We clearly refine the fundamental framework of the thin-layer quantization procedure, and further develop the procedure by taking the proper terms of degree one in $q_3$ ($q_3$ denotes the curvilinear coordinate variable perpendicular to curved surface) back into the surface quantum equation. The well-known geometric potential and kinetic term are modified by the surface thickness. Applying the developed formalism to a toroidal system obtains the modification for the kinetic term and the modified geometric potential including the influence of the surface thickness.
In Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, we deduce the effective quantum mechanics for a particle confined to a curved surface by using the thin-layer quantization scheme. We find that the spin effect caused by confined potential as the results of relativistic correction in the non-relativistic limit. Furthermore, the spin connection appeared in curved surface which depends on curvature contributes a Zeeman-like gap in the relativistic correction term. In addition, the confined potential also induces a curvature-independent energy shift, which is from the zitterbewegung effect. As an example, we ap…
We explore the effective long-range interaction of charged particles confined to a curved low-dimensional manifold using the example of a helical geometry. Opposite to the Coulomb interaction in free space the confined particles experience a force which is oscillating with the distance between the particles. This leads to stable equilibrium configurations and correspondingly induced bound states whose number is tunable with the parameters of the helix. We demonstrate the existence of a plethora of equilibria of few-body chains with different symmetry character that are allowed to freely move. …
In the spirit of the thin-layer quantization approach, we give the formula of the geometric influences of a particle confined to a curved surface embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space. The geometric contributions can result from the reduced commutation relation between the acted function depending on normal variable and the normal derivative. According to the formula, we obtain the geometric potential, geometric momentum, geometric orbital angular momentum, geometric linear Rashba and cubic Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. As an example, a truncated cone surface is considered. We find…
By considering the spin connection, we deduce the effective equation for a spin-1/2 particle confined to a curved surface with the non-relativistic limit and in the thin-layer quantization formalism. We obtain a pseudo-magnetic field and an effective spin-orbit interaction generated by the spin connection. Geometrically, the pseudo-magnetic field is proportional to the Gaussian curvature and the effective spin-orbit interaction is determined by the Weingarten curvature tensor. Particularly, we find that the pseudo-magnetic field and the effective spin-orbit interaction can be employed to separ…
We develop a method for computing the Bogoliubov transformation experienced by a confined quantum scalar field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime, due to the changes in the geometry and/or the confining boundaries. The method constructs a basis of modes of the field associated to each Cauchy hypersurface, by means of an eigenvalue problem posed in the hypersurface. The Bogoliubov transformation between bases associated to different times can be computed through a differential equation, which coefficients have simple expressions in terms of the solutions to the eigenvalue problem. This transfor…
We develop a method for computing the Bogoliubov transformation experienced by a confined quantum scalar field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime, due to the changes in the geometry and/or the confining boundaries. The method constructs a basis of solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation associated to each compact Cauchy hypersurface of constant time. It then provides a differential equation for the linear transformation between bases at different times. The transformation can be interpreted physically as a Bogoliubov transformation when it connects two regions in which a time symmetry allows fo…
The motion of quantum particles homogeneously constrained to a curved surface is affected by a curvature induced geometric potential. Here, we consider the case of inhomogeneous confinement and derive the effective Hamiltonian by extending thin-layer procedure, where an extra effective potential appears. This effective potential is relevant to the ground state energy perpendicular to the surface and the morphology of the confining potential. Tiny changes in the thickness are envisioned to induce considerable magnitude of the effective potential. To demonstrate the impact of the inhomogeneity, …
We derive the Schroedinger equation for a spinless charged particle constrained to a curved surface with electric and magnetics fields applied. The particle is confined on the surface using a thin-layer procedure, giving rise to the well-known geometric potential. The electric and magnetic fields are included via the four-potential. We find that there is no coupling between the fields and the surface curvature and that, with a proper choice of the gauge, the surface and transverse dynamics are exactly separable. Finally, the Hamiltonian for the cylinder, sphere and torus are analytically deriv…
