In the hole-doped cuprates, a small amount of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow range of high electron concentration ($\sim$ doped Ce content) after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) bulk single crystals annealed by a "protect annealing" method showed a high $T_c$ of $\sim$ 27 K for small Ce content down to $x \sim 0.05$. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of PLCCO crystals, we observed a sharp quasi-particle peak on the entire Fermi surface without signature of an AFM pseudogap unlike all the previous work, indicating a dramatic reduction of AFM correlation length and/or of magnetic moments. The superconducting state was found to extend over a wide electron concentration range. The present ARPES results fundamentally change the long-standing picture on the electronic structure in the electron-doped regime.
Evidence is presented from NMR 1/T1T and ARPES data for the sudden disappearance of 2D antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in the lightly overdoped region (p=0.19) at the T=0 metal-insulator transition where the pseudogap energy falls to zero. AF fluctuations thus appear to be intimately associated with the pseudogap and serve primarily to weaken superconductivity, strongly reducing the condensation energy and superfluid density.
A reduction of the density of states near the Fermi energy in the normal state (pseudogap) of high-temperature oxide superconductors is examined on the basis of the two-dimensional tight-binding model with effective interactions due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations. By using antiferromagnetic correlation lengths which are phenomenologically assumed, the doping dependence of the pseudogap is obtained. The superconducting transition temperature decreases and eventually vanishes due to the pseudogap as the hole concentration is reduced.
Based on recent experimental results for electron-doped cuprate oxides and ferromagnetic superconductors, it is shown that antiferromagnetic fluctuations always develop in the superconducting phase of both low- and high-temperature superconductors. The relation between the magnitude of the antiferromagnetic pseudogap and the characteristic temperature of the antiferromagnetic pseudogap opening is obtained. The characteristic temperature of the antiferromagnetic pseudogap opening for metal superconductors is estimated.
The effect of annealing at room temperature on the fluctuation conductivity (FLC) $σ^\prime(T)$ and pseudogap (PG) $Δ^*(T)$ in the basal ab plane of $ReBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ (Re = Ho) single crystals with a lack of oxygen has been studied. It is shown that at all stages of annealing, the FLC near $T_c$ can be described by the Aslamazov$-$Larkin and Maki$-$Thompson fluctuation theories, demonstrating a 3D$-$2D crossover with increasing temperature. The crossover temperature $T_0$ was used to determine the coherence length along the $c$-axis, $ξ_c(0)$=2.82 A. At the inter-mediate stage of annealing, …
We performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Nd1.87Ce0.13CuO4, which is located at the boundary of the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the superconducting phase. We observed that the quasiparticle (QP) effective mass around (pi, 0) is strongly enhanced due to the opening of the AF gap. The QP mass and the AF gap are found to be anisotropic, with the largest value near the intersecting point of the Fermi surface and the AF zone boundary. In addition, we observed that the QP peak disappears around the Neel temperature (TN) while the AF pseudogap is gradually filled up at …
Antiferromagnetic correlations have been argued to be the cause of the d-wave superconductivity and the pseudogap phenomena exhibited by the cuprates. Although the antiferromagnetic response in the pseudogap state has been reported for a number of compounds, there exists no information for structurally simple HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Here we report neutron scattering results for HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ $\sim$ 71 K, pseudogap temperature T* $\sim$ 305 K) that demonstrate the absence of the two most prominent features of the magnetic excitation spectrum of t…
The pseudogap phenomena observed on cuprate high temperature superconductors are investigated based on the exact diagonalization method on the finite cluster t-J model. The results show the presence of the gap-like behavior in the temperature dependence of various magnetic properties; the NMR relaxation rate, the neutron scattering intensity and the static susceptibility. The calculated spin correlation function indicates that the pseudogap behavior arises associated with the development of the antiferromagnetic spin correlation with decreasing the temperature. The numerical results are presen…
