Bloch theorem states the impossibility of persistent electric currents in the ground state of nonrelativistic fermion systems. We extend this theorem to generic systems based on the gauged particle number symmetry and study its consequences on the example of chiral transport phenomena. We show that the chiral magnetic effect can be understood as a generalization of the Bloch theorem to a nonequilibrium steady state, similarly to the integer quantum Hall effect. On the other hand, persistent axial currents are not prohibited by the Bloch theorem and they can be regarded as Pauli paramagnetism of relativistic matter. An application of the generalized Bloch theorem to quantum time crystals is also discussed.
This work predicts that individual Bloch points can be created and stabilized by magnetostatic and chiral interactions in nanocuboids, confined in between two chiral bobbers of opposing polarity. The Bloch point can be moved by an external magnetic field of moderate strength but only if the field strength is enough to overcome a pinning potential that results from intrinsic exchange forces and extrinsic surface effects. The Bloch point can be driven by the external field reversibly, in a direction opposing the field, and it remains stable up to moderate field strengths. At a critical field str…
We study the Bloch spectrum and spin physics of 2D massless Dirac electrons in single layer graphene subject to a one dimensional periodic Kronig-Penney potential and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The Klein paradox exposes novel features in the band dispersion and in graphene spintronics. In particular it is shown that: (1) The Bloch energy dispersion $\veps(p)$ has unusual structure: There are {\it two Dirac points} at Bloch momenta $\pm p \ne 0$ and a narrow band emerges between the wide valence and conduction bands. (2) The charge current and the spin density vector vanish. (3) Yet, all the n…
The 212 species of structural phase transitions which break macroscopic symmetry are analyzed with respect to the occurrence of time-reversal invariant vector and bidirector order parameters. The possibility of discerning the orientational domain states of the low-symmetry phase by these `vectorlike' physical properties has been derived using a computer algorithm exploiting the concept of polar, axial, chiral and neutral dipoles. It is argued that for species 32 > 3, 422 > 4 and 622 > 6, Bogdanov-Yablonskii phenomenological theory for a ferromagnetic Bloch Skyrmions applies also to the ferroel…
We introduce $\mathbb Z_2$-valued bulk invariants for symmetry-protected topological phases in $2+1$ dimensional driven quantum systems. These invariants adapt the $W_3$-invariant, expressed as a sum over degeneracy points of the propagator, to the respective symmetry class of the Floquet-Bloch Hamiltonian. The bulk-boundary correspondence that holds for each invariant relates a non-zero value of the bulk invariant to the existence of symmetry-protected topological boundary states. To demonstrate this correspondence we apply our invariants to a chiral Harper, time-reversal Kane-Mele, and parti…
Magnetic singularities, also known as magnetic monopoles or Bloch points, represent intriguingphenomena in nanomagnetism. We show that a pair of coupled Bloch points may appear as alocalized, stable state in cubic chiral magnets. Detailed analysis is presented of the stability of suchobjects in the interior of crystals and in geometrically confined systems.
