The magnitude of the spin polarization at the Fermi level of ferromagnetic materials at room temperature is a key property for spintronics. Investigating the Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi a value of 93$\%$ for the spin polarization has been observed at room temperature, where the high spin polarization is related to a stable surface resonance in the majority band extending deep into the bulk. In particular, we identified in our spectroscopical analysis that this surface resonance is embedded in the bulk continuum with a strong coupling to the majority bulk states. The resonance behaves very bulk-like, as it extends over the first six atomic layers of the corresponding (001)-surface. Our study includes experimental investigations, where the bulk electronic structure as well as surface-related features have been investigated using spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-UPS) and for a larger probing depth spin-integrated high energy x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES). The results are interpreted in comparison with first-principles band structure and photoemission calculations which consider all relativistic, surface and high-energy effects properly.
Electronic and structural properties of ultrathin MgO layers grown on epitaxial Fe(110) films were investigated at room temperature by means of spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger-electron spectroscopy, and low energy electron diffraction. The spin polarization at the Fermi level of the Fe(110) film decreases abruptly with increasing thickness of MgO layer up to 7 Å. This behavior is attributed to the formation of a thin FeO layer at the MgO(111)/Fe(110) interface, attenuating the intrinsic spin polarization.
We utilized X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the crystal surface of Weyl semimetal NbAs. XPEEM images present white and black contrast in both the Nb 3d and As 3d core level spectra. Surface-sensitive XPS spectra indicate that the entire surface of the sample contains both surface states of Nb 3d and As 3d, in form of oxides, and bulk states of NbAs. Estimated atomic percentage values nNb/nAs suggest that the surface is Nb-rich and asymmetric for white and black areas.
This work reports on the measurement of magnetic dichroism in angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from in-plane magnetized buried thin films. The high bulk sensitivity of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in combination with circularly polarized radiation enables the investigation of the magnetic properties of buried layers. Angular distributions of high kinetic energy (7 to 8 keV) photoelectrons in a range of about 60 deg were recorded in parallel to the energy distribution. Depending on purpose, energy and angular resolutions of 150 to 250 meV and 0.17 to 2 deg can be ac…
We describe a spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (SARPES) apparatus with a vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) laser ($hν$= 6.994 eV) developed at the Laser and Synchrotron Research Center at the Institute for Solid State Physics, The University of Tokyo. The spectrometer consists of a hemispherical photoelectron analyzer equipped with an electron deflector function and twin very-low-energy-electron-diffraction-type spin detectors, which allows us to analyze the spin vector of a photoelectron three-dimensionally with both high energy and angular resolutions. The combination of the high-p…

The distribution of photoelectrons acquired in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy can be mapped onto energy-momentum space of the Bloch electrons in the crystal. The explicit forms of the mapping function $f$ depend on the configuration of the apparatus as well as on the type of the photoelectron analyzer. We show that the existence of the analytic forms of $f^{\text{-}1}$ is guaranteed in a variety of setups. The variety includes the case when the analyzer is equipped with a photoelectron deflector. Thereby, we provide a demonstrative mapping program implemented by an algorithm that ut…
Optical pumping of solids creates a non-equilibrium electronic structure where electrons and photons combine to form quasiparticles of dressed electronic states. The resulting shift of electronic levels is known as the optical Stark effect, visible as a red shift in the optical spectrum. Here we show that in a pump-probe setup we can uniquely define a non-equilibrium quasiparticle bandstructure that can be directly measurable with photo-electron spectroscopy. The dynamical photon-dressing (and undressing) of the many-body electronic states can be monitored by pump-probe time and angular resolv…
A novel approach is proposed, where energy filtered electrons, carrying both chemical identity and electrical information, serve as fine and flexible electrodes in direct electrical measurements. The method, termed 'chemically resolved electrical measurements' (CREM), is simple and general, demonstrated here with a slightly modified X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. Selected sub-surface regions are electrically analyzed and I-V curves of self-assembled monolayers, free of substrate and top contact contributions, are derived with no need for improved metallic substrates. Unique electrical infor…
This work reports the measurement of magnetic dichroism in angular-resolved photoemission from in-plane magnetized buried thin films. The high bulk sensitivity of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in combination with circularly polarized radiation enables the investigation of the magnetic properties of buried layers. HAXPES experiments with an excitation energy of 8 keV were performed on exchange-biased magnetic layers covered by thin oxide films. Two types of structures were investigated with the IrMn exchange-biasing layer either above or below the ferromagnetic layer: one with …
Momentum-resolved resonant photoelectron spectroscopic study for 1T-TiSe$_2$: Observation of negative q in the Fano resonance due to inter-atomic interaction in the valence band
