We present the theoretical and mathematical foundations of stability analysis for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at Dirac points of a honeycomb optical lattice. The combination of s-wave scattering for bosons and lattice interaction places constraints on the mean-field description, and hence on vortex configurations in the Bloch-envelope function near the Dirac point. A full derivation of the relativistic linear stability equations (RLSE) is presented by two independent methods to ensure veracity of our results. Solutions of the RLSE are used to compute fluctuations and lifetimes of vortex solutions of the nonlinear Dirac equation, which include Mermin-Ho and Anderson-Toulouse skyrmions, with lifetime $\approx 4$ seconds. Beyond vortex stabilities the RLSE provide insight into the character of collective superfluid excitations, which we find to encode several established theories of physics. In particular, the RLSE reduce to the Andreev equations, in the nonrelativistic and semiclassical limits, the Majorana equation, inside vortex cores, and the Dirac-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, when nearest-neighbor interactions are included. Furthermore, by tuning a mass gap, relative strengths of various spinor couplings, for the small and large quasiparticle momentum regimes, we obtain weak-strong Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductivity, as well as fundamental wave equations such as Schrödinger, Dirac, Klein-Gordon, and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Our results apply equally to a strongly spin-orbit coupled BEC in which the Laplacian contribution can be neglected.
We demarcate the unstable regimes of superfluids in a Rabi-coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of optical lattices. We find that the Rabi coupling can stabilize superfluids. A significant separation between Landau and dynamical instabilities is presented in a Rabi-coupled Zeeman lattice.
In this work, we present a theoretical study for the collective oscillation modes, i.e. quadrupole, radial and axial mode, of a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in harmonic trapping potentials with cylindrical symmetry of experimental interest. To this end, we start from the coupled superfluid hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures and use the scaling theory that has been developed for a coupled system. The collective oscillation modes of Bose…
We discuss the evolution from BCS to Bose superfluidity for ultracold fermions in two-dimensions and in the presence of simultaneous spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. We analyze several thermodynamic properties to characterize different superfluid phases including pressure, compressibility, induced polarization, and spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we compute the momentum distribution and construct topological invariants for each of the superfluid phases.
We study the Landau damping in Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture at finite temperature. We find that at low temperature, the Landau damping rate will be exponentially suppressed at both the BCS side and the BEC side of Fermi superfluid. The momentum dependence of the damping rate is obtained, and it is quite different from the BCS side to the BEC side. The relations between our result and collective mode experiment in the recently realized Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture are also discussed.
The standard mean-field theory for the Mott insulator-superfluid phase transition is not sufficient to describe the Mott insulator-paired superfluid phase transition. Therefore, by restricting the two-species Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to the subspace of paired particles, and using perturbation theory, here we derive an analytic mean-field expression for the Mott insulator-paired superfluid transition boundary.
In an equilibrium three-dimensional (3D) disordered condensate, it's well established that disorder can generate an amount of normal fluid equaling to $\frac{4}{3}$ of the condensate depletion. The concept that the superfluid is more volatile to the existence of disorder than the condensate is crucial to the understanding of Bose glass phase. In this Letter, we show that, by bringing a weakly disordered 3D condensate to nonequilibrium regime via a quantum quench in the interaction, disorder can destroy superfluid significantly more, leading to a steady state in which the normal fluid density f…
In this letter, to reveal the effect of quasi-particle interactions in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, we consider the lifetime of quasi-particle of Bose superfluid due to its interaction with quasi-particles in Fermi superfluid. We find that this damping rate, i.e. inverse of the lifetime, has quite different threshold behavior at the BCS and the BEC side of the Fermi superfluid. The damping rate is a constant nearby the threshold momentum in the BCS side, while it increases rapidly in the BEC side. This is because in the BCS side the decay processe is restricted by constant density-of-state…
Superfluid $^4$He at a finite temperature is described by the two-fluid model with the normal fluid component and the superfluid component. We formulate the two-fluid model for two-component BECs, namely two-superfluid model, starting from the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The two-superfluid model well corresponds to the two-fluid model in superfluid $^4$He.In a special condition, the two sound modes in the two-superfluid model behave like first and second sounds in the two-fluid model of superfluid $^4$He.
