We present the spectral signatures of the Bethe-Heitler pair production ($pe$) process on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars, in scenarios where the hard $γ$-ray emission is of photohadronic origin. If relativistic protons interact with the synchrotron blazar photons producing $γ$ rays through photopion processes, we show that, besides the $2-20$ PeV neutrino emission, the typical blazar SED should have an emission feature due to the synchrotron emission of $pe$ secondaries that bridges the gap betweeen the low-and high-energy humps of the SED, namely in the energy range 40 keV-40 MeV. We first present analytical expressions for the photopion and $pe$ loss rates in terms of observable quantities of blazar emission. For the $pe$ loss rate in particular, we derive a new approximate analytical expression for the case of a power-law photon distribution, which has an excellent accuracy with the numerically calculated exact one, especially at energies above the threshold for pair production. We show that for typical blazar parameters, the photopair synchrotron emission emerges in the hard X-ray/soft $γ$-ray energy range with a characteristic spectral shape and non negligible flux, which may be even comparable to the hard $γ$-ray flux produced through photopion processes. We argue that the expected "$pe$ bumps" are a natural consequence of leptohadronic models, and as such, they may indicate that blazars with a three-hump SED are possible emitters of high-energy neutrinos.
The Bethe-Heitler formula describes bremsstrahlung and it's a typical and important example in quantum electromagnetic dynamics (QED). This formula is widely applied in many branches of physics and astrophysics. We find that the integrated bremsstrahlung cross section at the static approximation and high energy limit has an unexpected big increment, which is missed by previous bremsstrahlung theory. This anomalous effect also exists in electron-positron pair creation. We derive the relating formulas and point out that electromagnetic cascades at the top of atmosphere can test this effect.
We study the effect of Bethe-Heitler (BeHe) pair production on a proton synchrotron model for the prompt emission in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The possible parameter space of the model is constrained by consideration of the synchrotron radiation from the secondary BeHe pairs. We find two regimes of interest. 1) At high bulk Lorentz factor, large radius and low luminosity, proton synchrotron emission dominates and produces a spectrum in agreement with observations. For part of this parameter space, a subdominant (in the MeV band) power-law is created by the synchrotron emission of the BeHe pairs…

Context. Very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray measurements of distant TeV blazars can be nicely explained by TeV spectra induced by ultra high-energy cosmic rays. Aims. We develop a model for a plausible origin of hard spectra in distant TeV blazars. Methods. In the model, the TeV emission in distant TeV blazars is dominated by two mixed components. The first is the internal component with the photon energy around 1 TeV produced by inverse Compton scattering of the relativistic electrons on the synchrotron photons (SSC) with a correction for extragalactic background light absorbtion and the other is…
This paper examines the possibility that hadronic processes produce the >100 MeV photons in the prompt phase of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Fermi-LAT. We calculate analytically the radiation from protons and from secondary electron-positron pairs produced by high energy protons interacting with gamma-rays inside of the GRB jet. We consider both photo-pion and Bethe-Heitler pair production processes to create secondary electrons and positrons that then radiate via inverse Compton and synchrotron processes. We also consider synchrotron radiation from the protons themselves. We calcul…
Strong X-ray emission from large scale jets of radio loud quasars still remains an open problem. Models based on inverse Compton scattering off CMB photons by relativistically beamed jets have recently been ruled out, since Fermi LAT observations for 3C 273 and PKS 0637-752 give the upper limit far below the model prediction. Synchrotron emission from a separate electron population with multi-hundred TeV energies remains a possibility although its origin is not well known. We examine a photo-hadronic origin of such high energy electrons/positrons, assuming that protons are accelerated up to $1…
We reveal that the energy spectra of electrons-positrons in primary cosmic rays measured at atmosphere top have double structures: an excess component $Φ^s_{e^+}(E)=Φ^s_{e^-}(E)$ around $400 GeV$, which origins from a strong $e^+e^-$-source and the distorted background $Φ^0_{e^-}(E)$. We supposed that the difference between AMS-CALET and Fermi-LAT-DAMPE data origins from the energy loss of the fluxes due to the anomalous bremsstrahlung effect at a special window. The evolution of spectra under anomalous bremsstrahlung effect satisfies an improved electromagnetic cascade equation. The above spe…
