We present an analysis of the relation between star formation rate (SFR) surface density (sigmasfr) and mass surface density of molecular gas (sigmahtwo), commonly referred to as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) relation, at its intrinsic spatial scale, i.e. the size of giant molecular clouds (10-150 pc), in the central, high-density regions of four nearby low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We used interferometric IRAM CO(1-0) and CO(2-1), and SMA CO(3-2) emission line maps to derive sigmahtwo and HST-Halpha images to estimate sigmasfr. Each galaxy is characterized by a distinct molecular SF relation at spatial scales between 20 to 200 pc. The K-S relations can be sub-linear, but also super-linear, with slopes ranging from 0.5 to 1.3. Depletion times range from 1 and 2Gyr, compatible with results for nearby normal galaxies. These findings are valid independently of which transition, CO(1-0), CO(2-1), or CO(3-2), is used to derive sigmahtwo. Because of star-formation feedback, life-time of clouds, turbulent cascade, or magnetic fields, the K-S relation might be expected to degrade on small spatial scales (<100 pc). However, we find no clear evidence for this, even on scales as small as 20 pc, and this might be because of the higher density of GMCs in galaxy centers which have to resist higher shear forces. The proportionality between sigmahtwo and sigmasfr found between 10 and 100 Msun/pc2 is valid even at high densities, 10^3 Msun/pc2. However, by adopting a common CO-to-H2 conversion factor (alpha_CO), the central regions of the galaxies have higher sigmasfr for a given gas column than those expected from the models, with a behavior that lies between the mergers/high-redshift starburst systems and the more quiescent star-forming galaxies, assuming that the first ones require a lower value of alpha_CO.
Understanding our Galactic Center is easier with insights from nearby galactic nuclei. Both the star formation activity in nuclear gas disks, driven by bars and nuclear bars, and the fueling of low-luminosity AGN, followed by feedback of jets, driving molecular outflows, were certainly present in our Galactic Center, which now appears to be quenched. Comparisons and diagnostics are reviewed, in particular of m=2 and m=1 modes, lopsidedness, different disk orientations, and fossil evidences of activity and feedback.
We present infrared K'- (2.1 micron) and L'-band (3.8 micron) high-spatial-resolution (<0.3") imaging observations of 17 nearby (z < 0.17) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) assisted with the adaptive optics of the Subaru Telescope. We search for compact red K'-L' color emission as the indicator of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs) due to AGN-heated hot dust emission. Two luminous dual AGN candidates are revealed. Combining these results with those of our previous study, we can state that the detected fraction of luminous dual AGNs in nearby ULIRGs is much less than unity (<20%), ev…
We present the results of CO(J=3-2) on-the-fly mappings of two nearby non-barred spiral galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 7793 with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment at an effective angular resolution of 25". We successfully obtained global distributions of CO(J=3-2) emission over the entire disks at a sub-kpc resolution for both galaxies. We examined the spatially-resolved (sub-kpc) relationship between CO(J=3-2) luminosities (L'CO(3-2)) and infrared (IR) luminosities (LIR) for NGC 628, NGC 7793, and M 83, and compared it with global luminosities of JCMT Nearby Galaxy Legacy Survey sample…

We present spatially resolved BPT mapping of the extended narrow line regions (ENLRs) of seven nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies, using HST narrow band filter imaging. We construct the BPT diagrams using $\leq$ 0.1" resolution emission line images of [O III]$λ$5007, H$α$, [S II]$λ$$λ$6717,6731, and H$β$. By mapping these diagnostic lines according to the BPT classification, we dissect the ENLR into Seyfert, LINER, and star-forming regions. The nucleus and ionization cones are dominated by Seyfert-type emission, which can be interpreted as predominantly photoionization by the active galactic nucleus (A…
We analyse the spatially resolved relation between stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) and star formation rate (SFR) in disk galaxies (i.e. the Main Sequence, MS). The studied sample includes eight nearby face-on grand-design spirals, e.g. the descendant of high-redshift, rotationally-supported star-forming galaxies. We exploit photometric information over 23 bands, from the UV to the far-IR, from the publicly available DustPedia database to build spatially resolved maps of stellar mass and star formation rates on sub-galactic scales of 0.5-1.5 kpc, by performing a spectral energy distribution fitting …