Quantum criticality near a tricritical point (TCP) is studied in the two-component Bose-Hubbard model on square lattices. The existence of quantum TCP on a boundary of superfluid-insulator transition is confirmed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, we analytically derive the quantum tricritical behaviors on the basis of an effective field theory. We find two significant features of the quantum tricriticality, that are the chemical potential dependence of the superfluid transition temperature and a strong density fluctuation. We suggest that these features are directly observable in e…
We investigate the structure and dynamics of a rotating superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture (SBFM) made of superfluid bosons and two-component (spin up and down) superfluid fermions. A ground-state phase diagram for the nonrotating case of a SBFM with specific parameters is given, where the ground-state configuration of a nonrotating SBFM is mainly determined by the boson-fermion interaction. For the rotating case of a SBFM with a sufficiently large rotation frequency, we show that the system supports a mixed phase and three typical layer separated phases. In particular, the visible vortex formation…
We perform a numeric study (Worm algorithm Monte Carlo simulations) of ultracold two-component bosons in two-dimensional optical lattices. We study how the Mott insulator to superfluid transition is affected by the presence of a second superfluid bosonic species. We find that, at fixed interspecies interaction, the upper and lower boundaries of the Mott lobe are differently modified. The lower boundary is strongly renormalized even for relatively low filling factor of the second component and moderate (interspecies) interaction. The upper boundary, instead, is affected only for large enough fi…
This article reviews recent developments in the physics of quantized vortices in superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Quantized vortices appear in low-temperature quantum condensed systems as the direct product of Bose-Einstein condensation. Quantized vortices were first discovered in superfluid 4He in the 1950s, and have since been studied with a primary focus on the quantum hydrodynamics of this system. Since the discovery of superfluid 3He in 1972, quantized vortices characteristic of the anisotropic superfluid have been studied theoretically and observed experimentally u…
The two known mechanisms for superflow are the gradient of the U(1) phase and the spin-orbit-gauge symmetry. We find the third mechanism, namely a spatial variation of the order-parameter morphology protected by a hidden su(2) symmetry in a nonmagnetic spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate. Possible experimental situations are also discussed.
It is numerically investigated whether a deformable object can propel itself in a superfluid. Articulated bodies and multi-component condensates are examined as swimmers. An articulated two-body swimmer cannot obtain locomotion without emitting excitations. More flexible swimmers can do so without the need to excite waves.
By means of the method of the effective potential, the phase transitions from the Mott insulating state to either the atomic or the dimer superfluid state in the three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gas are analyzed. Due to the appearance of the Feshbach resonance coupling between the two kinds of order parameters in the derived effective potential function, it is found that the continuous Mott insulator-to-superfluid transitions can be preempted by first-order ones. Since the employed approach can provide accurate predictions of phase boundaries in the strong coupling limit, where t…
We study the superfluidity of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by computing its Bogoliubov excitations, which are found to consist of two branches: one is gapless and phonon-like at long wavelength; the other is typically gapped. These excitations imply a superfluidity that has two new features: ({\it i}) due to the absence of the Galilean invariance, one can no longer define the critical velocity of superfluidity independent of the reference frame; ({\it ii}) the superfluidity depends not only on whether the speed of the BEC exceeds a critical value, but also on {\it cross …
We theoretically investigate the pair-superfluid phase of two-component ultracold gases with negative inter-species interactions in an optical lattice. We establish the phase diagram for filling $n=1$ at zero and finite temperature, by applying Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, and confirm the stability of pair-superfluidity for asymmetric hopping of the two species. While the pair superfluid is found to be robust in the presence of a harmonic trap, we observe that it is destroyed already by a small population imbalance of the two species.
We study the localization of collective pair excitations in weakly-interacting Bose superfluids in one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices. The localization diagram is first determined numerically. For intermediate interaction and quasiperiodic amplitude we find a sharp localization transition, with extended low-energy states and localized high-energy states. We then develop an analytical treatment, which allows us to quantitatively map the localization transition into that of an effective multiharmonic quasiperiodic system.
