Tidal interactions of galaxies in galaxy clusters have been proposed as one potential explanation of the morphology-density relation at low masses. The efficiency of tidal transformation is expected to depend strongly on the orbit of a galaxy within the cluster halo. The orbit determines both the strength of the cluster's global tidal field and the probability of encounters with other cluster members. Additionally, we investigate the effect of an inclination between the disk of the infalling galaxy and its orbital plane. We also compare our results to observational data. We find that galaxies that entered a cluster from the outskirts are unlikely to be significantly transformed. Closer to the cluster centre, tidal interactions are a more efficient mechanism for producing harassed galaxies. But the inclination of the disk can reduce the mass loss significantly, yet it amplifies the thickening.
We conduct a comprehensive numerical study of the orbital dependence of harassment on early-type dwarfs consisting of 168 different orbits within a realistic, Virgo-like cluster, varying in eccentricity and pericentre distance. We find harassment is only effective at stripping stars or truncating their stellar disks for orbits that enter deep into the cluster core. Comparing to the orbital distribution in cosmological simulations, we find that the majority of the orbits (more than three quarters) result in no stellar mass loss. We also study the effects on the radial profiles of the globular c…
A new harassment model is presented that models the complex, and dynamical tidal field of a Virgo like galaxy cluster. The model is applied to small, late-type dwarf disc galaxies (of substantially lower mass than in previous harassment simulations) as they infall into the cluster from the outskirts. These dwarf galaxies are only mildly affected by high speed tidal encounters with little or no observable consequences; typical stellar losses are $<10\%$, producing very low surface brightness streams ($μ_B > 31$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$), and a factor of two drop in dynamical mass-to-light ratio. Final…
Isolated HI clouds with no optical counterparts are often taken as evidence for galaxy-galaxy interactions, though an alternative hypothesis is that these are primordial 'dark galaxies' which have not formed stars. Similarly, certain kinematic features in HI streams are also controversial, sometimes taken as evidence of dark galaxies but also perhaps explicable as the result of harassment. We numerically model the passage of a galaxy through the gravitational field of cluster. The galaxy consists of SPH particles for the gas and n-bodies for the stars and dark matter, while the cluster include…
The existence of long (> 100 kpc) HI streams and small (< 20 kpc) free-floating HI clouds is well-known. While the formation of the streams has been investigated extensively, and the isolated clouds are often purported to be interaction debris, little research has been done on the formation of optically dark HI clouds that are not part of a larger stream. One possibility is that such features result from the fragmentation of more extended streams, while another idea is that they are primordial, optically dark galaxies. We test the validity of the fragmentation scenario (via harassment) using n…
Stephan's Quintet (SQ) is a nearby compact galaxy group and a perfect laboratory for studying the process of galaxy evolution through galaxy harassment and interaction. By analysing the kinematics of SQ we aim to provide an increased understanding of the group, the history of the interactions, their cause and effect, and the details regarding the physical processes occurring as galaxies interact. We have studied the ionised gas and stellar kinematics using the Large Binocular Telescope, and the molecular gas kinematics via CO using the IRAM 30m. Large areas of the group have been mapped and an…
We study the properties of a sample of 3967 LINER galaxies selected from SDSS-DR7, respect to their proximity to galaxy groups. The host galaxies of LINER have been analysed and compared with a well defined control sample of 3841 non-LINER galaxies matched in redshift, luminosity, colour, morphology, age and stellar mass content. We find no difference between LINER and control galaxies in terms of colour and age of stellar population as function of the virial mass and distance to the geometric centre of the group. However, we find that LINER are more likely to populate low density environments…
In the field of Astrobiology, the precise location, prevalence and age of potential extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) have not been explicitly explored. Here, we address these inquiries using an empirical galactic simulation model to analyze the spatial-temporal variations and the prevalence of potential ETI within the Galaxy. This model estimates the occurrence of ETI, providing guidance on where to look for intelligent life in the Search for ETI (SETI) with a set of criteria, including well-established astrophysical properties of the Milky Way. Further, typically overlooked factors such as…
