Semiconductor quantum dots are a promising system to build a solid state quantum network. A critical step in this area is to build an efficient interface between a stationary quantum bit and a flying one. In this chapter, we show how cavity quantum electrodynamics allows us to efficiently interface a single quantum dot with a propagating electromagnetic field. Beyond the well known Purcell factor, we discuss the various parameters that need to be optimized to build such an interface. We then review our recent progresses in terms of fabrication of bright sources of indistinguishable single photons, where a record brightness of 79% is obtained as well as a high degree of indistinguishability of the emitted photons. Symmetrically, optical nonlinearities at the very few photon level are demonstrated, by sending few photon pulses at a quantum dot-cavity device operating in the strong coupling regime. Perspectives and future challenges are briefly discussed.
The energies of valley-orbit states in silicon quantum dots are determined by an as yet poorly understood interplay between interface roughness, orbital confinement, and electron interactions. Here, we report measurements of one- and two-electron valley-orbit state energies as the dot potential is modified by changing gate voltages, and we calculate these same energies using full configuration interaction calculations. The results enable an understanding of the interplay between the physical contributions and enable a new probe of the quantum well interface.
Charged quantum dots containing an electron or hole spin are bright solid-state qubits suitable for quantum networks and distributed quantum computing. Incorporating such quantum dot spin into a photonic crystal cavity creates a strong spin-photon interface, in which the spin can control a photon by modulating the cavity reflection coefficient. However, previous demonstrations of such spin-photon interfaces have relied on quantum dots that are charged randomly by nearby impurities, leading to instability in the charge state, which causes poor contrast in the cavity reflectivity. Here we demons…
The coherent coupling of flying photonic qubits to stationary matter-based qubits is an essential building block for quantum communication networks. We show how such a quantum interface can be realized between a traveling-wave optical field and the polarized nuclear spins in a singly charged quantum dot strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. By adiabatically eliminating the electron a direct effective coupling is achieved. Depending on the laser field applied, interactions that enable either write-in or read-out are obtained.
We propose methods for realization of continuous two photon source using coherently pumped quantum dot embedded inside a photonic crystal cavity. We analyze steady state population in quantum dot energy levels and field inside the cavity mode. We find conditions for population inversion in coherently pumped and incoherently pumped quantum dot. We show that squeezing in the output for two two photon laser is not visible using coherent as well as incoherent pump. We discuss effect of phonon coupling using recently developed polaron transformed master equation at low temperatures. We also propose…
We experimentally investigate the fluorescence photon emission characteristics for single q-dots by using optical nanofibers. We demonstrate that single q-dots can be deposited along an optical nanofiber systematically and reproducibly with a precision of 5 μm. For single q-dots on an optical nanofiber, we measure the fluorescence photon numbers coupled into the nanofiber and the normalized photon correlations, by varying the excitation laser intensity. We estimate the fluorescence photon coupling efficiency into the nanofiber guided modes to be higher than 9.4\pm3%.
Control of single photon wave-packets is an important resource for developing hybrid quantum systems which are composed of different physical systems interacting via photons. Here we extend this control to triggered photons emitted by a quantum dot, temporally shaping single photon wave-packets on timescales fast compared to their radiative decay by electro-optic modulation. In particular, telecommunications-band single photons resulting from the recombination of an exciton in a quantum dot with exponentially decaying wave-packets are synchronously modulated to create Gaussian-shaped single ph…
We perform extended numerical studies to maximize the overall photon coupling efficiency of fiber-coupled quantum dot single-photon sources emitting in the near-infrared and telecom regime. Using the finite element method, we optimize the photon extraction and fiber-coupling efficiency of quantum dot single-photon sources based on micromesas, microlenses, circular Bragg grating cavities and micropillars. The numerical simulations which consider the entire system consisting of the quantum dot source itself, the coupling lens, and the single-mode fiber yield overall photon coupling efficiencies …
Valley-orbit coupling is a key parameter for a silicon quantum dot in determining its suitability for applications in quantum information processing. In this paper we study the effect of interface steps on the magnitude and phase of valley-orbit coupling for an electron in a silicon quantum dot. Within the effective mass approximation, we find that the location of a step on the interface is important in determining both the magnitude and the phase of the valley-orbit coupling in a Si/SiGe quantum dot. Specifically, our numerical results show that the magnitude of valley orbit coupling can be s…
We theoretically investigate the efficiency of an entanglement swapping procedure based on the use of quantum dots as sources of entangled photon pairs. The four-photon interference that affects such efficiency is potentially limited by the fine-structure splitting and by the time correlation between cascaded photons, which provide which-path information. The effect of spectral inhomogeneity is also considered, and a possible quantum eraser experiment is discussed for the case of identical dots.
