Recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of the proximity effect in Au/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ bilayers showed a proximity-induced pseudogap [Yuli et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 197003 (2009)]. We describe the proximity effect in mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal bilayers by using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconductivity orders . The temperature dependent local density of states is calculated as a function of the distance from the interface. Bound state due to both d-wave and spin density wave gaps are formed in the normal metal for energies less than the respective gaps. If there is a mismatch between the Fermi velocities in the two layers we observe that these states will shift in energy when spin density wave order is present, thus inducing a minigap at finite energy. We conclude that the STM measurement in the proximity structures is able to distinguish between the two scenarios proposed for the pseudogap (competing or precursor to superconductivity).
One of the puzzling characteristics of the pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates is the nodal-antinodal dichotomy. While the nodal quasiparticles have a Fermi liquid behaviour, the antinodal ones show non-Fermi liquid features and an associated pseudogap. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electronic Raman scattering are two valuable tools which have shown universal features which are rather material-independent, and presumably intrinsic to the pseudogap phase. The doping and temperature dependence of the Fermi arcs and the pseudogap observed by photoemission near the antinode corr…
We report directional point-contact spectroscopy data on the novel Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe interfacial superconductor for a Bi2Te3 thickness of 9 quintuple layers, bonded by van der Waals epitaxy to a Fe1+yTe film at an atomically sharp interface. Our data show a very large superconducting twin-gap structure with an energy scale exceeding that of bulk FeSe or FeSe1-xTex by a factor of 4. While the larger gap is isotropic and attributed to a thin FeTe layer in proximity of the interface, the smaller gap has a pronounced anisotropy and is associated with proximity-induced superconductivity in the topolog…
The temperature evolution of the proximity effect in Au/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ bilayers was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Proximity induced gaps, centered at the chemical potential, were found to persist above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, and up to nearly the pseudogap crossover temperature in both systems. Such independence of the spectra on the details of the normal metal cap layer is incompatible with a density-wave order origin. However, our results can be accounted for by a penetration of …
We derive a general microscopic expression for the non-linear diamagnetic current in a clean superconductor-insulator-normal metal structure with an arbitrary interface transmission. In the absence of electron-electron interactions in the normal metal the diamagnetic response increases monotonously with decreasing temperature showing no sign of paramagnetic reentrance down to T=0. We also analyze the magnetic breakdown of proximity induced Meissner screening. We demonstrate that the magnetic breakdown field should be strongly suppressed in the limit of small interface transmissions while the l…
Using an approach based on quasiclassical Green's functions we present a theoretical study of transport in mesoscopic S/N structures in the diffusive limit. The subgap conductance in S/N structures with barriers (zero bias and finite bias anomalies) are discused. We also analyse the temperature dependence of the conductance variation $δS(T)$ for a Andreev interferometer. We show that besides the well know low temperature maximum a second maximum near $T_c$ may appear. We present the results of studies on the Josephson effect in 4 terminal S/N/S contacts and on the possible sign reversal of the…
Proximity effects and pair currents were measured in epitaxial trilayer \textit{c-axis} junctions comprise of a $PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ barrier sandwiched in between an overdoped $Y_{0.94}Ca_{0.06}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ and underdoped $YBa_2Cu_{2.7}Co_{0.3}O_y$ layers. These junctions had two $\rm T_c$ values of $\rm T_c(high)=84-86$ K and $\rm T_c(low)=50-55$ K, allowing investigation when both electrodes are superconducting, or when only one is superconducting while the other is in its pseudogap regime. For T below $\rm T_c(high)$ but much above $\rm T_c(low)$, two distinct proximity effect transition…
The Adriatico Research Conference on Superconductivity, Andreev Reflection, and Proximity Effect in Mesoscopic Structures took place at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, July 8-11, 1997. The organizers were Elias Burstein, Leonid Glazman, Teun Klapwijk, and Subodh R. Shenoy. We describe some of the central issues discussed at the conference, along with more personal reflections prompted by new developments.
