaction beyond the Doniach scenario. We develop a renormalization group theory for the RKKY-modified Kondo vertex. The Kondo temperature, $T_K(y)$, is suppressed in a universal way, controlled by the antiferromagnetic RKKY coupling parameter $y$. Complete spin screening ceases to e…
We report results of isothermal magnetotransport and susceptibility measurements at elevated magnetic fields B down to very low temperatures T on high-quality single crystals of the frustrated Kondo-lattice system CePdAl. They reveal a B*(T) line within the paramagnetic part of the phase diagram. This line denotes a thermally broadened 'small'-to-'large' Fermi surface crossover which substantially narrows upon cooling. At B_0* = B*(T=0) = (4.6 +/- 0.1) T, this B*(T) line merges with two other crossover lines, viz. Tp(B) below and T_FL(B) above B_0*. Tp characterizes a frustration-dominated spi…
We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like |ε|^r at the Fermi energy (ε=0) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to |ω|^s. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time qu…
Metallic quantum criticality is a central theme in a variety of strongly correlated systems. Recent experiments have raised the fundamental question of how the charge response can be singular in cases where the Landau framework of quantum criticality allows singularity only in the spin channel. Motivated by this emerging issue, we study the particle-hole-asymmetric regime of a Bose-Fermi Anderson model with power-law forms for both the bosonic bath spectrum and the fermionic band density of states. We realize a particle-hole-asymmetric quantum-critical state where quasiparticles are lost due t…
The numerical renormalization group is used to study quantum entanglement in the Kondo impurity model with a pseudogapped density of states $ρ(\varepsilon)\propto|\varepsilon|^r$ ($r>0$) that vanishes at the Fermi energy $\varepsilon=0$. The model features a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point (QCP) separating a partially screened phase (reached for impurity-band exchange couplings $J>J_c$) from a local-moment phase ($J<J_c$). The impurity contribution $S_e^{imp}$ to the entanglement entropy between a region of radius $R$ around the magnetic impurity and the rest of the host system reveal…
A quantum critical point arises at a continuous transformation between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Studies in antiferromagnetic heavy fermion materials have revealed that quantum criticality has several classes, with an unconventional type that involves a critical destruction of the Kondo entanglement. In order to understand such varieties, it is important to extend the materials basis beyond the usual setting of intermetallic compounds. Here we show that a nickel oxypnictide, CeNiAsO, displays a heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic quantum critical point as a function of either …
SmB6 is a promising candidate material that promises to elucidate the connection between strong correlations and topological electronic states, which is a major challenge in condensed matter physics. The electron correlations are responsible for the development of multiple gaps in SmB6, whose elucidation is sorely needed. Here we do so by studying the evolutions of the gaps and other corresponding behaviors under pressure. Our measurements of the valence, Hall effect and electrical resistivity clearly identify the gap which is associated with the bulk Kondo hybridization and, moreover, uncover…
We show that the local spin measurement which decoheres the localized spin in a Kondo system, suppresses the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance and destroys the Kondo effect. This happens due to elimination of the entanglement between the localized spin and the conduction electrons, and differs essentially from smearing of the resonance by dissipation. Considering decoherence by a spin bath, we predict that the Kondo effect disappears when the Kondo temperature becomes smaller than the coupling with a bath. This effect can be detected in experiments on ``quantum corrals'' or quantum dots doped by impuri…
Heavy fermion metals provide a prototype setting to study quantum criticality. Experimentally, quantum critical points have been identified and studied in a growing list of heavy fermion compounds. Theoretically, Kondo destruction has provided a means to characterize a class of unconventional quantum critical points that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. Among the prominent evidence for such local quantum criticality have been measurements in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. A rapid crossover is observed at finite temperatures in the isothermal field dependence of the Hall coeff…
