In this paper, we study the stability problem of a stochastic, nonlinear, discrete-time system. We introduce a linear transfer operator-based Lyapunov measure as a new tool for stability verification of stochastic systems. Weaker set-theoretic notion of almost everywhere stochastic stability is introduced and verified, using Lyapunov measure-based stochastic stability theorems. Furthermore, connection between Lyapunov functions, a popular tool for stochastic stability verification, and Lyapunov measures is established. Using the duality property between the linear transfer Perron-Frobenius and Koopman operators, we show the Lyapunov measure and Lyapunov function used for the verification of stochastic stability are dual to each other. Set-oriented numerical methods are proposed for the finite dimensional approximation of the Perron-Frobenius operator; hence, Lyapunov measure is proposed. Stability results in finite dimensional approximation space are also presented. Finite dimensional approximation is shown to introduce further weaker notion of stability referred to as coarse stochastic stability. The results in this paper extend our earlier work on the use of Lyapunov measures for almost everywhere stability verification of deterministic dynamical systems ("Lyapunov Measure for Almost Everywhere Stability", {\it IEEE Trans. on Automatic Control}, Vol. 53, No. 1, Feb. 2008).

Control Lyapunov function is a central tool in stabilization. It generalizes an abstract energy function -- a Lyapunov function -- to the case of controlled systems. It is a known fact that most control Lyapunov functions are non-smooth -- so is the case in non-holonomic systems, like wheeled robots and cars. Frameworks for stabilization using non-smooth control Lyapunov functions exist, like Dini aiming and steepest descent. This work generalizes the related results to the stochastic case. As the groundwork, sampled control scheme is chosen in which control actions are computed at discrete mo…
This paper proposes a line integral Lyapunov function approach to stability analysis and stabilization for Itô stochastic T-S models. Unlike the deterministic case, stability analysis of this model needs the information of Hessian matrix of the line integral Lyapunov function which is related to partial derivatives of the basis functions. By introducing a new method to handle these partial derivatives and using the property of state-dependent matrix with rank one, the stability conditions of the underlying system can be established via a line integral Lyapunov function. These conditions obtain…
This paper is concerned with relationships of Lyapunov exponents with sensitivity and stability for non-autonomous discrete systems. Some new concepts are introduced for non-autonomous discrete systems, including Lyapunov exponents, strong sensitivity at a point and in a set, Lyapunov stability, and exponential asymptotical stability. It is shown that the positive Lyapunov exponent at a point implies strong sensitivity for a class of non-autonomous discrete systems. Furthermore, the uniformly positive Lyapunov exponents in a totally invariant set imply strong sensitivity in this set under cert…
We address the classic problem of stability and asymptotic stability in the sense of Lyapunov of the equilibrium point of autonomic differential equations using discrete approach. This new approach includes a consideration of a family of hypersurfaces instead of the Lyapunov functions, and conditions on the right part of the differential equation instead of conditions on a Lyapunov function along trajectories of the equation.
Stability and safety are crucial in safety-critical control of dynamical systems. The reach-avoid-stay objectives for deterministic dynamical systems can be effectively handled by formal methods as well as Lyapunov methods with soundness and approximate completeness guarantees. However, for continuous-time stochastic dynamical systems, probabilistic reach-avoid-stay problems are viewed as challenging tasks. Motivated by the recent surge of applications in characterizing safety-critical properties using Lyapunov-barrier functions, we aim to provide a stochastic version for the probabilistic rea…
This paper adds to the discussion about theoretical aspects of particle swarm stability by proposing to employ stochastic Lyapunov functions and to determine the convergence set by quantifier elimination. We present a computational procedure and show that this approach leads to reevaluation and extension of previously know stability regions for PSO using a Lyapunov approach under stagnation assumptions.
In this work, we establish different control design approaches for discrete-time systems, which build upon the notion of finite-step control Lyapunov functions (fs-CLFs). The design approaches are formulated as optimization problems and solved in a model predictive control (MPC) fashion. In particular, we establish contractive multi-step MPC with and without reoptimization and compare it to classic MPC. The idea behind these approaches is to use the fs-CLF as running cost. These new design approaches are particularly relevant in situations where information exchange between plant and controlle…
We consider $\ell$-Volterra quadratic stochastic operators defined on $(m-1)$-dimensional simplex, where $\ell\in\{0,1,...,m\}$. Under some conditions on coefficients of such operators we describe Lyapunov functions and apply them to obtain upper estimates for the set of $ω$- limit points of trajectories. We describe a set of fixed points of $\ell$-Volterra operators.