We have measured the electrical transport of submicron ferromagnets (Ni) in contact with a mesoscopic superconductor (Al) for a range of interface resistances. In the geometry measured, the interface and the ferromagnet are measured separately. The ferromagnet itself shows no appreciable superconducting proximity effect, but the ferromagnet/superconductor interface exhibits strong temperature, field and current bias dependences. These effects are dependent on the local magnetic field distribution near the interface arising from the ferromagnet. We find that the temperature dependences may be f…
In the quasi-twodimensional (Q2D) electron gas of an InAs channel between an AlSb substrate and superconducting Niobium layers the proximity effect induces a pair potential so that a Q2D mesoscopic superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) junction forms in the channel. The pair potential is calculated with quasiclassical Green's functions in the clean limit. For such a junction alternating Josephson currents and current-voltage characteristics (CVCs) are computed, using the non-equilibrium quasiparticle wavefunctions which solve the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes Equations. The CVCs e…
Using the strong temperature dependent resistance of a normal metal wire in proximity to a superconductor, we have been able to measure the local temperature of electrons heated by flowing a dc current in a metallic wire to within a few tens of millikelvin at low temperatures. By placing two such thermometers at different parts of a sample, we have been able to measure the temperature difference induced by a dc current flowing in the sample. This technique may provide a flexible means of making quantitative thermal and thermoelectric measurements on mesoscopic metallic samples.
The fluctuating superconducting correlations emerging in dirty hybrid structures in conditions of the strong proximity effect are demonstrated to affect the validity range of the widely used formalism of Usadel equations at mesoscopic scales. In superconductor -- ferromagnet (SF) structures these giant mesoscopic fluctuations originating from the interference effects for the Cooper pair wave function in the presence of the exchange field can be responsible for an anomalously slow decay of superconducting correlations in a ferromagnet even when the non-collinear and spin-orbit effects are negli…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of a two-terminal mesoscopic interferometer based on three V/Cu/V Josephson junctions having nanoscale cross-section. The junctions have been arranged in a double-ring geometry realized by metallic thin film deposition through a suspended mask defined by electron beam lithography. Although a significant amount of asymmetry between the critical current of each junction is observed we show that the interferometer is able to suppress the supercurrent to a level lower than 6 parts per thousand, being here limited by measurement resolution. The pres…
We investigate the properties of complex mesoscopic superconducting-normal hybrid devices, Andreev-Interferometers in the case, where the current is proped through a superconducting tunneling contact whereas the proximity effect is generated by a transparent SN-interface. We show within the quasiclassical Green's functions technique, how the fundamental SNIS-element of the such structures can be mapped onto an effective S$^\prime$IS-junction, where S$^\prime$ is the proximised material with an effective energy gap $E_g<Δ$. We propose the Andreev-Interferometer, where $E_g$ can be tuned by an e…
We report transport measurements down to T=60mK of SININ and SNIN structures in the diffusive limit. We fabricated Al-AlOx/Cu/AlOx/Cu (SININ) and Al/Cu/AlOx/Cu (SNIN) vertical junctions. For the first time, a zero bias anomaly was observed in a metallic SININ structure. We attribute this peak of conductance to coherent multi-reflections of electrons between the two tunnel barriers. This conductance maximum is quantitatively fitted by the relevant theory of mesoscopic SININ structures. When the barrier at the SN interface is removed (SNIN structure), we observe a peak of conductance at finite v…