We develop a first-principles approach based on many-body perturbation theory to investigate the effects of the interaction between electrons and carrier plasmons on the electronic properties of highly-doped semiconductors and oxides. Through the evaluation of the electron self-energy, we account simultaneously for electron-plasmon and electron-phonon coupling in theoretical calculations of angle-resolved photoemission spectra, electron linewidths, and relaxation times. We apply this methodology to electron-doped anatase TiO2 as an illustrative example. The simulated spectra indicate that elec…
$\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ has recently been shown to realize in its low-temperature phase the type-II Weyl semimetal (WSM). We investigated by time- and angle- resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) the possible influence of the Weyl points in the electron dynamics above the Fermi level $\mathrm{E_F}$, by comparing the ultrafast response of $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ in the trivial and topological phases. In the low-temperature WSM phase, we report an enhanced relaxation rate of electrons optically excited to the conduction band, which we interpret as a fingerprint of the local gap closure when Weyl po…
In this work the complete valence-band structure of the molybdenum dichalcogenides MoS_2, MoSe_2, and alpha-MoTe_2 is presented and discussed in comparison. The valence bands have been studied using both angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with synchrotron radiation, as well as, ab-initio band-structure calculations. The ARPES measurements have been carried out in the constant-final-state (CFS) mode. The results of the calculations show in general very good agreement with the experimentally determined valence-band structures allowing for a clear identification of the observed fea…
The interaction of electrons with crystal lattice vibrations (phonons) and collective charge-density fluctuations (plasmons) influences profoundly the spectral properties of solids revealed by photoemission spectroscopy experiments. Photoemission satellites, for instance, are a prototypical example of quantum emergent behavior that may result from the strong coupling of electronic states to plasmons and phonons. The existence of these spectral features has been verified over energy scales spanning several orders of magnitude (from 50 meV to 15-20 eV) and for a broad class of compounds such as …
In condensed matter, scattering processes determine the transport of charge carriers. In case of heterostructures, interfaces determine many dynamic properties like charge transfer and transport and spin current dynamics. Here we discuss optically excited electron dynamics and their propagation across a lattice-matched, metal-metal interface of single crystal quality. Using femtosecond time-resolved linear photoelectron spectroscopy upon optically pumping different constituents of the heterostructure we establish a technique which probes the electron propagation and its energy relaxation simul…
We have investigated the electronic structure of the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) $Ga_{0.98}Mn_{0.02}P$ and compared it to that of an undoped $GaP$ reference sample, using hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HXPS) and hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HARPES) at energies of about 3 keV. We present experimental data, as well as theoretical calculations, in order to understand the role of the Mn dopant in the emergence of ferromagnetism in this material. Both core-level spectra and angle-resolved or angle-integrated valence spectra are discussed. In particular, the …
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 043201 (2020)] (Ref.1) Liao et al. propose a theory of the interferometric photoemission delay based on the concepts of the photoelectron phase and photoelectron effective mass. The present comment discusses the applicability and limitations of the proposed approach based on an ab initio analysis supported by vast literature. Two central assumptions of the paper are questioned, namely that the photoelectron can be characterized by a phase (have a well-defined phase velocity), and that it can always be ascribed an effective mass Theories based on these c…
The electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices can be tuned by layer thickness and substrate-induced strain. Here, we report on direct measurements of the k-space-resolved electronic structure of buried nickelate layers in superlattices under compressive strain by soft x-ray photoemission. After disentangling strong extrinsic contributions to the angle-dependent signal caused by photoelectron diffraction, we are able to extract Fermi surface information from our data. We find that with decreasing LaNiO3 thickness down to two unit cells (2 uc) quasiparticle cohe…
The electronic structure of the cleaved perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystal was studied in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and inverse photoelectron spectroscopy (IPES). Highly reproducible dispersive features of the valence bands were observed with nice symmetry about the Brillouin zone center and boundaries. The largest dispersion width was found to be ~0.73 eV and ~0.98 eV along the ΓX and ΓM directions, respectively. The effective mass of the holes was estimated to be ~0.59 m0. The quality of the surface was verified by atomic forc…
Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectra are interpreted by combining the energetics and spatial properties of the contributing states. One-step calculations are in excellent agreement with new azimuthal experimental data for GaAs(110). Strong variations caused by the dispersion of the surface bands permit an accurate mapping of the electronic structure. The delocalization of the valence states is discussed analogous to photoelectron diffraction. The spatial origin of the electrons is determined, and found to be strongly energy dependent, with uv excitation probing the bonding region.
