A wide range of problems can be modelled as constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), that is, a set of constraints that must be satisfied simultaneously. Constraints can either be represented extensionally, by explicitly listing allowed combinations of values, or implicitly, by special-purpose algorithms provided by a solver.
Such implicitly represented constraints, known as global constraints, are widely used; indeed, they are one of the key reasons for the success of constraint programming in solving real-world problems. In recent years, a variety of restrictions on the structure of CSP instances have been shown to yield tractable classes of CSPs. However, most such restrictions fail to guarantee tractability for CSPs with global constraints. We therefore study the applicability of structural restrictions to instances with such constraints.
We show that when the number of solutions to a CSP instance is bounded in key parts of the problem, structural restrictions can be used to derive new tractable classes. Furthermore, we show that this result extends to combinations of instances drawn from known tractable classes, as well as to CSP instances where constraints assign costs to satisfying assignments.

Several variants of the Constraint Satisfaction Problem have been proposed and investigated in the literature for modelling those scenarios where solutions are associated with some given costs. Within these frameworks computing an optimal solution is an NP-hard problem in general; yet, when restricted over classes of instances whose constraint interactions can be modelled via (nearly-)acyclic graphs, this problem is known to be solvable in polynomial time. In this paper, larger classes of tractable instances are singled out, by discussing solution approaches based on exploiting hypergraph acyc…
The general intractability of the constraint satisfaction problem has motivated the study of restrictions on this problem that permit polynomial-time solvability. One major line of work has focused on structural restrictions, which arise from restricting the interaction among constraint scopes. In this paper, we engage in a mathematical investigation of generalized hypertree width, a structural measure that has up to recently eluded study. We obtain a number of computational results, including a simple proof of the tractability of CSP instances having bounded generalized hypertree width.
We propose an alternative proof concerning necessary and sufficient conditions to split the problem of searching for d-separators and building the skeleton of a DAG into small problems for every node of a separation tree T. The proof is simpler than the original [1]. The same proof structure has been used in [2] for learning the structure of multivariate regression chain graphs (MVR CGs).
We extend the decomposition approach for learning Bayesian networks (BNs) proposed by (Xie et. al.) to learning multivariate regression chain graphs (MVR CGs), which include BNs as a special case. The same advantages of this decomposition approach hold in the more general setting: reduced complexity and increased power of computational independence tests. Moreover, latent (hidden) variables can be represented in MVR CGs by using bidirected edges, and our algorithm correctly recovers any independence structure that is faithful to an MVR CG, thus greatly extending the range of applications of de…
In this paper, we address the problem of identifying linear structural equation models. We first extend the edge set half-trek criterion to cover a broader class of models. We then show that any semi-Markovian linear model can be recursively decomposed into simpler sub-models, resulting in improved identification power. Finally, we show that, unlike the existing methods developed for linear models, the resulting method subsumes the identification algorithm of non-parametric models.
Tree projections provide a mathematical framework that encompasses all the various (purely) structural decomposition methods that have been proposed in the literature to single out classes of nearly-acyclic (hyper)graphs, such as the tree decomposition method, which is the most powerful decomposition method on graphs, and the (generalized) hypertree decomposition method, which is its natural counterpart on arbitrary hypergraphs. The paper analyzes this framework, by focusing in particular on "minimal" tree projections, that is, on tree projections without useless redundancies. First, it is sho…
We show that some common and important global constraints like ALL-DIFFERENT and GCC can be decomposed into simple arithmetic constraints on which we achieve bound or range consistency, and in some cases even greater pruning. These decompositions can be easily added to new solvers. They also provide other constraints with access to the state of the propagator by sharing of variables. Such sharing can be used to improve propagation between constraints. We report experiments with our decomposition in a pseudo-Boolean solver.

