The aim of this paper is to propose a new numerical approximation of the Kalman-Bucy filter for semi-Markov jump linear systems. This approximation is based on the selection of typical trajectories of the driving semi-Markov chain of the process by using an optimal quantization technique. The main advantage of this approach is that it makes pre-computations possible. We derive a Lipschitz property for the solution of the Riccati equation and a general result on the convergence of perturbed solutions of semi-Markov switching Riccati equations when the perturbation comes from the driving semi-Markov chain. Based on these results, we prove the convergence of our approximation scheme in a general infinite countable state space framework and derive an error bound in terms of the quantization error and time discretization step. We employ the proposed filter in a magnetic levitation example with markovian failures and compare its performance with both the Kalman-Bucy filter and the Markovian linear minimum mean squares estimator.
A generalized Kalman-Bucy model under model uncertainty and a corresponding robust problem are studied in this paper. We find that this robust problem is equivalent to an estimate problem under a sublinear operator. By Girsanov transformation and the minimax theorem, we prove that this problem can be reformulated as a classical Kalman-Bucy filtering problem under a new probability measure. The equation which governs the optimal estimator is obtained. Moreover, the optimal estimator can be decomposed into the classical optimal estimator and a term related to model uncertainty.
The Kalman-Bucy filter is the optimal state estimator for an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck diffusion given that the system is partially observed via a linear diffusion-type (noisy) sensor. Under Gaussian assumptions, it provides a finite-dimensional exact implementation of the optimal Bayes filter. It is generally the only such finite-dimensional exact instance of the Bayes filter for continuous state-space models. Consequently, this filter has been studied extensively in the literature since the seminal 1961 paper of Kalman and Bucy. The purpose of this work is to review, re-prove and refine existing re…
In this paper, we study a generalized Kalman-Bucy filtering problem under uncertainty. The drift uncertainty for both signal process and observation process is considered and the attitude to uncertainty is characterized by a convex operator (convex risk measure). The optimal filter or the minimum mean square estimator (MMSE) is calculated by solving the minimum mean square estimation problem under a convex operator. In the first part of this paper, this estimation problem is studied under g-expectation which is a special convex operator. For this case, we prove that there exists a worst-case p…
It is known that Kalman-Bucy filter is stable with respect to initial conditions under the conditions of uniform complete controllability and uniform complete observability (Bishop et. al 2017, Ocone et. al 1996). In this paper, we prove the stability of Kalman-Bucy filter for the case of noise free dynamical system. The earlier stability results cannot be applied for this case, as the system is not controllable at all. We further show that the optimal linear filter for certain class of non-Gaussian initial conditions is asymptotically proximal to Kalman-Bucy filter. It is also shown that the …
Duality between estimation and optimal control is a problem of rich historical significance. The first duality principle appears in the seminal paper of Kalman-Bucy, where the problem of minimum variance estimation is shown to be dual to a linear quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem. Duality offers a constructive proof technique to derive the Kalman filter equation from the optimal control solution. This paper generalizes the classical duality result of Kalman-Bucy to the nonlinear filter: The state evolves as a continuous-time Markov process and the observation is a nonlinear function of st…
This paper revisits the question of duality between minimum variance estimation and optimal control first described for the linear Gaussian case in the celebrated paper of Kalman and Bucy. A duality result is established for nonlinear filtering, mirroring closely the original Kalman-Bucy duality of control and estimation for linear systems. The result for the finite state-space continuous time Markov chain is presented. It's solution is used to derive the classical Wonham filter.