Spatially-resolved NMR is used to probe the magnetism in and around the vortex core of nearly optimally-doped Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+δ} (T_c=85K). The NMR relaxation rate T_1^{-1} at ^{205}Tl site, at which antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuation can be monitored sensitively, provides a direct evidence that the AF spin correlation is significantly enhanced in the vortex core region. In the core region Cu spins show a local AF ordering with moment ~ 0.1μ_B parallel to the layers at T_N=20K. Above T_N the core region is in the paramagnetic state which is a reminiscence of the state above the pseudogap temper…
High-temperature superconductivity in iron-arsenic materials (pnictides) near an antiferromagnetic phase raises the possibility of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing. However, the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity remains unclear in the underdoped regime, which is closer to the antiferromagnetic phase. Here we report that the superconducting gap of the underdoped pnictides scales linearly with the transition temperature, and that a distinct pseudogap coexisting with the SC gap develops on underdoping. This pseudogap occurs on Fermi surface sheets connected b…
The phase of the rotating order parameter in rotating antiferromagnetism is calculated using a combination of mean-field theory and Heisenberg equation. This phase shows a linear time dependence, which allows us to interpret rotating antiferromagnetism as a synchronized Larmor-like precession of all the spins in the system or as an unusual ${\bf q}=(π,π)$ spin-wave around a zero local magnetization. We discuss implications for the pseudogap state of high-$T_C$ superconducting materials. Rotating antiferromagnetism has been proposed to model the pseudogap state in these materials.
We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of single-crystalline Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.023, 0.028, 0.033, and 0.059) annealed at 350~$^{\circ}$C for 7 days. From the observation of a characteristic shape of $^{75}$As NMR spectra in the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, as in the case of $x$ = 0 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 170 K), clear evidence for the commensurate AFM phase transition with the concomitant structural phase transition is observed in $x$ = 0.023 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 106 K) and $x$ = 0.028 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 53 K). Through the temperature dependence of …
We report on an exact solution of the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid spin fermion model in the limit πT << ω_{sf}, which demonstrates that the broad high energy features found in ARPES measurements of the spectral density of the underdoped cuprate superconductors are determined by strong antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations and precursor effects of an SDW state. We show that the onset temperature, T^{cr}, of weak pseudo-gap (pseudoscaling) behavior is determined by the strength, ξ, of the AF correlations, and obtain the generic changes in low frequency magnetic behavior seen in NMR exper…
It is argued that the dominant feature of the phase diagram of the high $T_c$ cuprates is the crossover to the pseudogap phase in the energy (temperature) region $E (T^*)$. We argue that this scale is determined by the effective antiferromagnetic interaction which we calculate to be $J_{eff} = J_{\rm superexchange} - xt$ where $x$ is the hole percentage and $t$ the hopping integral.
Inhomogeneous reduction-annealing effects on the electron-doped cuprate superconductor revealed by micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy
Unveiling the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to both superconductivity and antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the pairing mechanism, and a non-Fermi liquid phase is a key issue for understanding high temperature superconductivity in cuprates. We here show that antiparallel magnetic order can be reasonably and naturally predicted in hole-doped CuO2 planes by starting from the ground state of a weakly doped antiferromagnetic insulator, where a Skyrmion-type three-dimensional spin texture is created around the doped hole. The superconducting transition temperature Tc can be understood in…