We analyze the excitation spectrum of a superfluid Bose-Einstein condensate rotating in a ring trap. We identify two important branches of the spectrum related to outer and inner edge surface modes that lead to the instability of the superfluid. Depending on the initial circulation of the annular condensate, either the outer or the inner modes become first unstable. This instability is crucially related to the superfluid nature of the rotating gas. In particular we point out the existence of a maximal circulation above which the superflow decays spontaneously, which cannot be explained by invo…
We consider a mixture of two-component Fermi and (one-component) dipolar Bose gases in which both dipolar interaction and s-wave scattering between fermions of opposite spins are tunable. We show that in the long wavelength limit, the anisotropy in the Fermi-Fermi interaction induced by phonons of the dipolar condensate can strongly enhance the scattering in the triplet channel. We investigate in detail the conditions for achieving optimal critical temperature at which the triplet superfluid begins to compete with the singlet superfluid.
We study superfluidity in the 1D Bose-Hubbard model using a variational matrix product state technique. We determine the superfluid density as a function of the Hubbard parameters by calculating the energy cost of phase twists in the thermodynamic limit. As the system is critical, correlation functions decay as power laws and the entanglement entropy grows with the bond dimension of our variational state. We relate the resulting scaling laws to the superfluid density. We compare two different algorithms for optimizing the infinite matrix product state and develop a physical explanation why one…
The full statistical distribution of the superfluid fraction characterizing one-dimensional Bose gases in random potentials is discussed. Rare configurations with extreme fluctuations of the disorder potential can fragment the condensate and reduce the superfluid fraction to zero. The resulting bimodal probability distribution for the superfluid fraction is calculated numerically in the quasi-1D mean-field regime of ultracold atoms in laser speckle potentials. Using extreme-value statistics, an analytical scaling of the zero-superfluid probability as function of disorder strength, disorder cor…
Based on a unified theoretical treatment of the 1D Bogoliubov-de Genes equations, the superfluidity phenomenon of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) loaded into trapped optical lattice is studied. Within the perturbation regime, an all-analytical framework is presented enabling a straightforward phenomenological mapping of the collective excitation and oscillation character of a trapped BEC where the available experimental configurations also fit.
We reveal that the p-wave superfluid can be realized in a mixture of fermionic and F=1 bosonic gases. We derive a general set of the gap equations for gaps in the s- and p-channels. It is found that the spin-spin bose-fermi interactions favor the p-wave pairing and naturally suppress the pairing in the s-channel. The gap equations for the polar phase of p-wave superfluid fermions are numerically solved. It is shown that a pure p-wave superfluid can be observed in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics.
In superfluid systems several sound modes can be excited, as for example first and second sound in liquid helium. Here, we excite propagating and standing waves in a uniform two-dimensional Bose gas and we characterize the propagation of sound in both the superfluid and normal regime. In the superfluid phase, the measured speed of sound is well described by a two-fluid hydrodynamic model, and the weak damping rate is well explained by the scattering with thermal excitations. In the normal phase the sound becomes strongly damped due to a departure from hydrodynamic behavior.
We study the two-dimensional weakly repulsive Bose gas at zero temperature in the presence of correlated disorder. Using large-scale simulations, we show that the low-energy Bogoliubov cumulative density of states remains quadratic up to a critical disorder strength, beyond which a power law with disorder-dependent exponent $β<2$ sets in. We associate this threshold behavior with the transition from superfluid to Bose glass, and compare the resulting mean-field phase diagram with scaling laws and the Thomas-Fermi percolation threshold of the mean-field density profile.