We discuss the prospects of detecting the sources of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic ray (CR) nuclei via their emission of cosmogenic gamma-rays in the GeV to TeV energy range. These gamma-rays result from electromagnetic cascades initiated by high energy photons, electrons and positrons that are emitted by CRs during their propagation in the cosmic radiation background and are independent of the simultaneous emission of gamma-rays in the vicinity of the source. The corresponding production power by UHE CR nuclei (with mass number A and charge Z) is dominated by pion photo-production (~ A) and …
The radiation mechanism of Radio-Loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (RL-NLS1) from X-ray to $γ$-ray bands remains an open question. While the leptonic model has been employed to explain the spectral energy distribution (SED), the hadronic process may potentially account for the high energy radiation of some $γ$-ray loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) as well. We study one of such RL-NLS1, PKS 1502+036, comparing the theoretical SEDs predicted by the leptonic model and the lepto-hadronic model to the observed one. For the hadronic processes, we take into account the proton synchrotron radiation and proto…
The high-energy (> 100MeV) emission observed by Fermi-LAT during the prompt phase of some luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) could arise from the cascade induced by interactions between accelerated protons and the radiation field of GRBs. The photomeson process, which is usually suggested to operate in such a hadronic explanation, requires a rather high proton energy (> 10^17eV) for an efficient interaction. However, whether GRBs can accelerate protons to such a high energy is far from guaranteed, although they have been suggested as the candidate source for ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. In this…
Blazars - active galaxies with the jet pointing at Earth - emit across all electromagnetic wavelengths. The so-called one-zone model has described well both quiescent and flaring states, however it cannot explain the radio emission. In order to self-consistently describe the entire electromagnetic spectrum, extended jet models are necessary. Notably, kinetic descriptions of extended jets can provide the temporal and spatial evolution of the particle species and the full electromagnetic output. Here, we present the initial results of a recently developed hadronic extended-jet code. As protons t…
Cosmogenic neutrinos originate from photo-hadronic interactions of cosmic ray protons with the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The neutrino production rate can be constrained through the accompanying electrons, positrons and gamma-rays that quickly cascade on the CMB and intergalactic magnetic fields to lower energies and generate a gamma ray background in the GeV-TeV region. Bethe-Heitler pair production by protons also contributes to the cascade and can tighten the neutrino constraints in models where extragalactic cosmic rays begin to dominate over the galactic component at a relatively …
Mysteries about the origin of high-energy cosmic neutrinos have deepened by the recent IceCube measurement of a large diffuse flux in the 10-100 TeV range. Based on the standard disk-corona picture of active galactic nuclei (AGN), we present a phenomenological model enabling us to systematically calculate the spectral sequence of multimessenger emission from the AGN coronae. We show that protons in the coronal plasma can be stochastically accelerated up to PeV energies by plasma turbulence, and find that the model explains the large diffuse flux of medium-energy neutrinos if the cosmic rays ca…
It has been suggested that some classes of luminous supernovae (SNe) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are driven by newborn magnetars. Fast-rotating proto-neutron stars have also been of interest as potential sources of gravitational waves (GWs). We show that for a range of rotation periods and magnetic fields, hard X rays and GeV gamma rays provide us with a promising probe of pulsar-aided SNe. It is observationally known that young pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) in the Milky Way are very efficient lepton accelerators. We argue that, if embryonic PWNe satisfy similar conditions at early stages of SNe …
The blazar TXS 0506+056 got into the spotlight of the astrophysical community in September 2017, when a high-energy neutrino detected by IceCube (IceCube-170922A) was associated at the 3 $σ$ level to a $γ$-ray flare from this source. This multi-messenger photon-neutrino association remains, as per today, the most significant one ever observed. TXS 0506+056 was a poorly studied object before the IceCube-170922A event. To better characterize its broad-band emission, we organized a multi-wavelength campaign lasting 16 months (November 2017 to February 2019), covering the radio-band (Metsähovi, OV…
