Jet vetoes are a prominent part of the signal selection in various analyses at the LHC. We discuss jet vetoes for which the transverse momentum of a jet is weighted by a smooth function of the jet rapidity. With a suitable choice of the rapidity-weighting function, such jet-veto variables can be factorized and resummed allowing for precise theory predictions. They thus provide a complementary way to divide phase space into exclusive jet bins. In particular, they provide a natural and theoretically clean way to implement a tight veto on central jets with the veto constraint getting looser for jets at increasingly forward rapidities. We mainly focus our discussion on the 0-jet case in color-singlet processes, using Higgs production through gluon fusion as a concrete example. For one of our jet-veto variables we compare the resummed theory prediction at NLL'+NLO with the recent differential cross section measurement by the ATLAS experiment in the $H\toγγ$ channel, finding good agreement. We also propose that these jet-veto variables can be measured and tested against theory predictions in other SM processes, such as Drell-Yan, diphoton, and weak diboson production.
Jet vetoes play an important role in many analyses at the LHC. Traditionally, jet vetoes have been imposed using a restriction on the transverse momentum $p_{Tj}$ of jets. Alternatively, one can also consider jet observables for which $p_{Tj}$ is weighted by a smooth function of the jet rapidity $y_j$ that vanishes as $|y_j| \to \infty$. Such observables are useful as they provide a natural way to impose a tight veto on central jets but a looser one at forward rapidities. We consider two such rapidity-dependent jet veto observables, $\mathcal{T}_{Bj}$ and $\mathcal{T}_{Cj}$, and compute the re…
The rapidity-dependent jet veto observables $\mathcal{T}_{Bj}$ and $\mathcal{T}_{Cj}$ provide a tight jet veto at central rapidity, gradually transitioning to a loose veto at forward rapidities. They divide the phase space into exclusive jet bins in a different way to the traditional jet veto observable $p_{Tj}$, and are advantageous to use under harsh pile-up conditions. We obtain predictions for the $0$-jet gluon-fusion (ggF) Higgs cross section using both of these veto observables at NNLL$'+$NNLO, and compare these predictions to the prior state-of-the-art of NLL$'+$NLO. A significant reduc…
We study Higgs boson production in exclusive jet bins at possible future 33 and 100 TeV proton-proton colliders. We compare the cross sections obtained using fixed-order perturbation theory with those obtained by also resuming large logarithms induced by the jet-binning in the gluon-fusion and associated production channels. The central values obtained by the best-available fixed-order predictions differ by $10-20\%$ from those obtained after including resummation over the majority of phase-space regions considered. Additionally, including the resummation dramatically reduces the residual scal…
We present new results for the jet-veto efficiency and zero-jet cross section in Higgs production through gluon fusion. We incorporate the N$^3$LO corrections to the total cross section, the NNLO corrections to the 1-jet rate, NNLL resummation for the jet $p_t$ and LL resummation for the jet radius dependence. Our results include known finite-mass corrections and are obtained using the jet-veto efficiency method, updated relative to earlier work to take into account what has been learnt from the new precision calculations that we include. For 13 TeV collisions and using our default choice for …
We discuss jet vetoes as a means of probing colour flow in hard-scattering processes in hadronic collisions. As an example, we describe a calculation of the dijet cross-section with a jet veto, which resums the leading logarithms of the veto scale and is matched to a fixed-order computation. We compare this prediction to the measurement performed by the ATLAS collaboration. Finally, we outline future developments in this research area.
We consider di-jet production in hadron collisions where a transverse veto is imposed on radiation for (pseudo-)rapidities in the central region only, where this central region is defined with rapidity cutoff. For the case where the transverse measurement (e.g., transverse energy or min $p_T$ for jet veto) is parametrically larger relative to the typical transverse momentum beyond the cutoff, the cross section is insensitive to the cutoff parameter and is factorized in terms of collinear and soft degrees of freedom. The virtuality for these degrees of freedom is set by the transverse measureme…
The properties of multi-jet events impact many LHC analysis. The exclusive number of jets at hadron colliders can be described in terms of two simple patterns: staircase scaling and Poisson scaling. In photon plus jets production we can interpolate between the two patterns using simple kinematic cuts. The associated theoretical errors are well under control. Understanding such exclusive jet multiplicities significantly impacts Higgs searches and searches for supersymmetry at the LHC.
