Despite of the success of the slave-boson theory in capturing qualitative physics of high-temperature superconductors like cuprates, it fails to reproduce the correct temperature-dependent behavior of superfluid density, let alone the independence of the linear temperature term on doping in the underdoped regimes of hole-doped cuprate, a common experimental observation in different cuprates. It remains puzzling up to now in spite of intensive theoretical efforts. For electron-doped case, even qualitative treatment is not reported at present time. Here we revisit these problems and provide an alternative superfluid density formulation by using the London relation instead of employing the paramagnetic current-current correlation function. The obtained formula, on the one hand, provides the correct temperature-dependent behavior of the superfluid density in the whole temperature regime, on the other hand, makes the doping dependence of the linear temperature term substantially weaken and a possible interpretation for its independence on doping is proposed. As an application, electron-doped cuprate is studied, whose result qualitatively agrees with existing experiments and successfully explains the origin of $d$- to anisotropic $s$-wave transition across the optimal doping. Our result remedies some failures of the slave-boson theory as employed to calculate superfluid density in cuprates and may be useful in the understanding of the related physics in other strongly correlated systems, e.g. Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$$\cdot$yH$_{2}$O and certain iron-based superconductors with dominating local magnetic exchange interaction.
Based on an improved U(1) slave-boson approach to the t-J Hamiltonian, we invest igate a relationship between the superfluid weight $n_s/m^*$(the superconducting charge carrier density/the effective mass of the charge carrier) and the superc onducting temperature $T_c$. From the present study we find a linear increase of $n_s/m^*$ with $T_c$ with th e doping concentration in the underdoped region, a saturation around the optimal doping and a decrease in both $n_s/m^*$ and $T_c$ in the overdoped region. Such a trend of the `boomerang' shaped locus in $n_s/m^*$ vs. $T_c$ with increas ing doping …
We study the stability of the spin gap phase in the U(1) slave-boson theory of the t-J model in connection to the underdoped cuprates. We approach the spin gap phase from the superconducting state and consider the quantum phase transition of the slave-bosons at zero temperature by introducing vortices in the boson superfluid. At finite temperatures, the properties of the bosons are different from those of the strange metal phase and lead to modified gauge field fluctuations. As a result, the spin gap phase can be stabilized in the quantum critical and quantum disordered regime of the boson sys…
Based on an improved SU(2) slave-boson approach to the t-J Hamiltonian, we derive a phase diagram of high $T_c$ cuprates which displays both the superconducting and pseudogap phases in the plane of temperature vs. hole doping rate. It is shown that the inclusion of phase fluctuations in the order parameters results in a closer agreement with the observed superconducting temperature(bose condensation line) of an arch shape as a function of hole doping rate.
We evaluate the doping dependence of the quasiparticle current and low temperature superfluid density in two slave-particle theories of the tt't''J model -- the slave-boson theory and doped-carrier theory. In the slave-boson theory, the nodal quasiparticle current renormalization factor $α$ vanishes proportionally to the zero temperature superfluid density $ρ_S(0)$; however, we find that away from the $ρ_S(0) \to 0$ limit $α$ displays a much weaker doping dependence than $ρ_S(0)$. A similar conclusion applies to the doped-carrier theory, which differentiates the nodal and antinodal regions of …
In this paper we generalize slave-boson mean-field theory for $t-J$ model to the time-dependent regime, and derive transport equations for $t-J$ model, both in the normal and superconducting states. By eliminating the boson and constraint fields exactly in the equations of motion we obtain a set of transport equations for fermions which have the same form as Landau transport equations for normal Fermi liquid and Fermi liquid superconductor, respectively with all Landau parameters explicity given. Our theory can be viewed as a refined version of U(1) Gauge theory where all lattice effects are r…