We calculate the phase diagram of identical fermions in a 2-dimensional (2D) lattice immersed in a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fermions exchange density fluctuations in the BEC, which gives rise to an attractive induced interaction. The resulting zero temperature phase diagram exhibits topological $p_x+ip_y$ superfluid phases as well as a phase separation region. We show how to use the flexibility of the Bose-Fermi mixture to tune the induced interaction, so that it maximises the pairing between nearest neighbour sites, whereas phase separation originating from long range interactio…
We show that a two-dimensional (2D) spin-polarised Fermi gas immersed in a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) constitutes a very promising system to realise a $p_x+ip_y$ superfluid. The fermions attract each other via an induced interaction mediated by the bosons, and the resulting pairing is analysed with retardation effects fully taken into account. This is further combined with Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theory to obtain reliable results for the superfluid critical temperature. We show that both the strength and the range of the induced interaction can be tuned experimentally, whi…
We investigate the effect exerted by spin-polarized fermions on the interaction between superfluid bosons for a Bose-Fermi mixture residing on an optical lattice, with particular emphasis on the possibility of an induced phase-separation. Using a set of microscopic parameters relevant to a $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixture, we show how the phase-separation criterion may be directly probed by means of the critical superfluid velocity of the bosonic condensate. We report quantitative results for the magnitude of the superfluid velocity and its dependence on the trap depth, the boson-fermion interaction…
We report the first all-optical production of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture with two spin states of $^6$Li (fermion) and one spin state of $^7$Li (boson) under the resonant magnetic field of the s-wave Feshbach resonance of the fermions. Fermions are cooled efficiently by evaporative cooling and they serve as coolant for bosons. As a result, a superfluid mixture can be achieved by using a simple experimental apparatus and procedures, as in the case of the all-optical production of a single Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We show that the all-optical method enables us to realize variety of ul…
Quasicrystal is a class of ordered structures defying conventional classification of solid crystals and may carry classically forbidden (e.g., 5-fold) rotational symmetries. In view of long-sought supersolids, a natural question is whether a superfluid can spontaneously form quasicrystalline order that is not possessed by the underlying Hamiltonian, forming "superfluid-quasicrystals". Here we show that a superfluid-quasicrystal stripe state with the minimal 5-fold rotational symmetry can be realized as the ground state of a Bose-Einstein condensate within a practical experimental scheme. There…
Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) time-dependent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and density functional (DF) equation for a Fermi superfluid at the unitarity and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limits, we derive effective one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) mean-field equations, respectively, for the dynamics of a trapped cigar- and disk-shaped BEC and Fermi superfluid by using the adiabatic approximation. The reduced 1D and 2D equations for a cigar- and disk-shaped Fermi superfluid have simple analytic nonlinear terms and at unitarity produce res…
Superconductivity and superfluidity of fermionic and bosonic systems are remarkable many-body quantum phenomena. In liquid helium and dilute gases, Bose and Fermi superfluidity has been observed separately, but producing a mixture in which both the fermionic and the bosonic components are superfluid is challenging. Here we report on the observation of such a mixture with dilute gases of two Lithium isotopes, 6Li and 7Li. We probe the collective dynamics of this system by exciting center-of-mass oscillations that exhibit extremely low damping below a certain critical velocity. Using high precis…
We consider quantized vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and three-component Fermi gases with attractive interactions. In these systems, the vortex core can be either empty (normal in the fermion case) or filled with another superfluid. We determine critical values of the parameters -- chemical potentials, scattering lengths and, for Fermi gases, temperature -- at which a phase transition between the two types of vortices occurs. Population imbalance can lead to superfluid core (coreless) vorticity in multicomponent superfluids which otherwise support only usual vortices. For …
We study mixtures of a population-imbalanced strongly-interacting Fermi gas and of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas at zero temperature. In the homogeneous case, we find that the Chandrasekhar-Clogston critical polarization for the onset of instability of Fermi superfluidity is enhanced due to the interaction with the bosons. Predictions for the critical polarization are also given in the trapped case, with a special focus to the situation of equal Fermi-Bose and Bose-Bose coupling constants, where the density of fermions becomes flat in the center of the trap. This regime can be realized experim…
We derive the Josephson relation for a dilute Bose gas in the framework of an auxiliary-field resummation of the theory in terms of the normal- and anomalous-density condensates. The mean-field phase diagram of this theory features two critical temperatures, T_c and $T^*, associated with the presence in the system of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and superfluid state, respectively. In this context, the Josephson relation shows that the superfluid density is related to a second order parameter, the square of the anomalous-density condensate. This is in contrast with the corresponding resul…
An iterative scheme based on the kernel polynomial method is devised for the efficient computation of the one-body density matrix of weakly interacting Bose gases within Bogoliubov theory. This scheme is used to analyze the coherence properties of disordered bosons in one and two dimensions. In the one-dimensional geometry, we examine the quantum phase transition between superfluid and Bose glass at weak interactions, and we recover the scaling of the phase boundary that was characterized using a direct spectral approach by Fontanesi et al. [Phys. Rev. A 81, 053603 (2010)]. The kernel polynomi…