Antiferromagnetic heavy fermion metals close to their quantum critical points display a richness in their physical properties unanticipated by the traditional approach to quantum criticality, which describes the critical properties solely in terms of fluctuations of the order parameter. This has led to the question as to how the Kondo effect gets destroyed as the system undergoes a phase change. In one approach to the problem, Kondo lattice systems are studied through a self-consistent Bose-Fermi Kondo model within the Extended Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The quantum phase transition of the K…
The appearance of unconventional superconductivity near heavy-fermion quantum critical points (QCPs) motivates investigation of pairing correlations close to a ``beyond Landau'' Kondo-destruction QCP. We focus on a two-Anderson-impurity cluster in which Kondo destruction is induced by a pseudogap in the conduction-electron density of states. Analysis via continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo and the numerical renormalization group reveals a previously unstudied QCP that both displays the critical-local moment fluctuations characteristic of Kondo destruction and leads to a strongly enhanced singl…
Motivated by the mysteries of the heavy fermion quantum critical point, we investigate the competition between Kondo screening and magnetic ordering in the honeycomb Kondo lattice at half filling. We examine the destruction of the Kondo phase by proliferating vortex configurations in the Kondo hybridization order parameter. We find that there are zero modes associated with Kondo vortices. Condensing these vortices can lead to the antiferromagnetic phase.
How ground states of quantum matter transform between one another reveals deep insights into the mechanisms stabilizing them. Correspondingly, quantum phase transitions are explored in numerous materials classes, with heavy fermion compounds being among the most prominent ones. Recent studies in an anisotropic heavy fermion compound have shown that different types of transitions are induced by variations of chemical or external pressure [1-3], raising the question of the extent to which heavy fermion quantum criticality is universal. To make progress, it is essential to broaden both the materi…
The competition between the indirect exchange interaction (IEC) of magnetic impurities in metals and the Kondo effect gives rise to a rich quantum phase diagram, the Doniach Diagram. In disordered metals, both the Kondo temperature and the IEC are widely distributed due to the scattering of the conduction electrons from the impurity potential. Therefore, it is a question of fundamental importance, how this Doniach diagram is modified by the disorder, and if one can still identify separate phases. Recently, it has been investigated the effect of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) correlations…
Recent experimental work has brought the twin issues of the origin of non-Lifshitz-Kosevich scaling in de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) and its precise relation to anomalously broad non-quasiparticle spectral features in "strange" metals, to the forefront. Here, we revisit these issues in the specific context of a "local" quantum critical phase in an extended periodic Anderson model (EPAM). In contrast to the famed Kondo-RKKY scenarios for local quantum criticality, strong local valence fluctuations cause Kondo destruction in the EPAM. We uncover a common underlying element, namely, the Kondo-destruc…
We study entanglement of Kondo clouds in an open triple quantum dots (OTQDs) system based on the dissipaton equation of motion (DEOM) theory. A comprehensive picture of the long-range entanglement of Kondo clouds is sketched by the spectral functions, spin-spin correlation and dot occupancies of OTQDs. We find that for the configuration (N1,N2,N3) = (1, 0, 1), a conduction electrons peak occurs in the spectral function of intermediate QD in Kondo regime. This peak resulting from the overlapping of the two Kondo clouds forming from between the two peripheral QDs and leads, enhances with decreas…
The continuous quantum phase transition and the nature of quantum critical point (QCP) in a modified Kondo lattice model with Ising anisotropic exchange interactions is studied within the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. We investigate the effect of quantum fluctuations on critical Kondo destruction QCP, by probing static and dynamic properties of the magnetic order and the Kondo effect. In particular, we identify that local Kondo physics itself becomes critical at the magnetic phase transition point, providing unbiased evidences for local quantum criticality between two insulat…