We study the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model both at half-filling and away from half-filling using a slave-boson mean-field approach at zero temperature. We obtain a phase diagram at half-filling and discuss its connection to recent results from quantum Monte Carlo, slave-rotor, and $Z_2$ mean-field studies. In particular, we find a small window in parameter space where a spin liquid phase with gapped spin and charge excitations reside. Upon doping, we show the spin liquid state becomes a superconducting state by explicitly calculating the singlet pairing order parameters. Interestingly, we find an "o…
We investigate a possibility of holon pairing for bose condensation based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation obtained from the use of the t-J Hamiltonians of both t he U(1) and SU(2) slave-boson symmetries. It is shown that the vertex function contributed from ladder diagram series involving holon-holon scattering channel in the Bethe-Salpeter equation leads to a singular behavior at a critical temperature at each hole doping concentration, showing the instability of the normal state against holon pairing. We find that the holon pairing instability occurs only in a limited range of hole doping, by…
The Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson scheme is used to allow for an unrestricted variation of the bosonic and fermionic fields on the saddle-point level. Various inhomogeneous solutions, such as spin polarons and domain walls are discussed within the two-dimensional Hubbard model and compared with results of unrestricted Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations. We find that the present approach drastically reduces the polarization of these states and leads to increased delocalized wave functions as compared to the HF model. The interaction between two spin polarons turns out to be attractive over a wide…
Fermionizing the charge sector and bosonizing the spin part in the SU(2) slave-boson theory, we derive an effective field theory for dynamics of doped holes in the antiferromagnetically correlated spin background, where spin fluctuations are described by an SO(5) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) theory while dynamics of doped holes is characterized by QED$_{3}$ with a chemical potential term. An important feature of our effective field theory is the coupling term between valance bond fluctuations and doped holes. Considering that valance bond fluctuations are deeply related with monopole excitations o…
The evolution of the so-called `41meV resonance' in the magnetic response of YBCO cuprates is studied with slave-boson theory for the t-t'-J-model. The resonance appears as a collective spin fluctuation in the d-wave superconducting (SC) state. It is undamped at optimal doping due to a threshold in the excitation energies of particle--hole pairs with relative wave vector (pi,pi). When hole filling is reduced, the resonance moves to lower energies and broadens. Below the resonance energy we find a crossover to an incommensurate response in agreement with a recent experiment on YBa_2CU_3O_6.6. W…
We extend the rotationally invariant formulation of the slave-boson method to superconducting states. This generalization, building on the recent work by Lechermann et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 76}, 155102 (2007)], allows to study superconductivity in strongly correlated systems. We apply the formalism to a specific case of strongly correlated superconductivity, as that found in a multi-orbital Hubbard model for alkali-doped fullerides, where the superconducting pairing has phonic origin, yet it has been shown to be favored by strong correlation owing to the symmetry of the interaction. The metho…
An alternative formalism that does not require the assumption of the deconfinement phase of a U(1) gauge field is proposed for the slave particle mean field theory. Starting form the spin-fermion model, a spinon field, which is either fermion or boson, is introduced to represent the localized spin moment. We find a d-wave superconductive state in the mean field theory in the case of the fermion representation of the localized spin moment that corresponds to the slave boson mean field theory of the t-J model, whereas the d-wave superconductive state is absent in case of the Schwinger boson repr…
In order to obtain a reasonable phase diagram involving hole-pair condensation for hole-doped cuprate systems, we propose a modified t-J Hamiltonian in which a Coulomb repulsion term between nearest neighbor holes is considered. We show from the investigation of free energy that holon pair condensation can occur as a result of symmetry breaking. In addition, we introduce a possibility of supersymmetry condition at $T=0K$ in the intermediate region between the antiferromagnetic phase and the superconducting phase.