We investigate the proximity effect in junctions between $N=3$ superconductors under commensurate voltage bias. The bias is chosen to highlight the role of transport processes that exchange multiple Cooper pairs coherently between more than two superconductors. Such non-local processes can be studied in the dc response, where local transport processes do not contribute. We focus on the proximity-induced normal density of states that we investigate in a wide parameter space. We reveal the presence of deep and highly tunable pseudogaps and other rich structures. These are due to a static proximi…
We discuss the magnetic response of clean Ag coated Nb proximity cylinders in the temperature range 150 μK < T < 9 K. In the mesoscopic temperature regime, the normal metal-superconductor system shows the yet unexplained paramagnetic reentrant effect, discovered some years ago [P. Visani, A. C. Mota, and A. Pollini, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 1514 (1990)], superimposing on full Meissner screening. The logarithmic slope of the reentrant paramagnetic susceptibility chi_para(T) \propto \exp(-L/ξ_N) is limited by the condition ξ_N=n L, with ξ_N=\hbar v_F/2 πk_B T, the thermal coherence length and n=1,2,…
Low temperature transport measurements on superconducting film - normal metal wire - superconducting film (SNS) junctions fabricated on the basis of 6 nm thick superconducting polycrystalline PtSi films are reported. The structures with the normal metal wires of two different lengths L=1.5 $μ$m and L=6$μ$m and the same widths W=0.3$μ$m are studied. Zero bias resistance dip related to pair current proximity effect is observed for all junctions whereas the subharmonic energy gap structure originating from phase coherent multiple Andreev reflections have occurs only in the SNS junctions with shor…
Interference of proximity induced superconducting correlations in mesoscopic metallic rings is sensitive to the magnetic flux $Φ$ inside these rings. This is the reason for magnetoconductance oscillations in such systems. We detected experimentally and explained theoretically a novel effect: the phase of these oscillations can switch between 0 and $π$ depending on the resistance of intermetallic interfaces and temperature. The effect is due to a nontrivial interplay between the proximity induced enhancement of the local conductivity and the proximity induced suppression of the density of state…
Charge transport properties of a diffusive normal metal /triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junction are studied based on the Keldysh-Nambu quasiclassical Green's function formalism. % Contrary to the unconventional singlet superconductor junction case, the mid gap Andreev resonant state (MARS) at the interface of the TS is shown to enhance the proximity effect in the DN. % The total resistance of the DN/TS junction is drastically reduced and is completely independent of the resistance of the DN in the extreme case. % Such anomalous transport accompanies a giant zero-bias peak in the conductance s…
We investigate one aspect of the proximity effect, viz., the local density of states of a superconductor-normal metal sandwich. In contrast to earlier work, we allow for the presence of an arbitrary concentration of impurities in the structure. The superconductor induces a gap in the normal metal spectrum that is proportional to the inverse of the elastic mean free path l_N for rather clean systems. For a mean free path much shorter than the thickness of the normal metal, we find a gap size proportional to l_N that approaches the behavior predicted by the Usadel equation (diffusive limit). We …
The pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates is controversially attributed to preformed pairs or to a phase which coexists and competes with superconductivity. One of the challenges is to develop theoretical and experimental studies in order to distinguish between both proposals. Very recently, researchers at Stanford have reported [M. Hashimoto {\it et al.}, Nat. Phys. {\bf 6}, 414 (2010); R.-H. He {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 331}, 1579 (2011)] angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on Pb-Bi2201 supporting the point of view that the pseudogap is distinct from superconductivity and…
We investigate the suppression of the proximity effect in mesoscopic normal metal/superconductor systems induced by Coulomb interaction. We identify and elucidate the mechanism by which disorder leads to an amplification of this effect. In particular, for strong enough disorder, the proximity effect is shown to vanish. An expression for the tunneling density of states is obtained, and experimental applications are discussed.
