We discuss the impact of many previously neglected effects of higher dimensional operators when fitting to Electroweak Precision data (EWPD) in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We calculate the general case of $2 \rightarrow 2$ fermion scattering in the SMEFT to order $\mathcal{O}(\bar{v}_T^2/Λ^2)$ valid on and off the $Z$ pole, in the massless fermion limit. We demonstrate that previously neglected corrections scale as $Γ_Z M_Z/\bar{v}_T^2$ in the partial widths extracted from measured cross sections at LEPI, compared to the leading effect of dimension six operators in anomalous $Z$ couplings. Further, constraints on leading effects of anomalous $Z$ couplings are also modified by neglected perturbative corrections and dimension eight operators. We perform a minimal EWPD fit to illustrate the size of the error these corrections induce, when bounding leading effects. These considerations relax bounds compared to a naive leading order analysis, and show that constraints that rise above the percent level are subject to substantial theoretical uncertanties. We also argue that renormalization group running global constraints expressed through $χ^2$ functions to a common scale, and then minimizing and performing a global fit of all data allows more consistent constraints to be obtained in the SMEFT.
We perform an updated fit to LHC Higgs data and LEP electroweak precision tests in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We assume a generic structure of the SMEFT operators without imposing any flavour symmetries. The implementation is released as part of the public global SMEFT likelihood. This allows one to fit parameters of a broad class of new physics models to combined Higgs, electroweak, quark flavour, and lepton flavour observables.
In these proceedings we present the latest developments in our effort to include vector boson scattering (VBS) measurements into global SMEFT fits of LHC data. We present some updates to our initial study of arXiv:2101.03180 as well as comment on a possible road map for the inclusion of higher orders beyond dimension 6 in the SMEFT and on the interpretation of VBS data in other EFT frameworks.
We compute the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak corrections to $Z$ and $W$ pole observables using the dimension-6 Standard Model effective field theory and present numerical results that can easily be included in global fitting programs. Limits on SMEFT coefficient functions are presented at leading order and at next-to-leading order under several assumptions.
Higgs decays to gauge boson pairs are a crucial ingredient in the study of Higgs properties, with the decay $H\rightarrowγγ$ being particularly sensitive to new physics effects. Assuming all potential new physics occurs at energies much above the weak scale, deviations from Standard Model predictions can be parameterized in terms of the coefficients of an effective field theory (SMEFT). When experimental limits on the SMEFT coefficients reach an accuracy of a few percent, predictions must be done beyond the lowest order in the SMEFT in order to match theory and experimental accuracy. This pape…
The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) provides a powerful theoretical framework for searching for subtle deviations from the Standard Model. In this talk, we present the results from a global fit of the dimension-6 operators of the SMEFT to a combination of Higgs, top, diboson and electroweak precision observables. SMEFT constraints driven by data from the top quark sector are highlighted. We explore the interplay between the top and Higgs sectors, emphasising the need for a global approach to constraining the SMEFT.
We present a global analysis of the Higgs and electroweak sector, in the SMEFT framework and matched to a UV-completion. As the UV-model we use the triplet extension of the electroweak gauge sector. The matching is performed at one loop, employing functional methods. In the SFitter analysis, we pay particular attention to theory uncertainties arising from the matching. Our results highlight the complementarity between SMEFT and model-specific analyses.
Drell Yan production is a sensitive probe of new physics and as such has been calculated to high order in both the electroweak and QCD sectors of the Standard Model, allowing for precision comparisons between theory and data. Here we extend these calculations to the Standard Model Effective field theory (SMEFT) and present the NLO QCD and electroweak contributions to the neutral Drell Yan process that are linear in the Wilson coefficients of the SMEFT theory.
There are two canonical approaches to treating the Standard Model as an Effective Field Theory (EFT): Standard Model EFT (SMEFT), expressed in the electroweak symmetric phase utilizing the Higgs doublet, and Higgs EFT (HEFT), expressed in the broken phase utilizing the physical Higgs boson and an independent set of Goldstone bosons. HEFT encompasses SMEFT, so understanding whether SMEFT is sufficient motivates identifying UV theories that require HEFT as their low energy limit. This distinction is complicated by field redefinitions that obscure the naive differences between the two EFTs. By re…