Using background-free detection of spin-state-dependent resonance fluorescence from a single-electron charged quantum dot with an efficiency of 0:1%, we realize a single spin-photon interface where the detection of a scattered photon with 300 picosecond time resolution projects the quantum dot spin to a definite spin eigenstate with fidelity exceeding 99%. The bunching of resonantly scattered photons reveals information about electron spin dynamics. High-fidelity fast spin-state initialization heralded by a single photon enables the realization of quantum information processing tasks such as n…
We demonstrate the effects of cavity quantum electrodynamics for a quantum dot coupled to a photonic molecule, consisting of a pair of coupled photonic crystal cavities. We show anti-crossing between the quantum dot and the two super-modes of the photonic molecule, signifying achievement of the strong coupling regime. From the anti-crossing data, we estimate the contributions of both mode-coupling and intrinsic detuning to the total detuning between the super-modes. Finally, we also show signatures of off-resonant cavity-cavity interaction in the photonic molecule.
We propose to pump semiconductor quantum dots with surface acoustic waves which deliver an alternating periodic sequence of electrons and holes. In combination with a good optical cavity such regular pumping could entail anti-bunching and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. In the bad-cavity limit a train of equally spaced photons would arise.
The spontaneous emission rate of a quantum dot coupled to a structured photonic reservoir is determined by the frequency dependence of its local density of photon states. Through phonon-dressing, a breakdown of Fermi's golden rule can occur for certain photonic structures whose photon decay time become comparable to the longitudinal acoustic phonon decay times. We present a polaron master equation model to calculate the photoluminescence intensity from a coherently excited quantum dot coupled to a structured photonic reservoir. We consider examples of a semiconductor microcavity and a coupled …
Photon correlations in the emission of a resonantly driven quantum dot are investigated, accounting for the influence of the solid-state phonon environment. An analytical expression is derived for the second-order fluorescence intensity correlation function, from which regimes of correlated and uncorrelated photon emission are predicted as the driving field is varied. Experiments to investigate this effect would provide valuable insight into quantum dot carrier-phonon dynamics and are feasible with current technology.
We show that with a new family of pyramidal site-controlled InGaAsN quantum dots it is possible to obtain areas containing as much as 15% of polarization-entangled photon emitters - a major improvement if compared to the small fraction achievable by other quantum dot systems. Entanglement is attested by a two-photon polarization state density matrix and the parameters obtained from it. Emitters showing fidelities up to 0.721+-0.043 were found.
We investigate theoretically two-photon processes in a microcavity containing one quantum dot in the strong coupling regime. The cavity mode can be tuned to resonantly drive the two-photon transition between the ground and the biexciton states, while the exciton states are far-off resonance due to the biexciton binding energy. We study the steady state of the quantum dot and cavity field in presence of a continuous incoherent pumping. We identify the regime where the system acts as two-photon emitter and discuss the feasibility and performance of realistic single quantum dot devices for two-ph…
The shot-noise spectrum of a quantum dot p-i-n junction embedded inside a three-dimensional photonic crystal is investigated. Radiative decay properties of quantum dot excitons can be obtained from the observation of the current noise. The characteristic of the photonic band gap is revealed in the current noise with discontinuous behavior. Applications of such a device in entanglement generation and emission of single photons are pointed out, and may be achieved with current technologies.
Polarization correlation in a linear basis, but not entanglement, is observed between the biexciton and single-exciton photons emitted by a single InAs quantum dot in a two-photon cascade. The results are well described quantitatively by a probabilistic model that includes two decay paths for a biexciton through a non-degenerate pair of one-exciton states, with the polarization of the emitted photons depending on the decay path. The results show that spin non-degeneracy due to quantum-dot asymmetry is a significant obstacle to the realization of an entangled-photon generation device.