We perform time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy on p-type GaAs(110). We observe an optically excited population in the conduction band, from which the time scales of intraband relaxation and surface photovoltage decay are both extracted. Moreover, the photovoltage shift of the valence band intriguingly persists for hundreds of picoseconds at negative delays. By comparing to a recent theoretical study, we reveal that the negative-delay dynamics reflects the interaction of the photoelectrons with a photovoltage-induced electric field outside the sample surface. We develop a concep…
Undoped and slightly Eu-doped SmB6 show the opening of a gap with decreasing temperature below ~150 K. The spectral shapes near the Fermi level (EF) at 15 K have shown strong increase in intensity of a peak at a binding energy (EB) of around 12 meV with decreasing the photon energy (hn) from 17 eV down to 7 eV. Angle resolved spectra of SmB6 measured at hn = 35 eV just after the in-situ cleavage showed clear dispersions of several bands in the EB region from EF to 4 eV. Spin-polarized photoelectron spectra were then measured at 12 K and light incidence angle of ~50 deg. In contrast to the lack…
Angular- or $k$-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in the soft X-ray range gives access to the bulk electronic structure of materials. Here this technique is extended to the spin degree of freedom. A non-magnetic material (tungsten) was chosen, in order to exclude any initial-state spin polarization from exchange-split bands. By measurement of two spin-polarizations for different light helicity, one can distinguish between contributions of optical spin-orientation by circularly-polarized X-rays (Fano componen) and a second component originating from interference of final-state partial waves. …
By adjusting the incidence angle of incoming X-ray near the critical angle of X-ray total reflection, the photoelectron intensity is strongly modulated due to the variation of X-ray penetration depth. Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) combining with near total reflection (NTR) exhibit tunable surface sensitivity, providing depth-resolved information. In this review article, we first describe the experimental setup and specific data analysis process. We then review three different examples which show the broad application of this method. The emphasis is on its applications to correlated oxide he…
Owing to strongly enhanced bulk sensitivity, angle- or momentum-resolved photoemission using X-rays is an emergent powerful tool for electronic structure mapping. A novel full-field k-imaging method with time-of-flight energy detection allowed rapid recording of 4D (EB,k) data arrays (EB binding energy; k final-state electron momentum) in the photon-energy range of 400-1700eV. Arrays for the d-band complex of several transition metals (Mo, W, Re, Ir) reveal numerous spots of strong local intensity enhancement up to a factor of 5. The enhancement is confined to small (EB,k)-regions (dk down to …
Time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) is a powerful method to track the ultrafast dynamics of quasiparticles and electronic bands in energy and momentum space. We present a setup for trARPES with 22.3 eV extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) femtosecond pulses at 50-kHz repetition rate, which enables fast data acquisition and access to dynamics across momentum space with high sensitivity. The design and operation of the XUV beamline, pump-probe setup, and UHV endstation are described in detail. By characterizing the effect of space-charge broadening, we determine an ultimate source…
Similar to light polarization that is selected by a superposition of optical basis, electron spin direction can be controlled through a superposition of spin basis. We investigate such a spin interference occurring in photoemission of the spin-orbit coupled surface state in Bi2Se3 by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with laser light source (laser-SARPES). Our laser-SARPES with three-dimensional spin detection and tunable laser polarization including elliptical and circular polarization enables us to directly visualize how the direction of the fully-polarized p…
We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of bulk 2H-WSe$_2$ for different crystal orientations linked to each other by time-reversal symmetry. We introduce a new observable called time-reversal dichroism in photoelectron angular distributions (TRDAD), which quantifies the modulation of the photoemission intensity upon effective time-reversal operation. We demonstrate that the hidden orbital pseudospin texture leaves its imprint onto TRDAD, due to multiple orbitals interference effects in photoemission. Our experimental results are in quantitative agreement with both tight…
