We present magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the atmospheres of hot Jupiters ranging in temperature from 1100-1800K. Magnetic effects are negligible in atmospheres with temperatures $\lesssim$ 1400K. At higher temperatures winds are variable and in many cases, mean equatorial flows can become westward, opposite to their hydrodynamic counterparts. Ohmic dissipation peaks at temperatures $\sim$1500-1600K, depending on field strength, with maximum values $\sim 10^{18}$W at 10bar, substantially lower than previous estimates. Based on the limited parameter study done, this value can not be increased substantially with increasing winds, higher temperatures, higher field strengths, different boundary conditions or lower diffusivities. Although not resolved in these simulations there is modest evidence that a magnetic buoyancy instability may proceed in hot atmospheres.
Jupiter's atmosphere is enriched with heavy elements by a factor of about 3 compared to proto-solar. The origin of this enrichment and whether it represent the bulk composition of the planetary envelope remain unknown. Internal structure models of Jupiter suggest that its envelope is separated from the deep interior and that the planet is not fully mixed. This implies that Jupiter's atmosphere was enriched with heavy elements just before the end of its formation. Such enrichment can be a result of late planetesimal accretion. However, in-situ Jupiter formation models suggest the decreasing acc…
In the Jovian atmosphere, the trace species are detected for the first time after the collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 near 44$^\circ$S in July 1994. Most of these trace species are detected with spectroscopic millimeter/submillimeter observation. In the atmosphere of Jupiter, trace gases play an important role in atmospheric chemistry with heterogeneous and homogeneous chemical reactions, interaction with radiation, and phase transition. Here we present the first spectroscopic detection of the rotational emission line of water (H$_{2}$O) in the atmosphere of Jupiter at frequency $ν$ = 183.…
Hot Jupiters were the first exoplanets to be discovered around main sequence stars and astonished us with their close-in orbits. They are a prime example of how exoplanets have challenged our textbook, solar-system inspired story of how planetary systems form and evolve. More than twenty years after the discovery of the first hot Jupiter, there is no consensus on their predominant origin channel. Three classes of hot Jupiter creation hypotheses have been proposed: in situ formation, disk migration, and high eccentricity tidal migration. Although no origin channel alone satisfactorily explains …
The UVS instrument on the Juno mission recorded transient bright emission from a point source in Jupiter's atmosphere. The spectrum shows that the emission is consistent with a 9600-K blackbody located 225 km above the 1-bar level and the duration of the emission was between 17 ms and 150 s. These characteristics are consistent with a bolide in Jupiter's atmosphere. Based on the energy emitted, we estimate that the impactor had a mass of 250-5000 kg, which corresponds to a diameter of 1-4 m. By considering all observations made with Juno UVS over the first 27 perijoves of the mission, we estim…
We present the results of a uniform search for additional planets around all stars with confirmed hot Jupiters observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in its Cycle 1 survey of the southern ecliptic hemisphere. Our search comprises 184 total planetary systems with confirmed hot Jupiters with $R_{p}$ > 8$R_\oplus$ and orbital period < 10 days. The Transit Least Squares (TLS) algorithm was utilized to search for periodic signals that may have been missed by other planet search pipelines. While we recovered 169 of these confirmed hot Jupiters, our search yielded no new statist…
11 transient bright flashes were detected in Jupiter's atmosphere using the UVS instrument on the Juno spacecraft. These bright flashes are only observed in a single spin of the spacecraft and their brightness decays exponentially with time, with a duration of ~1.4 ms. The spectra are dominated by H2 Lyman band emission and based on the level of atmospheric absorption, we estimate a source altitude of 260 km above the 1-bar level. Based on these characteristics, we suggest that these are observations of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) in Jupiter's upper atmosphere. In particular, we suggest t…
We present estimates for the occurrence rates of hot Jupiters around dwarf stars based on data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) Prime Mission. We take 97 hot Jupiters orbiting 198,721 AFG dwarf stars (ranging in mass from $0.8M_{\odot}$ to $2.3M_{\odot}$) from an independent search for hot Jupiters using TESS Prime Mission data. We estimate our planet sample's false positive rates as $14\pm7\%$ for A stars, $16\pm6\%$ for F stars, and $0\%$ for G stars. We find hot Jupiter occurrence rates of $0.29 \pm 0.05\%$ for A stars, $0.36 \pm 0.06\%$ for F stars and $0.55 \pm 0.14\%…
