In the present paper, we consider a Cauchy problem for a linear second order in time abstract differential equation with pure delay. In the absence of delay, this problem, known as the harmonic oscillator, has a two-dimensional eigenspace so that the solution of the homogeneous problem can be written as a linear combination of these two eigenfunctions. As opposed to that, in the presence even of a small delay, the spectrum is infinite and a finite sum representation is not possible. Using a special function referred to as the delay exponential function, we give an explicit solution representation for the Cauchy problem associated with the linear oscillator with pure delay. In contrast to earlier works, no positivity conditions are imposed.
The problem of two van der Pol oscillators coupled by velocity delay terms was studied by Wirkus and Rand in 2002. The small-epsilon analysis resulted in a slow flow which contained delay terms. To simplify the analysis, Wirkus and Rand followed a common procedure of replacing the delay terms by non-delayed terms, a step said to be valid for small epsilon, resulting in a slow flow which was an ODE rather than a DDE (delay-differential equation). In the present paper we consider the same problem but leave the delay terms in the slow flow, thereby offering an evaluation of the approximate simpli…
We consider a general model for a network of oscillators with time delayed, circulant coupling. We use the theory of weakly coupled oscillators to reduce the system of delay differential equations to a phase model where the time delay enters as a phase shift. We use the phase model to study the existence and stability of cluster solutions. Cluster solutions are phase locked solutions where the oscillators separate into groups. Oscillators within a group are synchronized while those in different groups are phase-locked. We give model independent existence and stability results for symmetric clu…
We discuss the asymptotic frequency synchronization for the non-identical Kuramoto oscillators with time delayed interactions. We provide explicit lower bound on the coupling strength and upper bound on time delay in terms of initial configurations ensuring exponential synchronization. This generalizes not only the frequency synchronization estimate by Choi et al. [Physica D, 241, (2012), 735-754] for the non-identical Kuramoto oscillators without time delays but also improves previous result by Schmidt et al. [Automatica, 48, (2012), 3008-3017] in the case of homogeneous time delays where the…

The effects of a distributed 'weak generic kernel' delay on cyclically coupled limit cycle and chaotic oscillators are considered. For coupled Van der Pol oscillators (and in fact, other oscillators as well) the delay can produce transitions from amplitude death(AD) or oscillation death (OD) to Hopf bifurcation-induced periodic behavior, with the delayed limit cycle shrinking or growing as the delay is varied towards or away from the bifurcation point respectively. The transition from AD to OD is mediated here via a pitchfork bifurcation, as seen earlier for other couplings as well. Also, the …
We introduce a discrete delayed exponential depending on sequence of matrices. This discrete matrix gives a representation of a solution to the Cauchy problem for a discrete linear system with pure delay with sequence of matrices. We discard the commutativity condition used in recent works related to the representation of solutions for discrete delay linear systems.
We consider a network of identical pulse-coupled oscillators with delay and all-to-all coupling. We demonstrate that the discontinuous nature of the dynamics induces the appearance of isochronous regions---subsets of the phase space filled with periodic orbits having the same period. For fixed values of the network parameters each such isochronous region corresponds to a subset of initial states on an appropriate surface of section with non-zero dimension such that all periodic orbits in this set have qualitatively similar dynamical behaviour. We analytically and numerically study in detail su…
We present an approach to generate chimera dynamics (localized frequency synchrony) in oscillator networks with two populations of (at least) two elements using a general method based on delayed interactions with linear and quadratic terms. The coupling design yields robust chimeras through a phase-model-based design of the delay and the ratio of linear and quadratic components of the interactions. We demonstrate the method in the Brusselator model and experiments with electrochemical oscillators. The technique opens the way to directly bridge chimera dynamics in phase models and real-world os…
Time lags occur in a vast range of real-world dynamical systems due to finite reaction times or propagation speeds. Here we derive an analytical approach to determine the asymptotic stability of synchronous states in networks of coupled inertial oscillators with constant delay. Building on the master stability formalism, our technique provides necessary and sufficient delay master stability conditions. We apply it to two classes of potential future power grids, where processing delays in control dynamics will likely pose a challenge as renewable energies proliferate. Distinguishing between pha…
Interaction via pulses is common in many natural systems, especially neuronal. In this article we study one of the simplest possible systems with pulse interaction: a phase oscillator with delayed pulsatile feedback. When the oscillator reaches a specific state, it emits a pulse, which returns after propagating through a delay line. The impact of an incoming pulse is described by the oscillator's phase reset curve (PRC). In such a system we discover an unexpected phenomenon: for a sufficiently steep slope of the PRC, a periodic regular spiking solution bifurcates with several multipliers cross…
This paper presents a master stability function (MSF) approach for analyzing the stability of amplitude death (AD) in networks of delay-coupled oscillators. Unlike the familiar MSFs for instantaneously coupled networks, which typically have a single input encoding for the effects of the eigenvalues of the network Laplacian matrix, for delay-coupled networks we show that such MSFs generally require two additional inputs: the time delay and the coupling strength. To utilize the MSF for predicting the stability of AD of arbitrary networks for a chosen nonlinear system (node dynamics) and coupling…
Hysteresis phenomena and multistability play crucial roles in the dynamics of coupled oscillators, which are now interpreted from the point of view of codimension-two bifurcations. On the Ott-Antonsen's manifold, complete bifurcation sets of delay-coupled Kuramoto model are derived regarding coupling strength and delay as bifurcation parameters. It is rigorously proved that the system must undergo Bautin bifurcations for some critical values, thus there always exists saddle-node bifurcation of periodic solutions inducing hysteresis loop. With the aid of center manifold reduction method and the…