We study differential shot noise in mesoscopic diffusive normal-superconducting (NS) heterostructures at finite voltages where nonlinear effects due to the superconducting proximity effect arise. A numerical scattering-matrix approach is adopted. Through an NS contact, we observe that the shot noise shows a reentrant dependence on voltage due to the superconducting proximity effect but the differential Fano factor stays approximately constant. Furthermore, we consider differential shot noise in the structures where an insulating barrier is formed between normal and superconducting regions and …
The transport through a metal-superconductor interface is governed by a special charge conversion process, the Andreev reflection, where each incident electron drags another electron with itself to form a Cooper pair. At the normal side a hole is left behind dressed by superconducting correlations. For a low transparency interface the simultaneous transfer of two charges is strongly suppressed leading to a reduced conductance. Here we demonstrate that this reduced conductance can be turned to an infinite one by tuning the nanoscale geometry. Creating variable size nanojunctions between a thin …
In order to study the possible superconductivity at the polar surfaces of 1111-type iron-based superconductors, which is doped with a large amount of holes in spite of the electron doping in bulk materials, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on superconducting PrFeAsO$_{1-y}$~crystals. We have indeed observed the opening of a superconducting gap on surface-derived hole pockets as well as on a bulk-derived hole pocket. The superconducting gap is found to open on the surface-derived hole pockets below the bulk $T_c$, which suggests that the surface superc…
Since the three dimensional (3D) Dirac semi-metal Cd$_3$As$_2$ exists close to topological phase boundaries, in principle it should be possible to drive it into exotic new phases, like topological superconductors, by breaking certain symmetries. Here we show that the mesoscopic point-contacts between silver (Ag) and Cd$_3$As$_2$ exhibit superconductivity up to a critical temperature (onset) of 6 K while neither Cd$_3$As$_2$ nor Ag are superconductors. A gap amplitude of 6.5 meV is measured spectroscopically in this phase that varies weakly with temperature and survives up to a remarkably high …
In mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor (SNS) heterostructures, it is known that the resistance of the normal metal between the superconductors has a strong temperature dependence. Based on this phenomenon, we have developed a new type of thermometer, which dramatically enhances our ability to measure the local electron temperature Te at low temperatures. Using this technique, we have been able to measure small temperature gradients across a micron-size sample, opening up the possibility of quantitatively measuring the thermal properties of mesoscopic devices.
Andreev levels deplete energy states above the superconductive gap, which leads to the peculiar nonmonotonous crossover in the local density of states of mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor junctions. This effect is especially pronounced in the case when the normal metal bridge length is small compared to the superconductive coherence length. Remarkable property of the crossover function is that it vanishes not only at the proximity induced gap but also at the superconductive gap. Analytical expressions for the density of states at the both gap edges, as well as general struc…
The normal state of the recently discovered Iron Selenide (FeSe)-based superconductors shows a range of inexplicable features. Along with bad-metallic resistivity, characteristic pseudogap features and proximity to insulating states, reminiscent of the underdoped high-Tc cuprates, mark these systems as strongly correlated non-Fermi Liquid metals. Here, using the first-principles LDA+DMFT method, we show how strong multi-orbital correlation-induced orbital-selective Mott-like physics leads to an orthogonality catastrophe underpinning these inexplicable incoherent features. Excellent agreement w…
We consider superconductivity nucleation in multiply connected mesoscopic samples such as thin-walled cylinders or rings placed in electrical contact with a ferromagnet. The superconducting critical temperature and order parameter structure are studied on the basis of linearized Usadel equations. We suggest a mechanism of switching between the superconducting states with different vorticities caused by the exchange field and associated with the oscillatory behavior of the Cooper pair wave function in a ferromagnet.