We demonstrate a new method for generating triggered single photons. After a laser pulse generates excitons inside of a single quantum dot, electrostatic interactions between them and the resulting spectral shifts allow a single emitted photon to be isolated. Autocorrelation measurements show a reduction of the two-photon probability to 0.12 times the value for Poisson light. Strong anti-bunching persists when the emission is saturated. The emitted photons are also polarized.
In this note we present some results concerning photon blockade and antibunching in a system consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. We give analytic conditions for resonant and non-resonant photon blockade, valid for small values of the external pump amplitude. Starting from these results, we discuss the quantum states characteristics of the system within a master equation formalism and highlight quantities like stationary second order correlations both static and dynamic and one-photon purity.
We present a first measurement of photon polarization entanglement from the biexciton to ground state cascade of a single InAsP quantum dot embedded in an InP nanowire. We observe a fidelity of 0.76(2) to a reference maximally entangled state as well as a concurrence of 0.57(6).
We perform photon-assisted-tunneling (PAT) experiments on a GaAs double quantum dot device under high microwave excitation power. Photon-assisted absorption of up to 14 photons is observed, when electron temperature (>1K) are far above the lattice temperature. Signatures of Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) interference are found even in this non-equilibrium PAT spectrum. In addition, the charge state relaxation time T_1~8ns measured in this out of thermal equilibrium double quantum dot is in agreement with other previous reports.
Models of the spontaneous emission of photons coupled to the electronic states of quantum dots are important for understanding quantum interactions in dielectric media as applied to proposed solid-state quantum computers, single photon emitters, and single photon detectors. The characteristic lifetime of photon emission is traditionally modeled in the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation. Here we model the fully quantized spontaneous emission, including near field effects, of a photon from the excited state of a quantum dot beyond theWeisskopf-Wigner approximation. We propose the use of discretized …
A semiconductor quantum dot can generate highly coherent and indistinguishable single photons. However, intrinsic semiconductor dephasing mechanisms can reduce the visibility of two-photon interference. For an electron in a quantum dot, a fundamental dephasing process is the hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spin bath. Here we directly probe the consequence of the fluctuating nuclear spins on the elastic and inelastic scattered photon spectra from a resident electron in a single dot. We find the nuclear spin fluctuations lead to detuned Raman scattered photons which are distinguishable fr…
Spontaneous two photon emission from a solid-state single quantum emitter is observed. We investigated photoluminescence from the neutral biexciton in a single semiconductor quantum dot coupled with a high Q photonic crystal nanocavity. When the cavity is resonant to the half energy of the biexciton, the strong vacuum field in the cavity inspires the biexciton to simultaneously emit two photons into the mode, resulting in clear emission enhancement of the mode. Meanwhile, suppression was observed of other single photon emission from the biexciton, as the two photon emission process becomes fas…
Most optical quantum devices require deterministic single-photon emitters. Schemes so far demonstrated in the solid state imply an energy relaxation which tends to spoil the coherent nature of the time evolution, and with it the photon indistinguishability. We focus our theoretical investigation on semiconductor quantum dots embedded in microcavities. Simple and general relations are identified between the photon indistinguishability and the collection efficiency. The identification of the key parameters and of their interplay provides clear indications for the device optimization.