We perform a detailed study of the exclusive Z+1-jet cross section at the 13 TeV LHC, motivated by the importance of similar exclusive cross sections in understanding the production of the Higgs boson in the W^+W^- final state. We point out a feature of the ATLAS analysis that has significant impact on the theoretical predictions: the jet-isolation criterion implemented by ATLAS effectively allows dijet events where an energetic jet is collinear to a final-state lepton. This process contains a giant $K$-factor arising from the collinear emission of a Z-boson from the dijet configuration. This …
Resummation of hadron collision cross sections, when the measurement imposes a hierarchy of scales, relies on factorization. Cancellation of Glauber / Coulomb gluons is a necessary condition for factorization. For Drell-Yan-like processes, the known proofs of cancellation of Glauber gluons are not applicable when jet vetoes are introduced, via jet algorithms or event shape variables such as the beam thrust. A priori, this does not rule out the possibility that an unknown new cancellation mechanism exists, or the possibility that a generalized factorization formalism is correct. To resolve the …
Jet vetoes are essential in many Higgs and new-physics analyses at the LHC and Tevatron. The signals are typically characterized by a specific number of hard jets, leptons, or photons, while the backgrounds often have additional jets. In such cases vetoing undesired additional jets is an effective way to discriminate signals and background. Given an inclusive event sample with N or more jets, the veto to have only N energetic jets defines an "exclusive" N-jet cross section. This strongly restricts the phase space of the underlying inclusive N-jet cross section and causes large double logarithm…
Central jet vetoes are powerful tools for reducing QCD background in measurements and searches for electroweak and colorless, new physics processes in hadron collisions. In this letter, we report the key findings of a new philosophy to designing searches for such phenomena at hadron colliders, one designed and centered around a dynamical jet veto instead a static veto applied independently of other selection criteria. Specifically, we investigate the theoretical and phenomenological consequences of setting the jet veto scale to the transverse momentum $(p_T)$ of the leading charged lepton $\el…
Far off-shell Higgs production in $H \rightarrow WW,ZZ$, is a particularly powerful probe of Higgs properties, allowing one to disentangle Higgs width and coupling information unavailable in on-shell rate measurements. These measurements require an understanding of the cross section in the far off-shell region in the presence of realistic experimental cuts. We analytically study the effect of a $p_T$ jet veto on far off-shell cross sections, including signal-background interference, by utilizing hard functions in the soft collinear effective theory that are differential in the decay products o…
We illustrate a study based on a veto technique to match parton showers and matrix elements in the Cascade Monte Carlo event generator, and present a numerical application to gluon matrix elements for jet production.
Jet vetoes play an important role at the LHC in the search for the Higgs and ultimately in precise measurements of its properties. Many Higgs analyses divide the cross section into exclusive jet bins to maximize the sensitivity in different production and decay channels. For a given jet category, the veto on additional jets introduces sensitivity to soft and collinear emissions, which causes logarithms in the perturbative expansion that need to be resummed to obtain precise predictions. We study the higher-order resummation properties of several conceptually distinct kinematic variables that c…
We investigate the resummation effects for the SM Higgs and vector boson associated production at the LHC with a jet veto in soft-collinear effective theory using "collinear anomalous" formalism. We calculate the jet vetoed invariant mass distribution and the cross section for this process at Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Logarithmic level, which are matched to the QCD Next-to-Leading Order results, and compare the differences of the resummation effects with different jet veto $p_{T}^{\rm veto}$ and jet radius $R$. Our results show that both resummation enhancement effects and the scale uncertaintie…
Heavy neutrinos $(N)$ remain one of most promising explanations for the origin of neutrinos' tiny masses and large mixing angles. In light of broad advances in understanding and modeling of hadron collisions at large momentum transfer, we revisit the long-standard search strategy for heavy $N$ decaying to multiple charged leptons $(\ell)$, $pp \to N\ell X \to 3\ell νX$. For electroweak and TeV-scale $N$, we propose a qualitatively new collider analysis premised on a dynamic jet veto and discriminating, on an event-by-event basis, according to the relative amount of hadronic and leptonic activi…