We develop an efficient approach for computing two-particle response functions and interaction vertices for multiorbital strongly correlated systems based on fluctuation around rotationally-invariant slave-boson saddle-point. The method is applied to the degenerate three-orbital Hubbard-Kanamori model for investigating the origin of the s-wave orbital antisymmetric spin-triplet superconductivity in the Hund's metal regime, previously found in the dynamical mean-field theory studies. By computing the pairing interaction considering the particle-particle and the particle-hole scattering channels…
Slave boson mean-field approximation is carried out analytically for weakly doped CuO_2 conduction planes, characterized by Cu-O charge transfer energy Δ_{pd}, Cu-O hopping t_0, O-O hopping t' and repulsion U_d between holes on Cu site taken as infinite. At zero doping δ, finite negative t',|t'|<t_0/2, expands the range of stability of the covalent, conducting state on the expense of the insulating state which, however, remains stable at larger Δ_{pd}. For sufficiently large Δ_{pd} the renormalized charge transfer energy saturates at 4|t'| instead of decreasing to zero, as at t'=0 case. In con…
We investigate the phase diagram of phase separation for the hole-doped two dimensional system of antiferromagnetically correlated electrons based on the U(1) slave-boson functional integral approach to the t-J model. We show that the phase separation occurs for all values of J/t, that is, whether $0 < J/t < 1$ or $J/t \geq 1$ with J, the Heisenberg coupling constant and t, the hopping strength. This is consistent with other numerical studies of hole-doped two dimensional antiferromagnets. The phase separation in the physically interesting J region, $0 < J/t \lesssim 0.4$ is examined by introd…
The $t-J$ Hamiltonian is studied in a mean-field approximation by taking into account antiferromagnetic and d-wave pairing correlations. Considering the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the weaknesses of a mean-field approximation and the limitation of the $t-J$ model near half-filling, we give a new interpretation to the slave boson mean-field theory of the $t-J$ model. We argue that due to phase coherence-breaking antiferromagnetic fluctuations and quantum fluctuations, superconducting long-range order does not appear strictly in two dimensions. $T_{c}$ resulting from interlayer p…
We show that the transformation properties of the mean field slave boson/fermion order parameters under an action of the global SU(2) group impose certain restrictions on their applications to describe the phase diagram of the t-J model.
We propose one possible mechanism for deconfinement based on an SU(2) slave-boson theory. Resorting to an effective field theory approach, we show that introduction of an isospin interaction potential gives rise to a fermion zero mode in an instanton-hedgehog configuration. As a result, meron-type vortices are allowed. We demonstrate how emergence of such vortices results in the doping-independent decreasing ratio of superfluid weight.
The operator constraint $f_{i\uparrow}^\dagger f_{i\uparrow} + f_{i\downarrow}^\dagger f_{i\downarrow} + b^\dagger_{i} b_{i}= 1$ in t-J model of High-T$_c$ superconductivity is considered. It is shown that the constraint can be resolved by introdusing a non-associative operator. In this case the constraint is an antiassociative generating relation of a new algebra. Similar constraint is offered for splitting the gluon.
The slave boson mean-field studies of the ground state of the Hubbard model with correlated hopping were performed. The approach qualitatively recovers the exact results for the case of the hopping integral t equal to the correlated hopping integral X. The phase diagram for the strongly correlated state with only singly occupied sites, the weakly correlated state, where single and double occupation is allowed, and for the superconducting state, was determined for any values of X and any electron concentration n. At the half-filled band (n=1) a direct transition from the superconductor to the M…
An improved version of SU(2) slave-boson approach is applied to study the in-plane optical conductivity of the two dimensional systems of high Tc cuprates. We investigate the role of fluctuations of both the phase and amplitude of order parameters on the (Drude) peak-dip-hump structure in the in-plane conductivity as a function of hole doping concentration and temperature. The mid-infrared(MIR) hump in the in-plane optical conductivity is shown to originate from the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations of short range(the amplitude fluctuations of spin singlet pairing order parameters), which is…
The U(1) holon-pair boson theory of Lee and Salk(Phys. Rev. B 64, 052501 (2001)) is applied to investigate the quantum scaling behavior of optical conductivity in the two dimensional systems of strongly correlated electrons. We examine the role of both the gauge field fluctuations and spin pair excitations on the w/T scaling behavior of the optical conductivity. It is shown that the gauge field fluctuations but not the spin pair excitations are responsible for the scaling behavior in the low frequency region w/T <<1. Importance for the contribution of the nodal spinons to the Drude peak is dis…
A preformed-pair model was considered. The quantum disordered phase of the d-wave superconducting state was obtained by turning on an on-site repulsion. The low energy effective theory of the quantum disordered phase was derived, which was found to be qualitatively equivalent to the low energy effective theory of the SU(2) slave-boson theory in the staggered-flux phase. Many physical properties of the disordered phase at low energies were obtained, such as the Mott insulator property at zero doping, spin gap and low superfluid density at low doping.