We revisit the canonical continuous-time and discrete-time matrix algebraic and matrix differential equations that play a central role in Lyapunov based stability arguments. The goal is to generalize and extend these types of equations and subsequent analysis to dynamical systems on domains other than $\R$ or $\Z$, e.g. nonuniform discrete domains or domains consisting of a mixture of discrete and continuous components. We compare and contrast the standard theory with the theory in this general case.
This paper focuses on the fractional difference of Lyapunov functions related to Riemann-Liouville, Caputo and Grunwald-Letnikov definitions. A new way of building Lyapunov functions is introduced and then five inequalities are derived for each definition. With the help of the developed inequalities, the sufficient conditions can be obtained to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the nabla discrete fractional order nonlinear systems. Finally, three illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed theoretical results.
We establish (i) stability of Lyapunov exponents and (ii) convergence in probability of Oseledets spaces for semi-invertible matrix cocycles, subjected to small random perturbations. The first part extends results of Ledrappier and Young to the semi-invertible setting. The second part relies on the study of evolution of subspaces in the Grassmannian.
Stochastic dynamical systems are fundamental in state estimation, system identification and control. System models are often provided in continuous time, while a major part of the applied theory is developed for discrete-time systems. Discretization of continuous-time models is hence fundamental. We present a novel algorithm using a combination of Lyapunov equations and analytical solutions, enabling efficient implementation in software. The proposed method circumvents numerical problems exhibited by standard algorithms in the literature. Both theoretical and simulation results are provided.
We present a stability analysis framework for the general class of discrete-time linear switching systems for which the switching sequences belong to a regular language. They admit arbitrary switching systems as special cases. Using recent results of X. Dai on the asymptotic growth rate of such systems, we introduce the concept of multinorm as an algebraic tool for stability analysis. We conjugate this tool with two families of multiple quadratic Lyapunov functions, parameterized by an integer T >= 1, and obtain converse Lyapunov Theorems for each. Lyapunov functions of the first family associ…
We put forward a new method for obtaining quantitative lower bounds on the top Lyapunov exponent of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Our method combines (i) an (apparently new) identity connecting the top Lyapunov exponent to a Fisher information-like functional of the stationary density of the Markov process tracking tangent directions with (ii) a novel, quantitative version of Hörmander's hypoelliptic regularity theory in an $L^1$ framework which estimates this (degenerate) Fisher information from below by a $W^{s,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ Sobolev norm. This method is applicable to a wide …
We study asymptotic stability of continuous-time systems with mode-dependent guaranteed dwell time. These systems are reformulated as special cases of a general class of mixed (discrete-continuous) linear switching systems on graphs, in which some modes correspond to discrete actions and some others correspond to continuous-time evolutions. Each discrete action has its own positive weight which accounts for its time-duration. We develop a theory of stability for the mixed systems; in particular, we prove the existence of an invariant Lyapunov norm for mixed systems on graphs and study its stru…
Two different types of perturbations of the Lorenz 63 dynamical system for Rayleigh-Benard convection by multiplicative noise -- called stochastic advection by Lie transport (SALT) noise and fluctuation-dissipation (FD) noise -- are found to produce qualitatively different effects, possibly because the total phase-space volume contraction rates are different. In the process of making this comparison between effects of SALT and FD noise on the Lorenz 63 system, a stochastic version of a robust deterministic numerical algorithm for obtaining the individual numerical Lyapunov exponents was develo…
In this article, we review our recently introduced methods for obtaining strictly positive lower bounds on the top Lyapunov exponent of high-dimensional, stochastic differential equations such as the weakly-damped Lorenz-96 (L96) model or Galerkin truncations of the 2d Navier-Stokes equations. This hallmark of chaos has long been observed in these models, however, no mathematical proof had been made for either deterministic or stochastic forcing. The method we proposed combines (A) a new identity connecting the Lyapunov exponents to a Fisher information of the stationary measure of the Markov …
The paper studies numerical methods that preserve a Lyapunov function of a dynamical system, i.e. numerical approximations whose energy decreases, just like in the original differential equation. With this aim, a discrete gradient method is implemented for numerical integration of a system of ordinary differential equations. In principle, this procedure yields first order methods, but the analysis paves the way to the design of higher-order methods. As a case in point, the proposed method is applied to the Duffing equation without external forcing, considering that in this case, preserving the…
In this paper we discuss Stochastic Differential-Algebraic Equations (SDAEs) and the asymptotic stability assessment for such systems via Lyapunov exponents (LEs). We focus on index-one SDAEs and their reformulation as ordinary stochastic differential equation (SDE). Via ergodic theory it is then feasible to analyze the LEs via the random dynamical system generated by the underlying SDE. Once the existence of well-defined LEs is guaranteed, we proceed to the use of numerical simulation techniques to determine the LEs numerically. Discrete and continuous $QR$ decomposition-based numerical metho…
Quantitative estimates for the top Lyapunov exponents for systems of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations are proven. The treatment includes reaction potentials with degenerate minima. The proof relies on an asymptotic expansion of the invariant measure, with careful control on the resulting error terms. As a consequence of these estimates, synchronisation by noise is deduced for systems of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations for the first time.