Multilepton searches for electroweakino and slepton pair production at hadron colliders remain some of the best means to test weak-scale supersymmetry. Searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, however, are limited by large diboson and top quark pair backgrounds, despite the application of traditional, central jet vetoes. In this context, we report the impact of introducing dynamic jet vetoes in searches for colorless superpartners. As a representative scenario, we consider the Drell-Yan production of a pair of right-handed smuons decaying into a dimuon system accompanied with missing transv…
The production of high-mass, color-singlet particles in hadron colliders is universally accompanied by initial state QCD radiation that is predominantly soft with respect to the hard process scale $Q$ and/or collinear with respect to the beam axis. At TeV-scale colliders, this is in contrast to top quark and multijet processes, which, by definition, are hard and central. Consequently, vetoing events with jets possessing transverse momenta above $p_T^{\rm Veto}$ in searches for new color-singlet states can efficiently reduce non-singlet backgrounds, thereby increasing experimental sensitivity. …
D0 has used W -> e nu events produced in association with a high $p_T$ jet to examine the effects of strong radiative corrections. We have compared the primary jet pseudorapidity distribution, as a function of reconstructed W rapidity to leading order (LO) and next to leading order (NLO) QCD Monte Carlos, as well as a model based on extended color dipoles. Our preliminary analysis finds that the primary jet is more central than either LO or NLO expectations and is in qualitative agreement with the color dipole model.
We present predictions of single inclusive jet transverse momentum, energy, and Feynman-$x$ spectra at forward rapidity ($5.2 < y < 6.6$) in proton-proton collisions with $\sqrt{s} = 7$ and 13 TeV. Calculations based on high-energy factorization and $k_T$-dependent parton densities are compared to simulations using the \pythia\ event generator. Effects from parton density evolution, parton shower dynamics, multi-parton interactions, and saturation of parton densities are investigated.
We study the impact of finite mass effects due to top and bottom loops in the jet-veto distribution for Higgs production. We discuss the appearance of non-factorizing logarithms in the region pt > m_b. We study their numerical impact and argue that these terms can be treated as a finite remainder. We therefore detail our prescription for resumming the jet-vetoed cross section and for assessing its uncertainty in the presence of finite mass effects. Resummation for the jet-veto, including mass effects, has been implemented in the public code JetVHeto.
We discuss an application of dynamical multi-parton interaction model, tuned to measurements of underlying event topology, for a description of destroying rapidity gaps in the jet-gap-jet processes at the LHC. We concentrate on the dynamical origin of the mechanism of destroying the rapidity gap. The cross section for jet-gap-jet is calculated within LL BFKL approximation. We discuss the topology of final states without and with the MPI effects. We discuss some examples of selected kinematical situations (fixed jet rapidities and transverse momenta) as distributions averaged over the dynamics …
We discuss how to search for a possibe signal of the recently observed 750 GeV enhancement in the diphoton channel in the four-jet production. In the present studies we assume that the produced state is pseudoscalar. This fact, when combined with specificity of the corresponding amplitude, allows to improve the signal-to-background (S/B) ratio. We discuss in detail how to impose cuts on jets in rapidity and transverse momenta in order to find optimal S/B ratio and not to loose too much statistics. Our study suggest a measurement of two soft (low cut on $p_t$) large-rapidity jets and two hard (…
Several searches for new physics at the LHC require a fixed number of signal jets, vetoing events with additional jets from QCD radiation. As the probed scale of new physics gets much larger than the jet-veto scale, such jet vetoes strongly impact the QCD perturbative series, causing nontrivial theoretical uncertainties. We consider slepton pair production with 0 signal jets, for which we perform the resummation of jet-veto logarithms and study its impact. Currently, the experimental exclusion limits take the jet-veto cut into account by extrapolating to the inclusive cross section using parto…
We discuss modification in the rapidity distribution of the transverse energy flow as a signal of medium-induced partonic energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. A scan of the global energy flow and jet rates in the wide rapidity region might provide the important information about the pseudo-rapidity size of a dense medium created in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.