We study the processes $pp \to t\bar{t}Z$ and $pp \to tZj$ in the framework of Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), employing conventional cut-and-count as well as machine learning techniques to take advantage of kinematic information in complex final states involving multiple leptons and $b$ jets. We explore the projected sensitivity for two SMEFT operators, $\mathcal{O}_{tZ}$ and $\mathcal{O}_{tW}$, that induce electroweak dipole moment interactions for top quarks, through direct searches in these electroweak top production processes at the HL-LHC. New physics modifications to domi…
We compute the one-loop corrections to $Z$ decay properties from dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) that contribute also to anomalous 3-gauge boson couplings and examine the relative sensitivity of the two processes to the anomalous couplings. The size of the contributions is of order a few percent, of the same size as Standard Model electroweak corrections. This is part of a program of computing electroweak quantities to one-loop in the SMEFT: these calculations are needed for a future global fit to limit the coefficients of the dimension-six Wilson coe…
We revisit electroweak radiative corrections to Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) operators which are relevant for the $B$-meson semileptonic decays. The one-loop matching formulae onto the low-energy effective field theory are provided without imposing any flavor symmetry. The on-shell conditions are applied especially in dealing with quark-flavor mixings. Also, the gauge independence is shown explicitly in the $R_ξ$ gauge.
The conventional oblique parameters analyses of precision electroweak data can be consistently cast in the modern framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) when restrictions are imposed on the SMEFT parameter space so that it describes universal theories. However, the usefulness of such analyses is challenged by the fact that universal theories at the scale of new physics, where they are matched onto the SMEFT, can flow to nonuniversal theories with renormalization group (RG) evolution down to the electroweak scale, where precision observables are measured. The departure f…
We study the forward-backward asymmetry $A_{FB}$ in $pp \to \ell^+\ell^-$ at the Z peak within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We find that this observable provides per mille level constraints on the vertex corrections of the Z boson to quarks, which close a flat direction in the electroweak precision SMEFT fit. Moreover, we show that current $A_{FB}$ data is precise enough so that its inclusion in the fit improves significantly LEP bounds even in simple New Physics setups. This demonstrates that the LHC can compete with and complement LEP when it comes to precision measureme…
We study Yukawa Renormalization Group (RG) running effects in the context of the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT).The Yukawa running being flavour dependent leads to RG-induced off-diagonal entries, so that initially diagonal Yukawa matrices at the high scale have to be rediagonalized at the electroweak (EW) scale. Performing such flavour rotations can lead to flavour violating operators which differ from the ones obtained through SMEFT RG evolution. We show, that these flavour rotations can have a large impact on low-energy phenomenology. In order to demonstrate this effect, we compare…

Electroweak interactions assign a central role to the gauge group $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$, which is either realized linearly (SMEFT) or nonlinearly (e.g., HEFT) in the effective theory obtained when new physics above the electroweak scale is integrated out. Although the discovery of the Higgs boson has made SMEFT the default assumption, nonlinear realization remains possible. The two can be distinguished through their predictions for the size of certain low-energy dimension-6 four-fermion operators: for these, HEFT predicts $O(1)$ couplings, while in SMEFT they are suppressed by a factor $v^2/…
Recently the CDF collaboration at the Tevatron reported a significant discrepancy between the direct measurement of the $W$-boson mass and its Standard Model (SM) prediction based on electroweak precision tests (EWPTs). In this paper we explore the potential origin of this discrepancy from physics beyond the SM. Explicitly, we work on a set of six-dimensional operators in the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) which are relevant to the EWPTs. By fitting to the data, we demonstrate that an upward shift in $m_W$ is driven by the operator $\mathcal{O}_{T}=\frac{1}{2}(H^{\dagger}\overset{\text{$\le…
The interpretation of electroweak precision data in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory is discussed. One loop corrections $\propto y_t^2, λ$ to the partial $Z$ decay widths and ratios of partial widths in this theory are discussed. A reparameterization invariance and the non-minimal character of matching onto this theory is reviewed.