In recent years, strong-field physics in condensed-matter was pioneered as a novel approach for controlling material properties through laser-dressing, as well as for ultrafast spectroscopy via nonlinear light-matter interactions (e.g. harmonic generation). A potential controversy arising from these advancements is that it is sometimes vague which band-picture should be used to interpret strong-field experiments: the field-free bands, the adiabatic (instantaneous) field-dressed bands, Floquet bands, or some other intermediate picture. We here try to resolve this issue by performing 'theoretica…
Photoelectron momentum microscopy is an emerging powerful method for angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), especially in combination with imaging spin filters. These instruments record kx-ky images, typically exceeding a full Brillouin zone. As energy filters double-hemispherical or time-of-flight (ToF) devices are in use. Here we present a new approach for momentum mapping of the full half-space, based on a single hemispherical analyzer (path radius 225 mm). Excitation by an unfocused He lamp yielded an energy resolution of 7.7 meV. The performance is demonstrated by k-imaging of…
The growth of Bi films deposited on both A and B faces of InAs(111) has been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The changes upon Bi deposition of the In 4d and Bi 5d5/2 photoelectron signals allow to get a comprehensive picture of the Bi/InAs(1 1 1) interface. From the initial stages the Bi growth on the A face (In-terminated InAs) is epitaxial, contrary to that on the B face (As- terminated InAs) that proceeds via the formation of islands. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectra show that the…
We show that the degree of spin polarization of photoelectrons from the surface states of topological insulators is 100% if fully-polarized light is used as in typical photoemission measurements, and hence can be significantly "higher" than that of the initial state. Further, the spin orientation of these photoelectrons in general can also be very different from that of the initial surface state and is controlled by the photon polarization; a rich set of predicted phenomena have recently been confirmed by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission experiments.

Here we report on a novel High Harmonic Generation (HHG) light source designed for space charge free ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) on solids. The ultimate overall energy resolution achieved on a polycrystalline Au sample is ~22 meV at 40 K. These results have been obtained at a photon energy of 16.9 eV with a pulse bandwidth of ~19 meV, by varying, up to 200 kHz, the photon pulses repetition rate and the photon fluence on the sample. These features set a new benchmark for tunable narrowband HHG sources. By comparing the PES energy resolution and the photon pulse bandwidth with a p…
We have investigated the effect of imperfect circular polarization on the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy signal, using graphene as a prototypical system that can be understood within tight-binding formalism. We found that perfect left- and right-circularly polarized lights give the same photoelectron intensity distribution around a constant energy contour of the graphene $π$ band. On the other hand, upon breaking the purity of the polarization, photoelectron intensity starts to show circular dichroism, which is enhanced with further increasing the imperfection. Our results predict t…
In the last decade rare-earth hexaborides have been investigated for their fundamental importance in condensed matter physics, and for their applications in advanced technological fields. Among these compounds, LaB$_6$ has a special place, being a traditional d-band metal without additional f- bands. In this paper we investigate the bulk electronic structure of LaB$_6$ using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, measuring both core-level and angle-resolved valence-band spectra. By comparing La 3d core level spectra to cluster model calculations, we identify well-screened peak residing at a lo…
The chemical states of Ni, Zn, and W in microcrystalline NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The recorded spectra of the Ni 2p, Zn 2p, and W 4f photoelectron lines and Ni L$_2$M$_{23}$M$_{45}$, Zn L$_3$M$_{45}$M$_{45}$, and W N$_4$N$_{67}$N$_{7}$ Auger-transition lines show pronounced changes with increasing Zn concentration. The positions of the resolved photoelectron and Auger-transition lines were combined to construct so-called chemical-state plots (Wagner or Auger-parameter plots) for metal ions in solid solutions. With increasing Zn concent…
We demonstrate the structural sensitivity and accuracy of the standing wave technique at a high repetition rate free-electron laser, FLASH at DESY in Hamburg, by measuring the photoelectron yield from the surface SiO2 of Mo/Si multilayers. These experiments open up the possibility to obtain unprecedented structural information of adsorbate and surface atoms with picometer spatial accuracy and femtosecond temporal resolution. This technique will substantially contribute to a fundamental understanding of chemical reactions at catalytic surfaces and the structural dynamics of superconductors.