Recent progress in high-dispersion spectroscopy has revealed the presence of vaporized heavy metals and ions in the atmosphere of hot Jupiters whose dayside temperature is larger than 2000 K, categorized as ultra hot Jupiters (UHJs). Using the archival data of high resolution transmission spectroscopy obtained with the Subaru telescope, we searched for neutral metals in HD149026b, a hot Jupiter cooler than UHJs. By removing stellar and telluric absorption and using a cross-correlation technique, we report tentative detection of neutral titanium with 4.4 sigma and a marginal signal of neutral i…
Most hot Jupiter exoplanets do not have a nearby planetary companion in their planetary system. One remarkable exception is the system of WASP-47 with an inner and outer nearby companion to a hot Jupiter, providing detailed constrains on its formation history. In this work, we follow-up on a tentative photometric signal of a transiting inner companion to the hot Jupiter HATS-50b. If confirmed, it would be the third case of a hot Jupiter with an inner companion. 63 hours of new ground-based photometry were employed to rule out this signal to about 96% confidence. The injection of artificial tra…
We investigate under which conditions supermassive hot Jupiters can sustain source regions for radio emission, and whether this emission could propagate to an observer outside the system. We study Tau Bootis b-like planets (a supermassive hot Jupiter with 5.84 Jupiter masses and 1.06 Jupiter radii), but located at different orbital distances (between its actual orbit of 0.046 AU and 0.2 AU). Due to the strong gravity of such planets and efficient radiative cooling, the upper atmosphere is (almost) hydrostatic and the exobase remains very close to the planet, which makes it a good candidate for…
In giant planet atmosphere modelling, the intrinsic temperature $T_\mathrm{int}$ and radiative-convective boundary (RCB) are important lower boundary conditions. Often in one-dimensional radiative-convective models and in three-dimensional general circulation models it is assumed that $T_\mathrm{int}$ is similar to that of Jupiter itself, around 100 K, which yields a RCB around 1 kbar for hot Jupiters. In this work, we show that the inflated radii, and hence high specific entropy interiors, of hot Jupiters suggest much higher $T_\mathrm{int}$ values. Assuming the effect is primarily due to cur…
Multiple-Planet Scattering and the Origin of Hot Jupiters
The outer population of hot Jupiters formed in systems where at least one planet was ejected. This population survived the effects of tides over >。
Hydrocarbon species, and in particular CH$_4$, play a key role in the stratosphere--thermosphere boundary of Jupiter, which occurs around the $μ$-bar pressure level. Previous analyses of solar occultation, He and Ly-$α$ airglow, and ISO/SWS measurements of the radiance around 3.3 $μ$m have inferred significantly different methane concentrations. Here we aim to accurately model the CH$_4$ radiance at 3.3 $μ$m measured by ISO/SWS by using a comprehensive non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model and the most recent collisional rates measured in the laboratory for CH$_4$ to shed new light onto th…
Small but mighty: High-resolution spectroscopy of ultra-hot Jupiter atmospheres with compact telescopes. KELT-9 b's transmission spectrum with Wendelstein's FOCES Spectrograph
The first discovered extrasolar worlds -- giant, ``hot Jupiter'' planets on short-period orbits -- came as a surprise to solar-system-centric models of planet formation, prompting the development of new theories for planetary system evolution. The near-absence of observed nearby planetary companions to hot Jupiters has been widely quoted as evidence in support of high-eccentricity tidal migration: a framework in which hot Jupiters form further out in their natal protoplanetary disks before being thrown inward with extremely high eccentricities, stripping systems of any close-in planetary compa…

We show that the orbits of exoplanets of the "hot Jupiter" type, as a rule, are located close to the Alfven point of the stellar wind of the parent star. At this, many hot Jupiters can be located in the sub-Alfven zone in which the magnetic pressure of the stellar wind exceeds its dynamic pressure. Therefore, magnetic field of the wind must play an extremely important role for the flow of the stellar wind around the atmospheres of the hot Jupiters. This factor must be considered both in theoretical models and in the interpretation of observational data. The analysis shows that many typical hot…
Here we draw attention to a candidate system with one hot Jupiter and one small, nearby companion, revealed by the recent Kepler data release (DR25). The hot Jupiter, Kepler-730b, has radius $R_{\rm p}=11.36^{+1.14}_{-0.98}~R_\oplus$ and orbital period $P=6.492$ d, and the newly discovered companion, KOI-929.02, has $R_{\rm p}=1.45^{+0.15}_{-0.20}~R_\oplus$ and $P=2.852$ d. No transit timing variation (TTV) was detected because of the marginal detection of the small companion transit, but this small companion passed all the validation tests. This system is probably another planetary system wit…
