We exploited graphene nanoribbons based meta-surface to realize coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in the mid-infrared regime. It was shown that quasi-CPA frequencies, at which CPA can be demonstrated with proper phase modulations, exist for the graphene meta-surface with strong resonant behaviors. The CPA can be tuned substantially by merging the geometric design of the meta-surface and the electrical tunability of graphene. Furthermore, we found that the graphene nanoribbon meta-surface based CPA is realizable with experimental graphene data. The findings of CPA with graphene meta-surface can be generalized for potential applications in optical detections and signal processing with two-dimensional optoelectronic materials.
Dual-band infrared photodetectors (DBIPs) can discriminate desired signals from complex scenes and thus are highly expected for threat-warning, remote sensing, and astronomy applications. Conventional DBIPs with high-performances are, however, typically based on semiconductor thin films, but remain the challenges of complex spatial align, expensive growth and cooling requirement. Here, we report a tunable graphene plasmonic photodetector with dual-band infrared spectral selectivity driven by ferroelectric superdomain. The periodic ferroelectric polarization array with nanoscale ring shapes pro…
We demonstrate spectrally-tunable Fabry-Perot bandpass filters operating across the MWIR by utilizing the phase-change material GeSbTe (GST) as a tunable cavity medium between two (Ge:Si) distributed Bragg reflectors. The induced refractive index modulation of GST increases the cavity's optical path length, red-shifting the passband. Our filters have spectral-tunability of ~300 nm, transmission efficiencies of 60-75% and narrowband FWHMs of 50-65 nm (Q-factor ~70-90). We further show multispectral thermal imaging and gas sensing. By matching the filter's initial passband to a CO$_{2}$ vibratio…
We propose and design an ultra-compact and broadband tunable multimode interference (MMI) splitter in mid-infrared based on graphene plasmonic waveguides. The size of the device is only 0.56μm*1.2μm, which corresponds to device area of only about 0.014λ^2, where λ is the vacuum wavelength. And the center wavelength of the device can be tuned in a broad band from 7μm to 9μm with the Fermi level of graphene varied from 0.5eV to 1eV. Furthermore, the device is easy to be fabricated on chip.
We report on the generation of nanosecond mid-infrared pulses having frequency tunability, a narrow linewidth, and a high pulse energy. These pulses are obtained by frequency mixing between injection-seeded near-infrared pulses in potassium titanyl arsenate crystals. A continuous-wave external cavity laser diode or a Ti:sapphire ring laser is used as a tunable seeding source for the near-infrared pulses. The typical energy of the generated mid-infrared pulses is in the range of 0.4-1 mJ/pulse. The tuning wavelength ranges from 3142 to 4806 nm. A narrow linewidth of 1.4 GHz and good frequency r…
We report on a mid-infrared frequency comb source of unprecedented tunability covering the entire 3-10 μm molecular fingerprint region. The system is based on difference frequency generation in a GaSe crystal pumped by a 151 MHz Yb:fiber frequency comb. The process was seeded with Raman shifted solitons generated in a highly nonlinear suspended-core fiber with the same source. Average powers up to 1.5 mW were achieved at 4.7 μm wavelength.
