Chemically peculiar stars of the upper part of the main sequence show periodical variability in line intensities and continua, modulated by the stellar rotation, which is attributed to the existence of chemical spots on the surface of these stars. The flux variability is caused by the changing redistribution rate of the radiative flux predominantly from the short-wavelength part of the spectra to the long-wavelength part, which is a result of abundance anomalies. We study the nature of the multi-spectral variability of one of the brightest chemically peculiar stars, $θ$ Aur. We predict the flux variability of $θ$ Aur from the emerging intensities calculated for individual surface elements of the star taking into account horizontal variation of chemical composition derived from Doppler abundance maps. The simulated optical variability in the Strömgren photometric system and the ultraviolet flux variability agree well with observations. The IUE flux distribution is reproduced in great detail by our models. The resonance lines of magnesium and possibly also some lines of silicon are relatively weak in the ultraviolet domain, which indicates non-negligible vertical abundance gradients in the atmosphere. We also derive a new period of the star, $P=3.618\,664(10)$ d, from all available photometric and magnetic measurements and show that the observed rotational period is constant over decades. The ultraviolet and visual variability of $θ$ Aur is mostly caused by silicon bound-free absorption and chromium and iron line absorption. These elements redistribute the flux mainly from the far-ultraviolet region to the near-ultraviolet and optical regions in the surface abundance spots. The light variability is modulated by the stellar rotation. The ultraviolet domain is key for understanding the properties of chemically peculiar stars. (abridged)
In this work, we identify 63 bona fide new candidates to T Tauri stars (TTSs) in the Taurus-Auriga region using as baseline its ultraviolet excess. The initial data set has been defined from the GALEX all sky survey (AIS). The GALEX satellite obtained images in the near ultraviolet (NUV) and far ultraviolet (FUV) bands where the TTSs show a prominent excess, compared with main sequence or giants stars. GALEX AIS surveyed the Taurus-Auriga molecular complex, as well as, a fraction of the California Nebula and the Perseus complex; bright sources and the dark clouds themselves are avoided. The pr…
Continuous photometry with up to three BRITE satellites was obtained for 12 targets and subjected to a period search. Contemporaneous high-resolution optical spectroscopy with STELLA was used to obtain radial velocities through cross correlation with template spectra as well as to determine astrophysical parameters through a comparison with model spectra. The Capella red light curve was found to be constant over 176 days with a root mean square of 1 mmag, but the blue light curve showed a period of 10.1$\pm$0.6 d, which we interpret to be the rotation period of the G0 component. The BRITE ligh…
Chemical abundances studies of cataclysmic variables have revealed high nitrogen to carbon ratios in a number of of cataclysmic variable white dwarfs (based on ultraviolet emission and absorption lines), as well as possible carbon deficiency in many secondaries (based on the absence of infrared CO absorption lines). These indicate that the accreted material on the white dwarf surface and the donor itself might be contaminated with CNO processed material. To further understand the origin of this abundance anomaly, there is a need for further chemical abundance study. In the present work, we car…
Resolved UBVRI photometry of RW Aur binary was performed on November 13/14, 2014 during the deep dimming of RW Aur with a newly installed 2.5 meter telescope of the Caucasus observatory of Lomonosov Moscow State University at the mount Shatzhatmaz. At that moment RW Aur A was $\simeq 3^m$ fainter than in November 1994 in all spectral bands. We explain the current RW Aur A dimming as a result of eclipse of the star by dust particles with size $>1 μm.$ We found that RW Aur B is also a variable star: it was brighter than 20 years ago at $0.7^m$ in each of UBVRI band (gray brightening).