We use an estimator of quantum criticality based on the entanglement entropy to discuss the ground state properties of the 1D anisotropic Kondo necklace model. We found that the T=0 phase diagram of the model is described by a critical line separating an antiferromagnetic phase from a Kondo singlet state. Moreover we calculate the conformal anomaly on the critical line and obtained that c tends to 0.5 as the thermodynamic limit is reached. We conclude that these transitions belong to Ising universality class being, therefore, second order transitions instead of infinite order as claimed before…
In quantum critical heavy fermion systems, local moments are coupled to both collective spin fluctuations and conduction electrons. As such, the Bose-Fermi Kondo model, describing the coupling of a local moment to both a bosonic and a fermionic bath, has been of extensive interest. For the model in the presence of SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, questions have been raised about its phase diagram. Here we develop a version of continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method suitable for addressing this issue; this procedure can reach sufficiently low temperatures while preserving the SU(2) s…
We study how the formation of the Kondo compensation cloud influences the dynamical properties of a magnetic impurity that tunnels between two positions in a metal. The Kondo effect dynamically generates a strong tunneling impurity-conduction electron coupling, changes the temperature dependence of the tunneling rate, and may ultimately result in the destruction of the coherent motion of the particle at zero temperature. We find an interesting two-channel Kondo fixed point as well for a vanishing overlap between the electronic states that screen the magnetic impurity. We propose a number of sy…
We consider a triple quantum dot system in a triangular geometry with one of the dots connected to metallic leads. Using Wilson's numerical renormalization group method, we investigate quantum entanglement and its relation to the thermodynamic and transport properties, in the regime where each of the dots is singly occupied on average, but with non-negligible charge fluctuations. It is shown that even in the regime of significant charge fluctuations the formation of the Kondo singlets induces switching between separable and perfectly entangled states. The quantum phase transition between unent…
The Bose-Fermi Kondo model captures the physics of the destruction of Kondo screening, which is of extensive current interest to the understanding of quantum critical heavy fermion metals. There are presently limited theoretical methods to study the finite temperature properties of the Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here we provide some of the consistency checks on the cluster-Monte Carlo method, which we have recently applied to the Ising-anisotropic Bose-Fermi Kondo model. We show that the method correctly captures the scaling properties of the Kondo phase, as well as those on approach to the Kondo…
Recent experiments in quantum critical heavy fermion metals have pushed to the fore the question about whether antiferromagnetic fluctuations can promote both spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconductivity. Here we address the issue through non-perturbative calculations in antiferromagnetically correlated Kondo systems. We identify Kondo-destruction quantum critical points in both the SU(2) symmetric and Ising-anisotropic cluster Bose-Fermi Anderson models. The spin-singlet pairing correlations are significantly enhanced near the quantum critical point in the SU(2) case; however, with adequat…
Competition between the Kondo effect and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in the two-impurity Kondo problem can be phenomenologically described by the Rasul-Schlottmann spin model. We revisit this model from the quantum entanglement perspective by calculating both the inter-impurity entanglement and the local Kondo entanglement, the latter being the entanglement between a local magnetic impurity and its spatially nearby conduction electron. A groundstate phase diagram is derived and a discontinuous breakdown of the local Kondo entanglement is found at the singular point, associated co…
We address the quantum transition of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an easy-axis anisotropy using the extended dynamical mean field theory. We derive results in real frequency using the bosonic numerical renormalization group (bNRG) method and compare them with Quantum Monte Carlo results in Matsubara frequency. The bNRG results show a logarithmic divergence in the critical local spin susceptibility, signaling a destruction of Kondo screening. The T=0 transition is consistent with being second order. The bNRG results also display some subtle features; we identify their o…
