In one dimension the area law for the entanglement entropy is violated maximally by the ground state of a strong inhomogeneous spin chain, the so called concentric singlet phase (CSP), that looks like a rainbow connecting the two halves of the chain. In this paper we show that, in the weak inhomogeneity limit, the rainbow state is a thermofield double of a conformal field theory with a temperature proportional to the inhomogeneity parameter. This result suggests some relation of the CSP with black holes. Finally, we propose an extension of the model to higher dimensions.
Quantum many-body scars (QMBS) constitute a new quantum dynamical regime in which rare "scarred" eigenstates mediate weak ergodicity breaking. One open question is to understand the most general setting in which these states arise. In this work, we develop a generic construction that embeds a new class of QMBS, rainbow scars, into the spectrum of an arbitrary Hamiltonian. Unlike other examples of QMBS, rainbow scars display extensive bipartite entanglement entropy while retaining a simple entanglement structure. Specifically, the entanglement scaling is volume-law for a random bipartition, whi…
Inhomogeneous quantum critical systems in one spatial dimension have been studied by using conformal field theory in static curved backgrounds. Two interesting examples are the free fermion gas in the harmonic trap and the inhomogeneous XX spin chain called rainbow chain. For conformal field theories defined on static curved spacetimes characterised by a metric which is Weyl equivalent to the flat metric, with the Weyl factor depending only on the spatial coordinate, we study the entanglement hamiltonian and the entanglement spectrum of an interval adjacent to the boundary of a segment where t…
An exponential deformation of a 1D critical Hamiltonian, with couplings falling on a length scale $h^{-1}$, gives rise to ground states whose entanglement entropy follows a volume law, i.e. the area law is violated maximally. The ground state is now in the so-called {\em rainbow phase}, where valence bonds connect sites on the left half with their symmetric counterparts on the right. Here we discuss some of the most relevant features of this rainbow phase, focusing on the XX and Heisenberg models. Moreover, we show that the rainbow state can be understood either as a thermo-field double of a c…
We present bulk tensor networks that exactly represent the ground states of a continuous family of one-dimensional frustration-free Hamiltonians. These states, which are known as area-deformed Motzkin and Fredkin states, exhibit a novel quantum phase transition. By tuning a single parameter, they go from a phase obeying an area law to a highly entangled rainbow phase, where the half-chain entropy scales with the volume. Using the representation of these ground states as superpositions of random walks, we introduce tensor networks for these ground states where local and global rules of the walk…
The discovery of novel entanglement patterns in quantum many-body systems is a prominent research direction in contemporary physics. Here we provide the example of a spin chain with random and inhomogeneous couplings that in the ground state exhibits a very unusual area law violation. In the clean limit, i.e., without disorder, the model is the rainbow chain and has volume law entanglement. We show that, in the presence of disorder, the entanglement entropy exhibits a power-law growth with the subsystem size, with an exponent 1/2. By employing the Strong Disorder Renormalization Group (SDRG) f…
The entanglement entropy of the ground state of a quantum lattice model with local interactions usually satisfies an area law. However, in 1D systems some violations may appear in inhomogeneous systems or in random systems. In our inhomogeneous system, the inhomogeneity parameter, $h$, allows us to tune different regimes where a volumetric violation of the area law appears. We apply the strong disorder renormalization group to describe the maximally entangled state of the system in a strong inhomogeneity regime. Moreover, in a weak inhomogeneity regime, we use a continuum approximation to desc…
We introduce a new spin chain which is a deformation of the Fredkin spin chain and has a phase transition between bounded and extensive entanglement entropy scaling. In this chain, spins have a local interaction of three nearest neighbors. The Hamiltonian is frustration-free and its ground state can be described analytically as a weighted superposition of Dyck paths. In the purely spin $1/2$ case, the entanglement entropy obeys an area law: it is bounded from above by a constant, when the size of the block $n$ increases (and $t>1$). When a local color degree of freedom is introduced the entang…
We present a protocol in which two or more parties can share multipartite entanglement over noisy quantum channels. The protocol is based on the entanglement purification presented by Shor and Preskill [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 441 (2000)] and the quantum teleportation via an isotropic state. We show that a nearly perfect purification implies a nearly perfect sharing of multipartite entanglement between two parties so that the protocol can assure a faithful sharing of multipartite entanglement with Shor and Preskill's proof on the entanglement purification.