Photonic quantum technologies call for scalable quantum light sources that can be integrated, while providing the end user with single and entangled photons on-demand. One promising candidate are strain free GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots obtained by droplet etching. Such quantum dots exhibit ultra low multi-photon probability and an unprecedented degree of photon pair entanglement. However, different to commonly studied InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots obtained by the Stranski-Krastanow mode, photons with a near-unity indistinguishability from these quantum emitters have proven to be elusive so far. Here, …
We propose a scheme to realize a highly efficient solid state source of photon pairs using cavity-assisted stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in a single quantum dot, where a single photon from pump pulse and two stokes photons from cavity mode drives the Raman transition. The Autler-Townes doublet, generated by using a resonant continuous wave laser between biexciton and exciton states, and two-photon-resonant transition through strongly coupled cavity mode are utilized to facilitate (1+2)type Raman transition in the quantum dot. We show in the case of weak pump although the probabil…
Quantum dots are both excellent single-photon sources and hosts for single spins. This combination enables the deterministic generation of Raman-photons -- bandwidth-matched to an atomic quantum-memory -- and the generation of photon cluster states, a resource in quantum communication and measurement-based quantum computing. GaAs quantum dots in AlGaAs can be matched in frequency to a rubidium-based photon memory, and have potentially improved electron spin coherence compared to the widely used InGaAs quantum dots. However, their charge stability and optical linewidths are typically much worse…
An ideal source of entangled photon pairs combines the perfect symmetry of an atom with the convenient electrical trigger of light sources based on semiconductor quantum dots. We create a naturally symmetric quantum dot cascade that emits highly entangled photon pairs on demand. Our source consists of strain-free GaAs dots self-assembled on a triangular symmetric (111)A surface. The emitted photons strongly violate Bell's inequality and reveal a fidelity to the Bell state as high as 86 (+-2) % without postselection. This result is an important step towards scalable quantum-communication applic…
Photonic quantum technology provides a viable route to quantum communication, quantum simulation, and quantum information processing. Recent progress has seen the realisation of boson sampling using 20 single-photons and quantum key distribution over hundreds of kilometres. Scaling the complexity requires architectures containing multiple photon-sources, photon-counters, and a large number of indistinguishable single photons. Semiconductor quantum dots are bright and fast sources of coherent single-photons. For applications, a significant roadblock is the poor quantum coherence upon interferin…
The observation of quantum dot resonance fluorescence enabled a new solid-state approach to generating single photons with a bandwidth almost as narrow as the natural linewidth of a quantum dot transition. Here, we operate in the Heitler regime of resonance fluorescence to generate sub-natural linewidth and high-coherence quantum light from a single quantum dot. The measured single-photon bandwidth exhibits a 30-fold reduction with respect to the radiative linewidth of the QD transition and the single photons exhibit coherence properties inherited from the excitation laser. In contrast, intens…
We describe a mechanism for the production of polarisation-entangled microwaves using intra-band transitions in a pair of quantum dots. This proposal relies neither on spin-orbit coupling nor on control over electron-electron interactions. The quantum correlation of microwave polarisations is obtained from orbital degrees of freedom in an external magnetic field. We calculate the concurrence of emitted microwave photon pairs, and show that a maximally entangled Bell pair is obtained in the limit of weak inter-dot coupling.
We present a theoretical analysis of the intensity autocorrelation for the spontaneous emission from a planar ensemble of self-assembled quantum dots. Using the quantum jump approach, we numerically simulate the evolution of the system and construct photon-photon delay time statistics that approximates the second order correlation function of the field. The form of this correlation function in the case of collective emission from a highly homogeneous ensemble qualitatively differs form that characterizing an ensemble of independent emitters (inhomogeneous ensemble of uncoupled dots). The signa…
We analyze the impact of both an incoherent and a coherent continuous excitation on our proposal to generate a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity [New J. Phys. 13, 113014 (2011)]. A comparison between exact numerical results and analytical formulas provides the conditions to efficiently generate indistinguishable and simultaneous pairs of photons under both types of excitation.
We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of t…
Entangled photon sources are crucial for quantum optics, quantum sensing and quantum communication. Semiconductor quantum dots generate on-demand entangled photon pairs via the biexciton-exciton cascade. However, the pair of photons are emitted isotropically in all directions, thus limiting the collection efficiency to a fraction of a percent. Moreover, strain and structural asymmetry in quantum dots lift the degeneracy of the intermediate exciton states in the cascade, thus degrading the measured entanglement fidelity. Here, we propose an approach for generating a pair of entangled photons fr…
We show that the two-photon transition rates of quantum dots coupled to nanocavities are enhanced by up to 8 orders of magnitude relative to quantum dots in bulk host. We then propose how to take advantage of this enhancement to implement coherent quantum dot excitation by two-photon absorption, entangled photon pair generation by two-photon spontaneous emission, and single-photon generation at telecommunication wavelengths by two-photon stimulated and spontaneous emission.
Colloidal quantum dots have garnered active research interest as quantum emitters due to their robust synthesis process and straightforward integration with nanophotonic platforms. However, obtaining indistinguishable photons from the colloidal quantum dots at room temperature is fundamentally challenging because they suffer from an extremely large dephasing rate. Here we propose an experimentally feasible method of obtaining indistinguishable single photons from an incoherently pumped solution-processed colloidal quantum dot coupled to a system of nanocavities. We show that by coupling a coll…
This chapter will primarily focus on the studies of quantum optics with semiconductor, epitaxially grown quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal cavities. We will start by giving brief introductions into photonic crystals and quantum dots, then proceed with the introduction to cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects, with a particular emphasis on the demonstration of these effects on the quantum dot-photonic crystal platform. Finally, we will focus on the applications of such cavity QED effects.