Portable mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy and sensing applications require widely tunable, narrow linewidth, chip-scale, single-mode sources without sacrificing significant output power. However, no such lasers have been demonstrated beyond 3 $μ$m due to the challenge of building tunable, high quality-factor (Q) on-chip cavities. We demonstrate a tunable, single-mode mid-IR laser at 3.4 $μ$m using a high-Q silicon microring cavity with integrated heaters and a multi-mode Interband Cascade Laser (ICL). We show that the multiple longitudinal modes of an ICL collapse into a single frequency via…
We have studied the optical oscillation and tunneling of light waves in optical waveguide ladders formed by two coupled planar optical waveguide arrays. For the band structure, a mid-zone gap is formed due to band hybridization and its wavenumber position can be tuned throughout the whole Brillouin zone, which is different from the Bragg gap. By imposing a gradient in the propagation constant in each array, Bloch-Zener oscillation (BZO) is realized with Zener tunneling between the bands occurring at mid zone, which is contrary to the common BZO with tunneling at the center or edge of the Brill…
Negative refraction provides an attractive platform to manipulate mid-infrared and terahertz radiation for molecular sensing and thermal radiation applications. However, its implementation based on available metamaterials and plasmonic media presents challenges associated with optical losses, limited spatial confinement, and lack of active tunability in this spectral range. Here, we demonstrate gate-tunable negative refraction at mid-infrared frequencies using hybrid topological polaritons in van der Waals heterostructures with high spatial confinement. We experimentally visualize wide-angle n…
We demonstrate a two-crystal mid-infrared dual-wavelength optical parametric oscillator, synchronously pumped by a high power femtosecond Yb:fiber laser. The singly-resonant ring cavity, containing two periodically poled lithium niobate crystals, is capable of generating two synchronized idler wavelengths, independently tunable over 30 THz in the 2.9 - 4.2 μm wavelength region, due to the cascaded quadratic nonlinear effect. The independent tunability of the two idlers makes the optical parametric oscillator a promising source for ultrafast pulse generation towards the THz wavelength region, b…
We report on a long wavelength emitting rare earth doped fiber laser with emission centered at 3.5 μm and tunable across 450 nm. The longest wavelength emission was 3.78 μm, which is the longest emission from a fiber laser operating at room temperature. In a simple optical arrangement employing dielectric mirrors for feedback, the laser was capable of emitting 1.45 W of near diffraction limited output power at 3.47 μm. These emission characteristics compliment the emission from quantum cascade lasers and demonstrate how all infrared dual wavelength pumping can be used to access high lying rare…
We propose a scheme for the emission of few-cycle dispersive waves in the mid-infrared using hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with noble gas. The underlying mechanism is the formation of a plasma cloud by a self-compressed, sub-cycle pump pulse. The resulting free-electron population modifies the fiber dispersion, allowing phase-matched access to dispersive waves at otherwise inaccessible frequencies, well into the mid-IR. Remarkably, the pulses generated turn out to have durations of the order of two optical cycles. In addition, this ultrafast emission, which occurs even in the abse…
We report on a novel experimental scheme to generate continuous-wave (cw), high power, and higher-order optical vortices tunable across mid-IR wavelength range. Using cw, two-crystal, singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (T-SRO) and pumping one of the crystals with Gaussian beam and the other crystal with optical vortices of orders, lp = 1 to 6, we have directly transferred the vortices at near-IR to the mid-IR wavelength range. The idler vortices of orders, li = 1 to 6, are tunable across 2276-3576 nm with a maximum output power of 6.8 W at order of, li = 1, for the pump power of 25 …
Optical frequency comb is an enabling technology for a multitude of applications from metrology to ranging and communications. The tremendous progress in sources of optical frequency combs has mostly been centered around the near-infrared spectral region while many applications demand sources in the visible and mid-infrared, which have so far been challenging to achieve, especially in nanophotonics. Here, we report frequency combs tunable from visible to mid-infrared on a single chip based on ultra-widely tunable optical parametric oscillators in lithium niobate nanophotonics. Using picosecond…
We experimentally demonstrate wide-band (>100 THz) frequency down-conversion of near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser to the mid-infrared (MIR) using four-wave-mixing (FWM) in photonic-chip silicon-nitride waveguides. The engineered dispersion in the nanophotonic geometry, along with the wide transparency range of silicon nitride, enables large-detuning FWM phase-matching and results in tunable MIR from 2.6-3.6 um on a single chip with 100-pJ-scale pump-pulse energies. Additionally, we observe > 20 dB broadband parametric gain for the NIR pulses when the FWM proce…