This review describes the main experimental facts and a number of theoretical models concerning the pseudogap state in high - temperature superconductors. On the phase diagram of HTSC - cuprates the pseudogap state is observed in the region of current carrier concentrations less than optimal and leads to a number of anomalies of electronic properties. These pseudogap anomalies apparently are due to fluctuations of antiferromagnetic short - range order developing as system moves towards antiferromagnetic region on the phase diagram. Electron interaction with these fluctuations leads to anisotro…
Spin fluctuations (SF) and SF-mediated superconductivity (SC) in quasi-two-dimensional metals around the antiferrromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) are investigated by using the self-consistent renormalization theory for SF and the strong coupling theory for SC. We introduce a parameter y0 as a measure for the distance from the AFQCP which is approximately proportional to (x-xc), x being the electron (e) or hole (h) doping concentration to the half-filled band and xc being the value at the AFQCP. We present phase diagrams in the T-y0 plane including contour maps of the AF correlation…
We utilize ultrafast optical measurement to study the quasiparticle relaxation in stoichiometric LiFeAs and nearly optimally doped (BaK)Fe2As2 crystals. According to our temperature-dependent studies of LiFeAs, we have observed pseudogap-like feature at onset temperature of ~ 55 K, which is above Tc = 15 K. In addition, the onset temperature of pseudogap ~90K was also observed in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc = 36 K). Our findings seem implying that the pseudogap feature, which is due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations, is universal for the largely studied 11, 111, 122, and 1111 iron-based superconductor…
We give a quantitative analysis of the published results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments for k-(ET)2X family of organic charge transfer salts by using the phenomenological spin fluctuation model of Moriya, and Millis, Monien and Pines (M-MMP). For temperatures above T_NMR ~ 50 K, the model gives a good quantitative description of the data for the paramagnetic metallic phase of several k-(ET)2X materials, with an antiferromagnetic correlation length which increases with decreasing temperature; growing to several lattice constants by T_NMR. It is shown that the fact that the dime…
We analyze pseudogap phenomena widely observed in the underdoped cuprates. We assume the existence of a strong d-wave pairing force competing with antiferromagnetic(AFM) fluctuations and the formation of flat and damped dispersion around the $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ region as two important elements caused by the proximity from the Mott insulator. Using the mode-mode coupling theory for the d-wave superconducting(dSC) and AFM fluctuations, we reproduce basic properties of the pseudogap seen in the magnetic resonance, neutron scattering, angle resolved photoemission and tunneling measurements in the …
We report $^{17}$O(2,3) and $^{63}$Cu(2) spin-lattice relaxation rates and the $^{17}$O(2,3) spin-spin relaxation rate in different magnetic fields in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ near $T_c$. Together these measurements enable us to test the magnetic field dependence of the pseudogap effect on the spin susceptibility in different regions of the Brillouin zone using the known form factors for different nuclei as filters. Thus, we study the momentum dispersion of the pseudogap behavior. We find that near the antiferromagnetic wave vector the pseudogap is insensitive to magnetic fields up to 15 T. In the r…
The conductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is particularly relevant for high-temperature superconductors. Vertex corrections are expected to be important because of strongly momentum dependent self-energies. We use the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach that satisfies crucial constraints such as the Mermin-Wagner theorem, the Pauli principle and sum rules in order to reach non-perturbative regimes. This approach is reliable from weak to intermediate coupling. A functional derivative approach ensures that vertex corrections are included in a way that satisfies the f sum-rule. The …
The evolution of the electronic state through the reduction annealing has been investigated in electron-doped Pr_1.3-x_La_0.7_Ce_x_CuO_4+delta_ (x=0.10) single crystals with the so-called T' structure. From the ab plane and c axis electrical resistivity measurements in magnetic fields, it has been found that, through the reduction annealing, the strongly localized state of carriers accompanied by the antiferromagnetic (AF) pseudogap in the as-grown crystal changes to a metallic state bringing about the Kondo effect without AF pseudogap and to a superconducting state. These results are able to …