In this letter, we present a detailed, all optical study of the influence of different excitation schemes on the indistinguishability of single photons from a single InAs quantum dot. For this study, we measure the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of consecutive photons from the spontaneous emission of an InAs quantum dot state under various excitation schemes and different excitation conditions and give a comparison.
We present measurements of the second-order coherence function on emission from single GaN quantum dots. In some cases a large degree of photon antibunching is observed, demonstrating isolation of a single quantum system. For a selected quantum dot, we study the dependence of photon antibunching on excitation power and temperature. Using pulsed excitation, we demonstrate an ultraviolet triggered single-photon source operating at a wavelength of 358 nm.
We present a new scheme for quantum interfaces to accomplish the interconversion of photonic qubits and spin qubits based on optomechanical resonators and the spin-orbit-induced interactions in suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots. This interface implements quantum spin transducers and further enables electrical manipulation of local electron spin qubits, which lays the foundation for all-electrical control of state transfer protocols between two distant quantum nodes in a quantum network. We numerically evaluate the state transfer processes and proceed to estimate the effect of each couplin…
Single photon emission was observed from site-controlled InGaN/GaN quantum dots. The single-photon nature of the emission was verified by the second-order correlation function up to 90 K, the highest temperature to date for site-controlled quantum dots. Micro-photoluminescence study on individual quantum dots showed linearly polarized single exciton emission with a lifetime of a few nanoseconds. The dimensions of these quantum dots were well controlled to the precision of state-of-the-art fabrication technologies, as reflected in the uniformity of their optical properties. The yield of optical…
Semiconductor quantum-dot cavity systems are promising sources for solid-state based on-demand generation of single photons for quantum communication. Commonly, the spectral characteristics of the emitted single photon are fixed by system properties such as electronic transition energies and spectral properties of the cavity. In the present work we study single-photon generation from the quantum-dot biexciton through a partly stimulated non-degenerate two-photon emission. We show that frequency and linewidth of the single photon can be fully controlled by the stimulating laser pulse, ultimatel…
Indistinguishable single photons are necessary for quantum information processing applications. Resonant or quasiresonant excitation of single quantum dots provides greater single photon indistinguishability than incoherent pumping, but is also more challenging experimentally. Here, we demonstrate high signal to noise quasiresonant excitation of InP/InGaP quantum dots. The excitation is provided via second harmonic generated from a telecommunications wavelength laser resonant with the fundamental mode of a photonic crystal cavity, fabricated at twice the quantum dot transition wavelength. The …
Efficient, high rate photon sources with high single photon purity are essential ingredients for quantum technologies. Single photon sources based on solid state emitters such as quantum dots are very advantageous for integrated photonic circuits, but they can suffer from a high two-photon emission probability, which in cases of non-cryogenic environment cannot be spectrally filtered. Here we propose two temporal purification-by-heralding methods for using a two photon emission process to yield highly pure and efficient single photon emission, bypassing the inherent problem of spectrally overl…
We demonstrate off-resonant coupling between a single quantum dot and a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot or the cavity. These results are consistent with previous descriptions of off-resonant coupling as an incoherent phonon-mediated process. The extension of this phenomenon to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity presents interesting possibilities for coherent control of this interaction by tailoring the phonon density of states.