We analyze pseudogap phenomena widely observed in the underdoped cuprates. We assume the existence of a strong d-wave pairing force competing with antiferromagnetic(AFM) fluctuations and the formation of flat and damped dispersion around the $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ region as two important elements caused by the proximity from the Mott insulator. Using the mode-mode coupling theory for the d-wave superconducting(dSC) and AFM fluctuations, we reproduce basic properties of the pseudogap seen in the magnetic resonance, neutron scattering, angle resolved photoemission and tunneling measurements in the …
Superconducting double-loop interferometers (bi-SQUIDs) have been introduced to produce magnetic flux sensors specifically designed to exhibit ultra-highly linear voltage response as a function of the magnetic flux. These devices are very important for the quantum sensing and for signal processing of signals oscillating at the radio-frequencies range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we report an Al double-loop bi-SQUIDs based on proximitized mesoscopic Cu Josephson junctions. Such a scheme provides an alternative fabrication approach to conventional tunnel junction-based interferometers,…
We study mesoscopic fluctuations and weak localization correction to the supercurrent in Josephson junctions with coherent diffusive electron dynamics in the normal part. Two kinds of junctions are considered: a chaotic dot coupled to superconductors by tunnel barriers and a diffusive junction with transparent normal--superconducting interfaces. The amplitude of current fluctuations and the weak localization correction to the average current are calculated as functions of the ratio between the superconducting gap and the electron dwell energy, temperature, and superconducting phase difference …
The unclear relationship between cuprate superconductivity and the pseudogap state remains an impediment to understanding the high transition temperature (Tc) superconducting mechanism. Here we employ magnetic-field-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy to provide phase-sensitive proof that d-wave superconductivity coexists with the pseudogap on the antinodal Fermi surface of an overdoped cuprate. Furthermore, by tracking the hole doping (p) dependence of the quasiparticle interference pattern within a single Bi-based cuprate family, we observe a Fermi surface reconstruction slightly below o…
A superconducting state is characterized by the gap in the electronic density of states which vanishes at the superconducting transition temperature Tc. It was discovered that in high temperature superconductors a noticeable depression in the density of states still remains even at temperatures above Tc; this feature being called pseudogap. Here we show that a pseudogap exists in a conventional superconductor: ultrathin titanium nitride films over a wide range of temperatures above Tc. Our study reveals that this pseudogap state is induced by superconducting fluctuations and favored by two-dim…
We study the emergent proximity effect in mesoscopic circuits that involve a conventional superconductor and an unconventional pnictide superconductor separated by a diffusive normal or ferromagnetic wire. The focus is placed on revealing signatures of the proposed s+- state of pnictides from the proximity-induced density of states and Josephson current. We find analytically a universal result for the density of states that exhibits both the Thouless gap at low energies, and peculiar features near the superconducting gap edges at higher energies. The latter may be used to discriminate between …
We study mesoscopic disorder fluctuations in an anisotropic gap superconductor, which lead to the spatial variations of the local pairing temperature and formation of superconducting islands above the mean-field transition. We derive the probability distribution function of the pairing temperatures and superconducting gaps. It is shown that above the mean-field transition, a disordered BCS superconductor with an unusual pairing symmetry is described by a network of superconducting islands and metallic regions with a strongly suppressed density of states due to superconducting fluctuations. We …
Thermodynamic and transport properties of normal disordered conductors are strongly influenced by the proximity of a superconductor. A cooperation between mesoscopic coherence and Andreev scattering of particles from the superconductor generates new types of interference phenomena. We introduce a field theoretic approach capable of exploring both averaged properties and mesoscopic fluctuations of superconductor/normal-metal systems. As an example the method is applied to the study of the level statistics of a SNS-junction.
We use a maximum entropy technique to obtain the electron-boson spectral density from optical scattering rate data across the underdoped region of the Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_6 (Bi-2201) phase diagram. Our method involves a generalization of previous work which explicitly include finite temperature and the opening of a pseudogap which modifies the electronic structure. We find that the mass enhancement factor λassociated with the electron-boson spectral density increases monotonically with reduced doping and closer proximity to the Mott antiferromagnetic insulating state. This observation is consi…
Superconducting mechanism of cuprates is discussed in the light of the proximity of the Mott insulator. The proximity accompanied by suppression of coherence takes place in an inhomogeneous way in the momentum space in finite-dimensional systems. Studies on instabilities of metals consisted of such differentiated electrons in the momentum space are reviewed from a general point of view. A typical example of the differentiation is found in the flattening of the quasiparticle dispersion discovered around momenta $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ on 2D square lattices. This flattening even controls the critica…
By combining very low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy on a TiN film we have observed a non uniform state comprising of superconducting (S) and normal (N) areas. The local density of states displays a spatial dependence between S and N different from the usual proximity effect. We conclude that mesoscopic fluctuations might play a major role in accordance with recent theories on superconductor-normal metal quantum transition.