To understand the interplay of d-wave superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the cuprates, we consider a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with nearest neighbor attractive interaction. Free energy of the homogeneous (coexisting superconducting and antiferromagnetic) state calculated a s a function of the band filling shows a region of of phase separation. The phase separation caused by the intersite attractive force leads to novel insights into salient features of the pseudogap phase diagram. In particular, the upper crossover curve can be identified with the phase separation boundar…
Superconductivity in cuprates is achieved by doping holes into a correlated charge-transfer insulator. While the correlated character of the parent insulator is now understood, there is no accepted theory for the "normal" state of the doped insulator. I present a mostly empirical analysis of a large range of experimental characterizations, making the case for two pseudogaps: (1) a large pseudogap resulting from the competition between the energy of superexchange-coupled local Cu moments and the kinetic energy of doped holes; (2) a small pseudogap that results from dopant disorder and consequen…
We report the analysis of pseudogap Delta* derived from resistivity experiments in FeAs-based superconductor SmFeAsO(0.85), having a critical temperature T_c = 55 K. Rather specific dependence Delta*(T) with two representative temperatures followed by a minimum at about 120 K was observed. Below T_s = 147 K, corresponding to the structural transition in SmFeAsO, Delta*(T) decreases linearly down to the temperature T_AFM = 133 K. This last peculiarity can likely be attributed to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Fe spins. It is believed that the found behavior can be explained in terms of…
Employing {\it state of the art} high resolution photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, an unique pnictide, where antiferromagnetism of Eu layer survives within the superconducting phase due to `FeAs' layers achieved via substitution and/or pressure. High energy and angle resolution helped to reveal pseudogap-quasiparticle features having primarily As 4$p$ character and spin density wave transition induced band folding in the electronic structure. A weakly dispersing feature of dominant As 4$p$ character is discovered aro…
For underdoped cuprate HTSC within the framework of the two component model of charge carries (holes and Zhang-Rice polarons) it is considered two near degenerate states of hole molecular orbitals in copper-oxygen plane. These are the state of hole molecular orbitals around one-site Zhang-Rice polarons, and another state is two-site hole molecular orbitals around the two-site oxygen cluster of two nearest Jahn-Teller copper ions with antiferromagnetic ordering spins and with common oxygen ion. Taking into account that the vibronic mixing of these near-degenerate electronic states leads to the …
High-temperature superconducting cuprates are distinguished by an enigmatic pseudogap which opens near optimal doping where the superconducting transition temperature is highest. Key questions concern its origin and whether it is essential in any way to superconductivity. Recent field-induced normal-state transport experiments on hole-doped cuprates have measured abrupt changes in the doping dependent Hall number and resistivity, consistent with a drop in carrier density from $1+p$ to $p$ holes per copper atom, on entering the pseudogap phase. In this work the change in resistivity is analyzed…
We report the out-of-plane resistivity in the systematically oxygen-controlled single crystals Bi$_{1.74}$Pb$_{0.38}$Sr$_{1.88}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis. Two characteristic temperatures $T^*$ and $T^{**}$ are found at which a semiconductor-like upturn starts to develop and the magnetoresistance changes its sign from positive to negative at lower temperature, respectively. The obtained phase diagram strongly suggests that the pseudogap temperature correlating to the superconducting gap is not $T^{*}$ but $T^{**}$. The gap opened at $T^*$ may relate to another phenom…
We investigate the microscopic origin of the pseudogap in the weakly doped 2D Hubbard model using Quantum Monte Carlo within the dynamical cluster approximation. We compare our results with proposed scenarios for the pseudogap. All our numerical evidence is in favor of spin-charge separation as described in the resonating valence bond picture as the cause of the pseudogap behavior. Scenarios of "preformed pairs", the coupling of quasiparticles to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and stripes are inconsistent with our results.