We propose a framework to characterize entanglement with quantum discord, both asymmetric and symmetric, over state extensions. In particular, we show that the minimal Bures distance of discord over state extensions is equivalent to Bures distance of entanglement. This equivalence places quantum discord at a more primitive position than entanglement conceptually in the sense that entanglement can be interpreted as an irreducible part of discord over all state extensions. Based on this equivalence, we also offer an operational meaning of Bures distance of entanglement by connecting it to quantu…
The optimization of entanglement evolution for two-mode Gaussian pure states under one-side Gaussian map is studied. Even there isn't complete information about the one-side Gaussian noisy channel, one can still maximize the entanglement distribution by testing the channel with only two specific states.
We study the effects of spontaneous emission on the entanglement dynamics of two qubits interacting with a common Lorentzian structured reservoir. We assume that the qubits are initially prepared in a Bell-like state. We focus on the strong coupling regime and study the entanglement dynamics for different regions of the spontaneous emission decay parameter. This investigation allows us to explore the cross-over between common and independent reservoirs in entanglement dynamics.
We report the first experimental demonstration of wavelength-multiplexed entanglement distribution. 44 channels of highly-entangled photon-pairs from one single broadband source are distributed over 10 km of fiber.
We study entanglement creation over global distances based on a quantum repeater architecture that uses low-earth orbit satellites equipped with entangled photon sources, as well as ground stations equipped with quantum non-demolition detectors and quantum memories. We show that this approach allows entanglement creation at viable rates over distances that are inaccessible via direct transmission through optical fibers or even from very distant satellites.
The first stage of the hybrid quantum repeaters is entanglement generation based on transmission of pulses in coherent states over a lossy channel. Protocols to make entanglement with only one type of error are favorable for rendering subsequent entanglement distillation efficient. Here we provide the tight upper bound on performances of these protocols that is determined only by the channel loss. In addition, we show that this bound is achievable by utilizing a proposed protocol [arXiv:0811.3100] composed of a simple combination of linear optical elements and photon-number-resolving detectors…
The faithful distribution of entanglement over noisy channels is a vital prerequisite for many quantum technological applications. Quantum information can be encoded in different degrees of freedom (DOF) of photons, where each encoding comes with its own advantages and disadvantages with respect to noise resilience and practicality in manipulation. In this work, we experimentally implement a deterministic entanglement purification protocol that allows us to faithfully distribute entanglement in one DOF over a noisy channel and then remotely transfer it to another DOF for manipulation. In parti…
Entanglement and entanglement-assisted are useful resources to enhance the mutual information of the Pauli channels, when the noise on consecutive uses of the channel has some partial correlations. In this paper, We study quantum communication channels with correlated noise and derive a general expression for the mutual information of quantum channel, for the product, maximally entangled state coding and entanglement-assisted systems with correlated noise in the Pauli quantum channels. Hence, we suggest more efficient coding in the entanglement-assisted systems for the transmission of classica…
High-dimensional quantum entanglement can enrich the functionality of quantum information processing. For example, it can enhance the channel capacity for linear optic superdense coding and decrease the error rate threshold of quantum key distribution. Long-distance distribution of a high-dimensional entanglement is essential for such advanced quantum communications over a communications network. Here, we show a long-distance distribution of a four-dimensional entanglement. We employ time-bin entanglement, which is suitable for a fibre transmission, and implement scalable measurements for the …
We give a security proof of quantum cryptography based entirely on entanglement purification. Our proof applies to all possible attacks (individual and coherent). It implies the security of cryptographic keys distributed with the help of entanglement-based quantum repeaters. We prove the security of the obtained quantum channel which may not only be used for quantum key distribution, but also for secure, albeit noisy, transmission of quantum information.
A well-known strategy to characterize multiparticle entanglement utilizes the notion of stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC), but characterizing the resulting entanglement classes is difficult. Given a multiparticle quantum state, we first show that Gilbert's algorithm can be adapted to prove separability or membership in a certain entanglement class. We then present two algorithms for convex optimization over SLOCC classes. The first algorithm uses a simple gradient approach, while the other one employs the accelerated projected-gradient method. For demonstration, t…
We investigate creation of optimal entanglement in symmetric networks. The proposed network is one in which the connections are organized by a group table in other words a group association scheme. We show that optimal entanglement can be provided over such networks by adjusting couplings and initial state. We find that the optimal initial state is a simple local excited state. Moreover we obtain an analytic formula for entanglement achievable between vertex pairs located in the same strata and calculate their relevant optimal couplings. For those pairs located in different strata two upper bo…
We show that entanglement is a useful resource to enhance the mutual information of the depolarizing channel when the noise on consecutive uses of the channel has some partial correlations. We obtain a threshold in the degree of memory, depending on the shrinking factor of the channel, above which a higher amount of classical information is transmitted with entangled signals.