Skyrmionic textures are being extensively investigated due to the occurrence of novel topological magnetic phenomena and their promising applications in a new generation of spintronic devices that take advantage of the robust topological stability of their spin structures. The development of practical devices relies on a detailed understanding of how skyrmionic structures can be formed, transferred, detected and annihilated. In this work, our considerations go beyond static skyrmions and theoretically show that the formation/annihilation of both skyrmions and antiskyrmions is enabled by the tr…
Rectification is a process that converts electromagnetic fields into a direct current. Such a process underlies a wide range of technologies such as wireless communication, wireless charging, energy harvesting, and infrared detection. Existing rectifiers are mostly based on semiconductor diodes, with limited applicability to small voltage or high frequency inputs. Here, we present an alternative approach to current rectification that uses the intrinsic electronic properties of quantum crystals without using semiconductor junctions. We identify a previously unknown mechanism for rectification f…
Bloch oscillations are exotic phenomena describing the periodic motion of a wave packet subjected to the external force in a lattice, where the system possessing single- or multipleparticles could exhibit distinct oscillation behaviors. In particular, it has been pointed out that quantum statistics could dramatically affected the Bloch oscillation even in the absence of particle interactions, where the oscillation frequency of two pseudofermions with the anyonic statistical angle being pi becomes half of that for two bosons. However, these statisticdependent Bloch oscillations have never been …
The relation between chiral edge modes and bulk Chern numbers of quantum Hall insulators is a paradigmatic example of bulk-boundary correspondence. We show that the chiral edge modes are not strictly tied to the Chern numbers defined by a non-Hermitian Bloch Hamiltonian. This breakdown of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence stems from the non-Bloch-wave behavior of eigenstates (non-Hermitian skin effect), which generates pronounced deviations of phase diagrams from the Bloch theory. We introduce non-Bloch Chern numbers that faithfully predict the numbers of chiral edge modes. The theory …
Theoretical investigation demonstrates that the composite bilayer (i.e., chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) offers the possibility of electric-induced magnetic Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 014311 (2016)]. In this Article, we propose a micromagnetic model to physically manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions propagating in a chiral-magnetic thin film with a polarized ferroelectric essential to drive the system through the converse magnetoelectric effect. Effects caused by different velocities of the propagation, sizes of the thin film, and strength of the magnetoelectric couplings stron…
We present a general quantum kinetic theory of low-field magnetotransport in weakly disordered crystals that accounts fully for the interplay between electric-field induced interband coherence, Bloch-state scattering, and an external magnetic field. The quantum kinetic equation we derive for the Bloch-state density matrix naturally incorporates the momentum-space Berry phase effects whose influence on Bloch-state wavepacket dynamics is normally incorporated into transport theory in an ad hoc manner. The Berry phase correction to the momentum-space density of states in the presence of an extern…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides feature tightly bound bright excitons at the degenerate valleys, where electron-hole Coulomb exchange interaction strongly couples the valley pseudospin to the momentum of exciton. Placed on periodically structured dielectric substrate, the spatial modulation of the Coulomb interaction leads to the formation of exciton Bloch states with real-space valley pseudospin texture displayed in a mesoscopic supercell. We find this spatial valley texture in the exciton Bloch function is pattern-locked to the propagation direction, enabling nano-optical excitati…
While chiral magnetic skyrmions have been attracting significant attention in the past years, recently, a new type of a chiral particle emerging in thin films $-$ a chiral bobber $-$ has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. Here, based on theoretical arguments, we provide a clear pathway to utilizing chiral bobbers for the purposes of future spintronics by uncovering that these novel chiral states possess inherent transport fingerprints that allow for their unambiguous electrical detection in systems comprising several types of chiral states. We reveal that unique transpor…
Non-Bloch topological invariants preserve the bulk-boundary correspondence in non-Hermitian topological systems, and are a key concept in the contemporary study of non-Hermitian topology. Here we report the dynamic detection of non-Bloch topological invariants in single-photon quantum walks, revealed through the biorthogonal chiral displacement, and crosschecked with the dynamic spin textures in the generalized quasimomentum-time domain following a quantum quench. Both detection schemes are robust against symmetry-preserving disorders, and yield consistent results with theoretical predictions.…

We study the phenomenon of wave packet revivals of Bloch electrons and explore how to control them by a magnetic field for quantum information transfer. It is showed that the single electron system can be modulated into a linear dispersion regime by the "quantized" flux and then an electronic wave packet with the components localized in this regime can be transferred without spreading. This feature can be utilized to perform the high-fidelity transfer of quantum information encoded in the polarization of the spin. Beyond the linear approximation, the re-localization and self-interference occur…
It has been shown that coherent phonons can be used as a potent tool for controlling and enhancing optoelectronic and transport properties of nanostructured materials. Recent studies revealed that interaction of acoustic phonons and fast-moving carriers in semiconductor heterostructures can be accompanied by electron-phonon instabilities that cause ordinary and induced Cherenkov effects. However, the development of such instabilities is still poorly understood. Our study shows that other supersonic phenomena, beyond the Cherenkov instability, are possible for non-equilibrium charge transport i…
We analyze the Chiral Magnetic Effect for non-Hermitian fermionic systems using the biorthogonal formulation of quantum mechanics. In contrast to the Hermitian chiral counterparts, we show that the Chiral Magnetic Effect may take place in thermal equilibrium of an open non-Hermitian system with, generally, massive fermions. The key observation is that for non-Hermitian charged systems, there is no strict charge conservation as understood in the Hermitian case, so the Bloch theorem preventing currents in the thermodynamic limit in equilibrium does not apply.