We analyze the quantum entanglement between opposite spin projection electrons in the ground state of the Anderson impurity model. In this model, a single level impurity with intralevel repulsion U is tunnel coupled to a free electron gas. The Anderson model presents a strongly correlated many body ground state with mass enhanced quasiparticle excitations. We find, using both analytical and numerical tools, that the quantum entanglement between opposite spin projection electrons is a monotonic universal function of the quasiparticle mass enhancement Z. The mass enhancement, which is used to qu…
Recent studies of heavy-fermion systems with tunable quantum fluctuations have focused on a variety of zero-temperature phase transitions that involve not only the onset of magnetic order but also the destruction of Kondo entanglement. Motivated by these developments, we investigate the effect of enhanced quantum fluctuations induced by a transverse magnetic field in an Ising-anisotropic Kondo lattice model, solved within an extended dynamical mean field theory using the numerical renormalization group. A line of locally critical points describes a direct transition from a Kondo-screened param…
The non-interacting and non-Hermitian, parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric Anderson model exhibits an exceptional point (EP) at a non-Hermitian coupling $g=1$, which remains unrenormalized in the presence of interactions (Lourenco et al, arXiv:1806.03116), where the EP was shown to coincide with the quantum critical point (QCP) for Kondo destruction. In this work, we consider a quantum dot hybridizing with metallic leads having Rashba spin-orbit coupling ($λ$). We show that for a non-Hermitian hybridization, $λ$ can renormalize the exceptional point even in the non-interacting case, stabili…
Metallic quantum criticality often develops in strongly correlated systems with local effective degrees of freedom. In this work, we consider an Anderson lattice model with SU(2) symmetry. The model is treated by the extended dynamical mean-field theory (EDMFT) in combination with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate a continuous quantum phase transition, establish the ensuing quantum critical point to be of a Kondo-destruction type, and determine the anomalous scaling properties. We connect the continuous nature of the transition to a dynamical Kondo effect, which we c…
A bilayer system comprising a Kondo insulator coupled to a simple metal (KI-M) is considered. Employing the framework of dynamical mean field theory, the model system is shown to exhibit a surface of quantum critical points (QCPs), that separates a Kondo screened, Fermi liquid phase from a local moment, Mott insulating phase. The quantum critical nature of these Mott transitions is characterized by the vanishing of (a) the coherence scale on the Fermi liquid side, and (b) the Mott gap on the MI side. In contrast to the usual `large to small' Fermi surface (FS) QCPs in heavy fermion systems, th…
The Anderson impurity model with a density of states $ρ(\varepsilon) \propto |\varepsilon|^r$ containing a power-law pseudogap centered on the Fermi energy ($\varepsilon = 0$) features for $0<r<1$ a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point (QCP) separating Kondo-screened and local-moment phases. The observation of mixed valency in quantum critical $β$-YbAlB$_4$ has prompted study of this model away from particle-hole symmetry. The critical spin response associated with all Kondo destruction QCPs has been shown to be accompanied, for $r=0.6$ and noninteger occupation of the impurity site, by a …
We disentangle all the individual degrees of freedom in the quantum impurity problem to deconstruct the Kondo singlet, both in real and energy space, by studying the contribution of each individual free electron eigenstate. This is a problem of two spins coupled to a bath, where the bath is formed by the remaining conduction electrons. Being a mixed state, we resort to the "concurrence" to quantify entanglement. We identify "projected natural orbitals" that allow us to individualize a single-particle electronic wave function that is responsible of more than $90\%$ of the impurity screening. In…
We investigate entanglement between electrons in serially coupled double quantum dots attached to non interacting leads. In addition to local repulsion we consider the influence of capacitive inter-dot interaction. We show how the competition between extended Kondo and local singlet phases determines the ground state and thereby the entanglement.
