Binary neutron stars in circular orbits can be modeled as helically symmetric, i.e., stationary in a rotating frame. This symmetry gives rise to a first integral of the Euler equation, often employed for constructing equilibrium solutions via iteration. For eccentric orbits, however, the lack of helical symmetry has prevented the use of this method, and the numerical relativity community has often resorted to constructing initial data by superimposing boosted spherical stars without solving the Euler equation. The spuriously excited neutron star oscillations seen in evolutions of such data arise because such configurations lack the appropriate tidal deformations and are stationary in a linearly comoving---rather than rotating---frame. We consider eccentric configurations at apoapsis that are instantaneously stationary in a rotating frame. We extend the notion of helical symmetry to eccentric orbits, by approximating the elliptical orbit of each companion as instantaneously circular, using the ellipse's inscribed circle. The two inscribed helical symmetry vectors give rise to approximate instantaneous first integrals of the Euler equation throughout each companion. We use these integrals as the basis of a self-consistent iteration of the Einstein constraints to construct conformal thin-sandwich initial data for eccentric binaries. We find that the spurious stellar oscillations are reduced by at least an order of magnitude, compared with those found in evolutions of superposed initial data. The tidally induced oscillations, however, are physical and qualitatively similar to earlier evolutions. Finally, we show how to incorporate radial velocity due to radiation reaction in our inscribed helical symmetry vectors, which would allow one to obtain truly non-eccentric initial data when our eccentricity parameter $e$ is set to zero.
We develop a method to compute low-eccentricity initial data of binary neutron stars required to perform realistic simulations in numerical relativity. The orbital eccentricity is controlled by adjusting the orbital angular velocity of a binary and incorporating an approaching relative velocity of the neutron stars. These modifications improve the solution primarily through the hydrostatic equilibrium equation for the binary initial data. The orbital angular velocity and approaching velocity of initial data are updated iteratively by performing time evolutions over ~3 orbits. We find that the …
We develop a method to compute low-eccentricity initial data of black hole--neutron star binaries in the puncture framework extending previous work on other types of compact binaries. In addition to adjusting the orbital angular velocity of the binary, the approaching velocity of a neutron star is incorporated by modifying the helical Killing vector used to derive equations of the hydrostationary equilibrium. The approaching velocity of the black hole is then induced by requiring the vanishing of the total linear momentum of the system, differently from the case of binary black holes in the pu…
We study the impact of eccentricity on gravitational-wave parameter estimation for binary neutron star systems. For signals with small eccentricity injected into the advanced LIGO sensitivity, we perform Bayesian parameter estimation using the circular waveform model and show how the recovered parameters can be biased from their true values, focusing on the intrinsic parameters the chirp mass ($M_c$), the symmetric mass ratio ($η$), and the tidal deformability ($\tildeλ$). By comparing the results between the Bayesian and the analytic Fisher-Cutler-Vallisneri (FCV) methods, we obtain the valid…
Information about the last stages of a binary neutron star inspiral and the final merger can be extracted from quasi-equilibrium configurations and dynamical evolutions. In this article, we construct quasi-equilibrium configurations for different spins, eccentricities, mass ratios, compactnesses, and equations of state. For this purpose we employ the SGRID code, which allows us to construct such data in previously inaccessible regions of the parameter space. In particular, we consider spinning neutron stars in isolation and in binary systems; we incorporate new methods to produce highly eccent…
Binary neutron stars (BNSs) are the primary source of gravitational waves for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and its international partners Virgo and KAGRA. Current BNS searches target field binaries whose orbits will have circularized by radiation reaction before their gravitational waves enter the Advanced LIGO sensitive band at 15 Hz. It has been suggested that a population of BNSs may form by n-body interactions near supermassive black holes or in globular clusters and that these systems may have non-negligible eccentricity in the Advanced LIGO band. We show…

We study the effect of tidal interaction between two compact bodies in an eccentric orbit. We assume the tidal fields to be static. Therefore, we ignore the dynamic tides and resonant excitations. Using the results, we find the analytical expression for the phase shift of the emitted gravitational wave. In the process, we find that in the leading order, the initial eccentricity $e_0$ and the dimensionless tidal deformability $Λ$ couple as $\sim e_0^nΛ$, where $n$ is a positive number. We only focus on the dominant contribution, i.e., $e_0^2Λ$. We also compute the accumulated dephasing for bina…