We present a theory of magnetotransport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric and the sound absorption coefficients exhibit strong and anisotropic magnetic field dependences. We also discuss properties of magneto-plasmons and magneto-polaritons, whose existence is entirely determined by the chiral anomaly. Finally, we discuss the conditions of applicability of the quasi-classical description of electron transport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly.

The dynamics in a nonlinear Schrodinger chain in an homogeneous electric field is studied. We show that discrete translational invariant integrability-breaking terms can freeze the Bloch nonlinear oscillations and introduce new faster frequencies in their dynamics. These phenomena are studied by direct numerical integration and through an adiabatic approximation. The adiabatic approximation allows a description in terms of an effective potential that greatly clarifies the phenomenon.
A cavity quantum electrodynamical (QED) system beyond the strong-coupling regime is expected to exhibit intriguing quantum phenomena. Here we report a direct measurement of the photon-dressed qubit transition frequencies up to four photons by harnessing the same type of state transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system realized by inductively coupling a superconducting flux qubit to a coplanar-waveguide resonator. This demonstrates a convincing observation of the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift in the ultrastrongly coupled quantum system. Moreover, our results show that the p…
We present a semiclassical theory of linear and nonlinear optical response of graphene. The emphasis is placed on the nonlinear optical response of graphene from the standpoint of the underlying chiral symmetry. The Bloch quasiparticles in low energy limit, around the degeneracy points are dominantly chiral. It is shown for the first time that this chiral behavior in conjunction with scale invariance in graphene around the Dirac points results in the strong nonlinear optical response. Explicit expressions for the linear and nonlinear conductivity tensors are derived based on Semiconductor Bloc…
Quantum walks are processes that model dynamics in coherent systems. Their experimental implementations proved key to unveil novel phenomena in Floquet topological insulators. Here we realize a photonic quantum walk in the presence of a synthetic gauge field, which mimics the action of an electric field on a charged particle. By tuning the energy gaps between the two quasi-energy bands, we investigate intriguing system dynamics characterized by the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions. When both gaps at quasi-energy values 0 and $π$ are vanishingly small, the Floqu…
We study the nonlinear responses of relativistic chiral matter to the external fields, such as the electric field ${\bf E}$, gradients of temperature and chemical potential, ${\bf \nabla} T$ and ${\bf \nabla} μ$. Using the kinetic theory with Berry curvature corrections under the relaxation time approximation, we compute the transport coefficients of possible new electric currents that are forbidden in usual chirally symmetric matter, but are allowed in chirally asymmetric matter by parity. In particular, we find a new type of electric current proportional to ${\bf \nabla} μ\times {\bf E}$ due…
We investigate a mechanical method to manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions by applying an electric field in a composite chiral-magnetic (CM)/ferroelectric (FE) bilayer. The magnetoelectric coupling at the interface allows the electric field to stimulate magnetic ordering. Therefore it offers the possibility to generate Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B 94, 014311 (2016)]. Here, we design a movable and localized electric field source to drive skyrmion transport along the bilayer. A traveling velocity of the electric field source must be carefully chosen to show the stability and effciency of this process.…
By using the exact solutions of the Weyl equation in a constant magnetic field, the equal-time Wigner function for magnetized chiral plasma is derived. It is found that the dependence of the Wigner function on the component of momentum along the magnetic field is asymmetric and is correlated with the fermion chirality. Such a dependence is principal for reproducing the correct chiral magnetic and chiral separation effects. In the lowest Landau level approximation, the equation for the equal-time Wigner function in a strong magnetic field is derived. By making use of this equation, it is found …