We introduce the concept of nonlinear graphene metasurfaces employing the controllable interaction between a graphene layer and a planar metamaterial. Such hybrid metasurfaces support two types of subradiant resonant modes, asymmetric modes of structured metamaterial elements ("metamolecules") and graphene plasmons exhibiting strong mutual coupling and avoided dispersion crossing. High tunability of graphene plasmons facilitates strong interaction between the subradiant modes, modifying the spectral position and lifetime of the associated Fano resonances. We demonstrate that strong resonant in…
The development of nanomaterials with a large nonlinear susceptibility is essential for nonlinear nanophotonics. We show that transition-metal-dichalcogenide (TMD) nanotriangles have a large effective second-order susceptibility [$χ^{(2)}$] at mid-infrared to near-infrared frequencies owing to their broken centrosymmetry. $χ^{(2)}$ is calculated within the density-matrix formalism that accounts for dissipation and screening. $χ^{(2)}$ peaks in the vicinity of both two-photon resonances (specified by the geometry) and plasmon resonances (tunable via the carrier density). Aligning the resonances…
Optical parametric oscillation (OPO) with far-shifted frequency sidebands has attracted significant interests in precision spectroscopy and quantum information processing. Microresonator based OPO sources hold the advantages of miniaturized footprint and versatile dispersion engineering. Here we demonstrate large-frequency-shifted $χ^{(3)}$-based OPO from crystalline aluminum nitride microrings pumped at $\sim$2 $μ$m in the normal dispersion regime. OPO in the telecom and mid-infrared bands with a frequency separation of 65.5 THz is achieved. The OPO frequency can be agilely tuned in the range…
The recent discovery of natural biaxial hyperbolicity in van der Waals crystals, such as $α$-MoO$_3$, has opened up new avenues for mid-IR nanophotonics due to their deep subwavelength phonon-polaritons. However, a significant challenge is the lack of active tunability of these hyperbolic phonon polaritons. In this work, we investigate heterostructures of graphene and $α$-MoO$_3$ for actively tunable hybrid plasmon phonon polariton modes via electrostatic gating in the mid-infrared spectral region. We observe a unique propagation direction dependent hybridization of graphene plasmon polaritons…
Ultrafast optical excitation with intense mid-infrared and terahertz pulses has emerged as a new tool to control materials dynamically. As most experiments are performed with femtosecond pulse excitation, typical lifetimes of most light-induced phenomena in solids are of only few picoseconds. Yet, many scientific applications require longer drive pulses and lifetimes. Here, we describe a mid-infrared pump - terahertz-probe setup based on a CO$\mathrm{_2}$ laser seeded with 10.6 $\mathrmμ$m wavelength pulses from an optical parametric amplifier, itself pumped by a Ti:Al$\mathrm{_2}$O$\mathrm{_3…
Controlling the spectral and angular response of infrared (IR) radiation is a challenging task of paramount importance to various emerging photonic applications. Here, we overcome these problems by proposing and analyzing a new design of a tunable narrowband directional optical transmission filter. The presented thermally controlled multilayer filter leverages the temperature dependent phase change properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to enable efficient and reversible fast optical switching by using a pump-probe laser excitation setup. More specifically, transmission is blocked for high inten…

We report the coherent phase-locking of a quantum cascade laser (QCL) at 10-$μ$m to the secondary frequency standard of this spectral region, a CO2 laser stabilized on a saturated absorption line of OsO4. The stability and accuracy of the standard are transferred to the QCL resulting in a line width of the order of 10 Hz, and leading to our knowledge to the narrowest QCL to date. The locked QCL is then used to perform absorption spectroscopy spanning 6 GHz of NH3 and methyltrioxorhenium, two species of interest for applications in precision measurements.
Dual-frequency comb spectroscopy has emerged as a disruptive technique for measuring wide-spanning spectra with high resolution, yielding a particularly powerful technique for sensitive multi-component gas analysis. We present a spectrometer system based on dual electro-optical combs with subsequent conversion to the mid-infrared via tunable difference frequency generation, operating in the range from 3 to 4.7 $μ$m. The simultaneously recorded bandwidth is up to 454(1) GHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 7.3(2) x 10$^2$ Hz$^{-1/2}$ can be reached. The conversion preserves the coherence of the d…
Hyperbolic metasurfaces based on van der Waals (vdW) materials support propagation of extremely anisotropic polaritons towards nanoscale light compression and manipulation, and thus has great potential in the applications of planar hyperlens, nanolasing, quantum optics and ultrasensitive infrared spectroscopy. Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a vdW metasurface can manipulate the propagation of hyperbolic polaritons at the level of single atomic layers, possessing higher degree of field confinement and lower losses than the conventional media. However, active manipulation of hy…
A metamaterial composed of thin metallic strips as an efficient broadband absorber in the mid-infrared spectrum is investigated. Here the matching between dielectric and geometrical properties of the individual elements is critical to ensure high absorption. Detailed theoretical analysis based on the electric dipole approximation is performed to characterize the absorption and scattering properties of the individual elements of the unit cell and the results are used to design the metamaterial composed of such configurations. The absorption cross-section of a strip-shaped element can exceed its…