Since 2015 there has been a great deal of interest in a supposed new class of galaxy called Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs). These are large systems with sizes $> 1.5$ kpc and have surface brightness values which are $μ> 25$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Because of their low-surface brightness they are proposed to be `failed' Milky Way type galaxies given their similar size, but much lower stellar masses. As such, these systems are considered by some as a new type of galaxy, yet we show that they are a subset of a well-established and well studied population of low-surface brightness galaxies found mostly …
We investigate the effect of environment on the presence and fuelling of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) by identifying galaxies hosting AGN in massive galaxy clusters and the fields around them. We have identified AGN candidates via optical variability (178), X-ray emission (74), and mid-IR SEDs (64) in multi- wavelength surveys covering regions centered on 12 galaxy clusters at redshifts 0.5 < z < 0.9. In this paper, we present the radial distribution of AGN in clusters to examine how local environment affects the presence of an AGN and its host galaxy. While distributions vary from cluster to …
We investigate the star formation rate and its location in the major merger cluster Abell 2465 at $z$ = 0.245. Optical properties of the cluster are described in Paper I. Measurements of the H$α$ and infrared dust emission of galaxies in the cluster were made with an interference filter centred on the redshifted line at a wavelength of 817 nm and utilized data from the WISE satellite 12 $μ$m band. Imaging in the Johnson $U$ and $B$ bands was obtained, and along with SDSS $u$ and $r$ was used to study the blue fraction, which appears enhanced, as a further signatures of star formation in the cl…
Without the interference of a number of events, galaxies may suffer in crowded environments (e.g., stripping, harassment, strangulation); isolated elliptical galaxies provide a control sample for the study of galaxy formation. We present the study of a sample of isolated ellipticals using imaging from a variety of telescopes, focusing on their globular cluster systems as tracers of their stellar halos. Our main findings are: (a) GC color bimodality is common even in the most isolated systems; (b) the specific frequency of GCs is fairly constant with galaxy mass, without showing an increase tow…
It has long been known that environment has a large effect on star formation in galaxies. There are several known plausible mechanisms to remove the cool gas needed for star formation, such as strangulation, harassment and ram-pressure stripping. It is unclear which process is dominant, and over what range of stellar mass. In this paper, we find evidence for suppression of the cross-correlation function between massive galaxies and less massive star-forming galaxies, giving a measure of how less likely a galaxy is to be star-forming in the vicinity of a more massive galaxy. We develop a formali…
We use deep high resolution \textit{HST/ACS} imaging of two fields in the core of the Coma cluster to investigate the occurrence of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in quiescent dwarf galaxies as faint as $M_{I} = -10$ mag. We employ a hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression framework to model the faint end of the nucleation fraction ($f_{n}$) as a function of both galaxy luminosity and environment. We find that $f_n$ is remarkably high in Coma: at $M_{I} \approx -13$ mag half of the cluster dwarfs still host prominent NSCs. Comparison with dwarf systems in nearby clusters and groups shows that,…
The Fornax Deep Survey Dwarf galaxy Catalog (FDSDC) includes 564 dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster and the in-falling Fornax A subgroup. We use the FDSDC galaxies for statistical analysis of the structural and stellar population differences in the range of galactic environments within the Fornax cluster. We present the standard scaling relations for the dwarfs and analyze trends as a function of cluster-centric radius. We find a different behavior for the bright dwarfs (-18.5 mag < M$_r$ < -16 mag) as compared to the fainter ones (M$_r$ > -16 mag): While considering galaxies in the same mag…
In the Local Group there are three main types of dwarf galaxies: Dwarf Irregulars, Dwarf Spheroidals, and Dwarf Ellipticals. Intermediate/transitional types are present as well. This contribution reviews the idea that the present day variety of dwarf galaxy morphologies in the Local Group might reveal the existence of a transformation chain of events, of which any particular dwarf galaxy represents a manifestation of a particular stage. In other words, all dwarf galaxies that now are part of the Local Group would have formed identically in the early universe, but then evolved differently becau…
We derive the close pair fractions and volume merger rates as a function of luminosity and morphology for galaxies in the GAMA survey with -23 < M(r) < -17 at 0.01 < z < 0.22. The merger fraction is about 0.015 at all luminosities (assuming 1/2 of pairs merge) and the volume merger rate is about 0.00035 per cubic Mpc per Gyr. Dry mergers (between red or spheroidal galaxies) are uncommon and decrease with decreasing luminosity. Fainter mergers are wet, between blue or disky galaxies. Damp mergers (one of each type) follow the average of dry and wet mergers. In the brighter luminosity bin (-23 <…