We present an estimation of the contribution of double parton scattering (DPS) for jets widely separated in rapidity and for four-jet sample. In the case of four-jet production we calculate cross section for both single-parton scattering (SPS) using the code ALPGEN as well as for DPS in LO collinear approach. The DPS contribution is calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. We show that the relative (with respect to SPS dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jets) contribution of DPS is growing at large rapidity…
We study the production of jet events containing large rapidity gaps in particle colliders due to the resolved photon mechanism. In particular, we analize these events at DESY HERA and future $e^+e^-$ linear colliders, including the possibility of $γγ$ laser backscattering beams. These events allow the study of the perturbative pomeron in environments complementary to the hadron-hadron colliders, and also provide insight into the survival probability of the rapidity gaps involving photon initial state.
We have searched for high Pt (>40 GeV/c) jet events in ppbar collisions at the Fermilab TEVATRON (S**1/2 = 1800 GeV/c2) which have large pseudo-rapidity differences between the jets and are consistent with zero particle production from the underlying event. Preliminary analysis indicates that a significant fraction of these events with "voids" are present. (3 pages of plain text, 7 Figures available on request from the author)
We present the calculation of the forward jet vertex associated to a rapidity gap (coupling of a hard pomeron to the jet) in the BFKL formalism at next-to-leading order (NLO). Real emission contributions are computed via Lipatov's effective action. The NLO jet vertex turns out to be finite within collinear factorization and allows, together with the NLO non-forward gluon Green's function, to perform NLO studies of jet production in diffractive events (e.g. Mueller-Tang dijets).
We derive an all-order factorization theorem for the narrow jet broadening event shape, a measure of the transverse momentum in jet events. This is a non-global observable which receives logarithmically enhanced contributions associated with the large rapidity difference between soft and collinear radiation and which is also sensitive to soft recoil effects. Our work is the first factorization analysis of an observable of this type and we show that with regard to the non-global nature, the rapidity logarithms do not constitute an essential complication since they can be tied to the jet functio…
We analyze various perturbative mechanisms for the production of jet events containing rapidity gaps in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at LEP200 energies. We found that the processes $e^+e^- \to γ^* γ^*, γ^* Z, Z Z, WW \to 4~ jets$ generate gap events at an observable rate. We point out that LEP200 offers a unique opportunity for the study of gap events due to a smaller background of ``fake-gaps".
The production of jet pairs with small transverse momentum and large relative rapidity in high energy hadron-hadron collisions is studied. The rise of the parton-level cross section with increasing rapidity gap is a fundamental prediction of the BFKL `perturbative pomeron' equation of Quantum Chromodynamics. However, at fixed collider energy it is difficult to disentangle this effect from variations in the cross section due to the parton distributions. It is proposed to study instead the distribution in the azimuthal angle difference of the jets as a function of the rapidity gap. The flattenin…
We investigate the QCD resummation for the Higgs boson plus a high $P_T$ jet production with large rapidity separations in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The relevant Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) and Sudakov logs are identified and resummed. In particular, we apply recent developments of the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism in the impact factors, which provides a systematic framework to incorporate both the BFKL and Sudakov resummations.
A study of the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at 13 TeV LHC is presented, including BFKL resummation effects and investigating three different variants of the BLM scale optimization method. It is shown how the cross section and the azimuthal observables are affected by the exclusion of the events where, for a given rapidity interval between the two jets, one of these is produced in the central region.
We discuss production of four-jet final state $pp \rightarrow j j j j X$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC through the mechanism of double-parton scattering (DPS) in the context of jets with large rapidity separation. The DPS contributions are calculated within the so-called factorized Ansatz and each step of DPS is calculated in the LO collinear approximation. The LO pQCD calculations are shown to give a reasonably good descritption of recent CMS and ATLAS data on inclusive jet production and therefore this formalism can be used to reliably estimate the DPS effects. Relative contribution…
We present the results for the calculation of the forward jet vertex associated to a rapidity gap (coupling of a hard pomeron to the jet) in the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) formalism at next-to-leading order (NLO). We handle the real emission contributions making use of the high energy effective action proposed by Lipatov, valid for multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematics. This result is important since it allows, together with the NLO non-forward gluon Green function, to perform NLO studies of jet production in diffractive events (Mueller-Tang dijets, as a well-known example).