Lorentz symmetry is an important concept in modern physics. Precision pulsar timing was used to put tight constraints on the coefficients for Lorentz violation in the pure-gravity sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME). We extend the analysis to Lorentz-violating matter-gravity couplings, utilizing three small-eccentricity relativistic neutron star (NS) -- white dwarf (WD) binaries. We obtain compelling limits on various SME coefficients related to the neutron, the proton, and the electron. These results are complementary to limits obtained from lunar laser ranging and clock experiments.
Two binary neutron star mergers, GW170817 and GW190425, have been detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo. These signals were detected by matched-filter searches that assume the star's orbit has circularized by the time their gravitational-wave emission is observable. This suggests that their eccentricity is low, but full parameter estimation of their eccentricity has not yet been performed. We use gravitational-wave observations to measure the eccentricity of GW170817 and GW190425. We find that the eccentricity at a gravitational-wave frequency of 10 Hz is $e \leq 0.024$ and $e \leq 0.048$ for GW…

We study the dynamical signatures of black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) binary mergers via Lidov-Kozai oscillations induced by tertiary companions in hierarchical triple systems. For each type of binaries (BH-BH and BH-NS), we explore a wide range of binary/triple parameters that lead to binary mergers, and determine the distributions of eccentricity ($e_\mathrm{m}$) and spin-orbit misalignment angle ($θ_\rm {sl}^\rm f$) when the binary enters the LIGO/VIRGO band. We use the double-averaged (over both orbits) and single-averaged (over the inner orbit) secular equations, as well as N-body in…
We determine the ability of Cosmic Explorer, a proposed third-generation gravitational-wave observatory, to detect eccentric binary neutron stars and to measure their eccentricity. We find that for a matched-filter search, template banks constructed using binaries in quasi-circular orbits are effectual for eccentric neutron star binaries with $e_{7} \leq 0.004$ ($e_{7} \leq 0.003$) for CE1 (CE2), where $e_7$ is the binary's eccentricity at a gravitational-wave frequency of 7~Hz. We show that stochastic template placement can be used to construct a matched-filter search for binaries with larger…
In this work, we report the discovery and characterization of PSR J1411+2551, a new binary pulsar discovered in the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift Pulsar Survey. Our timing observations of the radio pulsar in the system span a period of about 2.5 years. This timing campaign allowed a precise measurement of its spin period (62.4 ms) and its derivative (9.6 $\pm$ 0.7) $\times 10^{-20}\, \rm s\, s^{-1}$; from these, we derive a characteristic age of $\sim 10\,$Gyr and a surface magnetic field strength of 2.5 $\times 10^{9}$ G. These numbers indicate that this pulsar was mildly recycled by accretion of mat…
We study the orbital evolution of eccentric binary neutron stars. The orbit is described as a Quasi-Keplarian orbit with perturbations due to tidal couplings. We find that the tidal interaction between stars contributes to orbital precession, in addition to the Post-Newtonian procession. The coupling between the angular and radial motion of the binary also excites a series of harmonics in the stars' oscillation. In the small eccentricity limit, this coupling mainly gives rise to an additional orbital resonance, with the orbital frequency being one third of the f-mode frequency. For a binary wi…
The coalescence of two neutron stars is an important gravitational wave source for LIGO and other detectors. Numerous studies have considered the precision with which binary parameters (masses, spins, Love numbers) can be measured. Here I consider the accuracy with which these parameters can be determined in the presence of systematic errors due to waveform approximations. These approximations include truncation of the post-Newtonian (PN) series and neglect of neutron star (NS) spin, tidal deformation, or orbital eccentricity. All of these effects can yield systematic errors that exceed statis…

Gravitational-wave observations provide a unique opportunity to test general relativity (GR) in the strong-field and highly dynamical regime of the theory. Parametrized tests of GR are one well-known approach for quantifying violations of GR. This approach constrains deviations in the coefficients of the post-Newtonian phasing formula, which describes the gravitational-wave phase evolution of a compact binary as it inspirals. Current bounds from this test using LIGO/Virgo observations assume that binaries are circularized by the time they enter the detector frequency band. Here, we investigate…
We report here the Einstein@Home discovery of PSR J1913+1102, a 27.3-ms pulsar found in data from the ongoing Arecibo PALFA pulsar survey. The pulsar is in a 4.95-hr double neutron star (DNS) system with an eccentricity of 0.089. From radio timing with the Arecibo 305-m telescope, we measure the rate of advance of periastron to be 5.632(18) deg/yr. Assuming general relativity accurately models the orbital motion, this corresponds to a total system mass of 2.875(14) solar masses, similar to the mass of the most massive DNS known to date, B1913+16, but with a much smaller eccentricity. The small…
We present a new iterative method to reduce eccentricity in black-hole-binary simulations. Given a good first estimate of low-eccentricity starting momenta, we evolve puncture initial data for ~4 orbits and construct improved initial parameters by comparing the inspiral with post-Newtonian calculations. Our method is the first to be applied directly to the gravitational-wave (GW) signal, rather than the orbital motion. The GW signal is in general less contaminated by gauge effects, which, in moving-puncture simulations, limit orbital-motion-based measurements of the eccentricity to an uncertai…
The LIGO/Virgo collaborations recently announced the detection of a likely binary neutron star merger, GW190425. The total mass of GW190425 is significantly larger than the masses of Galactic double neutron stars known through radio astronomy. This suggests that GW190425 formed differently from Galactic double neutron stars. We hypothesize that GW190425 formed via unstable "case BB" mass transfer. According to this hypothesis, the progenitor of GW190425 was a binary consisting of a neutron star and a ${\sim} 4-5 {M_\odot}$ helium star, which underwent a common-envelope process. Following the s…