Pseudogap regime for the prototype high-Tc compounds hole doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x (Bi2212) and electron doped Nd2-xCexCuO4 (NCCO) is described by means of novel generalized LDA+DMFT+Sk approach. Here conventional dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) equations are supplied with additional (momentum dependent) self-energy Sk. In the present case Sk describes non-local dynamical correlations induced by short-ranged collective Heisenberg-like antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. Material specific model parameters of two neighboring CuO2 layers of Bi2212 and single CuO2 layer of NCCO were obtained with…
The pseudogap (PG) excitations in the framework of multiband superconductivity are analysed. Calculations for the doping phase diagram of electron-doped cuprate superconductors have been made. A nonrigid multiband model has been used. The interband pairing acts between the upper Hubbard band (UHB) and midgap states created (and shifted upwards) by doping. The appearance of two PG and two phase diagram critical points (CP) is suggested. The larger antinodal PG reflects the destruction of the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The second, smaller PG is a near-nodal event with exposed dopin…
Aspects of electron critical differentiation are clarified in the proximity of the Mott insulator. The flattening of the quasiparticle dispersion appears around momenta $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ on square lattices and determines the criticality of the metal-insulator transition with the suppressed coherence in that momentum region of quasiparticles. Such coherence suppression at the same time causes an instability to the superconducting state if a proper incoherent process is retained. The d-wave pairing interaction is generated from such retained processes without disturbance from the coherent sing…
We have grown single crystal samples of Co substituted CaFe2As2 using an FeAs flux and systematically studied the effects of annealing/quenching temperature on the physical properties of these samples. Whereas the as-grown samples (quenched from 960C) all enter the collapsed tetragonal phase upon cooling, annealing/quenching temperatures between 350C and 800C can be used to tune the system to low temperature antiferromagnetic/orthorhomic or superconducting states as well. The progression of the transition temperature versus annealing/quenching temperature (T-T$_{anneal}$) phase diagrams with i…
The characteristic pseudogap temperature T* in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 system has been systematically evaluated as a function of doping, especially focusing on its overdoped region, by measuring the out-of-plane resistivity under the magnetic fields. Overdoped samples have been prepared by annealing TSFZ-grown Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystals under the high oxygen pressures (990 kgf/cm2). At a zero field, the out-of-plane resistivity showed a metallic behavior down to Tc (= 62 K), while under the magnetic fields of over 3 T,it showed typical upturn behavior from around 65 K upon decreasing temperature. Thi…
Spatially-resolved NMR is used to probe the magnetism in and around vortex cores of nearly optimally-doped Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+x} (Tc=85 K). The NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 at Tl site provides a direct evidence that the AF spin correlation is significantly enhanced in the vortex core region. In the core region Cu spins show a local AF ordering with moments parallel to the layers at T_N=20K. Above T_N the core region is in the paramagnetic state which is a reminiscence of the state above the pseudogap temperature (T*~120 K), indicating that the pseudogap disappears within cores.
We present reliable many-body calculations for the t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model that explain in detail the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments on electron-doped high-temperature superconductors. The origin of the pseudogap is traced to two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations whose calculated temperature dependent correlation length also agrees with recent neutron scattering measurements. We make specific predictions for photoemission, for neutron scattering and for the phase diagram.

Electron interactions are pivotal for defining the electronic structure of quantum materials. In particular, the strong electron Coulomb repulsion is considered the keystone for describing the emergence of exotic and/or ordered phases of quantum matter as disparate as high-temperature superconductivity and charge- or magnetic-order. However, a comprehensive understanding of fundamental electronic properties of quantum materials is often complicated by the appearance of an enigmatic partial suppression of low-energy electronic states, known as the pseudogap. Here we take advantage of ultrafast …