Jet vetoes are widely used in experimental analyses at the LHC to distinguish different hard-interaction processes. Experimental jet selections require a cut on the (pseudo)rapidity of reconstructed jets, $|η_{\rm jet}| \leq η_{\rm cut}$. We extend the standard jet-$p_T$ (jet-veto) resummation, which implicitly works in the limit $η_{\rm cut}\to\infty$, by incorporating a finite jet rapidity cut. We also consider the case of a step in the required $p_T^{\rm cut}$ at an intermediate value of $|η| \simeq 2.5$, which is of experimental relevance to avoid the increased pile-up contamination beyond…
A study of prompt photon plus associated jet production is performed at next-to-leading order (O($αα_s^2$)) in QCD at $\sqrt{S}=200-500$ GeV, appropriate for the RHIC polarized $\vec{p}\vec{p}$ collider experiment. Momentum correlations between the jet and photon are examined and the utility of the process as a method for constraining the size and shape of the polarized gluon density of the proton $ΔG$ is examined.
The suppression of high transverse momentum (P_T) jets and hadrons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to a p-p baseline in terms of the nuclear suppression factor R_AA is one of the key observables to gauge the density of a hot and dense QCD medium. However, the suppression measured by R_AA is not a straightforward measure of the medium properties, the value of the observable also depends on the ratio of quark to gluon jets and on the slope of the hard parton spectrum, which explains why R_AA is found to be fairly similar at RHIC and LHC despite the very different dynamics.…
We propose a model to describe diffractive events in hadron-hadron collisions where a rapidity gap is surrounded by two jets. The hard color-singlet object exchanged in the t-channel and responsible for the rapidity gap is described by the pQCD Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov Pomeron, including corrections due to next-to-leading logarithms. We allow the rapidity gap to be smaller than the inter-jet rapidity interval, and the corresponding soft radiation is modeled using the HERWIG Monte Carlo. Our model is able to reproduce all Tevatron data, and allows to estimate the jet-gap-jet cross section …
We present calculations of single inclusive jet transverse momentum and energy spectra at forward rapidity ($5.2\!<\!y\!<\!6.6$) in proton-lead collisions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The predictions are obtained with the KaTie Monte Carlo event generator, which allows to calculate interactions within the High Energy Factorisation framework. The tree-level matrix element results are subsequently interfaced with the CASCADE Monte Carlo event generator to account for hadronisation. The effects of the saturation of the gluon density, leading to suppression of the cross section, are investigat…
We discuss hadroproduction of 4-jet final state at the LHC within the double-parton scattering (DPS) mechanism in the context of large-rapidity-distance jets. For planned and/or being currently performed high energy experiments this is the kinematical region where searches for BFKL signal are of the main interest. The DPS contributions are calculated in the LO collinear approach within the so-called factorized Ansatz. We show that the relative contribution of DPS is growing with respect to standard single-parton scattering (SPS) production of dijets and to the BFKL Mueller-Navelet (MN) jet mec…
The particle production at very forward rapidities is expected to be sensitive to the non-linear effects in the QCD dynamics at high energies. In this paper we present, for the first time, the predictions of the Color Dipole formalism for the single inclusive jet photoproduction in $pp$ and $pPb$ collisions considering the very forward rapidities probed by the CMS-CASTOR calorimeter, which will be characterized by a jet in the rapidity range of $5.2 \le Y \le 6.6$, a rapidity gap in the rapidity range probed by the central CMS detector and one of the incident hadrons remaining intact in the fi…
We have implemented in the RAPGAP program a previously derived subtraction method for next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections in Monte-Carlo event generators, and we show results for jet production in deep inelastic scattering. At small x_{bj}, NLO corrections are comparable to the LO cross section, because of the large gluon density. We devise a jet observable that is particularly sensitive to the treatment of parton kinematics, which our method is intended to treat correctly. We compare the results of the calculation with LO calculations and with the previously existing treatment of NLO proc…