Liquid helium 4 had been the only bosonic superfluid available in experiments for a long time. This situation was changed in 1995, when a new superfluid was born with the realization of the Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold atomic gases. The liquid helium 4 is strongly interacting and has no spin; there is almost no way to change its parameters, such as interaction strength and density. The new superfluid, Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), offers various aspects of advantages over liquid helium. On the one hand, BEC is weakly interacting and has spin degrees of freedom. On the other hand, …
We discuss the finite-temperature phase diagram in the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard (BH) model in the strong correlation regime, relevant for Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, by employing a quantum rotor approach. In systems with strong on site repulsive interactions, the rotor U(1) phase variable dual to the local boson density emerges as an important collective field. After establishing the connection between the rotor construction and the the on--site interaction in the BH model the robust effective action formalism is developed which allows us to study the superfluid phase …
Recent experimental realizations of superfluid mixtures of Bose and Fermi quantum gases provide a unique platform for exploring diverse superfluid phenomena. We study dipole oscillations of a double superfluid in a cigar-shaped optical dipole trap, consisting of $^{41}$K and $^{6}$Li atoms with a large mass imbalance, where the oscillations of the bosonic and fermionic components are coupled via the Bose-Fermi interaction. In our high-precision measurements, the frequencies of both components are observed to be shifted from the single-species ones, and exhibit unusual features. The frequency s…
We perform the comprehensive comparison of properties of the condensate and superfluid densities for the $N$-component three-dimensional Bose gas with the symmetric inter- and intraspecies short-range interaction between particles. In particular, based on the large-$N$ expansion approach for many-boson systems we obtain general expression for density of the superfluid component that at very low temperatures reproduce the well-know Landau's formula and non-trivially includes the thermal fluctuations in the finite-temperature region, and compare it to the condensate density calculated previously…
In one-dimensional systems a twisted superfluid phase is found which is induced by a spontaneous breaking of the time-reversal symmetry. Using the density-matrix renormalization group allows us to show that the excitation energy gap closes exponentially causing a quasi-degenerate ground state. The two degenerate ground states are connected by the time-reversal symmetry which manifests itself in an alternating complex phase of the long-range correlation function. The quantum phase transition to the twisted superfluid is driven by pair tunneling processes in an extended Bose-Hubbard model. The p…
We report direct evidence of superfluidity in a quasi two-dimensional Bose gas by observing its dynamical response to a collective excitation. Relying on a novel local correlation analysis, we are able to probe inhomogeneous clouds and reveal their local dynamics. We identify in this way the superfluid and thermal phases inside the gas and locate the boundary at which the Berezinskii--Kosterlitz--Thouless crossover occurs. This new analysis also allows to evidence the coupling of the two fluids which induces at finite temperatures damping rates larger than the usual Landau damping.
We develop the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory at finite temperature for Bose gas trapped in the two dimensional optical lattices. The on-site energy is considered low enough that the gas presents superfluid properties. We obtain the condensate density as function of the temperature neglecting the anomalous density in the thermodynamics equations. The condensate fraction provide two critical temperature. Below the temperature $T_{C1}$ there is one condensate fraction. Above two possible fractions merger up to the critical temperature $T_{C2}$. Then the gas provides an first order transition at …
Trapped ultra-cold atom experiments provide a unique opportunity to understand Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures occurring in contrasting areas of physics. At present there are several atom-trap experiments that could potentially explore this superfluid-mixture regime, thus warranting a detailed understanding of the occurrence and stability of various possible thermodynamic phases in the mixture. In the present work, we therefore construct the finite temperature phase diagram of an interacting atomic mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids. Our study reveals a unique region of phase space, where th…
The p-wave superfluid is characterized by nontrivial topological characteristics essential for fault-tolerant quantum state manipulation. However, the practical realization of the p-wave state remains a challenging problem. We study the s- and p-wave superfluidity in mixtures of fermionic and spinor bosonic gases and derive a general set of the gap equations for these superfluid states. Numerically solving the gap equations for the s-wave state, we quantify the physical conditions for the realization of the pure p-wave state in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics in the absence of …
We study the quantum phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices. Assuming repulsive interparticle interactions, equal mass, and unit total filling, we calculate the ground-state phase diagram by means of both Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory and time-evolving block decimation method. We demonstrate the existence of a counterflow superfluid (CFSF) phase of polaron pairs, which are composite particles consisting of two fermions and two bosonic holes, in a broad range of the parameter space. We find that this phase naturally emerges in $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb mixtures, realiz…
Under the assumption of two fluid kinematics of a nonrelativistic Bose liquid in the presence of a local velocity field $v(x)$, local Galilei transformations are used to derive formulas for the spatial distribution of superfluidity. The local formulation is shown to subsume several descriptions of superfluidity, from Landau's free quasiparticle picture of the normal fluid to the fully microscopic winding number formula for superfluid density. We derive the superfluid distribution of generic pure states of 1-d bosonic systems by using the continuum analog of matrix product states. With a view t…
We propose a new theoretical formalism which describes the Bose Einstein condensation of weakly interacting bosons with finite life time interacting with a thermal bath. We show that if a quasi-thermal distribution function of particles is achieved, the elementary excitations of the condensate show a linear spectrum characteristic of a superfluid, with a renormalized sound velocity with respect to the equilibrium case.