Unveiling the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to both superconductivity and antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, the pairing mechanism, and a non-Fermi liquid phase is a key issue for understanding high temperature superconductivity in cuprates. A number of experimental results gathered especially in recently years have revealed an unexpected inhomogeneous nature of cuprates at the nanoscale, indicating the fundamental inapplicability of the conventional theories based on homogeneous systems. Here we show a microscopic model of pseudogap and pairing mechanisms on the basis of the consid…
Evidence that the pseudogap (PG) in a near-optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ sample destroys the BCS logarithmic pairing instability [1] raises again the question of the role of the PG in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates [2]. The elimination of the BCS instability is consistent with the view that the PG competes with superconductivity. However, as noted in [1], the onset of superconductivity with a $T_c \sim 90$ K suggests an alternative scenario in which the PG reflects the formation of short range pairing correlations. Here, we report results obtained from a dynamic …
We study the effect of finite chemical potential on the d-density wave state that has been proposed to explain the pseudogap phenomena in underdoped cuprates. We find that the specific heat anomaly at the transition temperature, below which the d-density wave state forms, gets weaker when finite chemical potential is introduced. This provides a useful ground for the proper interpretation of the specific heat measurement in regard to the existence of the d-density wave state below the pseudogap temperature. Further increase of the chemical potential leads to an incommensurate orbital antiferrom…
We present electron-tunneling spectroscopy of oxygen over- and under-doped Bi-2212 single crystals in a temperature range between 14 K and 290 K using a break-junction technique. In over- and under-doped samples we observe a pseudogap with T* = 280 - 290 K and T* > 290 K, respectively. In order to explain the data we consider possible models for the pseudogap, namely, (i) a precursor pairing; (ii) a charge-density-wave gap; (iii) a spin-gap due to antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations. Analyzing all data we show unambiguously that the only model which fits the data is a gap due to AF correlation…
We investigate pseudogap phenomena in the 2D electron system. Based on the mode-mode coupling theory of antiferromagnetic (AFM) and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting ($d$SC) fluctuations, single-particle dynamics is analyzed. For the parameter values of underdoped cuprates, pseudogap structure grows in the single-particle spectral weight $A(k,ω)$ around the wave vector $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ below the pseudo-spin-gap temperature $\TPG$ signaled by the reduction of dynamical spin correlations in qualitative agreement with the experimental data. The calculated results for the overdoped cuprates al…
Recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of the proximity effect in Au/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ bilayers showed a proximity-induced pseudogap [Yuli et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 197003 (2009)]. We describe the proximity effect in mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal bilayers by using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconductivity orders . The temperature dependent local density of states is calculated as a function of the distance…
Considering a possibility that the pseudogap state in the underdoped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is not due to a superconducting correlation, we study the tunneling spectroscopy below $T_{c}$ based on the phenomenological models of the pseudogap state. Specifically we consider two cases: (1) the pseudogap is a simple suppression of the density of states with an unknown origin; (2) the pseudogap state is due to an antiferromagnetic correlation. For both cases we calculate $dI/dV$ using the BTK theory. The results are discussed in comparison with experiments.
A d-wave superconductor, its phase coherence progressively destroyed by unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs, suffers an instability related to chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavor QED$_3$. The chiral manifold exhibits large degeneracy spanned by physical states acting as inherent ``competitors'' of d-wave superconductivity. Two of these states are associated with antiferromagnetic insulator and ``stripe'' phases, known to be stable in the pseudogap regime of cuprates near half-filling. The theory also predicts additional, yet unobserved state: a d+ip phase-incoherent superconductor.