To supplement our recent brief report on the theory of holon-pair boson approach to the t-J Hamiltonian [S.-S. Lee and Sung-Ho Suck Salk, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 64}, 052501(2001)], in this paper we present a full exposure to the theory, detailed physical implications and predicted various physical properties of high $T_c$ cuprates. We discuss the significance of coupling (interplay) between the spin and charge degrees of freedom in the Heisenberg interaction term of the t-J Hamiltonian. We discuss its importance in causing the arch-shaped superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the pseudog…
Motivated by recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments up to a high-energy region for La-based cuprates, we compute (q,omega) maps of the imaginary part of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility chi(q,omega) in the slave-boson mean-field approximation to the two-dimensional t-J model. While the strong spectral weight appears at incommensurate positions, namely at q neq Q =(pi,pi), for low energy, the incommensurate signals disperse with increasing omega and finally merge into a commensurate signal at a particular energy omega=omega_Q. These features are seen in both the d-wave pairing sta…
We investigate the Josephson coupling between two superconductors mediated through an infinite U Anderson impurity, adapting a variational wavefunction approach which has proved successful for the Kondo model. Unlike the Kondo problem, however, a crossing of singlet and doublet state energies may be produced by varying the ratio of Kondo energy to superconducting gap, in agreement with recent work of Clerk and Ambegaokar. We construct the phase diagram for the junction and discuss properties of different phases. In addition, we find the singlet and doublet state energies within a slave boson m…
Here we have developed a FLEX+DMFT formalism, where the symmetry properties of the system are incorporated by constructing a SO(4) generalization of the conventional fluctuation-exchange approximation (FLEX) coupled self-consistently to the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Along with this line, we emphasize that the SO(4) symmetry is the lowest group-symmetry that enables us to investigate superconductivity and antiferromagnetism on an equal footing. We have imposed this by decomposing the electron operator into auxiliary fermionic and slave-boson constituents that respect SU(2)$_{\rm spin}…
The Gutzwiller projection is shown to induce nontrivial correlation between the spinon and the holon in the slave Boson theory of the $t-J$ model. We find this correlation is responsible some subtle differences between the slave Boson mean field theory and the Gutzwiller projected wave function(GWF), among which the particle-hole asymmetry in the quasiparticle weight calculated from the GWF is a particular example.
We perform a comprehensive analysis of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility χ(q,ω) in the slave-boson mean-field scheme of the bilayer t-J model. In the d-wave pairing state, the strongest magnetic spectral weight appears at q=Q=(pi,pi) and ω=ω_{Q}^{res}, and spreads into a diamond-shaped shell around Q in q space for ω<ω_{Q}^{res}. This weight is due to a collective mode, namely a particle-hole bound state, which has a downward ωversus q dispersion around Q. Within the high intensity shell, the incommensurate (IC) signals at q=(pi,pi\pm 2piη) and (pi\pm 2piη,pi) tend to be stronger than the …
We introduce a strongly correlated mean-field theory of the ionic Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with alternating stripes of site energy using Barnes-Coleman slave bosons. We study the paramagnetic phases of this theory at three quarters filling, where it is a model of Na_0.5CoO_2, Rb_0.5CoO_2, and K_0.5CoO_2. This theory has two bands of fermionic quasi-particles: one of which is filled or nearly filled and hence weakly correlated; the other is half-filled or nearly half-filled and hence strongly correlated. Further results depend strongly on the sign of the hopping integral, t. The …
Recently, we have elucidated the physics of electron fractionalization in strongly interacting electron systems using a $Z_2$ gauge theory formulation. Here we discuss the connection with the earlier U(1) gauge theory approaches based on the slave boson mean field theory. In particular, we identify the relationship between the holons and Spinons of the slave-boson theory and the true physical excitations of the fractionalized phases that are readily described in the $Z_2$ approach.
