The impact of electromagnetic stabilization and flow shear stabilization on ITG turbulence is investigated. Analysis of a low-$β$ JET L-mode discharge illustrates the relation between ITG stabilization, and proximity to the electromagnetic instability threshold. This threshold is reduced by suprathermal pressure gradients, highlighting the effectiveness of fast ions in ITG stabilization. Extensive linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations are then carried out for the high-$β$ JET hybrid discharge 75225, at two separate locations at inner and outer radii. It is found that at the inner radius, nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization is dominant, and is critical for achieving simulated heat fluxes in agreement with the experiment. The enhancement of this effect by suprathermal pressure also remains significant. It is also found that flow shear stabilization is not effective at the inner radii. However, at outer radii the situation is reversed. Electromagnetic stabilization is negligible while the flow shear stabilization is significant. These results constitute the high-$β$ generalization of comparable observations found at low-$β$ at JET. This is encouraging for the extrapolation of electromagnetic ITG stabilization to future devices. An estimation of the impact of this effect on the ITER hybrid scenario leads to a 20% fusion power improvement.
We report on a theoretical discovery of new regimes of Alfvén eigenmode (AE) induced fast ion transport in tokamak plasmas, where microturbulence plays the role of a mediator of fast ion relaxation. Coulomb collisional scattering alone leads to small AE amplitudes and does not reproduce the steady state regimes observed in experiments. We show that in nonlinear regimes the effective pitch angle scattering due to microturbulence can lead to steady state AE amplitude evolution. This indicates a new route for fast ion losses, which is beyond the scenarios described in "Energetic ion transport by …
Nonlinear electromagnetic stabilization by suprathermal pressure gradients found in specific regimes is shown to be a key factor in reducing tokamak microturbulence, augmenting significantly the thermal pressure electromagnetic stabilization. Based on nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations investigating a set of ion heat transport experiments on the JET tokamak, described by Mantica et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 135004 (2011)], this result explains the experimentally observed ion heat flux and stiffness reduction. These findings are expected to improve the extrapolation of advanced tokamak scenarios…

The observation that fast ions stabilize ion-temperature-gradient-driven microturbulence has profound implications for future fusion reactors. It is also important in optimizing the performance of present-day devices. In this work, we examine in detail the phenomenology of fast ion stabilization and present a reduced model which describes this effect. This model is derived from the high-energy limit of the gyrokinetic equation and extends the existing "dilution" model to account for nontrivial fast ion kinetics. Our model provides a physically-transparent explanation for the observed stabiliza…
In full flux-surface computer studies of tokamak edge turbulence, a spectrum of shear flows is found to control the turbulence level and not just the conventional (0,0)-mode flows. Flux tube domains too small for the large poloidal scale lengths of the continuous spectrum tend to overestimate the flows, and thus underestimate the transport. It is shown analytically and numerically that under certain conditions dominant (0,0)-mode flows independent of the domain size develop, essentially through Bose-Einstein condensation of the shear flows.
In this paper we propose a vertical stabilization~(VS) control system for tokamak plasmas based on the extremum seeking (ES) algorithm. The gist of the proposed strategy is to inject an oscillating term in the control action and exploit a modified ES algorithm in order to bring to zero the average motion of the plasma along the unstable mode. In this way, the stabilization of the unstable vertical dynamic of the plasma is achieved. The approach is validated by means of both linear and nonlinear simulations of the overall~ITER tokamak magnetic control system, with the aim of demonstrating robus…
In this paper, we develop the kinetic and hydrodynamic theories of the convective mesoscale flows driven by the spatially inhomogeneous electrostatic ion cyclotron parametric microturbulence in the pedestal plasma with a sheared poloidal flow. The developed kinetic theory predicts the generation of the sheared poloidal convective flow, and of the radial compressed flow with radial flow velocity gradient. The developed hydrodynamic theory of the convective flows reveals the radial compressed convective flow as the dominant factor in the formation of the steep pedestal density profile with densi…
In this work we demostrate using a two-temperature volume average 0D model that robust stabilization, with regard the hellium ash confinement time, of the burn conditions of a tokamak reactor with the ITER FEAT design parameters can be achieved using Radial Basis Neural Networks (RBNN). Alpha particle thermalization time delay is taken into account in this model. The control actions implemented by means of a RBNN, include the modulation of the DT refueling rate, a neutral He-4 injection beam and auxiliary heating powers to ions and to electrons; all of them constrained to lie within allowable …

