We have conducted an optical long-slit spectroscopic survey of 1022 galaxies using the 10m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) at McDonald Observatory. The main goal of the HET Massive Galaxy Survey (HETMGS) is to find nearby galaxies that are suitable for black hole mass measurements. In order to measure accurately the black hole mass, one should kinematically resolve the region where the black hole dominates the gravitational potential. For most galaxies, this region is much less than an arcsecond. Thus, black hole masses are best measured in nearby galaxies with telescopes that obtain high-spatial resolution. The HETMGS focuses on those galaxies predicted to have the largest sphere-of-influence, based on published stellar velocity dispersions or the galaxy fundamental plane. To ensure coverage over galaxy types, the survey targets those galaxies across a face-on projection of the fundamental plane. We present the sample selection and resulting data products from the long-slit observations, including central stellar kinematics and emission line ratios. The full dataset, including spectra and resolved kinematics, is available online. Additionally, we show that the current crop of black hole masses are highly biased towards dense galaxies and that especially large disks and low dispersion galaxies are under-represented. This survey provides the necessary groundwork for future systematic black hole mass measurement campaigns.
We report an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) with extremely high equivalent width (EW), EW(LyA+NV,rest)>921 AA in the rest-frame, at z~2.24 in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) as a representative case of the high EW AGN population. The continuum level is a non-detection in the HETDEX spectrum, thus the measured EW is a lower limit. The source is detected with significant emission lines (>7sigma) at LyA+NV, CIV, and moderate emission line (~4sigma) at HeII within the wavelength coverage of HETDEX (3500 AA - 5500 AA). The r-band magnitude is 24.57 from the Hyper Su…
We present the first Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) catalog in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) observed between January 2017 and June 2020. HETDEX is an ongoing spectroscopic survey with no pre-selection based on magnitudes, colors or morphologies, enabling us to select AGN based on their spectral features. Both luminous quasars and low-luminosity Seyferts are found in our catalog. AGN candidates are selected with at least two significant AGN emission lines, such as the LyA and CIV line pair, or with single broad emission lines (FWHM > 1000 km/s). Each source is…
We present the LyA emission line luminosity function (LF) of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the first release of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) AGN catalog (Liu et al. 2022, Paper I). The AGN are selected either by emission-line pairs characteristic of AGN or by single broad emission line, free of any photometric pre-selections (magnitude/color/morphology). The sample consists of 2,346 AGN spanning 1.88<z<3.53, covering an effective area of 30.61 deg^2. Approximately 2.6 of the HETDEX AGN are not detected at $>5σ$ confidence at r~26 in the deepest $r$-ba…

We describe the survey design, calibration, commissioning, and emission-line detection algorithms for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). The goal of HETDEX is to measure the redshifts of over a million Ly$α$ emitting galaxies between 1.88<z<3.52, in a 540 deg^2 area encompassing a co-moving volume of 10.9 Gpc^3. No pre-selection of targets is involved; instead the HETDEX measurements are accomplished via a spectroscopic survey using a suite of wide-field integral field units distributed over the focal plane of the telescope. This survey measures the Hubble expansion pa…
We assemble an unbiased sample of 29 galaxies with [O II] $λ3727$ and/or [O III] $λ5007$ detections at $z < 0.15$ from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) Pilot Survey (HPS). HPS finds galaxies without pre-selection based on their detected emission lines via integral field spectroscopy. Sixteen of these objects were followed up with the second-generation, low resolution spectrograph (LRS2) on the upgraded Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Oxygen abundances were then derived via strong emission lines using a Bayesian approach. We find most of the galaxies fall along the mass-metall…
We assemble a sample of 17 low metallicity (7.45 < log(O/H)+12 < 8.12) galaxies with z < 0.1 found spectroscopically, without photometric pre-selection, in early data from the Hobby Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). Star forming galaxies that occupy the lowest mass and metallicity end of the mass-metallicity relation tend to be under sampled in continuum-based surveys as their spectra are typically dominated by emission from newly forming stars. We search for galaxies with high [OIII]$λ$5007 / [OII]$λ$3727, implying highly ionized nebular emission often indicative of low metall…