We improve the dynamical black hole (BH) mass estimates in three nearby low-mass early-type galaxies--NGC 205, NGC 5102, and NGC 5206. We use new \hst/STIS spectroscopy to fit the star formation histories of the nuclei in these galaxies, and use these measurements to create local color--mass-to-light ratio (\ml) relations. We then create new mass models from \hst~imaging and combined with adaptive optics kinematics, we use Jeans dynamical models to constrain their BH masses. The masses of the central BHs in NGC 5102 and NGC 5206 are both below one million solar masses and are consistent with o…
We study spatially resolved scaling relations among stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. In a preceding paper Abdurro'uf et al. (2022), we have derived spatially resolved properties of the stellar population and dust by panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using piXedfit. Now, we investigate resolved star formation ($Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$--$Σ_{\rm SFR}$--$Σ_{*}$) and dust scaling relations. While the relations with all sub-galactic regions of the galaxies are reasonably tight ($σ\lesssim 0.3$ dex), we find that most of the scaling relations exhibit galaxy-to-galaxy v…
Reverberation mapping (RM) is one of the most efficient ways to investigate the broad-line region around the central supermassive black holes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A common way of performing the RM is to perform a long term spectroscopic monitoring of AGNs, but the spectroscopic monitoring campaign of a large number of AGNs requires an extensive amount of observing time of medium to large size telescopes. As an alternative way, we present the results of photometric RM with medium-band photometry. As the widths of medium-band filters match well with the widths of AGN broad emission …
I analyze statistics of the stellar population properties for stellar nuclei and bulges of nearby lenticular galaxies in different environments by using panoramic spectral data of the integral-field spectrograph SAURON retrieved from the open archive of Isaac Newton Group. I estimate also the fraction of nearby lenticular galaxies having inner polar gaseous disks by exploring the volume-limited sample of early-type galaxies of the ATLAS-3D survey. By inspecting the two-dimensional velocity fields of the stellar and gaseous components with running tilted-ring technique, I have found 7 new cases…
In this Master's project, the X-ray nuclear properties of a sample of bright nearby galaxies are explored. This is done by matching their comprehensive optical spectroscopic classification to the latest available XMM-Newton catalogue - 3XMM-DR4. The good coverage (approx. 38 per cent) ensures that a statistically representative sample is investigated. All nuclear and morphological subsets found within the original sample of 486 galaxies are encompassed, but early-type galaxies and galaxies with optical features characteristic for active galactic nuclei (AGN) are favoured. The results from the …
In most galaxies, the fluxes of rotational H2 lines strongly correlate with star formation diagnostics (such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAH), suggesting that H2 emission from warm molecular gas is a minor byproduct of star formation. We analyse the optical properties of a sample of 309 nearby galaxies derived from a parent sample of 2,015 objects observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We find a correlation between the [OI]6300 emission-line flux and kinematics and the H2 S(3)9.665um/PAH11.3um. The [OI]6300 kinematics in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can not be explained only by ga…
We present arcsecond-scale observations of the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) of seven nearby Seyfert galaxies observed from the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) using the 31.5 and 37.1 um filters of the Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST). We isolate unresolved emission from the torus and find extended diffuse emission in six 37.1 um residual images in our sample. Using Spitzer/IRS spectra, we determine the dominant mid-infrared (MIR) extended emission source and attribute it to dust in the narrow line region (NLR) or star formation. We compar…
In the sixth of the series of papers reporting on a large reverberation mapping (RM) campaign of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with high accretion rates, we present velocity-resolved time lags of H$β$ emission lines for nine objects observed in the campaign during 2012$-$2013. In order to correct the line-broadening caused by seeing and instruments before the analysis of velocity-resolved RM, we adopt Richardson-Lucy deconvolution to reconstruct their H$β$ profiles. The validity and effectiveness of the deconvolution are checked out by Monte Carlo simulation. Five among the nine objects show c…
We present the results of our ALMA HCN J=3-2 and HCO+ J=3-2 line observations of a uniformly selected sample (>25) of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. The emission of these dense molecular gas tracers and continuum are spatially resolved in the majority of observed ULIRGs for the first time with achieved synthesized beam sizes of ~0.2 arcsec or ~500 pc. In most ULIRGs, the HCN-to-HCO+ J=3-2 flux ratios in the nuclear regions within the beam size are systematically higher than those in the spatially extended regions. The elevated nuclear HCN J=3-2 emission could be r…