Quantum internet will enable a number of revolutionary applications. It relies on entanglement of remote quantum memories over long distances. Despite enormous progresses so far, the maximal physical separation achieved between two nodes is 1.3 km, and challenges for long distance remain. Here we make a significant step forward by entangling two atomic ensembles in one lab via photon transmission through metropolitan-scale fibers. We use cavity enhancement to create bright atom-photon entanglement, and harness quantum frequency conversion to shift the atomic wavelength to telecom. We realize e…
We study the entanglement dynamics of two qubits, each of which is embedded into its local amplitude-damping reservoir, and the entanglement distribution among all the bipartite subsystems including qubit-qubit, qubit-reservoir, and reservoir-reservoir. It is found that the entanglement can be stably distributed among all components, which is much different to the result obtained under the Born-Markovian approximation by C. E. López {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 080503 (2008)], and particularly it also satisfies an identity. Our unified treatment includes the previous results as…
We present an efficient quantum entanglement distribution over an arbitrary collective-noise channel. The basic idea in the present scheme is that two parties in quantum communication first transmit the entangled states in the frequency degree of freedom which suffers little from the noise in an optical fiber. After the two parties share the photon pairs, they add some operations and equipments to transfer the frequency entanglement of pairs into the polarization entanglement with the success probability of 100\%. Finally, they can get maximally entangled polarization states with polarization …
We analyse a nonlinear optical system which uses cascaded nonlinearities to produce both second and fourth harmonic outputs from an input field at the fundamental frequency. Using fully quantum equations of motion, we show that the system produces quadrature squeezed outputs which exhibit bipartite entanglement, EPR-steering, and asymmetric steering across a two octave frequency range.
We propose and demonstrate a scheme for boosting up the efficiency of entanglement distribution based on a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) over lossy quantum channels. By using backward propagation of a coherent light, our scheme achieves an entanglement-sharing rate that is proportional to the transmittance T of the quantum channel in spite of encoding qubits in multipartite systems for the DFS. We experimentally show that highly entangled states, which can violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality, are distributed at a rate proportional to T.
We report the distribution of time bin entangled photon pairs over 300 km of optical fiber. We realized this by using a high speed and high signal to noise ratio entanglement generation and evaluation setup that consists of periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides and superconducting single photon detectors. The observed two-photon interference fringes exhibited a visibility of 84 %. We confirmed the violation of Bell's inequality by 2.9 standard deviations.
The mathematical structure of quantum entanglement is studied and classified from the point of view of quantum compound states. We show that t he classical-quantum correspondences such as encodings can be treated as dia gonal (d-) entanglements. The mutual entropy of the d-compound and entangled states lead to two different types of entropies for a given quantum state: t he von Neumann entropy, which is achieved as the supremum of the information over all d-entanglements, and the dimensional entropy, which is achieved at the standard entanglement, the true quantum entanglement, coinciding with…
Distributing quantum entanglements over long distances is essential for the realization of a global scale quantum Internet. Most of the prior work and proposals assume an on-demand distribution of entanglements which may result in significant network resource under-utilization. In this work, we introduce Quantum Overlay Networks (QONs) for efficient entanglement distribution in quantum networks. When the demand to create end-to-end user entanglements is low, QONs can generate and store maximally entangled Bell pairs (EPR pairs) at specific overlay storage nodes of the network. Later, during pe…
We propose a scheme for distributing continuous variable entanglement originally established among a pair of mode between a set of four orthogonal co-propagating modes. This is accomplished by exploiting the possibility of coupling polarization with optical angular momentum provided by the q-plate. Here we present the principle of the proposed scheme with a short feasibility study that shows that the four-modes covariance matrix at the scheme output represent an entangled multi mode system.