The brightest magnetic chemically peculiar stars theta Aur and eps UMa were targeted by numerous studies of their photometric and spectroscopic variability. Detailed maps of chemical abundance spots were repeatedly derived for both stars. However, very little information on the magnetic field geometries of these stars is available. In this study we aim to determine detailed magnetic field topologies of theta Aur and eps UMa based on modern, high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Both targets were observed in all four Stokes parameters using the Narval and ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter…
V347 Aurigae is associated with the small dark cloud L1438 and appears to be an isolated pre-main sequence star located at distance $d\approx$200 pc. Multi-epoch, archival photometry reveals periodic brightness variations with amplitude $V\approx2.0$ magnitudes occurring on timescales of $\sim$160 days that have persisted for decades. Regular cadence, optical imaging of the source with the Zwicky Transient Facility shows that a small reflection nebula illuminated by V347 Aur also fluctuates in brightness, at times fading completely. Multi-epoch, Keck/HIRES data suggests the presence of two dis…
V582 Aur is a pre-main sequence FU Orionis type eruptive star, which entered a brightness minimum in 2016 March due to changes in the line-of-sight extinction. Here, we present and analyze new optical $B$, $V$, $R_C$ and $I_C$ band multiepoch observations and new near-infrared $J$, $H$ and $K_S$ band photometric measurements from 2018 January$-$2019 February, as well as publicly available mid-infrared WISE data. We found that the source shows a significant optical$-$near-infrared variability, and the current brightness minimum has not completely finished yet. If the present dimming originates …
V582 Aur is an FU Ori-type young eruptive star in outburst since $\sim$1985. The eruption is currently in a relatively constant plateau phase, with photometric and spectroscopic variability superimposed. Here we will characterize the progenitor of the outbursting object, explore its environment, and analyse the temporal evolution of the eruption. We are particularly interested in the physical origin of the two deep photometric dips, one occurred in 2012, and one is ongoing since 2016. We collected archival photographic plates, and carried out new optical, infrared, and millimeter wave photomet…
Moving structures have been detected in coronal bright points and in a solar flare in active regions, which were bi-directional, symmetrical, simultaneous, and quasi-periodic (Ning & Guo 2014; Ning 2016; Li et al. 2016a). They could be regarded as observational evidence of plasma outflows via magnetic reconnection. In this article, we explored pairs of moving structures in fifteen ultraviolet bright points (UBPs), which were observed in the quiet Sun or inside a small active region on 19 November 2020, and measured by the High Resolution (HRI) Telescopes of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI)…
Results of $UBVRIJHKLM$ photometry and $VRI$ polarimetry of a young star RW Aur A observed during unprecedented long and deep (up to $ΔV \approx 5$ mag) dimming events in 2010-11 and 2014-18 are presented. The polarization degree $p$ of RW Aur A at this period has reached 30 per cent in the $I$ band. As in the case of UX Ori type stars (UXORs), the so-called 'bluing effect' in the colour-magnitude $V$ versus $V-R_{\rm c},$ $V-I_{\rm c}$ diagrams of the star and a strong anticorrelation between $p$ and brightness were observed. But the duration and the amplitude of the eclipses as well as the v…
The data of photometric measurements of the long-period eclipsing variable epsilon Aur in the two main minima 1982 and 2010 in the spectral range of 1--5 microns are presented. Noted is the similarity of light curves in eclipse, its asymmetry, and availability of the short interval increased brightness. We are detecting the phase changing of the indicator color J-M and the effect of short-time changing of the color to be more blue at the moments during the beginning and end of the eclipse.
Results of UBVRIJHKLM photometry, VRI polarimetry and optical spectroscopy of a young star RW Aur A obtained during 2010-11 and 2014-16 dimming events are presented. During the second dimming the star decreased its brightness to ΔV > 4.5 mag, polarization of its light in I-band was up to 30%, and color-magnitude diagram was similar to that of UX Ori type stars. We conclude that the reason of both dimmings is an eclipses of the star by dust screen, but the size of the screen is much larger than in the case of UXORs.
We present monitoring observations of the active T Tauri star RW Aur, from 2010 October to 2015 January, using optical high-resolution (R>10000) spectroscopy with CFHT-ESPaDOnS. Optical photometry in the literature shows bright, stable fluxes over most of this period, with lower fluxes (by 2-3 mag.) in 2010 and 2014. In the bright period our spectra show clear photospheric absorption, complicated variation in the Ca II 8542 A emission}profile shapes, and a large variation in redshifted absorption in the O I 7772 and 8446 A and He I 5876 A lines, suggesting unstable mass accretion during this p…
RW Aur is a binary system composed of two young, low-mass stars. The primary, RW Aur A, has undergone visual dimming events ($ΔV =2-3$~mag) in 2011, 2014-16, and 2017-2018. Visual and IR observations indicate a gray absorber that moved into the line-of-sight. This dimming is also associated with changes in the outflow. In 2017, when the optical brightness was almost 2~mag below the long-term average we triggered a Chandra observation to measure the absorbing column density $N_\mathrm{H}$ and to constrain dust properties and the gas-to-dust ratio of the absorber. In 2017, the X-ray spectrum is …
We analyze 3 epochs of ultraviolet (UV), optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Taurus transitional disk GM Aur using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX spectrograph. Observations were separated by one week and 3 months in order to study variability over multiple timescales. We calculate accretion rates for each epoch of observations using the STIS spectra and find that those separated by one week had similar accretion rates (~1E-8 solar masses/yr) while the epoch obtained 3 months later had a substantially lower accreti…
The Atmospheric Response to Large Electron Beam Fluxes in Solar Flares III: Comprehensive Modeling of the Brightest Observed Near-Ultraviolet Continuum Source in an X9 Solar Flare