This paper investigates the relationship between specific baryon angular momentum $j_\mathrm{b}$ and baryon mass $M_\mathrm{b}$ for a sample of nearby late-type galaxies with resolved HI kinematics. This work roughly doubles the number of galaxies with $M_\mathrm{b} \lesssim 10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$ used to study the $j_\mathrm{b} - M_\mathrm{b}$ relation. Most of the galaxies in the sample have their baryon mass dominated by their gas content, thereby offering $j_\mathrm{b}$ and Mb measures that are relatively unaffected by uncertainties arising from the stellar mass-to-light ratio. Measured HI s…
Post-starburst galaxies are crucial to disentangling the effect of star formation and quenching on galaxy demographics. They comprise, however, a heterogeneous population of objects, described in numerous ways. To obtain a well-defined and uncontaminated sample, we take advantage of spatially resolved spectroscopy to construct an unambiguous sample of E + A galaxies - post-starburst systems with no observed ongoing star formation. Using data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) Survey, in the fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV), we have i…
While emission-line flux ratio diagnostics are the most common technique for identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in optical spectra, applying this approach to single fiber spectra of galaxies can omit entire subpopulations of AGNs. Here, we use spatially resolved spectroscopy from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey to construct a sample of 10 galaxies where Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich line flux ratio diagnostics classify each galaxy's central $3^{\prime\prime}$ spectrum as LINER or star forming, while $>10\%$ of the spaxels in the galaxy's MaNGA footprin…
We analyze 3 mm emission of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 for spatially-resolved structure and spectral properties of the merger nuclei. ALMA archival data at ~0.05" resolution are used for extensive visibility fitting and deep imaging of continuum emission. The data are fitted well with two concentric components for each nucleus, such as two Gaussians or one Gaussian plus one exponential disk. The larger components in individual nuclei are similar in shape and extent, ~100-150 pc, to the cm-wave emission due to supernovae. They are therefore identified with the known starburst nuc…
We study spatially resolved properties (on spatial scales of $\sim 1-2$ kpc out to at least $3$ effective radii) of the stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. The properties of the stellar population and dust are derived by fitting the spatially resolved spectral energy distribution (SED) with more than 20 photometric bands ranging from far-ultraviolet to far-infrared. Our newly developed software piXedfit performs point spread function matching of images, pixel binning, and models the stellar light, dust attenuation, dust emission, and emission from a dusty torus heated by an act…
We present a detailed study of AGN feedback in the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. We illustrate the data and techniques needed to determine the mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of the outflowing ionized gas as a function of position in the NLR. We find that the mass outflow rate peaks at a value of 3 solar masses per year at a distance of 70 pc from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), which is about 10 times the outflow rate coming from inside 13 pc, and 230 times the mass accretion rate inferred from the bolometric luminosity of NGC 4151. Thus, most…
Reverberation mapping probes the structure of the broad emission-line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN). The kinematics of the BLR gas can be used to measure the mass of the central supermassive black hole. The main uncertainty affecting black hole mass determinations is the structure of the BLR. We present a new method for reverberation mapping based on regularized linear inversion (RLI) that includes modelling of the AGN continuum light curves. This enables fast calculation of velocity-resolved response maps to constrain BLR structure. RLI allows for negative response, such as whe…
Mid-Infrared Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies: Nuclear Obscuration and Connections to Hidden Tidal Disruption Events and Changing-Look Active Galactic Nuclei
We present spatially resolved mass outflow rate measurements ($\dot M_{out}$) for the narrow line region of Markarian 34, the nearest Compton-thick type 2 quasar (QSO2). Spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and at Apache Point Observatory reveal complex kinematics, with distinct signatures of outflow and rotation within 2 kpc of the nucleus. Using multi-component photoionization models, we find that the outflow contains a total ionized gas mass of $M \approx 1.6 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}$. Combining this with the kinematics yields a peak outflow rate of $\dot M_{out} \approx 2.0 \pm 0.…