Using multi-wavelength data, from UV-optical-near-mid IR, for $\sim$6000 galaxies in the local Universe, we study the dependence of star formation on the morphological T-types for massive galaxies ($\log M_*/M_\odot \geq 10$). We find that, early-type spirals (Sa-Sbc) and S0s predominate in the green valley, which is a transition zone between the star forming and quenched regions. Within the early-type spirals, as we move from Sa to Sbc spirals the fraction of green valley and quenched galaxies decreases, indicating the important role of the bulge in the quenching of galaxies. The fraction of …
We propose the Cosmic Web Detachment (CWD) model, a framework to interpret the star-formation history of galaxies in a cosmological context. The CWD model unifies several starvation mechanisms known to disrupt or stop star formation into one single physical framework. Galaxies begin accreting star-forming gas at early times via a network of primordial filaments, simply related to the pattern of density fluctuations in the initial conditions. But when shell-crossing occurs on intergalactic scales, this pattern is disrupted, and the galaxy detaches from its primordial filaments, ending the accre…
We use the outputs of a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation run on the Millennium Simulation to investigate the prevalence of 3D compact groups (CGs) of galaxies from $z = 11$ to 0. Our publicly available code identifies CGs using the 3D galaxy number density, the mass ratio of secondary+tertiary to the primary member, mass density in a surrounding shell, the relative velocities of candidate CG members, and a minimum CG membership of three. We adopt "default" values for the first three criteria, representing the observed population of Hickson CGs at $z = 0$. The percentage of non-dwarf g…
We present a photometric study of the dwarf galaxy population in the low to moderate density environments of the MATLAS (Mass Assembly of early-Type gaLAxies with their fine Structures) deep imaging survey. The sample consists of 2210 dwarfs, including 508 nucleated. We define a nucleus as a compact source that is close to the galaxy photocentre (within 0.5 $R_e$) which is also the brightest such source within the galaxy's effective radius. The morphological analysis is performed using a 2D surface brightness profile modelling on the g-band images of both the galaxies and nuclei. Our study rev…
We investigate the role of the environment in processing molecular gas in radio galaxies (RGs). We observed five RGs at $z=0.4-2.6$ in dense Mpc-scale environment with the IRAM-30m telescope. We set four upper-limits and report a tentative CO(7$\rightarrow$6) detection for COSMOS-FRI 70 at $z=2.63$, which is the most distant brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) candidate detected in CO. We speculate that the cluster environment might have played a role in preventing the refueling via environmental mechanisms such as galaxy harassment, strangulation, ram-pressure, or tidal stripping. The RGs of this …
We develop a visibility based power spectrum estimator to probe the power spectrum directly from the interferometric observations and also estimate the errors in it. A numerical simulation of synthetic observations is also performed to access the efficacy and limitations of this estimator. We use this estimator to evaluate the power spectrum of three individual spiral galaxies, a dwarf galaxy sample and THINGS * spiral galaxies. In each case, the power spectrum is found to follow a power law PHI (U) = AU α over a specific length scale range. The estimated value for the slope α ranges from ~ ~1…
We present results from Chandra observations of the X-ray starburst galaxies NGC 3310 and NGC 2276. We detect 27 discrete sources in NGC 3310, and 19 discrete sources in NGC 2276 with luminosities above $\mathrm{1.0\times 10^{38}\ erg\ s^{-1}}$. The majority of the sources have photon indices of 1.7-2.0, typical for X-ray binaries. Both galaxies have large numbers of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs; sources with $\mathrm{L(0.3-10.0\ keV)>10^{39}\ erg\ s^{-1}}$), 14 for NGC 3310 concentrated on the circumnuclear star-forming ring and north spiral arm and 11 for NGC 2276 with the brighter one…
In this work, we investigate the reason behind the increased occurrence of S0 galaxies in high density environments. Our sample comprises of $\sim$ 2500 spiral and $\sim$ 2000 S0 galaxies spanning a wide range of environments. Dividing the galaxies into categories of classical and pseudobulge hosting spiral and S0 galaxies, we have studied their properties as a function of the environment. We find that the fraction of pseudobulge hosting disc galaxies decreases with increase in density. The classical bulge hosting spirals and S0 galaxies follow a similar trend in less dense environments but to…

We investigate the cold-gas properties of massive Virgo galaxies ($>10^9$ M$_\odot$) at $<3R_{200}$ ($R_{200}$ is the radius where the mean interior density is 200 times the critical density) on the projected phase-space diagram (PSD) with the largest archival dataset to date to understand the environmental effect on galaxy evolution in the Virgo cluster. We find: lower HI and H$_2$ mass fractions and higher star-formation efficiencies (SFEs) from HI and H$_2$ in the Virgo galaxies than the field galaxies for matched stellar masses; the Virgo galaxies generally follow the field relationships b…