We estimate the properties of the double neutron star (DNS) population that will be observable by the planned space-based interferometer LISA. By following the gravitational radiation driven evolution of DNSs generated from rapid population synthesis of massive binary stars, we estimate that around 35 DNSs will accumulate a signal-to-noise ratio above 8 over a four-year LISA mission. The observed population mainly comprises Galactic DNSs (94 per cent), but detections in the LMC (5 per cent) and SMC (1 per cent) may also be expected. The median orbital frequency of detected DNSs is expected to …

We use a post-Newtonian diagnostic tool to examine numerically generated quasiequilibrium initial data sets for non-spinning double neutron star and neutron star-black hole binary systems. The PN equations include the effects of tidal interactions, parametrized by the compactness of the neutron stars and by suitable values of ``apsidal'' constants, which measure the degree of distortion of stars subjected to tidal forces. We find that the post-Newtonian diagnostic agrees well with the double neutron star initial data, typically to better than half a percent except where tidal distortions are b…
We propose a novel method to examine whether Galactic double neutron star binaries are formed in the LISA band. In our method, we assign an effective time fraction $τ$ to each double neutron star binary detected by LISA. This fraction is given as a function of the observed orbital period and eccentricity and should be uniformly distributed in the absence of in-band binary formation. Applying statistical techniques such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to the actual list of $τ$, we can inspect the signature of the in-band binary formation. We discuss the prospects of this method, paying close att…
In this chapter we review the recent results on the equilibrium configurations of static and uniformly rotating neutron stars within the Hartle formalism. We start from the Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations formulated and extended by Belvedere et al. (2012, 2014). We demonstrate how to conduct numerical integration of these equations for different central densities ${\it ρ}_c$ and angular velocities $Ω$ and compute the static $M^{stat}$ and rotating $M^{rot}$ masses, polar $R_p$ and equatorial $R_{\rm eq}$ radii, eccentricity $ε$, moment of inertia $I$, angular momentum $J$, as well as t…
General relativistic quasiequilibrium states of black hole-neutron star binaries are computed in the moving-puncture framework. We propose three conditions for determining the quasiequilibrium states and compare the numerical results with those obtained in the excision framework. We find that the results obtained in the moving-puncture framework agree with those in the excision framework and with those in the third post-Newtonian approximation for the cases that (i) the mass ratio of the binary is close to unity irrespective of the orbital separation, and (ii) the orbital separation is large e…
We present a code to construct initial data for binary neutron star systems in which the stars are rotating. Our code, based on a formalism developed by Tichy, allows for arbitrary rotation axes of the neutron stars and is able to achieve rotation rates near rotational breakup. We compute the neutron star angular momentum through quasi-local angular momentum integrals. When constructing irrotational binary neutron stars, we find a very small residual dimensionless spin of $\sim 2\times 10^{-4}$. Evolutions of rotating neutron star binaries show that the magnitude of the stars' angular momentum…
We study the secular dynamics of compact binaries (consisting of white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes) with tertiary companions in hierarchical triple systems. As the inner binary (with initially negligible eccentricity) undergoes orbital decay due to gravitational radiation, its eccentricity can be excited by gravitational forcing from the tertiary. This excitation occurs when the triple system passes through an "apsidal precession resonance", when the precession rate of the inner binary, driven by the gravitational perturbation of the external companion and general relativity, matches …
Eccentricity of compact binaries can improve the parameter estimation of gravitational waves (GWs). In this paper, we first investigate the parameter estimation of eccentric GWs with decihertz observatory. We consider two scenarios for the configuration of DECIGO, i.e., the one cluster of DECIGO with its design sensitivity and B-DECIGO which also has one cluster but with inferior sensitivity as a comparison. We adopt the Fisher matrix to estimate the parameter errors. By mocking up the typical binaries in GWTC-3, we find a nonvanishing eccentricity can significantly improve the estimation for …
We present results from three-dimensional general relativistic simulations of binary neutron star coalescences and mergers using public codes. We considered equal mass models where the baryon mass of the two Neutron Stars (NS) is $1.4M_{\odot}$, described by four different equations of state (EOS) for the cold nuclear matter (APR4, SLy, H4, and MS1; all parametrized as piecewise polytropes). We started the simulations from four different initial interbinary distances ($40, 44.3, 50$, and $60$ km), including up to the last 16 orbits before merger. That allows to show the effects on the gravitat…