We have used the local-$δ{f}$ gyrokinetic code GS2 to perform studies of the effect of flux-surface shaping on two highly-shaped, low- and high-$β$ JT-60SA-relevant equilibria, including a successful benchmark with the GKV code. We find a novel destabilization of electrostatic fluctuations with increased elongation for plasma with a strongly peaked pressure profile. We explain the results as a competition between the local magnetic shear and finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) stabilization. Electromagnetic studies indicate that kinetic ballooning modes are stabilized by increased shaping due to an inc…
Non-modal kinetic theory of the stability of the compressed-sheared plasma flows generated by the inhomogeneous microscale turbulence in the tokamak edge plasma
This paper deals with the new spectral and microturbulence experimental data and their analysis, which show, that the radial electric field Er generated at the LH heating (LHH) in the FT-2 is high enough to form the transport barriers. The ETB is formed when LHH is switched off. The radial fluctuation-induced EB drift flux densities near LCFS in SOL are measured at two different poloidal angles. For this purpose two Langmuir probes located at low and high field sides of the torus are used. Registration of the poloidal and radial components of the electric field and density fluctuations…
Despite high demonstrated efficiency, lower-hybrid current drive (LHCD) has not been considered localized enough for neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) stabilization in tokamaks. This assessment must be reconsidered in view of the RF current condensation effect. We show that an island with a central hot spot induces significant localization of LHCD. Furthermore, in steady state tokamaks where a significant amount of current is provided by LHCD, passive stabilization of NTMs may occur automatically, particularly as islands become large, without requiring precise aiming of the wave power.
High-power-density tokamaks offer a potential solution to design cost-effective fusion devices. One way to achieve high power density is to operate at a high $β$ value (the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure), i.e., $β\sim 1$. However, a $β\sim 1$ state may be unstable to various pressure- and current-driven instabilities or have unfavorable microstability properties. To explore these possibilities, we generate $β\sim 1$ equilibria and investigate their stability. Initially, we study an analytical technique that was used in the past to generate $β\sim 1$ equilibria and outline its limitatio…
Toroidal flow alone is generally thought to have important influence on tokamak edge pedestal stability, even though theory analysis often predicts merely a weak stabilizing effect of toroidal flow on the edge localized modes (ELMs) in experimental parameter regimes. For the first time, we find from two-fluid MHD calculations that such a stabilization, however, can be significantly enhanced by increasing the edge plasma density. Our finding resolves a long-standing mystery whether or how toroidal rotation can indeed have effective influence on ELMs, and explains why the ELM mitigation and supp…

We have extended our study of the competition between the drive and stabilization of plasma microinstabilities by sheared flow to include electromagnetic effects at low plasma $β$ (the ratio of plasma to magnetic pressure). The extended system of characteristic equations is formulated, for a dissipative fluid model developed from the gyrokinetic equation, using a twisting mode representation in sheared slab geometry and focusing on the ion temperature gradient mode. Perpendicular flow shear convects perturbations along the field at the speed we denote as $Mc_s$ (where $c_s$ is the sound speed)…
The competition between the drive and stabilization of plasma microinstabilities by sheared flow is investigated, focusing on the ion temperature gradient mode. Using a twisting mode representation in sheared slab geometry, the characteristic equations have been formulated for a dissipative fluid model, developed rigorously from the gyrokinetic equation. They clearly show that perpendicular flow shear convects perturbations along the field at a speed we denote by $Mc_s$ (where $c_s$ is the sound speed), whilst parallel flow shear enters as an instability driving term analogous to the usual tem…
