We study Weitzenböck's torsion and discuss its properties. Specifically, we calculate the measured components of Weitzenböck's torsion tensor for a frame field adapted to static observers in a Fermi normal coordinate system that we establish along the world line of an arbitrary accelerated observer in general relativity. A similar calculation is carried out in the standard Schwarzschild-like coordinates for static observers in the exterior Kerr spacetime; we then compare our results with the corresponding curvature components. Our work supports the contention that in the extended general relativistic framework involving both the Levi-Civita and Weitzenböck connections, curvature and torsion provide complementary representations of the gravitational field.
We offer a mathematical toolkit for the study of waves propagating on a background manifold with nonvanishing torsion. Examples include electromagnetic and gravitational waves on a spacetime with torsion. The toolkit comprises generalized versions of the Lichnerowicz-de Rham and the Beltrami wave operators, and the Weitzenböck identity relating them on Riemann-Cartan geometries. The construction applies to any field belonging to a matrix representation of a Lie (super) algebra containing an $\mathfrak{so}$ subalgebra. Using these tools, we analyze the propagation of different massless waves in…
We review the application of torsion in field theory. First we show how the notion of torsion emerges in differential geometry. In the context of a Cartan circuit, torsion is related to translations similar as curvature to rotations. Cartan's investigations started by analyzing Einsteins general relativity theory and by taking recourse to the theory of Cosserat continua. In these continua, the points of which carry independent translational and rotational degrees of freedom, there occur, besides ordinary (force) stresses, additionally spin moment stresses. In a 3-dimensional continuized crysta…
We investigate the cosmological applications of Myrzakulov $F(R,T)$ gravity. In this theory ones uses a specific but non-special connection, and thus both curvature and torsion are dynamical fields related to gravity. We introduce a parametrization that quantifies the deviation of curvature and torsion scalars form their corresponding values obtained using the special Levi-Civita and Weitzenb{ö}ck connections, and we extract the cosmological field equations following the mini-super-space procedure. Even for the simple case where the action of the theory is linear in $R$ and $T$, we find that t…