We probe the transition between superfluid and Bose glass phases using quantum quenches of disorder in an ultracold atomic lattice gas that realizes the disordered Bose-Hubbard model. Measurements of excitations generated by the quench exhibit threshold behavior in the disorder strength indicative of a phase transition. Ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations confirm that the appearance of excitations coincides with the equilibrium superfluid--Bose-glass phase boundary at different lattice potential depths. By varying the quench time, we demonstrate the disappearance of an adiabatic timescal…
The hallmark of superfluidity is the appearance of metastable flow-states that carry a persistent circulating current. Considering Bose-Hubbard superfluid rings, we clarify the role of "quantum chaos" in this context. We show that the standard Landau and Bogoliubov superfluidity criteria fail for such low-dimensional circuits. We also discuss the feasibility for a coherent operation of a SQUID-like setup. Finally, we address the manifestation of the strong many-body dynamical localization effect.
We clarify a relation between the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional for spin-2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and the Ginzburg-Landau theory for neutron $^3P_2$ superfluidis (spin-triplet $P$-wave pairing with total angular momentum two). We then classify all uniform states with nontrivial unbroken symmetries, with the help of geometric invariant theory.
Quantum spin ice in pyrochlore lattice exemplifies three dimensional frustrated spin systems. In existing studies, Bose-Einstein condensation of bosonic spinons gives rise to magnetically ordered ground state.A truly liquid quantum spin superfluid state that manifests a deconfined Higgs condensate of spinons is demonstrated. This state is shown to occur in the fully antiferromagnetic case of the non-Kramers quantum spin ice with a fluctuations-induced first-order quantum phase transition from the $U(1)$ spin liquid to the spin superfluid. The spin superfluid density jump is obtained analytically.
We theoretically study the superfluidity properties of a non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. The dynamics of the condensate is described at mean-field level in terms of a modified Complex Ginzburg Landau equation. A generalized Landau criterion is formulated which estimates the onset of the drag force on a small moving defect. Metastability of supercurrents in multiply connected geometries persists up to higher flow speeds.
We study the one-dimensional Bose gas in spatially correlated disorder at zero temperature, using an extended density-phase Bogoliubov method. We analyze in particular the decay of the one-body density matrix and the behaviour of the Bogoliubov excitations across the phase boundary. We observe that the transition to the Bose glass phase is marked by a power-law divergence of the density of states at low energy. A measure of the localization length displays a power-law energy dependence in both regions, with the exponent equal to -1 at the boundary. We draw the phase diagram of the superfluid-i…
We study superfluid to Anderson insulator transition of strongly repulsive Bose gas in a one dimensional incommensurate optical lattice. In the hard core limit, the Bose-Fermi mapping allows us to deal with the system exactly by using the exact numerical method. Based on the Aubry-André model, we exploit the phase transition of the hard core boson system from superfluid phase with all the single particle states being extended to the Bose glass phase with all the single particle states being Anderson localized as the strength of the incommensurate potential increasing relative to the amplitude …