When shared between remote locations, entanglement opens up fundamentally new capabilities for science and technology [1, 2]. Envisioned quantum networks distribute entanglement between their remote matter-based quantum nodes, in which it is stored, processed and used [1]. Pioneering experiments have shown how photons can distribute entanglement between single ions or single atoms a few ten meters apart [3, 4] and between two nitrogen-vacancy centres 1 km apart [5]. Here we report on the observation of entanglement between matter (a trapped ion) and light (a photon) over 50~km of optical fibre…
We consider entanglement for quantum states defined in vector spaces over the real numbers. Such real entanglement is different from entanglement in standard quantum mechanics over the complex numbers. The differences provide insight into the nature of entanglement in standard quantum theory. Wootters [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 2245 (1998)] has given an explicit formula for the entanglement of formation of two qubits in terms of what he calls the concurrence of the joint density operator. We give a contrasting formula for the entanglement of formation of an arbitrary state of two ``rebits,'' a rebi…
In this work we probe the usefulness of non-Gaussian entangled states as a resource for quantum communication through atmospheric channels. We outline the initial conditions in which non-Gaussian state transfer leads to enhanced entanglement transfer relative to that obtainable via Gaussian state transfer. However, we conclude that in (anticipated) operational scenarios - where most of the non-Gaussian states to be transferred over the air are created just-in-time via photonic subtraction, addition or replacement from incoming Gaussian states - the entanglement-generation rate between stations…
We demonstrate entanglement distribution between two remote quantum nodes located 3 meters apart. This distribution involves the asynchronous preparation of two pairs of atomic memories and the coherent mapping of stored atomic states into light fields in an effective state of near maximum polarization entanglement. Entanglement is verified by way of the measured violation of a Bell inequality, and can be used for communication protocols such as quantum cryptography. The demonstrated quantum nodes and channels can be used as segments of a quantum repeater, providing an essential tool for robus…
Realizing long distance entanglement swapping with independent sources in the real-world condition is important for both future quantum network and fundamental study of quantum theory. Currently, demonstration over a few of tens kilometer underground optical fiber has been achieved. However, future applications demand entanglement swapping over longer distance with more complicated environment. We exploit two independent 1-GHz-clock sequential time-bin entangled photon-pair sources, develop several automatic stability controls, and successfully implement a field test of entanglement swapping o…
In this letter, we report an experimental realization of distributing entangled photon pairs over 100 km of dispersion-shifted fiber. In the experiment, we used a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide to generate the time-energy entanglement and superconducting single-photon detectors to detect the photon pairs after 100 km. We also demonstrate that the distributed photon pairs can still be useful for quantum key distribution and other quantum communication tasks.
A quantum internet aims at harnessing networked quantum technologies, namely by distributing bipartite entanglement between distant nodes. However, multipartite entanglement between the nodes may empower the quantum internet for additional or better applications for communications, sensing, and computation. In this work, we present an algorithm for generating multipartite entanglement between different nodes of a quantum network with noisy quantum repeaters and imperfect quantum memories, where the links are entangled pairs. Our algorithm is optimal for GHZ states with 3 qubits, maximising sim…
Shared entanglement is a resource available to parties communicating over a quantum channel, much akin to public coins in classical communication protocols. Whereas shared randomness does not help in the transmission of information, or significantly reduce the classical complexity of computing functions (as compared to private-coin protocols), shared entanglement leads to startling phenomena such as ``quantum teleportation'' and ``superdense coding.'' The problem of characterising the power of prior entanglement has puzzled many researchers. In this paper, we revisit the problem of transmittin…
We present a study of the behavior of two different figures of merit for quantum correlations, entanglement of formation and quantum discord, under quantum channels showing how the former can, counterintuitively, be more resilient to such environments spoiling effects. By exploiting strict conservation relations between the two measures and imposing necessary constraints on the initial conditions we are able to explicitly show this predominance is related to build-up of the system-environment correlations.
We present a study of the achievable rates for classical information transmission via a lossy bosonic channel with memory, using homodyne detection. A comparison with the memoryless case shows that the presence of memory enhances the bit rate if information is encoded in collective states, i.e. states which are entangled over different uses of the channel.