We present multi-frequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) follow-up observations of VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey sources identified as likely compact symmetric objects (CSOs) or super-massive binary black holes (SBBHs). We also present new spectroscopic redshifts for 11 sources observed with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. While no new SBBHs can be confirmed from these observations, we have identified 24 CSOs in the sample, 15 of which are newly designated, and refuted 52 candidates leaving 33 unconfirmed candidates. This is the first large uniform sample of CSOs which can be used to elici…
The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) is a large-volume spectroscopic survey without pre-selection of sources, searching ~ 540 deg^2 for Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at 1.9 < z < 3.5. Taking advantage of such a wide-volume survey, we perform a pilot study using early HETDEX data to search for lensed Lyman-alpha emitters. After performing a proof-of-concept using a previously known lensed LAE covered by HETDEX, we perform a search for previously unknown lensed LAEs in the HETDEX spectroscopic sample. We present a catalog of 26 potential LAEs lensed by foreground, re…
We measure the Ly$α$ escape fraction of 935 [OIII]-emitting galaxies between $1.9 < z < 2.35$ by comparing stacked spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3's near-IR grism to corresponding stacks from the Hobby Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment's Internal Data Release 2. By measuring the stacks' H$β$ to Ly$α$ ratios, we determine the Ly$α$ escape fraction as a function of stellar mass, star formation rate, internal reddening, size, and [OIII]/H$β$ ratio. We show that the escape fraction of Ly$α$ correlates with a number of parameters, such as galaxy size, star formation rate, and neb…
The Hobby-Eberly Dark Energy Experiment pilot survey identified 284 [O II] 3727 emitting galaxies in a 169 square-arcminute field of sky in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.57. This line flux limited sample provides a bridge between studies in the local universe and higher-redshift [O II] surveys. We present an analysis of the star formation rates (SFRs) of these galaxies as a function of stellar mass as determined via spectral energy distribution fitting. The [O II] emitters fall on the "main sequence" of star-forming galaxies with SFR decreasing at lower masses and redshifts. However, the slope …
As the second step in our investigation of the mass-to-light ratio of spiral disks, we present the results of a spectroscopic survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in five nearby, low-inclination galaxies: IC 342, M74 (NGC 628), M83 (NGC 5236), M94 (NGC 4736), and M101 (NGC 5457). Using 50 setups of the WIYN/Hydra and Blanco/Hydra spectrographs, and 25 observations with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope's Medium Resolution Spectrograph, we determine the radial velocities of 99, 102, 162, 127, and 48 PNe, respectively, to a precision better than 15 km/s. Although the main purpose of this data set is to fa…
Megamaser disks provide the most precise and accurate extragalactic supermassive black hole masses. Here we describe a search for megamasers in nearby galaxies using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We focus on galaxies where we believe that we can resolve the gravitational sphere of influence of the black hole and derive a stellar or gas dynamical measurement with optical or NIR observations. Since there are only a handful of super massive black holes (SMBH) that have direct black hole mass measurements from more than one method, even a single galaxy with a megamaser disk and a stellar dynamic…
We used data from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) to study the incidence of AGN in continuum-selected galaxies at $z\sim3$. From optical and infrared imaging in the 24 deg$^{2}$ Spitzer HETDEX Exploratory Large Area (SHELA) survey, we constructed a sample of photometric-redshift selected $z\sim3$ galaxies. We extracted HETDEX spectra at the position of 716 of these sources and used machine learning methods to identify those which exhibited AGN-like features. The dimensionality of the spectra was reduced using an autoencoder, and the latent space was visualized throug…
We are using five different surveys to compile the largest sample of diffuse interstellar band (DIB) measurements ever collected. GOSSS is obtaining intermediate-resolution blue-violet spectroscopy of ~2500 OB stars, of which 60% have already been observed and processed. The other four surveys have already collected multi-epoch high-resolution optical spectroscopy of 700 OB stars with different telescopes, including the 9 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope in McDonald Observatory. Some of our stars are highly-extinguished targets for which no good-quality optical spectra have ever been published. For al…