Gravitational wave (GW) observatories are discovering binary neutron star mergers (BNSMs), and in at least one event we were able to track it down in multiple wavelengths of light, which allowed us to identify the host galaxy. Using a catalogue of local galaxies with inferred star formation histories and adopting a BNSM delay time distribution (DTD) model, we investigate the dependence of BNSM rate on an array of galaxy properties. Compared to the intrinsic property distribution of galaxies, that of BNSM host galaxies is skewed toward galaxies with redder colour, lower specific star formation …
Abridged for arXiv: In this work, we apply a powerful new technique in order to observationally derive accurate assembly histories through a self-consistent combined stellar dynamical and population galaxy model. We present this approach for three edge-on lenticular galaxies from the Fornax3D project -- FCC 153, FCC 170, and FCC 177 -- in order to infer their mass assembly histories individually and in the context of the Fornax cluster. The method was tested on mock data from simulations to quantify its reliability. We find that the galaxies studied here have all been able to form dynamically-…
We present a comprehensive study of the Na I $λ$5890, 5895 (Na I D) resonant lines in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR7) spectroscopic sample to look for neutral gas outflows in the local galaxies. Individual galaxy spectra are stacked in bins of M${\star}$ and SFR to investigate the dependence of galactic wind occurrence and velocity as a function of the galaxy position in the SFR-$M{\star}$ plane. In massive galaxies at the high SFR tail we find evidence of a significant blue-shifted Na I D absorption, which we interpret as evidence of neutral outflowing gas. The occurrence of the blue…
We present the results of a Keck-ESI spectroscopic study of six dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Perseus Cluster core, and confirm two dwarfs as cluster members for the first time. All six dEs follow the size-magnitude relation for dE/dSph galaxies. Central velocity dispersions are measured for three Perseus dwarfs in our sample, and all lie on the $σ$-luminosity relation for early-type, pressure supported systems. We furthermore examine SA 0426-002, a unique dE in our sample with a bar-like morphology surrounded by low-surface brightness wings/lobes ($μ_{B} = 27$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$). Give…
A number of the massive clusters in the halo, bulge and disc of the Galaxy are not genuine globular clusters (GCs), but instead are different beasts altogether. They are the remnant nuclear star clusters (NSCs) of ancient galaxies since accreted by the Milky Way. While some clusters are readily identifiable as NSCs, and can be readily traced back to their host galaxy (e.g., M54 and the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy) others have proven more elusive. Here we combine a number of independent constraints, focusing on their internal abundances and overall kinematics, to find NSCs accreted by the Galaxy a…
With the advent of the next generation wide-field cameras it became possible to survey in an unbiased mode galaxies spanning a variety of local densities, from the core of rich clusters, to compact and loose groups, down to filaments and voids. The sensitivity reached by these instruments allowed to extend the observation to dwarf galaxies, the most "fragile" objects in the universe. At the same time models and simulations have been tailored to quantify the different effects of the environment on the evolution of galaxies. Simulations, models, and observations consistently indicate that star-f…
We study the preferred environments of $z \sim 0$ massive relic galaxies ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$ galaxies with little or no growth from star formation or mergers since $z \sim 2$). Significantly, we carry out our analysis on both a large cosmological simulation and an observed galaxy catalogue. Working on the Millennium I-WMAP7 simulation we show that the fraction of today massive objects which have grown less than 10 per cent in mass since $z \sim 2$ is ~0.04 per cent for the whole massive galaxy population with $M_\star > 10^{10}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$. This fraction rises to …
In order to gain a better understanding of planet formation and evolution, it is important to examine the statistics of exoplanets in the Galactic context. By combining information on stellar elemental abundances and kinematics, we constructed separate samples of Kepler stars according to their affiliation to the Galactic components of thin disk, thick disk and stellar halo. Using a Bayesian analysis with conjugate priors, we then investigated how planet occurrence rates differ in different regions of planet properties. We find that young, slow and metal-rich stars, associated mainly with the …
In this contribution the hypothesis that the Galactic globular clusters with substantial internal [Fe/H] abundance ranges are the former nuclei of disrupted dwarf galaxies is discussed. Evidence considered includes the form of the metallicity distribution function, the occurrence of large diffuse outer envelopes in cluster density profiles, and the presence of ([s-process/Fe], [Fe/H]) correlations. The hypothesis is shown to be plausible but with the caveat that if significantly more than the current nine clusters known to have [Fe/H] spreads are found, then re-evaluation will be required.