We have used s- and p-polarized synchrotron radiation to image the electronic structure of epitaxial graphene near the K-point by angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Part of the experimental Fermi surface is suppressed due to the interference of photoelectrons emitted from the two equivalent carbon atoms per unit cell of graphene's honeycomb lattice. Here we show that by rotating the polarization vector, we are able to illuminate this 'dark corridor' indicating that the present theoretical understanding is oversimplified. Our measurements are supported by first-principles phot…
Here we report spin- and angle-resolved photoemission studies of the inert graphene layer formed on the surface of a ferromagnetic material, Ni(111). X-ray photoemission and spin-resolved spectroscopy of secondary electrons reveal that graphene behaves like a protection layer on the Ni(111) surface preventing its reaction with adsorbed oxygen. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of $π$ states of graphene on Ni(111) shows a strong dependence of binding energy of these states on the direction of magnetization of the sample. We conclude that the observed extraordinary high "splitting" up to…
We present a novel theoretical approach to simulate spin, time and angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) from first principles that is applicable to surfaces, thin films, few layer systems, and low-dimensional nanostructures. The method is based on a general formulation in the framework of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to describe the real time-evolution of electrons escaping from a surface under the effect of any external (arbitrary) laser field. By extending the so called t-SURFF method to periodic systems one can calculate the final photoelectron spectrum by…
We present a simplified web-based application for simulating x-ray and photoelectron spectra of transition metals, built around the notion that web-based applications lower the bar for novice users. The application provides a simple interface to simulate x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, incorporating the effects of local electronic interactions, which give rise to multiplets, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field effects, and ligand hybridization/charge transfer. Results can be obtained that highlight the key role o…
We propose angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of aerosol particles as an alternative way to determine the electron mean free path of low energy electrons in solid and liquid materials. The mean free path is obtained from fits of simulated photoemission images to experimental ones over a broad range of different aerosol particle sizes. The principal advantage of the aerosol approach is twofold. Firstly, aerosol photoemission studies can be performed for many different materials, including liquids. Secondly, the size-dependent anisotropy of the photoelectrons can be exploited in addition …

Soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been performed for one of the heavy fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and a $4f$-localized ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ in the paramagnetic phase. The three-dimensional band structures and Fermi surface (FS) shapes of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ have been determined by soft X-ray $hν$-dependent angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The differences in the Fermi surface topology and the non-$4f$ electronic structures between CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeRu$_2$Ge$_2$ are qualitatively explained by the band-structure calculation for both $4f$ itinerant an…
In photoelectron spectroscopy, the measured electron momentum range is intrinsically related to the excitation photon energy. Low photon energies $<10$ eV are commonly encountered in laser-based photoemission and lead to a momentum range that is smaller than the Brillouin zones of most materials. This can become a limiting factor when studying condensed matter with laser-based photoemission. An additional restriction is introduced by widely used hemispherical analyzers that record only electrons photoemitted in a solid angle set by the aperture size at the analyzer entrance. Here, we present a…
We study the manipulation of the photoelectron spin-polarization in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. General rules are established that enable controlling the spin-polarization of photoemitted electrons via light polarization, sample orientation, and photon energy. We demonstrate the $\pm$100% reversal of a single component of the measured spin-polarization vector upon the rotation of light polarization, as well as a full three-dimensional manipulation by varying experimental configuration and photon energy. While a material-specific density-functional theor…
Time- and Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from surfaces can be used to record the dynamics of electrons and holes in condensed matter on ultrafast time scales. However, ultrafast photoemission experiments using extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) light have previously been limited by either space-charge effects, low photon flux, or limited tuning range. In this article, we describe space-charge-free XUV photoelectron spectroscopy experiments with up to 5 nA of average sample current using a tunable cavity-enhanced high-harmonic source operating at 88 MHz repetition rate. The source delivers $ …
Recently discovered materials called three-dimensional topological insulators constitute examples of symmetry protected topological states in the absence of applied magnetic fields and cryogenic temperatures. A hallmark characteristic of these non-magnetic bulk insulators is the protected metallic electronic states confined to the material's surfaces. Electrons in these surface states are spin polarized with their spins governed by their direction of travel (linear momentum), resulting in a helical spin texture in momentum space. Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES)…