We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being relatively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (< 100 km/s). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can accommodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were take…
We present MUSE Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of five individual HII regions in two giant (>100 pc in radius) star-forming complexes in the low-metallicity ($Z$~0.33 $Z_{\odot}$) nearby (D ~ 2 Mpc) dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 300. We combine the IFU data with high spatial resolution HST photometry to demonstrate the extraction of stellar spectra and the classification of individual stars from ground-based data at the distance of 2 Mpc. For the two star-forming complexes, in which no O-type stars had previously been identified, we find a total of 13 newly identified O-type stars in the mas…
We discuss the dense molecular gas in central regions of nearby Seyfert galaxies, and report new arcsec resolution observations of HCN(1-0) and HCO$^+$(1-0) for 3 objects. In NGC 3079 the lines show complex profiles as a result of self-absorption and saturated continuum absorption. H$^{13}$CN reveals the continuum absorption profile, with a peak close to the galaxy's systemic velocity that traces disk rotation, and a second feature with a blue wing extending to $-350$km s$^{-1}$ that most likely traces a nuclear outflow. The morphological and spectral properties of the emission lines allow us …
A correlation between the 24 μm continuum and the [NII] 205 μm line emission may arise if both quantities trace the star formation activity on spatially-resolved scales within a galaxy, yet has so far only been observed in the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891. We therefore assess whether the [NII] 205 - 24 μm emission correlation has some physical origin or is merely an artefact of line-of-sight projection effects in an edge-on disc. We search for the presence of a correlation in Herschel and Spitzer observations of two nearby face-on galaxies, M51 and M83, and the interacting Antennae gal…
We present mosaicked long-slit spectral maps of 18 nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), 2 LINERs, and 4 star-forming galaxies. With the resulting data cubes taken using the Kast dual spectrograph on the 3 m Shane telescope of the Lick Observatory, we measure the aperture effects on the spectroscopic classification of AGNs. With more starlight included in a larger aperture, the nuclear spectrum that is Seyfert-like may become contaminated. We generated standard spectroscopic classification diagrams in different observing apertures. These show quantitatively how the ensemble of Seyferts migrate…
We present high-resolution observations (0".2-1".5) of multiple dense gas tracers, HCN and HCO$^+$ ($J$ = 1-0, 3-2, and 4-3), HNC ($J$ = 1-0), and CS ($J$ = 7-6) lines, toward the nearby luminous infrared galaxy VV 114 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. All lines are robustly detected at the central gaseous filamentary structure including the eastern nucleus and the Overlap region, the collision interface of the progenitors. We found that there is no correlation between star formation efficiency and dense gas fraction, indicating that the amount of dense gas does not simply…
We present the first spatially resolved mass outflow rate measurements ($\dot M_{out}$) of the optical emission line gas in the narrow line region (NLR) of a Seyfert 2 galaxy, Markarian 573. Using long slit spectra and [O III] imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and Apache Point Observatory in conjunction with emission line diagnostics and Cloudy photoionization models, we find a peak outflow rate of $\dot M_{out} \approx$ 3.4 $\pm$ 0.5 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ at a distance of 210 pc from the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). The outflow extends to distances of 600 pc from the nucleus …
We present and analyze spatially-resolved maps for the observed $V$- and $g$-band to 3.6$μ$m flux ratios and the inferred dust extinction values, $A_V$, for a sample of 257 nearby NGC and IC galaxies. Flux ratio maps are constructed using PSF-matched mosaics of SDSS $g$- and $r$-band images and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6$μ$m mosaics, with all pixels contaminated by foreground stars or background objects masked out. By applying the $β_V$ method (Tamura et al. 2009, 2010), which was recently calibrated as a function of redshift and morphological type by Kim, Jansen, & Windhorst (2017), dust extinction map…
We study the velocity dispersion profiles of the nuclei of NGC 1326, 2685, 5273 and 5838 in the CO first overtone band. There is evidence for a black hole (BH) in NGC 1326 and 5838. Gas is seen flowing out of the nuclear region of NGC 5273. We put upper limits on the nuclear BHs responsible for its activity and that of NGC 2685.
