A search is performed for a vector-like heavy T quark that is produced in pairs and that decays to a top quark and a Higgs boson. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. For T quarks with large mass values the top quarks and Higgs bosons can have significant Lorentz boosts, so that their individual decay products often overlap and merge. Methods are applied to resolve the substructure of such merged jets. Upper limits on the production cross section of a T quark with mass between 500 and 1000 GeV are derived. If the T quark decays exclusively to tH, the observed (expected) lower limit on the mass of the T quark is 745 (773) GeV at 95% confidence level. For the first time an algorithm is used for tagging boosted Higgs bosons that is based on a combination of jet substructure information and b tagging.
In this paper we introduce a new approach to study jet substructure in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that it can be used to discriminate the boosted heavy particles from the QCD jets and the method is complimentary to the existing other jet substructure algorithms. Applications to searches for hadronically decaying W/Z+jets and heavy resonance that decays to a WW final state are also discussed.
In this paper we study the identification of boosted hadronically decaying top quarks using jet substructure in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that the method can greatly reduce the QCD jet background while maintaining high identification efficiency of the boosted top quark even in a very high pileup condition. Applications to searches for heavy resonances that decay to a $t\bar{t}$ final state are also discussed.
The presence of tau leptons in the final state is an important signature in many Higgs boson and SUSY searches. With the ATLAS detector, hadronically decaying tau leptons can be reconstructed in a wide range of transverse energies. The reconstruction algorithm for hadronically decaying tau leptons is explained and the performance of tau lepton identification is shown. Particularly important is the discrimination of hadronically decaying tau leptons against overwhelming backgrounds from QCD jets.
Hadronically decaying tau leptons are of prime importance in numerous physics analyses in ATLAS. The spectrum of the possible applications of hadronically decaying tau leptons reaches from Standard Model measurements, including Higgs searches, to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. The basic principles behind the sophisticated tau reconstruction and identification techniques, which are specifically designed to identify hadronically decaying taus and reject various background processes, are delineated here along with current data-driven estimates of their respective performance.
Jets of high energy collimated particles provide a rich phenomenology to study quantum chromodynamics, from first-principles tests of perturbative calculations to investigations of the emergent properties of the strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. In these proceedings, we highlight several recent jet measurements by the ALICE Collaboration, with a focus on jet substructure observables.
This paper presents a study of the production of $WW$ or $WZ$ boson pairs, with one $W$ boson decaying to $eν$ or $μν$ and one $W$ or $Z$ boson decaying hadronically. The analysis uses 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV $pp$ collision data, collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Cross-sections for $WW/WZ$ production are measured in high-$p_{T}$ fiducial regions defined close to the experimental event selection. The cross-section is measured for the case where the hadronically decaying boson is reconstructed as two resolved jets, and the case where it is reconstructed as …
This paper describes flavour independent searches for hadronically decaying neutral Higgs bosons in the data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. The collected data-set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of around 610 pb^{-1}. The e+e- -> hA and e+e- -> hZ processes are considered, with direct Higgs boson decays into hadrons. No evidence for Higgs boson production is found, and cross-section limits are set as a function of the Higgs boson masses. No explicit assumptions are made on the underlying physics beyond the Standard Model, …
A search is presented for dark matter produced in association with a hadronically decaying W or Z boson using 3.2 /fb of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and are interpreted in terms of both an effective field theory and a simplified model containing dark matter.
This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson $(H\to b\bar{b})$ candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two $b$-quarks in the single jet. No significant ex…
Hadronic decays of Higgs bosons, not necessarily into b-quarks, have been searched for using data collected at LEP-2. Such searches are complementary to the usual Standard Model Higgs searches and lead to more model-independence. Preliminary results obtained by the four LEP collaborations are presented for the hZ production mechanism (using the q-qbarq-qbar, q-qbarnu-nubar and q-qbarl+l- channels) and combined for the first time.