In this paper we introduce the fractional-order variant of a Gompertz-like discrete system. The chaotic behavior is suppressed with an impulsive control algorithm. The numerical integration and the Lyapunov exponent are obtained by means of the discrete fractional calculus. To verify numerically the obtained results, beside the Lyapunov exponent, the tools offered by the 0-1 test are used.
In this paper, we discuss the relationships between stability and almost periodicity for solutions of stochastic differential equations. Our essential idea is to get stability of solutions or systems by some inherited properties of Lyapunov functions. Under suitable conditions besides Lyapunov functions, we obtain the existence of almost periodic solutions in distribution.

Three similar convergence notions are considered. Two of them are the long established notions of convergent dynamics and incremental stability. The other is the more recent notion of contraction analysis. All three convergence notions require that all solutions of a system converge to each other. In this paper, we investigate the differences between these convergence properties for discrete-time, time-varying nonlinear systems by comparing the properties in pairs and using examples. We also demonstrate a time-varying smooth Lyapunov function characterization for each of these convergence noti…
In this paper we investigate some stochastic models for tumor-immune systems. To describe these models, we used a Wiener process, as the noise has a stabilization effect. Their dynamics are studied in terms of stochastic stability in the equilibrium points, by constructing the Lyapunov exponent, depending on the parameters that describe the model. Stochastic stability was also proved by constructing a Lyapunov function. We have studied and and analyzed a Kuznetsov-Taylor like stochastic model and a Bell stochastic model for tumor-immune systems. These stochastic models are studied from stabili…
In this paper we investigate a stochastic model for an economic game. To describe this model we have used a Wiener process, as the noise has a stabilization effect. The dynamics are studied in terms of stochastic stability in the stationary state, by constructing the Lyapunov exponent, depending on the parameters that describe the model. Also, the Lyapunov function is determined in order to analyze the mean square stability. The numerical simulation that we did justifies the theoretical results.
We first study the discrete Schrödinger equations with analytic potentials given by a class of transformations. It is shown that if the coupling number is large, then its logarithm equals approximately to the Lyapunov exponents. When the transformation becomes the skew-shift, we prove that the Lyapunov exponent is week Hölder continuous, and the spectrum satisfies Anderson Localization and contains large intervals. Moreover, all of these conclusions are non-perturbative.
For a dynamical system, it is known that the existence of a Lyapunov-type density function, called Lyapunov density or Rantzer's density function, implies convergence of Lebesgue almost all solutions to an equilibrium. Using the duality between Frobenius-Perron and Koopmann operators, we generalize this result from equilibrium to invariant sets, both for continuous- and discrete-time. Furthermore, some redundant assumptions that exist in the literature of almost everywhere stability for discrete-time, such as the local stability of the attractor and the compactness of the state space, has been…
We characterize synchronization phenomenon in discrete-time, discrete-state random dynamical systems, with random and probabilistic Boolean networks as particular examples. In terms of multiplicative ergodic properties of the induced linear cocycle, we show such a random dynamical system with finite state synchronizes if and only if the Lyapunov exponent $0$ has simple multiplicity. For the case of countable state space, characterization of synchronization is provided in terms of the spectral subspace corresponding to the Lyapunov exponent $-\infty$. In addition, for both cases of finite and c…
We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are generated by sampling along the orbits of a general hyperbolic transformation. Specifically, we show that if the sampling function is a non-constant Hölder continuous function defined on a subshift of finite type with an ergodic measure admitting a local product structure and a fixed point, then the Lyapunov exponent is positive away from a discrete set of energies. Moreover, for sampling functions in a residual subset of the space of Hölder continuous functions, the Lyapunov exponent is positive everywhere. If we …