Design of Tunable Perfect Absorbers in the Mid-IR Spectrum Using Graphene-Based Multilayer Structures: Emerging Applications in Atmospheric Window Matching
Integrating an absorbing thin film into a resonant cavity is the most practical way to achieve perfect absorption of light at a selected wavelength in the mid-to-far infrared, as required to target blackbody radiation or molecular fingerprints. The cavity is designed to resonate and enable perfect absorption in the film at the chosen wavelength λ. However, in current state-of-the-art designs, a still large absorbing film thickness (λ/50) is needed and tuning the perfect absorption wavelength over a broad range requires changing the cavity materials. Here, we introduce a new resonant cavity con…
Tuning the macroscopic dielectric response on demand holds potential for actively tunable metaphotonics and optical devices. In recent years, graphene has been extensively investigated as a tunable element in nanophotonics. Significant theoretical work has been devoted on the tuning the hyperbolic properties of graphene/dielectric heterostructures, however, until now, such a motif has not been demonstrated experimentally. Here we focus on a graphene/polaritonic dielectric metamaterial, with strong optical resonances arising from the polar response of the dielectric, which are, in general, diff…
A novel mechanism to realize dynamically tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue in the terahertz (THz) regime is proposed. By putting the electrically controllable monolayer graphene under the dark resonator, the amplitude of the EIT resonance in the metal-based metamaterial can be modulated substantially via altering the Fermi level of graphene. The amplitude modulation can be attributed to the change in the damping rate of the dark mode caused by the recombination effect of the conductive graphene. This work provides an alternative way to achieve tunable slow light e…
We theoretically and numerically demonstrate an actively tunable slow light in a hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial in the terahertz (THz) regime. In the unit cell, the near field coupling between the metallic elements including the bright cut wire resonator and the dark double split-ring resonator gives rises to a pronounced transmission peak. By positioning a monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonator, an active modulation of the near field coupling is achieved via shifting the Fermi level of graphene. The physical origin can be attributed to the variation in the damping rate of the da…

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been widely utilized to improve the absorption performance in the photosensors. Graphene has emerged as a promising plasmonic material, which supports tunable SPR and shows significant flexibility over metals. In this letter, a hybrid photosensor based on the integration of periodic cross-shaped graphene arrays with an ultrathin light-absorbing semiconductor is proposed. A tenfold absorption enhancement over a large range of the incidence angle for both light polarizations as well as a considerably high photogeneration rate ($\sim10^{37}$) is demonstrated at…
We investigate the absorption properties of graphene-based anisotropic metamaterial structures where the metamaterial layer possesses an electromagnetic response corresponding to a near-zero permittivity. We find that through analytical and numerical studies, near perfect absorption arises over an unusually broad range of beam incidence angles. Due to the presence of graphene, the absorption is tunable via a gate voltage, providing dynamic control of the energy transmission. We show that this strongly enhanced absorption arises due to a coupling between light and a fast wave-mode propagating a…
We theoretically consider infrared-driven hyperbolic metamaterials able to spatially filtering terahertz radiation. The metamaterial is a slab made of alternating semiconductor and dielectric layers whose homogenized uniaxial response, at terahertz frequencies, shows principal permittivities of different signs. The gap provided by metamaterial hyperbolic dispersion allows the slab to stop spatial frequencies within a bandwidth tunable by changing the infrared radiation intensity. We numerically prove the device functionality by resorting to full wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charg…
We demonstrate a broadband mid-infrared (MIR) frequency comb source based on difference frequency generation (DFG) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. Mid-infrared radiation is obtained via mixing of the output of a 125 MHz repetition rate Yb-doped fiber laser with Raman-shifted solitons generated from the same source in a highly nonlinear fiber. The resulting idler is tunable in the range of 2.7 - 4.2 μm with average output power reaching 237 mW, and pulses as short as 115 fs. The coherence of the MIR comb is confirmed by spectral interferometry and heterodyne beat measureme…
Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been intensively investigated and widely exploited to trap the incident light and enhance absorption in the optoelectronic devices. The availability of graphene as a plasmonic material with strong half-metallicity and continuously tunable surface conductivity makes it promising to dynamically modulate the absorption enhancement with graphene-based metamaterials. Here we numerically demonstrate tunable light trapping and absorption enhancement can be realized with graphene-based complementary metamaterials. Furthermore, we also explore the polarization sensit…
Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) is an emerging platform for compact, low-power nonlinear-optical devices, and has been used extensively for near-infrared frequency conversion. Recent work has extended these devices to mid-infrared wavelengths, where broadly tunable sources may be used for chemical sensing. To this end, we demonstrate efficient and broadband difference frequency generation between a fixed 1-micron pump and a tunable telecom source in uniformly-poled TFLN-on-sapphire by harnessing the dispersion-engineering available in tightly-confining waveguides. We show a simultaneous 1-2 o…
We present a theoretical analysis of surface-plasmon-mediated mode-coupling in a planar thin film metal/insulator stack. Solving for the modes of this structure, we obtain an avoided crossing in the angular domain that is tunable using the system's materials and geometrical parameters. The computed reflectance of the metal/insulator stack exhibits a lineshape that is modeled as a geometric Fano resonance, accompanied by a response function characteristic of an induced coherence, albeit in the angular domain. We also observe a reversal of the Fano lineshape asymmetry as the system's parameters …
We describe a tunable broadband mid-infrared laser source based on difference-frequency mixing of a 100 MHz femtosecond Yb:fiber laser oscillator and a Raman-shifted soliton generated with the same laser. The resulting light is tunable over 3.0 um to 4.4 um, with a FWHM bandwidth of 170 nm and maximum average output power up to 125 mW. The noise and coherence properties of this source are also investigated and described.
In this work, we report the design of a wavelength-tunable infrared metamaterial by exciting magnetic resonance with phase transition of vanadium dioxide (VO2). Numerical simulation shows a broad absorption peak at the wavelength of 10.9 um when VO2 is a metal, but it shifts to 15.1 um when VO2 changes to dielectric phase below its phase transition temperature of 68degC. The large tunability of 38.5% in the resonance wavelength stems from the different excitation conditions of magnetic resonance assisted by plasmon in metallic VO2 but optical phonons in dielectric VO2. The physical mechanism i…
Black phosphorus (BP) as a promising two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical properties constitutes an excellent building block in multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials. In this work, we design a multilayer structure composed of BP/dielectric layer stacking unit cells patterned on a gold mirror and theoretically demonstrate the tunable anisotropic absorption in the infrared regime. The electric dipole resonance between the adjacent unit cells drives the structure in the critical coupling state, and impedance of the structure matches to that of free space, showing the perfect absorpti…
We theoretically investigate the electromagnetic response of a novel class of multi-layered metamaterials obtained by alternating graphene sheets and dielectric layers, the whole structure not exhibiting a plane of reflection symmetry along the stacking direction. We show that the electromagnetic response of the structure is characterized by a magneto-electric coupling described by an effective chiral parameter. Exploiting the intrinsic tunability of the graphene-light coupling, we prove that one can tune both the dielectric and the chiral electromagnetic response by varying the graphene chemi…
We present experimental demonstration of electronically tunable metamaterial perfect absorbers in the terahertz regime. By incorporation of active liquid crystal into strategic locations within the metamaterial unit cell we are able to modify the absorption by 30 percent at 2.62 THz, as well as tune the resonant absorption over 4 percent in bandwidth. Numerical full-wave simulations match well to experiments and clarify the underlying mechanism, i.e. a simultaneous tuning of both the electric and magnetic response that allows for the preservation of the resonant absorption. These results show …
The active and nonlinear graphene properties are limited due to weak light matter interaction between the ultrathin graphene and the incident light. In this work, we present enhanced nonlinear effects at the low terahertz (THz) range by designing a new patterned graphene hyperbolic metamaterial (GHMM). More specifically, it is demonstrated that the third harmonic generation (THG) can be significantly enhanced by the proposed GHMM due to the field enhancement at the resonance as well as the supported slow light response that fosters strong light matter interaction.
Infrared spectroscopy is the technique of choice for chemical identification of biomolecules through their vibrational fingerprints. However, infrared light interacts poorly with nanometric size molecules. Here, we exploit the unique electro-optical properties of graphene to demonstrate a high-sensitivity tunable plasmonic biosensor for chemically-specific label-free detection of protein monolayers. The plasmon resonance of nanostructured graphene is dynamically tuned to selectively probe the protein at different frequencies and extract its complex refractive index. Additionally, the extreme s…