The jet shape modification due to partonic energy loss in the dense QCD matter is investigated by the help of the special transverse energy-energy correlator in the vicinity of maximum energy deposition of every event. In the accepted scenario with scattering of jet hard partons off comoving medium constituents this correlator is independent of the pseudorapidity position of a jet axis and becomes considerably broader (symmetrically over the pseudorapidity and the azimuthal angle) in comparison with $pp$-collisions. At scattering off "slow" medium constituents the broadening of correlation fun…
We discuss, in the framework of perturbative QCD at next to leading order, two related observables which are usually considered to provide tests of the BFKL dynamics : jet-jet correlations at Tevatron energies and forward particle-jet correlations at HERA. In the first case we study the rapidity gap dependence of the azimuthal correlations and find slightly too strong correlations at large gap. In the second case we discuss the cross section as well as the azimuthal correlations over a rapidity gap range of 5 units. We find that the requirement of a forward particle imposes strong kinematical …
Longitudinal dynamics of particle production and rapidity-dependent jet energy loss are investigated in small and asymmetric colliding systems. We utilize an improved version of \textsc{martini} in which two improvements are implemented to calculate the effect of the strongly coupled QGP droplet on jet energy loss. We show that those realistic prescriptions improve the results of nuclear modification factor calculations. We also observe visible energy loss of jets in a thermal background of high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions, and a clear correlation between the energy loss and elliptic flow coe…
Multi-jet production at the LHC is an important process to study. In particular, events with final state kinematic configurations where we have two jets widely separated in rapidity with similar pT and lots of mini-jets or jets populating the space in between are relevant for the high energy limit of QCD. Keeping the jet multiplicity fixed, the study of these events is a good ground to test different models of multi-particle production in hadron-hadron collisions. We report on a comparison between the predictions of the old multiperipheral Chew-Pignotti model and those of BFKL for the single j…
A two-component model (TCM) for single-particle $p_t$ spectra describes 200 GeV p-p data accurately. Based on that TCM a spectrum hard component was isolated that is related quantitatively to pQCD predictions for jet fragmentation down to low jet energies ($\approx 3$ GeV). We here address jet-related structure in 2D trigger-associated (TA) correlations as a more-detailed method to explore the kinematic limits of low-energy jet production and low-momentum jet fragment structure in p-p collisions. We derive a TCM for p-p TA correlations that can be used to isolate 2D jet-related structure. Infe…
This thesis is concerned with the theory and the phenomenology of rapidity gap processes. We perform perturbative calculations of energy flow observables in jet-gap-jet processes, which consist of resummed primary emission calculations specific to the soft gluon geometry at HERA and an estimate of non-global (secondary emission) effects in clustered energy flow observables. The resulting predictions agree well with H1 data. We also study hard diffraction and use a factorised model, with a Monte Carlo event generator, to make detailed predictions for gap-jet-gap events at the Tevatron. We find …
Effects from a finite top quark mass on the H+n-jet cross section through gluon fusion are studied for $n=0/n\ge 1$ at NNLO/NLO QCD. For this purpose, sub-leading terms in $1/m_t$ are calculated. We show that the asymptotic expansion of the jet-vetoed cross section at NNLO is very well behaved and that the heavy-top approximation is valid at the five permille level up to jet-veto cuts of 300 GeV. For the inclusive Higgs+jet rate, we introduce a matching procedure that allows for a reliable prediction of the top-mass effects using the expansion in $1/m_t$. The quality of the effective field the…
We present the calculation of the two-loop soft function for the transverse momentum distribution of the leading jet produced in association with any colour-singlet system (e.g.~a Higgs or a $Z$ boson). This constitutes a central ingredient for the resummation of the above distribution as well as the jet-vetoed cross section at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, both of which play an important role in the precision physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider. The calculation is performed in soft-collinear effective theory with an appropriate regularisation of the rapidit…
The inclusive production of several jets is studied in the framework of the hard pomeron model. The average jet momenta are found to be strongly ordered and growing towards the central c.m. rapidity, as expected. Strong positive correlations are found for pairs of jets neighbouring in rapidity, both in the forward-backward and forward-forward directions.