Nonlocal supercurrent was observed in mesoscopic planar SNS Josephson junction with additional normal metal electrodes when nonequilibrium quasiparticles were injected from the normal metal electrode in one of the superconducting banks of the Josephson junction in the absence of net transport current through the junction. We claim that the effect observed is due to a supercurrent counterflow appearing to compensate the quasiparticle flow in the SNS weak link. We have measured SNS junction response for different distances from the quasiparticle injector to the SNS junction at temperatures far b…
Applying the linearized Usadel equations, we consider the nucleation of superconductivity in multiply connected mesoscopic superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) hybrids such as a thin superconducting ring on a ferromagnet with a uniform in-plane magnetization M and a spin-active S/F interface. We demonstrate that the exchange field in F provokes a switching between superconducting states with different vorticities which may increase the critical temperature ( Tc ) of the superconductor in a magnetic field. We study the interplay between oscillations in Tc due to the Little--Parks effect and oscilla…
Aspects of electron critical differentiation are clarified in the proximity of the Mott insulator. The flattening of the quasiparticle dispersion appears around momenta $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ on square lattices and determines the criticality of the metal-insulator transition with the suppressed coherence in that momentum region of quasiparticles. Such coherence suppression at the same time causes an instability to the superconducting state if a proper incoherent process is retained. The d-wave pairing interaction is generated from such retained processes without disturbance from the coherent sing…
We extend the circuit theory of superconductivity to cover transport and proximity effect in mesoscopic systems that contain unconventional superconductor junctions. The approach fully accounts for zero-energy Andreev bound states forming at the surface of unconventional superconductors. As a simple application, we investigate the transport properties of a diffusive normal metal in series with a d-wave superconductor junction. We reveal the competition between the formation of Andreev bound states and proximity effect, that depends on the crystal orientation of the junction interface.
Recent discovery of superconducting (SC) ternary iron selenides has block antiferromagentic (AFM) long range order. Many experiments show possible mesoscopic phase separation of the superconductivity and antiferromagnetism, while the neutron experiment reveals a sizable suppression of magnetic moment due to the superconductivity indicating a possible phase coexistence. Here we propose that the observed suppression of the magnetic moment may be explained due to the proximity effect within a phase separation scenario. We use a two-orbital model to study the proximity effect on a layer of block A…
The thermopower of mesoscopic normal metal/superconductor structures has been measured at low temperatures. Effect of supercurrent present in normal part of the structure was studied in two cases: when it was created by applied external magnetic field and when it was applied directly using extra superconducting electrodes. Temperature and magnetic field dependencies of thermopower are compared to the numerical simulations based on the quasiclassical theory of the superconducting proximity effect.