Dwarf galaxies in the Local Group (LG) represent a distinct as well as diverse family of tracers of the earliest phases of galaxy assembly and the processing resulting from galactic harassment. Their stellar populations can be resolved and used as probes of the evolution of their host galaxy. In this regard, we present the first reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of them using the most evolved AGB stars that are long period variable (LPV). For the nearby, relatively massive and interacting gas-rich dwarf galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds, we found that the bulk of the stars forme…
Radio observations over the last two decades have provided evidence that diffuse synchrotron emission in the form of megaparsec-scale radio halos in galaxy clusters is likely tracing regions of the intracluster medium where relativistic particles are accelerated during cluster mergers. In this paper we present results of a survey of 14 galaxy clusters carried out with the 7-element Karoo Array Telescope at 1.86 GHz, aimed to extend the current studies of radio halo occurrence to systems with lower masses (M$_{\rm 500} > 4\times10^{14}$ M${_\odot}$). We found upper limits at the $0.6 - 1.9 \tim…
The stellar kinematics of the spheroids and discs of S0 galaxies contain clues to their formation histories. Unfortunately, it is difficult to disentangle the two components and to recover their stellar kinematics in the faint outer parts of the galaxies using conventional absorption line spectroscopy. This paper therefore presents the stellar kinematics of six S0 galaxies derived from observations of planetary nebulae (PNe), obtained using the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph. To separate the kinematics of the two components, we use a maximum-likelihood method that combines the discrete kinemati…
Context. The stars in the Milky Way thin and thick disks can be distinguished by several properties such as metallicity and kinematics. It is not clear whether the two populations also differ in the properties of planets orbiting the stars. In order to study this, a careful analysis of both the chemical composition and mass detection limits is required for a sufficiently large sample. Currently, this information is still limited only to large radial-velocity (RV) programs. Based on the recently published archival database of the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) spectrograp…
We investigate the consequences of superkicks on the population of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the Universe residing in brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). There is strong observational evidence that BCGs grew prominently at late times (up to a factor 2-4 in mass from z=1), mainly through mergers with satellite galaxies from the cluster, and they are known to host the most massive SMBHs ever observed. Those SMBHs are also expected to grow hierarchically, experiencing a series of mergers with other SMBHs brought in by merging satellites. Because of the net linear momentum taken away from…
We demonstrate the use of Haralick features for the automated classification of radio galaxies. The set of thirteen Haralick features represent an extremely compact non-parametric representation of image texture, and are calculated directly from imagery using the Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). The GLCM is an encoding of the relationship between the intensity of neighbouring pixels in an image. Using 10,000 sources detected in the first data release of the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), we demonstrate that Haralick features are highly efficient, rotationally invariant descriptors …
We explore how the galaxy stellar spins acquire a peculiar tendency of being aligned with the major principal axes of the local tidal fields, in contrast to their DM counterparts which tend to be perpendicular to them, regardless of their masses. Analyzing the halo and subhalo catalogs from the IllustrisTNG 300 hydrodynamic simulations at $z\le 1$, we determine the cosines of the alignment angles, $\cosα$, between the galaxy stellar and DM spins. Creating four $\cosα$-selected samples of the galaxies and then controlling them to share the same density and mass distributions, we determine the a…
The presence of megaparsec-scale radio halos in galaxy clusters has already been established by many observations over the last two decades. The emerging explanation for the formation of these giant sources of diffuse synchrotron radio emission is that they trace turbulent regions in the intracluster medium, where particles are trapped and accelerated during cluster mergers. Our current observational knowledge is, however, mainly limited to massive systems. Here we present observations of a sample of 14 mass-selected galaxy clusters, i.e. $M_{\rm 500} > 4\times10^{14}$~M${_\odot}$, in the Sout…
Aims. Red supergiants (RSGs) are among the most luminous of all stars, easily detectable in external galaxies, and may ideally serve as kinematic tracers of Galactic structure. Some RSGs are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes detectable by their dust and molecular and, in particular, maser emission. This study consists of a search for maser emission from silicon monoxide (SiO) toward a significant number of RSGs that are members of massive stellar clusters, many of which have only recently been discovered. Further, we aim to relate the occurrence of maser action to properties of the host st…
A numerical detection of the mass-dependent spin transition of the galaxies is presented. Analyzing a sample of the galaxies with stellar masses in the range of $10^{9}< (M_{\star}/M_{\odot})\le 10^{11}$ from the IllustrisTNG300-1 simulations, we explore the alignment tendency between the galaxy baryon spins and the three eigenvectors of the linearly reconstructed tidal field as a function of $M_{\star}$ and its evolution in the redshift range of $0\le z \le 1.5$. Detecting a significant signal of the occurrence of the mass-dependent transition of the galaxy spins, we show that the centrals di…