In this article, we complement recent results on the convergence of the state estimate obtained by applying the discrete-time Kalman filter on a time-sampled continuous-time system. As the temporal discretization is refined, the estimate converges to the continuous-time estimate given by the Kalman--Bucy filter. We shall give bounds for the convergence rates for the variance of the discrepancy between these two estimates. The contribution of this article is to generalize the convergence results to systems with unbounded observation operators under different sets of assumptions, including syste…
The classical state-space approach to optimal estimation of stochastic processes is efficient when the driving noises are generated by martingales. In particular, the weight function of the optimal linear filter, which solves a complicated operator equation in general, simplifies to the Riccati ordinary differential equation in the martingale case. This reduction lies in the foundations of the Kalman-Bucy approach to linear optimal filtering. In this paper we consider a basic Kalman-Bucy model with noises, generated by independent fractional Brownian motions, and develop a new method of asympt…
This paper describes an optimization framework to design guidance for a possibly heterogeneous team of multiple mobile sensors to estimate a spatiotemporal process modeled by a 2D diffusion-advection process. Owing to the abstract linear system representation of the process, we apply the Kalman-Bucy filter for estimation, where the sensors provide linear outputs. We propose an optimization problem that minimizes the sum of the trace of the covariance operator of the Kalman-Bucy filter and a generic mobility cost of the mobile sensors, subject to the sensors' motion modeled by linear dynamics. …
We consider the situation in which a continuous-time vector Gauss-Markov process is observed through a vector Gaussian channel (sensor) and estimated by the Kalman-Bucy filter. Unlike in standard filtering problems where a sensor model is given a priori, we are concerned with the optimal sensor design by which (i) the mutual information between the source random process and the reproduction (estimation) process is minimized, and (ii) the minimum mean-square estimation error meets a given distortion constraint. We show that such a sensor design problem is tractable by semidefinite programming. …
New linear minimum mean square estimators are introduced in this paper by considering a cluster information structure in the filter design. The set of filters constructed in this way can be ordered in a lattice according to the refines of clusters of the Markov chain, including the linear Markovian estimator at one end (with only one cluster) and the Kalman filter at the other hand (with as many clusters as Markov states). The higher is the number of clusters, the heavier are pre-compuations and smaller is the estimation error, so that the cluster cardinality allows for a trade-off between per…
This paper develops a deep learning method for linear and nonlinear filtering. The idea is to start with a nominal dynamic model and generate Monte Carlo sample paths. Then these samples are used to train a deep neutral network. A least square error is used as a loss function for network training. Then the resulting weights are applied to Monte Carlo sampl\ es from an actual dynamic model. The deep filter obtained in such a way compares favorably to the traditional Kalman filter in linear cases and the extended Kalman filter in nonlinear cases. Moreover, a switching model with jumps is studied…
We show how a linear control systems theory for the backward nabla differential operator on an arbitrary time scale can be obtained via Caputo's duality. More precisely, we consider linear control systems with outputs defined with respect to the backward jump operator. Kalman criteria of controllability and observability, as well as realizability conditions, are proved.
A stochastic filter uses a series of measurements over time to produce estimates of unknown variables based on a dynamic model. For a quantum system, such an algorithm is provided by a quantum filter, which is also known as a stochastic master equation (SME). For a linear quantum system subject to linear measurements and Gaussian noise, the quantum filter reduces to a quantum Kalman filter. In this article, we introduce a quantum extended Kalman filter (quantum EKF), which applies a commutative approximation and a time-varying linearization to non-commutative quantum stochastic differential eq…
Kalman smoothers reconstruct the state of a dynamical system starting from noisy output samples. While the classical estimator relies on quadratic penalization of process deviations and measurement errors, extensions that exploit Piecewise Linear Quadratic (PLQ) penalties have been recently proposed in the literature. These new formulations include smoothers robust with respect to outliers in the data, and smoothers that keep better track of fast system dynamics, e.g. jumps in the state values. In addition to L2, well known examples of PLQ penalties include the L1, Huber and Vapnik losses. In …
This paper is about a deep learning approach for linear and nonlinear filtering. The idea is to train a neural network with Monte Carlo samples generated from a nominal dynamic model. Then the network weights are applied to Monte Carlo samples from an actual dynamic model. A main focus of this paper is on the deep filters with three major neural network architectures (DNN, CNN, RNN). Our deep filter compares favorably to the traditional Kalman filter in linear cases and outperform the extended Kalman filter in nonlinear cases. Then a switching model with jumps is studied to show the adaptivene…