We study decompositions of NVALUE, a global constraint that can be used to model a wide range of problems where values need to be counted. Whilst decomposition typically hinders propagation, we identify one decomposition that maintains a global view as enforcing bound consistency on the decomposition achieves bound consistency on the original global NVALUE constraint. Such decompositions offer the prospect for advanced solving techniques like nogood learning and impact based branching heuristics. They may also help SAT and IP solvers take advantage of the propagation of global constraints.
The structure and performance of neural networks are intimately connected, and by use of evolutionary algorithms, neural network structures optimally adapted to a given task can be explored. Guiding such neuroevolution with additional objectives related to network structure has been shown to improve performance in some cases, especially when modular neural networks are beneficial. However, apart from objectives aiming to make networks more modular, such structural objectives have not been widely explored. We propose two new structural objectives and test their ability to guide evolving neural …
We show that tools from circuit complexity can be used to study decompositions of global constraints. In particular, we study decompositions of global constraints into conjunctive normal form with the property that unit propagation on the decomposition enforces the same level of consistency as a specialized propagation algorithm. We prove that a constraint propagator has a a polynomial size decomposition if and only if it can be computed by a polynomial size monotone Boolean circuit. Lower bounds on the size of monotone Boolean circuits thus translate to lower bounds on the size of decompositi…
We offer a new formalism for global explanations of pairwise feature dependencies and interactions in supervised models. Building upon SHAP values and SHAP interaction values, our approach decomposes feature contributions into synergistic, redundant and independent components (S-R-I decomposition of SHAP vectors). We propose a geometric interpretation of the components and formally prove its basic properties. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of synergy, redundancy and independence by applying them to a constructed data set and model.

We study decompositions of the global NVALUE constraint. Our main contribution is theoretical: we show that there are propagators for global constraints like NVALUE which decomposition can simulate with the same time complexity but with a much greater space complexity. This suggests that the benefit of a global propagator may often not be in saving time but in saving space. Our other theoretical contribution is to show for the first time that range consistency can be enforced on NVALUE with the same worst-case time complexity as bound consistency. Finally, the decompositions we study are readi…
Segmenting dental plaque from images of medical reagent staining provides valuable information for diagnosis and the determination of follow-up treatment plan. However, accurate dental plaque segmentation is a challenging task that requires identifying teeth and dental plaque subjected to semantic-blur regions (i.e., confused boundaries in border regions between teeth and dental plaque) and complex variations of instance shapes, which are not fully addressed by existing methods. Therefore, we propose a semantic decomposition network (SDNet) that introduces two single-task branches to separatel…
For tensor decompositions such as HOSVD and ParaFac, the objective functions are nonconvex. This implies, theoretically, there exists a large number of local optimas: starting from different starting point, the iteratively improved solution will converge to different local solutions. This non-uniqueness present a stability and reliability problem for image compression and retrieval. In this paper, we present the results of a comprehensive investigation of this problem. We found that although all tensor decomposition algorithms fail to reach a unique global solution on random data and severely …

Epistemic logic programs (ELPs) are a popular generalization of standard Answer Set Programming (ASP) providing means for reasoning over answer sets within the language. This richer formalism comes at the price of higher computational complexity reaching up to the fourth level of the polynomial hierarchy. However, in contrast to standard ASP, dedicated investigations towards tractability have not been undertaken yet. In this paper, we give first results in this direction and show that central ELP problems can be solved in linear time for ELPs exhibiting structural properties in terms of bounde…
We propose a sub-structural niching method that fully exploits the problem decomposition capability of linkage-learning methods such as the estimation of distribution algorithms and concentrate on maintaining diversity at the sub-structural level. The proposed method consists of three key components: (1) Problem decomposition and sub-structure identification, (2) sub-structure fitness estimation, and (3) sub-structural niche preservation. The sub-structural niching method is compared to restricted tournament selection (RTS)--a niching method used in hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm…
Decomposition methods have been proposed to approximate solutions to large sequential decision making problems. In contexts where an agent interacts with multiple entities, utility decomposition can be used to separate the global objective into local tasks considering each individual entity independently. An arbitrator is then responsible for combining the individual utilities and selecting an action in real time to solve the global problem. Although these techniques can perform well empirically, they rely on strong assumptions of independence between the local tasks and sacrifice the optimali…
In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient CNN-based framework that leverages local and global context information for image denoising. Due to the limitations of convolution itself, the CNN-based method is generally unable to construct an effective and structured global feature representation, usually called the long-distance dependencies in the Transformer-based method. To tackle this problem, we introduce the matrix decomposition module(MD) in the network to establish the global context feature, comparable to the Transformer based method performance. Inspired by the design of multi-stag…