The anisotropic Kondo necklace model in 2D and 3D is treated as a genuine model for magnetic to Kondo singlet quantum phase transitions in the heavy fermion (HF) compounds. The variation of the quantum critical point (QCP) with anisotropy parameters has been investigated previously in the zero field case [1]. Here we extend the treatment to finite fields using a generalised bond operator representation including all triplet states. The variation of critical tc with external field H and the associated phase diagram is derived. The influence of anisotropies and the different g-factors for locali…
We study the entanglement of an impurity at one end of a spin chain with a block of spins using negativity as a true measure of entanglement to characterize the unique features of the gapless Kondo regime in the spin chain Kondo model. For this spin chain in the Kondo regime we determine- with a true entanglement measure- the spatial extent of the Kondo screening cloud, we propose an ansatz for its ground state and demonstrate that the impurity spin is indeed maximally entangled with the cloud. To better evidence the peculiarities of the Kondo regime, we carry a parallel analysis of the entang…
We show that, in the gapless Kondo Regime, a single local quench at one end of a Kondo spin chain induces a fast and long lived oscillatory dynamics. This quickly establishes a high quality entanglement between the spins at the opposite ends of the chain. This entanglement is mediated by the Kondo Cloud, attains a constant high value independent of the length for large chains, and shows thermal robustness. In contrast, when the Kondo cloud is absent, e.g. in the gapped dimer regime, only finite size end to end effects can create some entanglement on a much longer time-scale for rather short ch…
Quantum entanglement between an impurity and its environment is expected to be central in quantum impurity problems. We develop a method to compute the entanglement in spin-1/2 impurity problems, based on the entanglement negativity and the boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). Using the method, we study the thermal decay of the entanglement in the multichannel Kondo effects. At zero temperature, the entanglement has the maximal value independent of the number of the screening channels. At low temperature, the entanglement exhibits a power-law thermal decay. The power-law exponent equals two…
In heavy-fermion compounds, the dual character of $f$ electrons underlies their rich and often exotic properties like fragile heavy quasipartilces, variety of magnetic orders and unconventional superconductivity. 5$f$-electron actinide materials provide a rich setting to elucidate the larger and outstanding issue of the competition between magnetic order and Kondo entanglement and, more generally, the interplay among different channels of interactions in correlated electron systems. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we present detailed electronic structure of USb$_2$ an…
The entanglement entropy in Kondo impurity systems is studied analytically using conformal field theory. From the impurity contribution to the scaling corrections of the entanglement entropy we extract information about the screening cloud profile for general non-Fermi-liquid fixed points. By also considering the finite-temperature corrections to scaling of the von Neumann entropy we point out a direct connection between the large-distance screening cloud profile and thermodynamic observables such as the specific heat.
We investigate the entanglement between the spins of two quantum dots that are not connected at once to the same system. Quantum entanglement between localized spins is an essential property for the development of quantum computing and quantum information. It is for this reason that generating and controlling an entangled state between quantum dots received great attention in the later years. In this work, we show that the information on the spin orientation of a quantum dot can be kept, using the Kondo entanglement, in a reservoir of electrons. Then, this information can be transmitted to ano…
The effect of a local Kondo coupling and Hubbard interaction on the topological phase of the one-dimensional topological Kondo insulator (TKI) is numerically investigated using the infinite matrix-product state density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. The groundstate of the TKI is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase protected by inversion symmetry. It is found that on its own, the Hubbard interaction that tends to force fermions into a one-charge per site order is insufficient to destroy the SPT phase. However when the local Kondo Hamiltonian term that favors a topologically tr…
We derive the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) for the single impuity Kondo model. We find two types of hidden quantum entanglement: one comes from a finite-temperature effect on the geometry of the MERA network, and the other represents screening of the impurity by conduction electrons. As the latter starts to dominate the electronic state, the Kondo physics emerges. The present result is a simple and beautiful example of a holographic dual of a boundary conformal field theory.
We propose that real-space properties of the two-impurity Kondo model can be obtained from an effective spin model where two single-impurity Kondo spin chains are joined via an RKKY interaction between the two impurity spins. We then use a DMRG approach, valid in all ranges of parameters, to study its features using two complementary quantum-entanglement measures, the negativity and the von Neumann entropy. This non-perturbative approach enables us to uncover the precise dependence of the spatial extent $ξ_K$ of the Kondo screening cloud with the Kondo and RKKY couplings. Our results reveal an…