We present the results of a stellar-population analysis of Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAES) in GOODS-N at 1.9 < z < 3.5 spectroscopically identified by the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). We provide a method for connecting emission-line detections from the blind spectroscopic survey to imaging counterparts, a crucial tool needed as HETDEX builds a massive database of ~1 million Lyman-alpha detections. Using photometric data spanning as many as 11 filters covering 0.4-4.5 microns from the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes, we study the objects' global properties an…
Questions as to what drove the bulk reionization of the Universe, how that reionization proceeded, and how the hard ionizing radiation reached the intergalactic medium remain open and debated. Observations probing that epoch are severely hampered by the increasing amounts of neutral gas with increasing redshift, so a small, but growing number of experiments are targeting star forming galaxies ($z\sim3$) as proxies. However, these studies, while providing fantastic detail, are time intensive, contain relatively few targets, and can suffer from selection biases. As a complementary alternative, w…
In my previous reanalysis of the local star-forming galaxies observed in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) pilot survey, I reported that the overestimation of E(B - V), hence the star formation rate (SFR), undermined the claim of new galaxy population discovery in the original study. Herein, I re-examine whether the E(B - V) overestimation problem can be alleviated in the Bayesian parameter estimation framework by adopting scientifically motivated new priors. I modelled the emission-line fluxes of galaxies using the strong-line method and four model parameters-metallic…
We dissect giant Sc-Scd galaxies with Hubble Space Telescope photometry and Hobby-Eberly Telescope spectroscopy. We use HET's High Resolution Spectrograph (resolution = 15,000) to measure stellar velocity dispersions in the nuclear star clusters and pseudobulges of the pure-disk galaxies M33, M101, NGC 3338, NGC 3810, NGC 6503, and NGC 6946. We conclude: (1) Upper limits on the masses of any supermassive black holes are MBH <= (2.6+-0.5) * 10**6 M_Sun in M101 and MBH <= (2.0+-0.6) * 10**6 M_Sun in NGC 6503. (2) HST photometry shows that the above galaxies contain tiny pseudobulges that make up…
The steep spectrum radio source VLSSJ2217.5+5943 shows a complex, filamentary morphology and a curved spectrum. Therefore, the source has previously been classified as a radio phoenix. However, no galaxy cluster associated with this radio source has been confidently detected so far because the source is located in the direction of the innermost zone of the Galactic Plane at b = +2.4 degr (innermost Zone of Avoidance, ZoA). We analysed archival observations in the near infrared (UKIDSS) and mid infrared (Spitzer) to select the galaxies in the immediate neighbourhood of the radio source. A sampl…
I have reanalyzed the data obtained for local ($z<0.15$) star-forming galaxies during the pilot survey for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX)---called the HETDEX Pilot Survey (HPS)---which uses an integral-field-unit spectrograph and covers $\sim3500-5800$ $\unicode{x212B}$ at $\sim5$ $\unicode{x212B}$ resolution. I have newly determined the gas metallicities, $12 + \text{log(O/H)}$, following the Bayesian analysis scheme of the previous study, but dealing carefully with the uncertainty of strong-line calibration, performing reproducibility tests with mock data, and mon…
The Mitchell Spectrograph (a.k.a. VIRUS-P) on the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at McDonald Observatory is currently the largest field of view (FOV) integral field unit (IFU) spectrograph in the world (1.7'x1.7'). It was designed as a prototype for the highly replicable VIRUS spectrograph which consists of a mosaic of IFUs spread over a 16' diameter FOV feeding 150 spectrographs similar to the Mitchell. VIRUS will be deployed on the 9.2 meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) and will be used to conduct the HET Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). Since seeing first light in 2007 the Mitchell Spectrog…
We present a Bayesian approach to the redshift classification of emission-line galaxies when only a single emission line is detected spectroscopically. We consider the case of surveys for high-redshift Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxies (LAEs), which have traditionally been classified via an inferred rest-frame equivalent width (EW) greater than 20 angstrom. Our Bayesian method relies on known prior probabilities in measured emission-line luminosity functions and equivalent width distributions for the galaxy populations, and returns the probability that an object in question is an LAE given the cha…
