We compare two existing approaches to calculating the decay of molecular quarkonium states to conventional quarkonia in effective field theory, using $X(3872) \to χ_{cJ} π^0$ as an example. In one approach the decay of the molecular quarkonium proceeds through a triangle diagram with charmed mesons in the loop. We argue this approach predicts excessively large rates for $Γ[X(3872) \to χ_{cJ}π^0]$ unless both charged and neutral mesons are included and a cancellation between these contributions is arranged to suppress the decay rates. This cancellation occurs naturally if the $X(3872)$ is primarily in the $I=0$ $D \bar{D}^{*} +c.c.$ scattering channel. The factorization approach to molecular decays calculates the rates in terms of tree-level transitions for the $D$ mesons in the $X(3872)$ to the final state, multiplied by unknown matrix elements. We show that this approach is equivalent to hadronic loops approach if the cutoff on the loop integrations is taken to be a few hundred MeV or smaller, as is appropriate when the charged $D$ mesons have been integrated out of XEFT.
Effective field theories (EFT) are commonly used to parameterize effects of BSM physics in vector boson scattering (VBS). For Wilson coefficients which are large enough to produce presently observable effects, the validity range of the EFT represents only a fraction of the energy range covered by the LHC, however. In order to shed light on possible extrapolations into the high energy region, a class of UV-complete toy models, with extra SU(2) multiplets of scalars or of fermions with vector-like weak couplings, is considered. By calculating the Wilson coefficients up to energy-dimension eight,…
There are now two single measurements of precision observables that have major anomalies in the Standard Model: the recent CDF measurement of the $W$ mass shows a $7σ$ deviation and the Muon $g-2$ experiment at FNAL confirmed a long-standing anomaly, implying a $4.2 σ$ deviation. Doubts regarding new physics interpretations of these anomalies could stem from uncertainties in the common hadronic contributions. We demonstrate that these two anomalies pull the hadronic contributions in opposite directions by performing electroweak fits in which the hadronic contribution was allowed to float. The …
This article is an addendum to Ref.~\cite{Baek:2014jga}. Here, we discuss the invisible Higgs decay width $Γ_{h}^{\rm inv}$ in the Higgs portal vector dark matter (VDM) model in the limit $m_V \rightarrow 0^+$. In the effective field theory (EFT) approach where the VDM mass is attributed to the Stückelberg mechanism, $( Γ_{h}^{\rm inv} )_{\rm EFT}$ is divergent, which is unphysical and puzzling. On the other hand $( Γ_{h}^{\rm inv} )_{\rm UV}$ becomes finite in a UV completion, where the VDM mass is generated by the dark Higgs mechanism. Then we can take the limit $m_V \rightarrow 0^+$ by taki…
We quantify and examine the uncertainties in predictions of the lightest $CP$ even Higgs boson pole mass $M_h$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), utilising current spectrum generators and including some three-loop corrections. There are two broadly different approximations being used: effective field theory (EFT) where an effective Standard Model (SM) is used below a supersymmetric mass scale, and a fixed order calculation, where the MSSM is matched to QCD$\times$QED at the electroweak scale. The uncertainties on the $M_h$ prediction in each approach are broken down into loga…
The hadronic contribution to the eight forward amplitudes of light-by-light scattering ($γ^*γ^*\to γ^*γ^*$) is computed in lattice QCD. Via dispersive sum rules, the amplitudes are compared to a model of the $γ^*γ^*\to {\rm hadrons}$ cross sections in which the fusion process is described by hadronic resonances. Our results thus provide an important test for the model estimates of hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm HLbL}$. Using simple parametrizations of the resonance $M\to γ^*γ^*$ transition form factors, we determine the corresponding …

Hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) is not only a critical part of the Standard Model (SM) prediction for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $(g-2)_μ$, but also a crucial ingredient for global fits to electroweak (EW) precision observables due to its contribution to the running of the fine-structure constant encoded in $Δα^{(5)}_\text{had}$. We find that with modern EW precision data, including the measurement of the Higgs mass, the global fit alone provides a competitive, independent determination of $Δα^{(5)}_\text{had}\big|_\text{EW}=270.2(3.0)\times 10^{-4}$. This value actually lies…

Second order beta-decay processes with and without neutrinos in the final state are key probes of nuclear physics and of the nature of neutrinos. Neutrinoful double-beta decay is the rarest Standard Model process that has been observed and provides a unique test of the understanding of weak nuclear interactions. Observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay would reveal that neutrinos are Majorana fermions and that lepton number conservation is violated in nature. While significant progress has been made in phenomenological approaches to understanding these processes, establishing a connection…
We propose a search for $B$ meson decays to a baryon plus missing energy at the Belle II experiment to probe supersymmetry with a GeV-scale lightest neutralino ${\tildeχ_1^0}$ and $R$-parity violation (RPV). We perform analytic computations of the signal branching fractions in the framework of effective field theory, with a single nonzero RPV operator $λ''_{ij3}\bar{U}_{i}^c\bar{D}_{j}^c\bar{D}_3^c$, where $i,j=1,2$. The hadronic form factors are calculated using an SU(3) phenomenological Lagrangian approach for the proton, as well as several hyperons and charmed baryons. Since the decay of th…