In this paper we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ materials at different band fillings utilizing the multi-orbital Kotliar-Ruckenstein's slave-boson mean field approach. We find that at three-quarter filling, corresponding to KFe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, the ground state is a paramagnetic bad metal. Through band renormalization analysis and comparison with the angle-resolved photoemission spectra data, we identify that KFe$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ is also an intermediate correlated system, similar to iron-pnictide systems. At two-third filling, corresponding to the Fe…
We study the superfluid-insulator transitions of bosons on the Kagome lattice at incommensurate filling factors f=1/2 and 2/3 using a duality analysis. We find that at f=1/2 the bosons will always be in a superfluid phase and demonstrate that the T_3 symmetry of the dual (dice) lattice, which results in dynamic localization of vortices due to the Aharanov-Bohm caging effect, is at the heart of this phenomenon. In contrast, for f=2/3, we find that the bosons exhibit a quantum phase transition between superfluid and translational symmetry broken Mott insulating phases. We discuss the possible br…
We analyze the finite-temperature phase diagram of the boson-fermion-Hubbard model with Feshbach converting interaction, using the coherent-state path-integral method. We show that depending on the position of the bosonic band, this type of interaction, even if weak, can drive the system into the resonant superfluid phase in the strong bosonic interaction limit. It turns out that this phase can exist for an arbitrary number of fermions (i.e., fermionic concentration between 0 and 2) but with the bosonic particle number very close to an integer value. We point out that the standard time-of-flig…
The criteria for bosonization of Cooper pairs and novel Bose-liquid superconductivity and superfluidity in high-$T_c$ cuprates and other pseudogap matters are formulated by using the uncertainty principle and the boson mean field theory. We argue that the BCS-type s- or d-wave superconductivity occurring in the fermionic limit of Cooper pairs (which exist in ordinary metals and heavily overdoped cuprates with large Fermi energies) is not characteristic of underdoped to overdoped cuprates with low Fermi energies. The superconducting order parameter in high-$T_c$ cuprates and other pseudogap mat…
Using an effective field theory we study the low-lying bosonic excitations and their couplings to phonons at ultrasonic frequencies in superfluid $^3$He-B under strong confinement. We show that confinement induces a rich spectrum of low-lying bosons, including surface-bound bosonic states, as well as fine structure of long-lived massive bosons. Under sufficiently strong confinement we find a dynamical instability of the $^3$He-B film: the frequency of the surface-bound boson softens at finite wavevector, then develops a pole in the upper half of the complex frequency plane, signalling a dynami…
We study the phase diagram of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice near a Feshbach resonance. Depending on the boson density, the strength of the optical lattice potential and the detuning from resonance, the ground state can be a Mott insulator, a superfluid phase with both an atomic and a molecular condensate, or a superfluid phase with only a molecular condensate. Mott insulator to superfluid transitions can be induced either by decreasing the strength of the optical lattice potential or by varying the detuning from the Feshbach resonance. Quite generally, we find that for a commensurate …
We explore novel features of a nonrelativistic fermionic superfluid in which the pairing interaction includes a contribution from the exchange of a dynamical bosonic mode. We show that the dynamical boson exchange (DBE), which causes a retarded pairing interaction and thus violates the Galilean invariance of the fermion sector, generically leads to a quantum reduction of the superfluid density and hence a nonzero normal fraction even at zero temperature. For spin-singlet pairing, the DBE also leads to a nonvanishing spin susceptibility at zero temperature, providing a mechanism for the coexist…
We show that the dynamics of cold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice produced by a bichromatic light-shift potential is described by a Bose-Hubbard model with an additional effective staggered magnetic field. In addition to the known uniform superfluid and Mott insulating phases, the zero-temperature phase diagram exhibits a novel kind of finite-momentum superfluid phase, characterized by a quantized staggered rotational flux. An extension for fermionic atoms leads to an anisotropic Dirac spectrum, which is relevant to graphene and high-$T_c$ superconductors.