Quantum network applications like distributed quantum computing and quantum secret sharing present a promising future network equipped with quantum resources. Entanglement generation and distribution over long distances is critical and unavoidable to utilize quantum technology in a fully-connected network. The distribution of bipartite entanglement over long distances has seen some progresses, while the distribution of multipartite entanglement over long distances remains unsolved. Here we report a two-dimensional quantum repeater protocol for the generation of multipartite entanglement over l…
New measures of multipartite entanglement are constructed based on two definitions of multipartite information and different methods of optimizing over extensions of the states. One is a generalization of the squashed entanglement where one takes the mutual information of parties conditioned on the state's extension and takes the infimum over such extensions. Additivity of the multipartite squashed entanglement is proved for both versions of the multipartite information which turn out to be related. The second one is based on taking classical extensions. This scheme is generalized, which enabl…
Entanglement offers substantial advantages in quantum information processing, but loss and noise hinder its applications in practical scenarios. Although it has been well known for decades that the classical communication capacity over lossy and noisy bosonic channels can be significantly enhanced by entanglement, no practical encoding and decoding schemes are available to realize any entanglement-enabled advantage. Here, we report structured encoding and decoding schemes for such an entanglement-assisted communication scenario. Specifically, we show that phase encoding on the entangled two-mo…
We analyze three quantum communication protocols that have been proposed in the literature, and compare how well they communicate single-rail entanglement. We use specific metrics for output state purity and probability of success and include the presence of imperfect photon source and detection components. We find that a distributed noiseless linear amplification (NLA) protocol with a relay point placed half-way between Alice and Bob outperforms NLA at Bob's end and a recently proposed purification protocol under most conditions, unless the distance is very small or the photon source componen…
Fundamental wave features of light play an important role in the realization of superresolution for two spatially separated point sources. It has been shown that (partial) coherence, which is an inevitable feature in practical light propagation, is harmful to measurement precision thus preventing superresolution. Here we study the quantitative effect of another fundamental feature, entanglement, on the quality of superresolution and compare it with that of coherence. Both single- and two-parameter estimations are analyzed in detail. Surprisingly, contrary to coherence, it is found that superre…
We prove that the known formulae for computing the optimal number of maximally entangled pairs required for entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) over the binary field hold for codes over arbitrary finite fields as well. We also give a Gilbert-Varshamov bound for EAQECCs and constructions of EAQECCs coming from punctured self-orthogonal linear codes which are valid for any finite field.
We derive a regularized formula for the common randomness assisted entanglement transmission capacity of finite arbitrarily varying quantum channels (AVQC's). For finite AVQC's with positive capacity for classical message transmission we show, by derandomization through classical forward communication, that the random capacity for entanglement transmission equals the deterministic capacity for entanglement transmission. This is a quantum version of the famous Ahlswede dichotomy. In the infinite case, we derive a similar result for certain classes of AVQC's. At last, we give two possible defini…
As a direct consequence of the no-cloning theorem, the deterministic amplification as in classical communication is impossible for quantum states. This calls for more advanced techniques in a future global quantum network, e.g. for cloud quantum computing. A unique solution is the teleportation of an entangled state, i.e. entanglement swapping, representing the central resource to relay entanglement between distant nodes. Together with entanglement purification and a quantum memory it constitutes a so-called quantum repeater. Since the aforementioned building blocks have been individually demo…
The unique and often-weird properties of quantum mechanics allow an information carrier to propagate through multiple trajectories of quantum channels simultaneously. This ultimately leads us to quantum trajectories with an indefinite causal order of quantum channels. It has been shown that indefinite causal order enables the violation of bottleneck capacity, which bounds the amount of the transferable classical and quantum information through a classical trajectory with a well-defined causal order of quantum channels. In this treatise, we investigate this beneficial property in the realm of b…
It is known that the number of different classical messages which can be communicated with a single use of a classical channel with zero probability of decoding error can sometimes be increased by using entanglement shared between sender and receiver. It has been an open question to determine whether entanglement can ever increase the zero-error communication rates achievable in the limit of many channel uses. In this paper we show, by explicit examples, that entanglement can indeed increase asymptotic zero-error capacity, even to the extent that it is equal to the normal capacity of the chann…
Multiple photonic degrees of freedom can be explored to generate high-dimensional quantum states; commonly referred to as `qudits'. Qudits offer several advantages for quantum communications, including higher information capacity, noise resilience and data throughput, and lower information loss over different propagation mediums (free space, optical fibre, underwater) as compared to conventional qubits based communication system. However, qudits have been little exploited in literature, owing to their difficulty in transmission and detection. In this paper, for the first time, we develop and f…