We have tested the appropriateness of two-soliton analytic metric to describe the exterior of all types of neutron stars, no matter what their equation of state or rotation rate is. The particular analytic solution of the vaccuum Einstein equations proved quite adjustable to mimic the metric functions of all numerically constructed neutron-star models that we used as a testbed. The neutron-star models covered a wide range of stiffness, with regard to the equation of state of their interior, and all rotation rates up to the maximum possible rotation rate allowed for each such star. Apart of the…
The Kozai mechanism for a hierarchical triple system could reduce the merger time of inner eccentric binary emitting gravitational waves (GWs), and has been qualitatively explained with the secular theory that is derived by averaging short-term orbital revolutions. However, with the secular theory, the minimum value of the inner pericenter distance could be excessively limited by the averaging operation. Compared with traditional predictions, the actual evolution of an eccentric inner binary could be accompanied by (i) a higher characteristic frequency of the pulse-like GWs around its pericent…
Maximum gravitational wave emission from binary stars in eccentric orbits occurs near the periastron passage. We show that for a stationary distribution of binary neutron stars in the Galaxy, several high-eccentricity systems with orbital periods in the range from tens of minutes to several days should exist that emit broad gravitational-wave pulses in the frequency range 1-100 mHz. The space interferometer LISA could register the pulsed signal from these system at a signal-to-noise ratio level $S/N>5\sqrt{5}$ in the frequency range $\sim 10^{-3}-10^{-1}$ Hz during one-year observational time.…
Neutron stars are ideal to probe, not only nuclear physics, but also strong-field gravity. Approximate universal relations insensitive to the star's internal structure exist among certain observables and are useful in testing General Relativity, as they project out the uncertainties in the equation of state. One such set of universal relations between the moment of inertia $(I)$, the tidal Love number and the quadrupole moment $(Q)$ has been studied both in General Relativity and in modified theories. In this paper, we study the relations in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, a well-motivated, pa…
We construct closed-form gravitational waveforms (GWs) with tidal effects for the coalescence and merger of binary neutron stars. The method relies on a new set of eccentricity-reduced and high-resolution numerical relativity (NR) simulations and is composed of three steps. First, tidal contributions to the GW phase are extracted from the time-domain NR data. Second, those contributions are employed to fix high-order coefficients in an effective and resummed post-Newtonian expression. Third, frequency-domain tidal approximants are built using the stationary phase approximation. Our tidal appro…
Within the next few years gravitational waves (GWs) from merging black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs) may be directly detected, making a thorough theoretical understanding of these systems a high priority. As an additional motivation, these systems may represent a subset of short-duration gamma-ray burst (sGRB) progenitors. BH-NS mergers are expected to result from primordial, quasi-circular inspiral as well as dynamically formed capture binaries. The latter channel allows mergers with high eccentricity, resulting in a richer variety of outcomes. We perform general relativistic simulation…
Dynamically formed compact object binaries may still be eccentric while in the LIGO/Virgo band. For a neutron star (NS) in an eccentric binary, the fundamental modes (f-modes) are excited at pericenter, transferring energy from the orbit to oscillations in the NS. We model this system by coupling the evolution of the NS f-modes to the orbital evolution of the binary as it circularizes and moves toward coalescence. NS f-mode excitation generally speeds up the orbital decay and advances the phase of the gravitational wave signal from the system. We calculate how this effect changes the timing of…
We present the Computational Relativity CoRe collaboration's public database of gravitational waveforms from binary neutron star mergers. The database currently contains 367 waveforms from numerical simulations that are consistent with general relativity and that employ constraint satisfying initial data in hydrodynamical equilibrium. It spans 164 physically distinct configuration with different binary parameters (total binary mass, mass-ratio, initial separation, eccentricity, and stars' spins) and simulated physics. Waveforms computed at multiple grid resolutions and extraction radii are pro…
Black hole (BH) mergers driven by gravitational perturbations of external companions constitute an important class of formation channels for merging BH binaries detected by LIGO. We have studied the orbital and spin evolution of binary BHs in triple systems, where the tertiary companion excites large eccentricity in the inner binary through Lidov-Kozai oscillations, causing the binary to merge via gravitational radiation. Using the single-orbital-averaged and double-orbital-averaged secular dynamics equations of triples, we determine the merger window (the range of companion inclinations that …