We demonstrate a single-photon collection efficiency of $(44.3\pm2.1)\%$ from a quantum dot in a low-Q mode of a photonic-crystal cavity with a single-photon purity of $g^{(2)}(0)=(4\pm5)\%$ recorded above the saturation power. The high efficiency is directly confirmed by detecting up to $962\pm46$ kilocounts per second on a single-photon detector on another quantum dot coupled to the cavity mode. The high collection efficiency is found to be broadband, as is explained by detailed numerical simulations. Cavity-enhanced efficient excitation of quantum dots is obtained through phonon-mediated ex…
We demonstrate reversible strain-tuning of a quantum dot strongly coupled to a photonic crystal cavity. We observe an average redshift of 0.45 nm for quantum dots located inside the cavity membrane, achieved with an electric field of 15 kV/cm applied to a piezo-electric actuator. Using this technique, we demonstrate the ability to tune a quantum dot into resonance with a photonic crystal cavity in the strong coupling regime, resulting in a clear anti-crossing. The bare cavity resonance is less sensitive to strain than the quantum dot and shifts by only 0.078 nm at the maximum applied electric …
We predict dominating cooperative two-photon emission from two quantum dots coupled with a single mode photonic crystal cavity. The cooperative two photon emission occurs when excitons in two off-resonantly coupled quantum dots decay simultaneously. The interaction with common cavity field leads to cavity induced two-photon emission which is strongly inhibited by electron phonon coupling. The interaction with common phonon bath produces phonon induced two-photon emission which increases on increasing temperature. For identical quantum dots cavity induced two-photon emission is negligible but p…
Nuclear spin polarization dynamics are measured in optically pumped individual GaAs/AlGaAs interface quantum dots by detecting the time-dependence of the Overhauser shift in photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Long nuclear polarization decay times of ~ 1 minute have been found indicating inefficient nuclear spin diffusion from the GaAs dot into the surrounding AlGaAs matrix in externally applied magnetic field. A spin diffusion coefficient two orders lower than that previously found in bulk GaAs is deduced.
In this paper, we investigate, phonon effects on the optical properties of a spherical quantum dot. For this purpose, we consider the interaction of a spherical quantum dot with classical and quantum fields while the exciton of quantum dot interacts with a solid state reservoir. We show that phonons strongly affect the Rabi oscillations and optical coherence on first picoseconds of dynamics. We consider the quantum statistics of emitted photons by quantum dot and we show that these photons are anti-bunched and obey the sub-Poissonian statistics. In addition, we examine the effects of detuning …
Quantum dots in cavities have been shown to be very bright sources of indistinguishable single photons. Yet the quantum interference between two bright quantum dot sources, a critical step for photon based quantum computation, has never been investigated. Here we report on such a measurement, taking advantage of a deterministic fabrication of the devices. We show that cavity quantum electrodynamics can efficiently improve the quantum interference between remote quantum dot sources: poorly indistinguishable photons can still interfere with good contrast with high quality photons emitted by a so…
Single epitaxially-grown semiconductor quantum dots have great potential as single photon sources for photonic quantum technologies, though in practice devices often exhibit non-ideal behavior. Here, we demonstrate that amplitude modulation can improve the performance of quantum-dot-based sources. Starting with a bright source consisting of a single quantum dot in a fiber-coupled microdisk cavity, we use synchronized amplitude modulation to temporally filter the emitted light. We observe that the single photon purity, temporal overlap between successive emission events, and indistinguishabilit…
Interfacing single emitters and photonic nanostructures enables modifying their emission properties, such as enhancing individual decay rates or controlling the emission direction. To achieve full control, the single emitter must be positioned in the nanostructures deterministically. Here, we use spectroscopy to gain spectral and spatial information about individual quantum dots in order to position each emitter in a pre-determined location in a unit cell of a photonic-crystal waveguide. Depending on the spatial and spectral positioning within the structured nanophotonic mode, we observe that …
We demonstrate background-free quantum frequency conversion of single photons from an epitaxially-grown InAs quantum dot. Single photons at \approx 980 nm are combined with a pump laser near 1550 nm inside a periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, generating single photons at \approx 600 nm. The large red-detuning between the pump and signal wavelengths ensures nearly background-free conversion, avoiding processes such as upconversion of anti-Stokes Raman scattered pump photons in the PPLN crystal. Second-order correlation measurements on the single photon stream are performed bot…
Cavities embedded in photonic crystal waveguides offer a promising route towards large scale integration of coupled resonators for quantum electrodynamics applications. In this letter, we demonstrate a strongly coupled system formed by a single quantum dot and such a photonic crystal cavity. The resonance originating from the cavity is clearly identified from the photoluminescence mapping of the out-of-plane scattered signal along the photonic crystal waveguide. The quantum dot exciton is tuned towards the cavity mode by temperature control. A vacuum Rabi splitting of ~ 140 \mueV is observed a…