The curvature potential arising from confining a particle initially in three-dimensional space onto a curved surface is normally derived in the hard constraint $q \to 0$ limit, with $q$ the degree of freedom normal to the surface. In this work the hard constraint is relaxed, and eigenvalues and wave functions are numerically determined for a particle confined to a thin layer in the neighborhood of a toroidal surface. The hard constraint and finite layer (or soft constraint) quantities are comparable, but both differ markedly from those of the corresponding two dimensional system, indicating th…
We consider one particle confined to a deformed one-dimensional wire. The quantum mechanical equivalent of the classical problem is not uniquely defined. We describe several possible hamiltonians and corresponding solutions for a finite wire with fixed endpoints and non-vanishing curvature. We compute and compare the disparate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions obtained from different quantization prescriptions. The JWKB approximation without potential leads precisely to the square well spectrum and the coordinate dependent stretched or compressed box related eigenfunctions. The geometric potentia…
Hole spin qubits are frontrunner platforms for scalable quantum computers because of their large spin-orbit interaction which enables ultrafast all-electric qubit control at low power. The fastest spin qubits to date are defined in long quantum dots with two tight confinement directions, when the driving field is aligned to the smooth direction. However, in these systems the lifetime of the qubit is strongly limited by charge noise, a major issue in hole qubits. We propose here a different, scalable qubit design, compatible with planar CMOS technology, where the hole is confined in a curved ge…
We derive the Pauli equation for a charged spin particle confined to move on a spatially curved surface $\mathcal{S}$ in an electromagnetic field. Using the thin-layer quantization scheme to constrain the particle on $\mathcal{S}$, and in the transformed spinor representations, we obtain the well-known geometric potential $V_g$ and the presence of $e^{-iφ}$, which can generate additive spin connection geometric potentials by the curvilinear coordinate derivatives, and we find that the two fundamental evidences in the literature [Giulio Ferrari and Giampaolo Cuoghi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 230403…
In this work, Schrödinger and Dirac equations will be examined in geometries that confine the particles to hypersurfaces. For this purpose, two methods will be considered. The first method is the thin layer method which relies on explicit use of geometrical relations and the squeezing of a certain coordinate of space (or spacetime). The second is Dirac's quantization procedure involving the modification of canonical quantization making use of the geometrical constraints. For the Dirac equation, only the first method will be considered. Lastly, the results of the two methods will be compared an…
Combination of a construction of unambiguous quantum conditions out of the conventional one and a simultaneous quantization of the positions, momenta, angular momenta and Hamiltonian leads to the geometric potential given by the so-called thin-lay quantization.
The Hamiltonian of an atom with $N$ electrons and a fixed nucleus of infinite mass between two parallel planes is considered in the limit when the distance $a$ between the planes tends to zero. We show that this Hamiltonian converges in the norm resolvent sense to a Schrödinger operator acting effectively in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2N})$ whose potential part depends on $a$. Moreover, we prove that after an appropriate regularization this Schrödinger operator tends, again in the norm resolvent sense, to the Hamiltonian of a two-dimensional atom (with the three-dimensional Coulomb potential-one over …
The propagation of matter waves in curved geometry is relevant for electrons in nano-wires, solid-state physics structures and atomtronics. Curvature effects are usually addressed within the adiabatic limit and treated via an effective potential acting on the manifold to which the particles are strongly confined. However, the strength of the confinements that can be achieved experimentally are in practice limited, and the adiabatic approximation framework often appears too restrictive for the realistic design of relevant propagation structures. Here, we explore the design of 2D sharply bent wa…
The Schrödinger Hamiltonian of a spin zero particle as well as the Pauli Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling included of a spin one-half particle in electromagnetic fields that are confined to a curved surface embedded in a three-dimensional space spanned by a general Orthogonal Curvilinear Coordinate (OCC) are constructed. A new approach, based on the physical argument that upon squeezing the particle to the surface by a potential, then it is the physical gauge-covariant kinematical momentum operator (velocity operator) transverse to the surface that should be dropped from the Hamiltonian(s)…
Non-relativistic particles that are effectively confined to two dimensions can in general move on curved surfaces, allowing dynamical phenomena beyond what can be described with scalar potentials or even vector gauge fields. Here we consider a simple case of piecewise uniform curvature: a particle moves on a plane with a spherical extrusion. Depending on the latitude at which the sphere joins the plane, the extrusion can range from an infinitesimal bump to a nearly full sphere that just touches the plane. Free classical motion on this surface of piecewise uniform curvature follows geodesics th…