The analyzed data were collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. Deep neural network algorithms are used to identify the jet initiated by the bottom quark and the jet containing the decay products of the top quark when the W boson from the top quark decays hadronically. No excess above the estimated standard model background is observed. Upper limits on…
In this paper we study the identification of the b quark inside a boosted hadronically decaying top quark in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that the method can be used to greatly reduce the QCD jet background even in a very high pileup condition. The method has a much smaller fake rate for QCD jets compared to typical b quark identification algorithms in jets at the same signal efficiency. When combining the b quark identification in the center-of-mass frame of the jet with jet substructure information, we can improve the rejection rate of QCD jet background by almost an o…

Study of polarization of heavy particles is an important branch of research in today's collider studies. The massive $W$ boson has two types of polarization states, which usually are studied via the angular distribution of its decay products. We have studied polarization of hadronic and boosted $W$ boson using jet substructure technique at 14 TeV LHC. Two different methods, viz. N-subjettiness and Soft Drop, were used to find the subjets, which are approximately considered to be the two hadronic decay products of $W$, inside boosted $W$ jets. These subjets were then used to find the distributi…

Energy correlators are field-theoretically clean and phenomenologically valuable probes of QCD dynamics. We explore the possibility of using the information encoded in the energy correlators of a hadronically decaying electroweak vector boson in order to extract its full decay density matrix. The kinematics of the one- and two-point energy correlators can indeed discriminate between longitudinal and transverse modes and reveal the interference pattern between different vector polarizations. Such observables improve the sensitivity to microscopic new physics affecting the production rate of the…
A model-dependent analysis of the hadronic substructure in tau- -> pi- pi- pi+ neutrino decay is reported. The decay is dominated by the process tau- -> a1(1260)- + neutrino, in which a1(1260)- -> rho0 pi- in an S-wave decay. Amplitudes involving a1(1260) decays into isoscalars, especially a_1(1260)- -> f0(600)pi-, are large. tau- -> pi- pi- pi+ neutrino decays via the pseudoscalar pi(1300)- are small. These results support the resonant substructure reported in the previously reported analysis of tau- -> pi0 pi0 pi- neutrino decay mode from the same CLEO II data sample.

The distribution of particles inside hadronic jets produced in the decay of boosted $W$ and $Z$ bosons can be used to discriminate such jets from the continuum background. Given that a jet has been identified as likely resulting from the hadronic decay of a boosted $W$ or $Z$ boson, this paper presents a technique for further differentiating $Z$ bosons from $W$ bosons. The variables used are jet mass, jet charge, and a b-tagging discriminant. Events containing hadronically decaying heavy particles with large momentum, leading to so-called merged jets, are expected to play a significant role in both searches for new physics and measurements of Standard Model processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In this article, a comparative study of the modeling of such merged jet topologies by different Monte-Carlo event generators is presented. The observed differences emphasize the need to refine such modeling based on the observation of Standard Model processes prior to claims of discovery.

A new algorithm for the identification of boosted, hadronically decaying, heavy particles at the LHC is presented. The algorithm is based on the known procedure of jet clustering with variable distance parameter $R$ and adapts the jet size to its transverse momentum $p_T$. Subjets are found using a mass jump condition. The resulting algorithm - called Heavy Object Tagger with Variable $R$ (HOTVR) - features little algorithmic complexity and combines jet clustering, subjet finding and rejection of soft clusters in one sequence. While the HOTVR algorithm can be used for the identification of any…
The rest frame subjet algorithm is introduced to define the subjets for the SISCone jet. Using it, an IR and collinear safe jet shape observable N-subjettiness, $τ_N^{j}$, is defined to discriminate the fat jet from a highly boosted color singlet particle decaying to N partons and the QCD jet. Using rest frame subjets and $τ_2^{j}$ on dijets from highly boosted $\it H / W / Z$ bosons through $pp \to \it H W$, $\it H Z$, we found that statistical significance of the signal is about $2 σ$ at the LHC with $\mathcal{L} \sim 30 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ at $14 \tev$.