The dust extinction curves toward individual sight lines in M33 are derived for the first time with a sample of reddened O-type and B-type supergiants obtained from the LGGS. The observed photometric data are obtained from the LGGS, PS1 Survey, UKIRT, PHATTER Survey, GALEX, Swift/UVOT and XMM-SUSS. We combine the intrinsic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) obtained from the ATLAS9 and Tlusty stellar model atmosphere extinguished by the model extinction curves from the silicate-graphite dust model to construct model SEDs. The extinction traces are distributed along the arms in M33, and the d…
We present a $^{13}\mathrm{CO} (J = 1 \rightarrow 0)$ mapping survey of 12 nearby galaxies from the CARMA STING sample. The line intensity ratio $\mathcal{R} \equiv I[^{12}\mathrm{CO} (J = 1 \rightarrow 0)]/I[^{13}\mathrm{CO} (J = 1 \rightarrow 0)]$ is derived to study the variations in molecular gas properties. For 11 galaxies where it can be measured with high significance, the spatially resolved $\mathcal{R}$ on (sub-)kiloparsec scales varies by up to a factor of 3--5 within a galaxy. Lower $\mathcal{R}$ values are usually found in regions with weaker $^{12}\rm CO$. We attribute this appare…
Dusty, neutral outflows and inflows are a common feature of nearby star-forming galaxies. We characterize these flows in eight galaxies -- mostly AGN -- selected for their widespread NaI D signatures from the Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7). This survey employs deep, wide field-of-view integral field spectroscopy at moderate spectral resolution (R=7000 at NaI D). We significantly expand the sample of sightlines in external galaxies in which the spatially-resolved relationship has been studied between cool, neutral gas properties -- N(NaI), Weq(NaI D) -- and du…
We present a comprehensive analysis of the multi-phase structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the stellar kinematics in the edge-on nearby galaxy UGC 10205 using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data taken with MEGARA at the GTC. We explore both the neutral and the ionized gas phases using the interstellar Na ${\small I}$ D doublet absorption (LR$-$V set-up, R $\sim$ 6000) and the H$α$ emission line (HR$-$R set-up, R $\sim$ 18000), respectively. The high-resolution data show the complexity of the H$α$ emission line profile revealing the detection of up to three kinematically distinct …
A relationship between dust-reprocessed light from recent star formation and the amount of star-forming gas in a galaxy produces a correlation between WISE 12 $μ$m emission and CO line emission. Here we explore this correlation on kiloparsec scales with CO(1-0) maps from EDGE-CALIFA matched in resolution to WISE 12 $μ$m images. We find strong CO-12 $μ$m correlations within each galaxy and we show that the scatter in the global CO-12 $μ$m correlation is largely driven by differences from galaxy to galaxy. The correlation is stronger than that between star formation rate and H$_2$ surface densit…
Galaxy mergers play a crucial role in the formation of massive galaxies and the buildup of their bulges. An important aspect of the merging process is the in-spiral of the supermassive black-holes (SMBHs) to the centre of the merger remnant and the eventual formation of a SMBH binary. If both the SMBHs are accreting they will form a dual or binary active galactic nucleus (DAGN). The final merger remnant is usually very bright and shows enhanced star formation. In this paper we summarize the current sample of DAGN from previous studies and describe methods that can be used to identify strong DA…

We investigate spatially-resolved emission-line ratios in a sample of 219 galaxies ($0.6<z<1.3$) detected using the G102 grism on the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} Wide Field Camera 3, taken as part of the CANDELS Ly$α$ Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey, to measure ionization profiles and search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We analyze \OIII\ and \Hb\ emission-line maps, enabling us to spatially resolve the \OIIIHb\ emission-line ratio across the galaxies in the sample. We compare the \OIIIHb\ ratio in galaxy centers and outer annular regions to measure ionization grad…
With the development of modern technologies such as IFUs, it is possible to obtain data cubes in which one produces images with spectral resolution. To extract information from them can be quite complex, and hence the development of new methods of data analysis is desirable. We briefly describe a method of analysis of data cubes (data from single field observations, containing two spatial and one spectral dimension) that uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to express the data in the form of reduced dimensionality, facilitating efficient information extraction from very large data sets. We …
We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array molecular line observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, from SWAN: "Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies". SWAN is a molecular line survey at centimeter wavelengths designed to reveal the physical conditions of star forming gas over a range of star forming galaxies. NGC 253 has been observed in four 1GHz bands from 21 to 36 GHz at 6" ($\sim100$pc) spatial and 3.5 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution. In total we detect 19 transitions from seven molecular and atomic species. We have targeted the metastable inversion transitions of ammon…