Chiral superconductors are a novel class of unconventional superconductors that host topologically protected chiral Majorana fermions at interfaces and domain walls, elusive quasiparticles that could serve as a platform for topological quantum computing. Here we show that, in analogy to a qubit, the out-of-equilibrium superconducting state in such materials can be described by a Bloch vector and controlled on ultrafast time scales. The all-optical control mechanism is universal, permitting arbitrary rotations of the order parameter, and can induce a dynamical change of handedness of the conden…
Topological materials are fertile ground for investigating topological phases of matter and topological phase transitions. In particular, the quest for novel topological phases in 2D materials is attracting fast growing attention. Here, using Floquet-Bloch theory, we propose to realize chiral topological phases in 2D hexagonal FeX2 (X=Cl, Br, I) monolayers under irradiation of circularly polarized light. Such 2D FeX2 monolayers are predicted to be dynamical stable, and exhibit both ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties. To capture the full topological physics of the magnetic semiconducto…
Periodical equilibrium states of magnetization exist in chiral ferromagnetic films, if the constant of antisymmetric exchange (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction) exceeds some critical value. Here, we demonstrate that this critical value can be significantly modified in curved film. The competition between symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions in a curved film can lead to a new type of domain wall which is inclined with respect to the cylinder axis. The wall structure is intermediate between Bloch and Néel ones. The exact analytical solutions for phase boundary curves and the new do…
We investigate the dynamics of Bloch electrons using a density operator method and connect this approach with previous theories based on wave packets. We study non-interacting systems with negligible disorder and strong spin-orbit interactions, which have been at the forefront of recent research on spin-related phenomena. We demonstrate that the requirement of gauge invariance results in a shift in the position at which the Wigner function of Bloch electrons is evaluated. The present formalism also yields the correction to the carrier velocity arising from the Berry phase. The gauge-dependent …
A theoretical investigation of quantum-transport phenomena in mesoscopic systems is presented. In particular, a generalization to ``open systems'' of the well-known semiconductor Bloch equations is proposed. The presence of spatial boundary conditions manifest itself through self-energy corrections and additional source terms in the kinetic equations, whose form is suitable for a solution via a generalized Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed approach is applied to the study of quantum-transport phenomena in double-barrier structures as well as in superlattices, showing a strong interplay betw…
Application of Wigner-Weyl calculus to the investigation of non-dissipative transport phenomena is reviewed. We focus on the quantum Hall effect, Chiral Magnetic effect, and Chiral separation effect, and discuss the role of interactions, inhomogeneity, and deviations from equilibrium.
We present a low-energy effective-mass theory to describe chiral orbital current and anomalous magnetic moment in graphenes with band gap and related materials. We show that a Bloch electron generally contains an anomalous current density due to inter-band matrix elements, which describes a chiral current circulation associated with magnetic moment. In gapped graphenes, the chiral current is opposite between different valleys, and corresponding magnetic moment accounts for valley splitting of Landau levels. In gapped bilayer graphene, in particular, the valley-dependent magnetic moment is resp…
Ultrafast charge transport in strongly biased semiconductors is at the heart of highspeed electronics, electro-optics, and fundamental solid-state physics. Intense light pulses in the terahertz (THz) spectral range have opened fascinating vistas: Since THz photon energies are far below typical electronic interband resonances, a stable electromagnetic waveform may serve as a precisely adjustable bias. Novel quantum phenomena have been anticipated for THz amplitudes reaching atomic field strengths. We exploit controlled THz waveforms with peak fields of 72 MV/cm to drive coherent interband polar…