We present an elemental-abundance analysis, in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectral range, for the bright carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars HD196944 (V = 8.40, [Fe/H] = -2.41) and HD201626 (V = 8.16, [Fe/H] = -1.51), based on data acquired with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both of these stars belong to the sub-class CEMP-s, and exhibit clear over-abundances of heavy elements associated with production by the slow neutron-capture process. HD196944 has been well-studied in the optical region, but we are able to add abundance results for six …
Here we analyze the first simultaneous X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and centimeter observations of a T Tauri star (TTS). We present three epochs of simultaneous Spitzer and VLA data of GM Aur separated by ~1 wk. These data are compared to previously published HST and Chandra observations from which mass accretion rates ($\dot M$) and X-ray luminosities, respectively, were measured. The mid-infrared emission increases along with $\dot M$, and we conclude that this is due to an increase in the mass in the inner disk. The cm emission, which probes the jet, also appears to increase as $\…
The secondary of the famous young binary RW Aur is much less studied than the primary. To compensate this shortcoming, we present here the results of UBVRIJHK photometric, VRI polarimetric and optical spectral observations of RW Aur B. The star demonstrates chaotic brightness variations in the optical band with irregular short (~ 1 day) dimmings with an amplitude $ΔV$ up to $1.3^{\rm m}.$ The dimmings are accompanied with an increase in the linear polarization (up to 3 per cent in the I band), presumably due to the scattering of the stellar radiation by dust in the circumstellar disc that mean…
We present a spectral analysis of the UV-bright star Y453 in M4. Model fits to the star's optical spectrum yield T_eff ~ 56,000 K. Fits to the star's FUV spectrum, obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope, reveal it to be considerably hotter, with T_eff ~ 72,000 K. We adopt T_eff = 72,000 +/- 2000 K and log g = 5.7 +/- 0.2 as our best-fit parameters. Scaling the model spectrum to match the star's optical and near-infrared magnitudes, we derive a mass M_* = 0.53 +/- 0.24 M_sun and luminosity log L/L_sun = 2.84 +/- 0.05, consistent with the values e…
We have studied the environment of the FU Ori type star V582 Aur. Our aim is to explore the star-forming region associated with this young eruptive star. Using slitless spectroscopy we searched for H alpha emission stars within a field of 11.5arcmin \times 11.5arcmin, centred on V582 Aur. Based on UKIDSS and Spitzer Space Telescope data we further selected infrared-excess young stellar object candidates. In all, we identified 68 candidate low-mass young stars, 16 of which exhibited H alpha emission in the slitless spectroscopic images. The colour-magnitude diagram of the selected objects, base…
Classical T Tauri stars with ages of less than 10 Myr possess accretion discs. Magnetohydrodynamic processes at the boundary between the disc and the stellar magnetosphere control the accretion and ejections gas flows. We carried out a long series of simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the classical T Tauri stars RY Tau and SU Aur with the aim to quantify the accretion and outflow dynamics at time scales from days to years. It is shown that dust in the disc wind is the main source of photometric variability of these stars. In RY Tau we observed a new effect: during event…
In this paper, we present a catalogue of the spectra of bright stars observed during the sky survey using the Far-Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (FIMS), which was designed primarily to observe diffuse emissions. By carefully eliminating the contamination from the diffuse background, we obtain the spectra of 70 bright stars observed for the first time with a spectral resolution of 2--3 Å over the wavelength of 1370--1710 Å. The far-ultraviolet spectra of an additional 139 stars are also extracted with a better spectral resolution and/or higher reliability than those of the previous observatio…
We have studied ultraviolet (UV) bright sources in the Galactic globular cluster (GGC) NGC 4590 using Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board the \mbox{\em AstroSat} satellite. Using UV-optical color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we have identified and characterized the sources of different evolutionary stages i.e., blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), extremely blue horizontal branch stars (EHBs), blue straggler stars (BSs), variable stars, etc. We estimated effective temperature (T$_{\mathrm{eff}}$), gravity ($\log$(g)), luminosity (L$_{bol}$), and hence the radius (R) of these hot stars …
We have analyzed FUSE, COS, GHRS, and Keck HIRES spectra of the UV-bright star Barnard 29 in M13 (NGC 6205). By comparing the photospheric abundances derived from multiple ionization states of C, N, O, Si, and S, we infer an effective temperature T_eff = 21,400 +/- 400 K. Balmer-line fits yield a surface gravity log g = 3.10 +/- 0.03. We derive photospheric abundances of He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Ge. Barnard 29 exhibits an abundance pattern typical of the first-generation stars in M13, enhanced in oxygen and depleted in aluminum. An underabundance of C and an o…
We present new high-resolution ($\sim$0\farcs09) $H$-band imaging observations of the circumstellar disk around the T Tauri star SU Aur. Our observations with Subaru-HiCIAO have revealed the presence of scattered light as close as 0\farcs15 ($\sim$20 AU) to the star. Within our image, we identify bright emission associated with a disk with a minimum radius of $\sim$90 AU, an inclination of $\sim$35\degr from the plane of the sky, and an approximate P.A. of 15\degr for the major axis. We find a brightness asymmetry between the northern and southern sides of the disk due to a non-axisymmetric di…
We obtained time-resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the nova-like variable KR Aurigae in the low state. The spectrum reveals a DAB white dwarf and a mid-M dwarf companion. Using the companion star's $i$-band ellipsoidal modulation we refine the binary orbital period to be $P = 3.906519 \pm 0.000001$ h. The light curve and the spectra show flaring activity due to episodic accretion. One of these events produced brightness oscillations at a period of 27.4 min, that we suggest to be related with the rotation period of a possibly magnetic white dwarf at either 27.4 or 54.8 min. Spectr…