We study shot noise in mesoscopic diffusive wires between a normal and a superconducting terminal. We particularly focus on the regime, in which the proximity-induced reentrance effect is important. We will examine the difference between a simple Boltzmann-Langevin description, which neglects induced correlations beyond the simple conductivity correction, and a full quantum calculation. In the latter approach, it turns out that two Andreev pairs propagating coherently into the normal metal are anti-correlated for E<E_c, where E_c=D/L^2 is the Thouless energy. In a fork geometry the flux-sensit…
Considering a $d$-wave superconductor being in proximity to a two-dimensional Weyl model, a topological superconductor with gapless edge states may be realized. We here demonstrate that the system can become topologically trivial when an additional d-density-wave order is also included. The edge states become gapped and may be detected in experiments. For this, the d-density-wave order can be detected experimentally, so that different scenarios for the pseudogap in high-T$_c$ superconductors may be distinguished. Moreover, this method may be used to detect various hidden orders through putting…
We consider the proximity effects in hybrid superconductor (S) - ferromagnet (F) structures drawing attention to the induced ferromagnetism of the S metal. The analysis is based on a quasiclassical theory of proximity effect for metals in the dirty limit conditions. It is shown that, below the superconducting critical temperature, ferromagnetic correlations extend a distance of order of the superconducting coherence length ξ_{S} into the superconductor, being dependent on the S/F interface parameters. We argue that the properties of mesoscopic SF hybrids may drastically depend upon the magneti…
We have identified the unscreened Froehlich electron-phonon interaction (EPI) as the most essential for pairing in cuprate superconductors as now confirmed by isotope substitution, recent angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), and some other experiments. Low-energy physics is that of mobile lattice polarons and bipolarons in the strong EPI regime. Many experimental observations have been predicted or explained in the framework of our "Coulomb-Froehlich" model, which fully takes into account the long-range Coulomb repulsion and the Froehlich EPI. They include pseudo-gaps, unusual isotope effects…
Many theoretical approaches find d-wave superconductivity in the prototypical one-band Hubbard model for high-temperature superconductors. At strong-coupling (U > W, where U is the on-site repulsion and W=8t the bandwidth) pairing is controlled by the exchange energy J=4t^2/U. One may then surmise, ignoring retardation effects, that near-neighbor Coulomb repulsion V will destroy superconductivity when it becomes larger than J, a condition that is easily satisfied in cuprates for example. Using Cellular Dynamical Mean-Field theory with an exact diagonalization solver for the extended Hubbard mo…
We study the electronic density of states in a mesoscopic superconductor near a transparent interface with a ferromagnetic metal. In our tunnel spectroscopy experiment, a substantial density of states is observed at sub-gap energies close to a ferromagnet. We compare our data with detailed calculations based on the Usadel equation, where the effect of the ferromagnet is treated as an effective boundary condition. We achieve an excellent agreement with theory when non-ideal quality of the interface is taken into account.
Superconductivity is shown to be completely destroyed in thin mesoscopic or nanoscopic rings closed by the junction with a noticeable interfacial pair breaking and/or a Josephson coupling, if a ring's radius r is less than the minimum radius r_min. The quantity r_min depends on the phase difference across the junction, or on the magnetic flux that controls the phase difference in the flux-biased ring. It also depends on the Josephson and interfacial effective coupling constants, and in particular, on whether the ring is closed by 0 or pi junction. The current-phase relation is substantially mo…
We study the influence of superconducting correlations on the electronic specific heat in a diffusive superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junction. We present a description of this system in the framework of the diffusive-limit Green's function theory, taking into account finite temperatures, phase difference as well as junction parameters. We find that proximity effect may lead to a substantial deviation of the specific heat as compared to that in the normal state, and that it can be largely tuned in magnitude by changing the phase difference between the superconductors. A me…
The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities like the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ. Increasing …
A short introduction to the theory of matrix quasiclassical Green's functions is given and possible applications of this theory to transport properties of mesoscopic superconducting-normal metal (S/N) structures are considered. We discuss a simplified version of these equations in the diffusive regime and in the case of a weak proximity effect. These equations are used for the calculation of the conductance of different S/N structures. Long-range, phase-coherent effects are studied in a 4-terminal S/N/S structures under conditions when the Josephson critical current is negligible. It is shown …
Thermodynamic and transport properties of mesoscopic conductors are strongly influenced by the proximity of a superconductor: An interplay between the large scale quantum coherent wave functions in the normal mesoscopic and the superconducting region, respectively, leads to unusual mechanisms of quantum interference. These manifest themselves in both the mean and the mesoscopic fluctuation behaviour of superconductor/normal-metal (SN) hybrid systems being strikingly different from those of conventional mesoscopic systems. After reviewing some established theories of SN-quantum interference phe…