The obliquity of a star, or the angle between its spin axis and the average orbit normal of its companion planets, provides a unique constraint on that system's evolutionary history. Unlike the Solar System, where the Sun's equator is nearly aligned with its companion planets, many hot Jupiter systems have been discovered with large spin-orbit misalignments, hosting planets on polar or retrograde orbits. We demonstrate that, in contrast to stars harboring hot Jupiters on circular orbits, those with eccentric companions follow no population-wide obliquity trend with stellar temperature. This fi…
Ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) have recently been the focus of several atmospheric studies due to their extreme properties. While molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) plays a key role in UHJ atmospheres, it has not been directly detected on an exoplanet. To determine the feasibility of H$_2$ detection via transmission spectroscopy of the Lyman and Werner bands, we modeled UHJ atmospheres with H$_2$ rotational temperatures varying from 2000 K to 4000 K orbiting A-type stars ranging from $T_{eff}$ = 8,500 K to $T_{eff}$ = 10,300 K. We present simulated transmission spectra for each planet-star temperature comb…
Recent observations of ultra-hot Jupiters with dayside temperatures in excess of $2500~\mathrm{K}$ have found evidence for new physical processes at play in their atmospheres. In this work, we investigate the effects of the dissociation of molecular hydrogen and recombination of atomic hydrogen on the atmospheric circulation of ultra-hot Jupiters. To do so, we incorporate these effects into a general circulation model (GCM) for hot Jupiter atmospheres, and run a large suite of models varying the incident stellar flux, rotation period, and strength of frictional drag. We find that including hyd…
Atmospheric compositions offer valuable clues to planetary formation and evolution. Jupiter has been the most well-studied giant planet in terms of its atmosphere; however, the origin of the Jovian atmospheric composition remains a puzzle as the abundances of nitrogen and noble gases as high as those of other elements could only originate from extremely cold environments. We propose a novel idea for explaining the Jovian atmospheric composition: Dust pileup at the H$_2$O snow line casts a shadow and cools the Jupiter orbit so that N$_2$ and noble gases can freeze. Planetesimals or a core forme…
The atmosphere of a hot jupiter may be subject to a thermo-resistive instability, in which the increasing electrical conductivity with temperature leads to runaway Ohmic heating. We introduce a simplified model of the local dynamics in the equatorial region of a hot jupiter that incorporates the back reaction on the atmospheric flow as the increasing electrical conductivity leads to flux freezing, which in turn quenches the flow and therefore the Ohmic heating. We demonstrate a new time-dependent solution that emerges for a temperature-dependent electrical conductivity (whereas a temperature-i…
We present results from a set of simulations using a fully coupled three-dimensional (3D) chemistry-radiation-hydrodynamics model and investigate the effect of transport of chemical species by the large-scale atmospheric flow in hot Jupiter atmospheres. We couple a flexible chemical kinetics scheme to the Met Office Unified Model which enables the study of the interaction of chemistry, radiative transfer and fluid dynamics. We use a newly-released "reduced" chemical network comprising 30 chemical species that has been specifically developed for application in 3D atmosphere models. We simulate …
We discover a population of short-period, Neptune-size planets sharing key similarities with hot Jupiters: both populations are preferentially hosted by metal-rich stars, and both are preferentially found in Kepler systems with single transiting planets. We use accurate LAMOST DR4 stellar parameters for main-sequence stars to study the distributions of short-period 1d < P < 10d Kepler planets as a function of host star metallicity. The radius distribution of planets around metal-rich stars is more "puffed up" as compared to that around metal-poor hosts. In two period-radius regimes, planets pr…

The emergent spectra of close-in, giant exoplanets ("hot Jupiters") are expected to be distinct from those of self-luminous objects with similar effective temperatures because hot Jupiters are primarily heated from above by their host stars rather than internally from the release of energy from their formation. Theoretical models predict a continuum of dayside spectra for hot Jupiters as a function of irradiation level, with the coolest planets having absorption features in their spectra, intermediate-temperature planets having emission features due to thermal inversions, and the hottest plane…