Using the two-particle self-consistent approach and cluster perturbation theory for the two-dimensional t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model, we discuss weak- and strong-coupling mechanisms for the pseudogap observed in recent angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy on electron-doped cuprates. In the case of the strong-coupling mechanism, which is more relevant near half-filling, the pseudogap can be mainly driven by short range correlations near the Mott insulator. In the vicinity of optimal doping, where weak-coupling physics is more relevant, large antiferromagnetic correlation lengths, seen in neutr…
We study the quantum transition from an antiferromagnet to a superconductor in a model for electron- and hole-doped cuprates by means of a variational cluster perturbation theory approach. In both cases, our results suggest a tendency towards phase separation between a mixed antiferromagnetic-superconducting phase at low doping and a pure superconducting phase at larger doping. However, in the electron-doped case the energy scale for phase separation is an order of magnitude smaller than for hole doping. We argue that this can explain the different pseudogap and superconducting transition scal…
An unidentified quantum fluid designated as the pseudogap (PG) phase is produced by electron-density depletion in the CuO$_2$ antiferromagnetic insulator. Current theories suggest that the PG phase may be a pair density wave (PDW) state characterized by a spatially modulating density of electron pairs. Such a state should exhibit a periodically modulating energy gap $Δ_P(\pmb r)$ in real-space, and a characteristic quasiparticle scattering interference (QPI) signature $Λ_P(\pmb q)$ in wavevector space. By studying strongly underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaDyCu$_2$O$_8$ at hole-density ~0.08 in the sup…
We report on infrared studies of charge dynamics in a prototypical pnictide system: the BaFe2As2 family. Our experiments have identified hallmarks of the pseudogap state in the BaFe2As2 system that mirror the spectroscopic manifestations of the pseudogap in the cuprates. The magnitude of the infrared pseudogap is in accord with that of the spin-density-wave gap of the parent compound. By monitoring the superconducting gap of both P- and Co-doped compounds, we find that the infrared pseudogap is unrelated to superconductivity. The appearance of the pseudogap is found to correlate with the evolu…
Recent ARPES measurement on electron-doped cuprate $\mathrm{Pr}_{1.3-x}\mathrm{La}_{0.7}\mathrm{Ce}_{x}\mathrm{CuO}_{4}$ finds that the pseudogap along the boundary of the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone(AFBZ) exhibits dramatic momentum dependence. In particular, the pseudogap vanishes in a finite region around the anti-nodal point, in which a single broadened peak emerges at the un-renormalized quasiparticle energy. Such an observation is argued to be inconsistent with the antiferromagnetic(AFM) band-folding picture, which predicts a constant pseudogap along the AFBZ boundary. On the other h…

The pseudogap state is widely regarded as a precursor to high-temperature superconductivity yet remains poorly understood. Using high field (30 T) NMR, we report two electronically distinct oxygen sites within the copper-oxygen (Cu-O) planes of an underdoped cuprate in the pseudogap state. At temperatures well above the bulk superconducting transition, roughly 25% of the oxygen sites evidence superconducting pair formation, the remaining evidence antiferromagnetic ordering on the nearest neighbor Cu sites. Any superconducting fluctuations are slower than the microsecond timescales of the NMR p…
Assuming antiferromagnetic orbital correlations to model the pseudogap state in the underdoped high-temperature superconductors, we study how this correlation is distinguished from the d-wave superconductivity correlation with including the finite-range antiferromagnetic correlation effect. In spite of the fact that both correlations have the same d-wave symmetry, the contributions from each correlation is clearly distinguished in the spectral weight and the density of states.
Since its experimental discovery, many phenomenological theories successfully reproduced the rapid rise from $p$ to $1+p$ found in the Hall number $n_H$ at the critical doping $p^*$ of the pseudogap in superconducting cuprates. Further comparison with experiments is now needed in order to narrow down candidates. In this paper, we consider three previously successful phenomenological theories in a unified formalism---an antiferromagnetic mean field (AF), a spiral incommensurate antiferromagnetic mean field (sAF), and the Yang-Rice-Zhang (YRZ) theory. We find a rapid rise in the specific heat an…
Recently, an analysis of all available planar oxygen shift and relaxation data for the cuprate high-temperature superconductors showed that the data can be understood with a simple spin susceptibility from a metallic density of states common to all cuprates. It carries a doping dependent but temperature independent pseudogap at the Fermi surface, which causes the deviations from normal metallic behavior, also in the specific heat. Here, a more coherent, unbiased assessment of all data, including planar Cu, is presented and consequences are discussed, since the planar Cu data were collected and…
We report the results of Raman scattering experiments on single crystals of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) [La214] as a function of temperature and doping. In underdoped compounds low-energy B1g spectral weight is depleted in association with the opening of a pseudogap on regions of the Fermi surface located near (pi, 0) and (0, pi). The magnitude of the depletion increases with decreasing doping, and in the most underdoped samples, with decreasing temperature. The spectral weight that is lost at low-energies (omega < 800 cm-1) is transferred to the higher energy region normally occupied by multi-magnon s…
