Given a quantum Hamiltonian and its evolution time, the corresponding unitary evolution operator can be constructed in many different ways, corresponding to different trajectories between the desired end-points. A choice among these trajectories can then be made to obtain the best computational complexity and control over errors. As an explicit example, Grover's quantum search algorithm is described as a Hamiltonian evolution problem. It is shown that the computational complexity has a power-law dependence on error when a straightforward Lie-Trotter discretisation formula is used, and it becomes logarithmic in error when reflection operators are used. The exponential change in error control is striking, and can be used to improve many importance sampling methods. The key concept is to make the evolution steps as large as possible while obeying the constraints of the problem. In particular, we can understand why overrelaxation algorithms are superior to small step size algorithms.
This article consists of a short introduction to the quantum approximation optimisation algorithm (QAOA). The mathematical structure of the QAOA, as well as its basic properties, are described. The implementation of the QAOA on MaxCut problems, quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation problems (QUBOs), and Ising-type Hamiltonians is considered in detail.
This paper proposes a highly efficient quantum algorithm for portfolio optimisation targeted at near-term noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers. Recent work by Hodson et al. (2019) explored potential application of hybrid quantum-classical algorithms to the problem of financial portfolio rebalancing. In particular, they deal with the portfolio optimisation problem using the Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm and the Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz. In this paper, we demonstrate substantially better performance using a newly developed Quantum Walk Optimisation Algorithm in find…
Optimizing open quantum system evolution is an important step on the way to achieving quantum computing and quantum thermodynamic tasks. In this article, we approach optimisation via variational principles and derive an open quantum system variational algorithm explicitly for Lindblad evolution in Liouville space. As an example of such control over open system evolution, we control the thermalisation of a qubit attached to a thermal Lindbladian bath with a damping rate $γ$. Since thermalisation is an asymptotic process and the variational algorithm we consider is for fixed time, we present a w…
This paper describes an application of the Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA) to efficiently find approximate solutions for computational problems contained in the polynomially bounded NP optimisation complexity class (NPO PB). We consider a generalisation of the QAOA state evolution to alternating quantum walks and solution-quality-dependent phase shifts, and use the quantum walks to integrate the problem constraints of NPO problems. We apply the recent concept of a hybrid quantum-classical variational scheme to attempt finding the highest expectation value, which contains a hi…

We give quantum speedups of several general-purpose numerical optimisation methods for minimising a function $f:\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}$. First, we show that many techniques for global optimisation under a Lipschitz constraint can be accelerated near-quadratically. Second, we show that backtracking line search, an ingredient in quasi-Newton optimisation algorithms, can be accelerated up to quadratically. Third, we show that a component of the Nelder-Mead algorithm can be accelerated by up to a multiplicative factor of $O(\sqrt{n})$. Fourth, we show that a quantum gradient computation algor…
Computational chemistry is one of the most promising applications of quantum computing, mostly thanks to the development of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. VQE is being studied extensively and numerous optimisations of VQE's sub-processes have been suggested, including the encoding methods and the choice of excitations. Recently, adaptive methods were introduced that apply each excitation iteratively. When it comes to adaptive VQE, research is focused on the choice of excitation pool and the strategies for choosing each excitation. Here we focus on a usually overlooked com…
Solving optimisation problems is a promising near-term application of quantum computers. Quantum variational algorithms leverage quantum superposition and entanglement to optimise over exponentially large solution spaces using an alternating sequence of classically tunable unitaries. However, prior work has primarily addressed discrete optimisation problems. In addition, these algorithms have been designed generally under the assumption of an unstructured solution space, which constrains their speedup to the theoretical limits for the unstructured Grover's quantum search algorithm. In this pap…
This paper presents the Maximum Amplification Optimisation Algorithm (MAOA), a novel quantum algorithm designed for combinatorial optimisation in the restricted circuit depth context of near-term quantum computing. The MAOA first produces a quantum state in which the optimal solutions to a problem are amplified to the maximum extent possible subject to a given restricted circuit depth. Subsequent repeated preparation and measurement of this maximally amplified state produces solutions of the highest quality as efficiently as possible. The MAOA performs considerably better than other near-term …
The intractability of deterministic solutions in solving $\mathcal{NP}$-Hard Combinatorial Optimisation Problems (COP) is well reported in the literature. One mechanism for overcoming this difficulty has been the use of efficient COP non-deterministic approaches. However, with the advent of quantum technology, these modern devices' potential to overcome this tractability limitation requires exploration. This paper juxtaposes classical and quantum optimisation algorithms' performance to solve two common COP, the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) and the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP). Two a…
This paper demonstrates the applicability of the Quantum Walk-based Optimisation Algorithm(QWOA) to the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). Efficient algorithms are developedfor the indexing and unindexing of the solution space and for implementing the required alternatingphase-walk unitaries, which are the core components of QWOA. Results of numerical simulationdemonstrate that the QWOA is capable of producing convergence to near-optimal solutions for arandomly generated 8 location CVRP. Preparation of the amplified quantum state in this exampleproblem is demonstrated to produce high-…
We present a classical algorithm to find approximate solutions to instances of quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation. The algorithm can be seen as an analogue of quantum annealing under the restriction of a product state space, where the dynamical evolution in quantum annealing is replaced with a gradient-descent based method. This formulation is able to quickly find high-quality solutions to large-scale problem instances, and can naturally be accelerated by dedicated hardware such as graphics processing units. We benchmark our approach for large scale problem instances with tuneable har…

In edge computing, suppressing data size is a challenge for machine learning models that perform complex tasks such as autonomous driving, in which computational resources (speed, memory size and power) are limited. Efficient lossy compression of matrix data has been introduced by decomposing it into the product of an integer and real matrices. However, its optimisation is difficult as it requires simultaneous optimisation of an integer and real variables. In this paper, we improve this optimisation by utilising recently developed black-box optimisation (BBO) algorithms with an Ising solver fo…