We explore the interplay of New Physics (NP) effects in $(g-2)_\ell$ and $h \to \ell^+ \ell^-$ within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework, including one-loop Renormalization Group (RG) evolution of the Wilson coefficients as well as matching to the observables below the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. We include both the leading dimension six chirality flipping operators including a Higgs and $SU(2)_L$ gauge bosons as well as four-fermion scalar and tensor operators, forming a closed operator set under the SMEFT RG equations. We investigate the information that can be gained by including flavour data in fits of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with the assumption of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), allowing - as initial conditions at the high scale - leading terms in spurionic Yukawas only. Starting therefore from a theory with no tree level flavour changing neutral currents at the scale of new physics, we calculate effects in flavour changing processes at one loop, and the resulting constraints on linear combinations of SMEFT coefficients, consistently parameterising the electroweak parameters and…
Modified interactions in the electroweak sector may lead to scattering amplitudes that grow with energy compared to their Standard Model (SM) counterparts. We present a detailed study of all $2\to2$ scattering amplitudes involving at least one top quark and a pair of EW bosons. We analyse the high energy behaviour of the amplitudes using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to parametrise the departures from the SM. We discuss the origin of the energy growth that arise from effective contact interactions by appealing to the Goldstone equivalence theorem and find that the amplitude…
We calculate the $\mathcal{O}(\langle H^{\dagger} H \rangle^{2} / Λ^{4} )$ corrections to LEP electroweak precision data using the geometric formulation of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We report our results in simple-to-use interpolation tables that allow the interpretation of this data set to dimension eight for the first time. We demonstrate the impact of these previously unknown terms in the case of a general analysis in the SMEFT, and also in the cases of two distinct models matched to dimension eight. Neglecting such dimension-eight corrections to LEP observables int…

We use the Fitmaker tool to incorporate the recent CDF measurement of $m_W$ in a global fit to electroweak, Higgs, and diboson data in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) including dimension-6 operators at linear order. We find that including any one of the SMEFT operators ${\cal O}_{HWB}$, ${\cal O}_{HD}$, ${\cal O}_{\ell \ell}$ or ${\cal O}_{H \ell}^{(3)}$ with a non-zero coefficient could provide a better fit than the Standard Model, with the strongest pull for ${\cal O}_{HD}$ and no tension with other electroweak precision data. We then analyse which tree-level single-field e…
Wilson is a Python library for matching and running Wilson coefficients of higher-dimensional operators beyond the Standard Model. Provided with the numerical values of the Wilson coefficients at a high new physics scale, it automatically performs the renormalization group evolution within the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), matching onto the weak effective theory (WET) at the electroweak scale, and QCD/QED renormalization group evolution below the electroweak scale down to hadronic scales relevant for low-energy precision tests. The matching and running encompasses the complete…
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have recently released significant new data on Higgs and diboson production in LHC Run 2. Measurements of Higgs properties have improved in many channels, while kinematic information for $h \to γγ$ and $h \to ZZ$ can now be more accurately incorporated in fits using the STXS method, and $W^+ W^-$ diboson production at high $p_T$ gives new sensitivity to deviations from the Standard Model. We have performed an updated global fit to precision electroweak data, $W^+W^-$ measurements at LEP, and Higgs and diboson data from Runs 1 and 2 of the LHC in the framework o…
At energies below the electroweak scale, baryon number $B$ and lepton number $L$ violating processes are of significant importance in identifying the nature of UV extensions of the Standard Model. The imprint of UV theories on low-energy measurements can be calculated to a high accuracy using the theoretical framework of the Low Energy Effective Theory (LEFT). Using $B,\; L$ and the operators' dimensions as classifying characteristics, we construct a network connecting operator classes of the LEFT with the Standard Model Effective Theory (SMEFT). Following the links of this network, the contac…
At the LHC, top quarks can be produced singly with a sizeable rate via electroweak interactions. This process probes a limited set of top-quark electroweak couplings, i.e. , the same entering the top-quark decay, yet at higher scales and with a different sensitivity. Requiring the production of a $Z$ or $H$ boson in association with single-top significantly extends the sensitivity of this process to new physics, opening up the unique possibility of testing top-Higgs, top-gauge, triple gauge, gauge-Higgs interactions without being dominated by QCD interactions. We consider $tZj$ and $tHj$ produ…

We study the potential for precision electroweak (EW) measurements and beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) searches using cross-section asymmetries in neutral-current (NC) deep inelastic scattering at the electron-ion collider (EIC). Our analysis uses a complete and realistic accounting of systematic errors from both theory and experiment and considers the potential of both proton and deuteron beams for a wide range of energies and luminosities. We also consider what can be learned from a possible future positron beam and a potential ten-fold luminosity upgrade of the EIC beyond its initial decade…
The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) offers a powerful theoretical framework for parameterizing the low-energy effects of heavy new particles with masses far above the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. Additional light degrees of freedom extend the effective theory. We show that light new particles that are weakly coupled to the SM via non-renormalizable interactions induce non-zero Wilson coefficients in the SMEFT Lagrangian via renormalization-group evolution. For the well-motivated example of axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with the SM via classically s…
The search for effective field theory deformations of the Standard Model (SM) is a major goal of particle physics that can benefit from a global approach in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We prese…