We report high spatial resolution observations of Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) in the nearby spiral galaxies NGC 6946, M101 and NGC 628 obtained with the CARMA telescope. We observed CO(1-0) over regions with active star formation, and higher resolution observations of CO(2-1) have allowed us to resolve some of the largest GMCs. Using a Bayesian fitting approach, we generate scaling relations for the sizes, line widths, and virial masses of the structures identified in this work. We do not find evidence for a tight power law relation between size and line width, although the limited dynamic r…
We present detailed image analysis of rest-frame optical images of 235 low-redshift ($z \leq$ 0.35) type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. The high-resolution images enable us to perform rigorous two-dimensional image modeling to decouple the luminous central point source from the host galaxy, which, when warranted, is further decomposed into its principal structural components (bulge, bar, and disk). In many cases, care must be taken to account for structural complexities such as spiral arms, tidal features, and overlapping or interacting companion gala…
We present the MaNGA FIREFLY Value-Added-Catalogue (VAC) - a catalogue of ~3.7 million spatially resolved stellar population properties across 10,010 nearby galaxies from the final data release of the MaNGA survey. The full spectral fitting code firefly is employed to derive parameters such as stellar ages, metallicities, stellar and remnant masses, star formation histories, star formation rates and dust attenuation. In addition to Voronoi-binned measurements, our VAC also provides global properties, such as central values and radial gradients. Two variants of the VAC are available: presenting…
We present a study of the excitation conditions and metallicity of ionized gas (Z_gas) in eight nearby barred and unbarred spiral galaxies from the VIRUS-P Exploration of Nearby Galaxies (VENGA) survey, which provides high spatial sampling and resolution (median ~ 387 pc), large coverage from the bulge to outer disc, broad wavelength range (3600-6800 Ang.), and medium spectral resolution (~ 120 km s^-1 at 5000 Ang.). Our results are: (1) We present high resolution gas excitation maps to differentiate between regions with excitation typical of Seyfert, LINER, or recent star formation. We find L…
We present 3, 15, and 33 GHz imaging towards galaxy nuclei and extranuclear star-forming regions using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array as part of the Star Formation in Radio Survey. With $3-33$ GHz radio spectra, we measured the spectral indices and corresponding thermal (free-free) emission fractions for a sample of 335 discrete regions having significant detections in at least two radio bands. After removing 14 likely background galaxies, we find that the median thermal fraction at 33 GHz is $92 \pm 0.8\%$ with a median absolute deviation of $11\%$, when a two-component power-law model i…
The global Schmidt law of star formation provides a power-law relation between the surface densities of star-formation rate (SFR) and gas, and successfully explains plausible scenarios of galaxy formation and evolution. However, star formation being a multi-scale process, requires spatially-resolved analysis for a better understanding of the physics of star formation. It has been shown that the removal of a diffuse background from SFR tracers, such as H$α$, far-ultraviolet (FUV), infrared, leads to an increase in the slope of the sub-galactic Schmidt relation. We reinvestigate the local Schmid…
We present the first data release of the MaNGA-ARO Survey of CO Targets (MASCOT), an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey conducted at the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). We measure the CO(1-0) line emission in a sample of 187 nearby galaxies selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey that has obtained integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy for a sample of ~ 10,000 galaxies at low redshift. The main goal of MASCOT is to probe the molecular gas content of star-forming galaxies with stellar masses > 10^9.5 M_solar and with associated MaNGA IFU observations a…
Much of the baryons in galaxy groups are thought to have been driven out to large distances ($\gtrsim$$R_{500}$) by feedback, but there are few constraining observations of this extended gas. This work presents the resolved Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) profiles for a stacked sample of 10 nearby galaxy groups within the mass range log$_{10}(M_{500}[M_{\odot}]) = 13.6 -13.9$. We measured the SZ profiles using the publicly available $y$-map from the Planck Collaboration as well as our own $y$-maps constructed from more recent versions of $Planck$ data. The $y$-map extracted from the latest data relea…
Based on the Chandra data archive as of March 2016, we have identified 314 candidate active galactic nuclei in 719 galaxies located closer than 50 Mpc, among them late-type (Hubble types Sc and later) galaxies that previously had been classified from optical observations as containing star-forming (H II) nuclei. These late-type galaxies comprise a valuable subsample to search for low-mass (<~ 10^6 solar masses) central black holes. For the sample as a whole, the overall dependence of the fraction of active nuclei on galaxy type and nuclear spectral classification is consistent with previous re…
